NEW JERUSALEMNOVA VULGATA
1 A prayer of the prophet Habakkuk; tone as for dirges.1 Oratio Habacuc prophetae.
Secundum melodiam lamentationum.
2 Yahweh, I have heard of your renown; your work, Yahweh, inspires me with dread. Make it live again inour time, make it known in our time; in wrath remember mercy.2 Domine, audivi auditionem tuam
et timui, Domine, opus tuum.
In medio annorum vivifica illud,
in medio annorum notum facies.
Cum iratus fueris, misericordiae recordaberis.
3 Eloah comes from Teman, and the Holy One from Mount Paran. Pause His majesty covers theheavens, and his glory fills the earth.3 Deus a Theman veniet,
et Sanctus de monte Pharan. — Selah.
Operit caelos gloria eius,
et laudis eius plena est terra.
4 His brightness is like the day, rays flash from his hands, that is where his power lies hidden.4 Splendor eius ut lux erit,
radii ex manibus eius:
ibi abscondita est fortitudo eius.
5 Pestilence goes before him and Plague follows close behind.5 Ante faciem eius ibit mors,
et egredietur pestis post pedes eius.
6 When he stands up, he makes the earth tremble, with his glance he makes the nations quake. And theeternal mountains are dislodged, the everlasting hil s sink down, his pathway from of old.6 Stetit et concussit terram,
aspexit et dissolvit gentes.
Et contriti sunt montes saeculi,
incurvati sunt colles antiqui
ab itineribus aeternitatis eius.
7 I saw the tents of Cushan in trouble, the tent-curtains of Midian shuddering.7 In afflictione vidi tentoria Chusan;
turbantur pelles terrae Madian.
8 Yahweh, are you enraged with the rivers, are you angry with the sea, that you should mount yourchargers, your rescuing chariots?8 Numquid in fluminibus iratus es, Domine,
aut in fluminibus furor tuus
vel in mari indignatio tua?
Quia ascendes super equos tuos,
quadrigas tuas victrices.
9 You uncover your bow, and give the string its fill of arrows. PauseYou drench the soil with torrents;9 Suscitans suscitabis arcum tuum,
sagittis replevisti pharetram tuam. — Selah.
In fluvios scindes terram,
10 the mountains see you and tremble, great floods sweep by, the abyss roars aloud, lifting high itswaves.10 viderunt te et doluerunt montes.
Effuderunt aquas nubes,
dedit abyssus vocem suam,
in altum levavit manus suas.
11 Sun and moon stay inside their dwel ings, they flee at the light of your arrows, at the flash of yourlightning-spear.11 Sol et luna steterunt in habitaculo suo,
prae luce sagittarum tuarum discedunt,
prae splendore fulgurantis hastae tuae.
12 In rage you stride across the land, in anger you trample the nations.12 In fremitu calcabis terram,
in furore conteres gentes.
13 You marched to save your people, to save your anointed one; you wounded the head of the house ofthe wicked, laid bare the foundation to the rock. Pause13 Egressus es in salutem populi tui,
in salutem cum christo tuo.
Percussisti caput de domo impii,
denudasti fundamentum usque ad petram. — Selah.
14 With your shafts you pierced the leader of his warriors who stormed out with shouts of joy to scatterus, as if they meant to devour some poor wretch in their lair.14 Confodisti iaculis tuis caput bellatorum eius,
venientium ut turbo ad dispergendum me;
exsultatio eorum, sicut eius, qui devorat pauperem in abscondito.
15 With your horses you trampled through the sea, through the surging abyss!15 Viamfecisti in mari equis tuis,
in luto aquarum multarum.
16 When I heard, I trembled to the core, my lips quivered at the sound; my bones became disjointed andmy legs gave way beneath me. Calmly I await the day of anguish which is dawning on the people now attackingus.16 Audivi, et conturbatus est venter meus,
ad vocem contremuerunt labia mea. Ingreditur putredo in ossibus meis, et subterme vacillant gressus mei.
Conquiescam in die tribulationis,
ut ascendat super populum, qui invadit nos.
17 (For the fig tree is not to blossom, nor wil the vines bear fruit, the olive crop wil disappoint and thefields wil yield no food; the sheep wil vanish from the fold; no cattle in the stal s.)17 Ficus enim non florebit,
et non erit fructus in vineis;
mentietur opus olivae,
et arva non afferent cibum;
abscissum est de ovili pecus,
et non est armentum in praesepibus.
18 But I shal rejoice in Yahweh, I shall exult in God my Saviour.18 Ego autem in Domino gaudebo
et exsultabo in Deo salvatore meo.
19 Yahweh my Lord is my strength, he wil make my feet as light as a doe's, and set my steps on theheights. For the choirmaster; on stringed instruments.19 Dominus Deus fortitudo mea
et ponet pedes meos quasi cervorum et super excelsa mea deducet me.
Magistro chori. Ad sonitum chordarum.
