1 Now, the Reubenites and Gadites owned very large herds of cattle. Having seen that the territories ofJazer and Gilead formed an ideal region for raising stock,	1 I figli di Ruben e i figli di Gad avevano bestiame in numero molto grande; quando videro che la terra di Iazer e la terra di Gàlaad erano luoghi da bestiame,
2 the Gadites and Reubenites went to Moses, the priest Eleazar and the leaders of the community, andsaid to them,	2 i figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben vennero a parlare a Mosè, al sacerdote Eleàzaro e ai prìncipi della comunità e dissero:
3 'The territory of Ataroth, Dibon, Jazer, Nimrah, Heshbon, Elealeh, Sebam, Nebo and Beon,	3 «Ataròt, Dibon, Iazer, Nimra, Chesbon, Elalè, Sebam, Nebo e Beon,
4 which Yahweh has conquered before the advancing community of Israel, is ideal land for raisingstock, and your servants are cattle breeders.	4 terre che il Signore ha colpito alla presenza della comunità d'Israele, sono terre da bestiame e i tuoi servi hanno appunto il bestiame».
5 So', they said, 'if you approve, give your servants this land for us to own; do not make us cross theJordan.'	5 Aggiunsero: «Se abbiamo trovato grazia ai tuoi occhi, sia concesso ai tuoi servi il possesso di questa regione: non farci passare il Giordano».
6 Moses said to the Gadites and Reubenites, 'Do you intend your brothers to go into battle while youstay here?	6 Ma Mosè rispose ai figli di Gad e ai figli di Ruben: «Andrebbero dunque i vostri fratelli in guerra e voi ve ne stareste qui?
7 Why are you discouraging the Israelites from crossing to the country which Yahweh has given them?	7 Perché volete scoraggiare gli Israeliti dal passare nella terra che il Signore ha dato loro?
8 Your fathers behaved in the same way when I sent them from Kadesh-Barnea to see the country,	8 Così fecero i vostri padri, quando li mandai da Kades-Barnea per esplorare la terra.
9 for, having gone as far as the Val ey of Eshcol and seen the country, they discouraged the Israelitesfrom entering the country which Yahweh had given them.	9 Salirono fino alla valle di Escol e, dopo aver esplorato la terra, scoraggiarono gli Israeliti dall'entrare nella terra che il Signore aveva loro dato.
10 Hence Yahweh's anger was aroused that day and he swore this oath,	10 Così l'ira del Signore si accese in quel giorno ed egli giurò:
11 "No man of twenty years and over, who left Egypt, shal set eyes on the country which I promised onoath to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob . . . , for they have not fol owed me absolutely,	11 “Gli uomini che sono usciti dall'Egitto, dai vent'anni in su, non vedranno mai la terra che ho promesso con giuramento ad Abramo, a Isacco e a Giacobbe, perché non mi hanno seguito pienamente,
12 except for Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite, and Joshua son of Nun: these indeed havefol owed Yahweh absolutely."	12 se non Caleb, figlio di Iefunnè, il Kenizzita, e Giosuè, figlio di Nun, che hanno seguito il Signore pienamente”.
13 Yahweh's anger being aroused by Israel, he made them wander in the desert for forty years, untilthe generation that offended Yahweh had all disappeared.	13 L'ira del Signore si accese dunque contro Israele; lo fece errare nel deserto per quarant'anni, finché non fosse finita tutta la generazione che aveva agito male agli occhi del Signore.
14 And now you rise up in your father's place, offshoot of sinful stock, to increase Yahweh's burninganger with Israel even more!	14 Ed ecco, voi sorgete al posto dei vostri padri, razza di uomini peccatori, per aumentare ancora l'ardore dell'ira del Signore contro Israele.
15 If you turn away from him, he wil prolong the time spent in the desert, and you wil bring about thisentire people's ruin.'	15 Perché, se voi vi ritraete dal seguirlo, il Signore continuerà a lasciarlo nel deserto e voi avrete causato la perdita di tutto questo popolo».
16 They came to Moses and said, 'We should like to build sheepfolds here for our flocks and towns forour little ones.	16 Ma quelli si avvicinarono a lui e gli dissero: «Costruiremo qui recinti per il nostro bestiame e città per i nostri fanciulli;
17 We ourselves wil take up arms and lead the Israelites until we have brought them to the placeappointed for them, while our little ones stay in the fortified towns to be safe from the local inhabitants.	17 ma, quanto a noi, ci armeremo in fretta, per marciare davanti agli Israeliti, finché li avremo introdotti nel luogo destinato loro. Intanto, i nostri fanciulli dimoreranno nelle città fortificate per timore degli abitanti della regione.
18 We wil not return to our homes until every one of the Israelites has taken possession of his heritage.	18 Non torneremo alle nostre case, finché ogni Israelita non abbia ereditato ciascuno la sua eredità;
19 For we shall have no heritage with them on the other bank of the Jordan or beyond, since ourheritage has fal en to us here, east of the Jordan.'	19 non prenderemo nulla in eredità con loro al di là del Giordano e più oltre, perché la nostra eredità ci è toccata da questa parte del Giordano, a oriente».
20 Moses said to them, 'If you do as you have said, if you are prepared to fight before Yahweh,	20 Allora Mosè disse loro: «Se fate questo, se vi armerete davanti al Signore per andare a combattere,
21 and if al those of you who bear arms cross the Jordan before Yahweh, until he has driven all hisenemies out before him,	21 se tutti quelli di voi che si armeranno passeranno il Giordano davanti al Signore, finché egli abbia scacciato i suoi nemici dalla sua presenza,
22 then, once the country has become subject to Yahweh, you may go back, and will have dischargedyour obligation to Yahweh and Israel, and Yahweh wil consider this territory yours.	22 se non tornerete fin quando la terra sia stata sottomessa davanti al Signore, voi sarete innocenti di fronte al Signore e di fronte a Israele, e questa terra sarà vostra proprietà alla presenza del Signore.
23 But if you do not, you wil sin against Yahweh, and be sure your sin wil find you out.	23 Ma se non fate così, voi peccherete contro il Signore; sappiate che il vostro peccato vi raggiungerà.
24 Build towns, then, for your little ones and folds for your flocks; but do what you have promised.'	24 Costruitevi pure città per i vostri fanciulli e recinti per le vostre greggi, ma fate quello che la vostra bocca ha promesso».
25 The Gadites and Reubenites said to Moses, 'Your servants will do as my lord directs.	25 I figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben dissero a Mosè: «I tuoi servi faranno quello che il mio signore comanda.
26 Our little ones, our wives, our flocks and al our livestock wil stay in the towns of Gilead,	26 I nostri fanciulli, le nostre donne, le nostre greggi e tutto il nostro bestiame rimarranno qui nelle città di Gàlaad;
27 but your servants, each armed for war, will cross in Yahweh's name and fight, as my lord says.'	27 ma i tuoi servi, tutti armati per la guerra, andranno a combattere davanti al Signore, come dice il mio signore».
28 So Moses gave orders about them to the priest Eleazar, Joshua son of Nun, and the heads offamilies in the Israelite tribes.	28 Allora Mosè diede per loro ordini al sacerdote Eleàzaro, a Giosuè, figlio di Nun, e ai capi delle famiglie delle tribù degli Israeliti.
29 Moses said to them, 'If the Gadites and Reubenites, al those under arms, cross the Jordan with youto fight in Yahweh's name, then, once the country has become subject to you, you wil give them the territory ofGilead as theirs.	29 Mosè disse loro: «Se i figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben passeranno con voi il Giordano tutti armati per combattere davanti al Signore e se la terra sarà sottomessa davanti a voi, darete loro in possesso la terra di Gàlaad.
30 But if they will not cross with you under arms, they wil receive their domains in Canaan with the restof you.'	30 Ma se non passeranno armati con voi, avranno la loro proprietà in mezzo a voi nella terra di Canaan».
31 To this, the Gadites and Reubenites replied, 'What Yahweh has said to your servants, we shal do.	31 I figli di Gad e i figli di Ruben risposero: «Faremo come il Signore ha ordinato ai tuoi servi.
32 Under arms, we shall cross in Yahweh's name into Canaan, so that ownership of our heritage onthis side of the Jordan will be ours.'	32 Passeremo armati davanti al Signore nella terra di Canaan, ma, quanto a noi, il possesso della nostra eredità è di qua dal Giordano».
33 Moses then gave them -- the Gadites, the Reubenites and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph-- the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bashan, the country and the townswithin its territory, and the country's frontier-towns.	33 Mosè dunque diede ai figli di Gad e ai figli di Ruben e a metà della tribù di Manasse, figlio di Giuseppe, il regno di Sicon, re degli Amorrei, e il regno di Og, re di Basan: il territorio con le sue città comprese entro i confini, le città del territorio che si stendeva all’intorno.
34 The Gadites rebuilt Dibon, Ataroth, Aroer,	34 I figli di Gad ricostruirono Dibon, Ataròt, Aroèr,
35 Atroth-Shophan, Jazer, Jogbehah,	35 Atròt-Sofan, Iazer, Iogbea,
36 Beth-Nimrah and Beth-Haran as fortified towns with folds for the flocks.	36 Bet-Nimra e Bet-Aran, città fortificate, e fecero recinti per le greggi.
37 The Reubenites rebuilt Heshbon, Elealeh, Kiriathaim,	37 I figli di Ruben ricostruirono Chesbon, Elalè, Kiriatàim,
38 Nebo and Baal-Meon (the names of which were altered), and Sibmah, giving new names to thetowns which they rebuilt.	38 Nebo e Baal-Meon, i cui nomi furono mutati, e Sibma, e diedero nomi alle città che avevano ricostruito.
39 The descendants of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead. They conquered it and drove out theAmorites who were there.	39 I figli di Machir, figlio di Manasse, andarono nella terra di Gàlaad, la presero e ne cacciarono gli Amorrei che vi abitavano.
40 Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled there.	40 Mosè allora diede Gàlaad a Machir, figlio di Manasse, che vi si stabilì.
41 Jair son of Manasseh went and seized their encampments, renaming them the Encampments ofJair.	41 Anche Iair, figlio di Manasse, andò e prese i loro villaggi e li chiamò villaggi di Iair.
42 Nobah went and seized Kenat with its dependent townships, and cal ed it Nobah after himself.	42 Nobach andò e prese Kenat con le dipendenze e la chiamò con il proprio nome, Nobach.
