Numbers 17

NEW JERUSALEM	LXX
1 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,	1 και ειπεν κυριος προς μωυσην
2 'Tel Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to pick the censers out of the smouldering remains and scatterthe fire from them away from here,	2 και προς ελεαζαρ τον υιον ααρων τον ιερεα ανελεσθε τα πυρεια τα χαλκα εκ μεσου των κατακεκαυμενων και το πυρ το αλλοτριον τουτο σπειρον εκει οτι ηγιασαν
3 for these sinful censers have become sanctified at the price of human lives. Since they were broughtbefore Yahweh and thus became consecrated, they must be hammered into sheets to cover the altar. They willbe an object-lesson to the Israelites.'	3 τα πυρεια των αμαρτωλων τουτων εν ταις ψυχαις αυτων και ποιησον αυτα λεπιδας ελατας περιθεμα τω θυσιαστηριω οτι προσηνεχθησαν εναντι κυριου και ηγιασθησαν και εγενοντο εις σημειον τοις υιοις ισραηλ
4 The priest Eleazar took the bronze censers which had been carried by the men destroyed by the fire.They were hammered into sheets to cover the altar.	4 και ελαβεν ελεαζαρ υιος ααρων του ιερεως τα πυρεια τα χαλκα οσα προσηνεγκαν οι κατακεκαυμενοι και προσεθηκαν αυτα περιθεμα τω θυσιαστηριω
5 They are a reminder to the Israelites that no unauthorised person, no one not of Aaron's line, mayapproach and offer incense before Yahweh, on pain of suffering the fate of Korah and his party, as Yahweh hadsaid through Moses.	5 μνημοσυνον τοις υιοις ισραηλ οπως αν μη προσελθη μηθεις αλλογενης ος ουκ εστιν εκ του σπερματος ααρων επιθειναι θυμιαμα εναντι κυριου και ουκ εσται ωσπερ κορε και η επισυστασις αυτου καθα ελαλησεν κυριος εν χειρι μωυση
6 On the following day, the whole community of Israelites were muttering against Moses and Aaron andsaying, 'You are responsible for killing Yahweh's people!'	6 και εγογγυσαν οι υιοι ισραηλ τη επαυριον επι μωυσην και ααρων λεγοντες υμεις απεκταγκατε τον λαον κυριου
7 Now, as the community was banding together against Moses and Aaron, they turned towards theTent of Meeting, and there was the cloud covering it, and the glory of Yahweh appeared.	7 και εγενετο εν τω επισυστρεφεσθαι την συναγωγην επι μωυσην και ααρων και ωρμησαν επι την σκηνην του μαρτυριου και τηνδε εκαλυψεν αυτην η νεφελη και ωφθη η δοξα κυριου
8 Moses and Aaron then went to the front of the Tent of Meeting.	8 και εισηλθεν μωυσης και ααρων κατα προσωπον της σκηνης του μαρτυριου
9 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	9 και ελαλησεν κυριος προς μωυσην και ααρων λεγων
10 'Get away from this community. I am going to destroy them here and now.' They threw themselveson their faces.	10 εκχωρησατε εκ μεσου της συναγωγης ταυτης και εξαναλωσω αυτους εις απαξ και επεσον επι προσωπον αυτων
11 Moses then said to Aaron, 'Take a censer, put fire in it from the altar, place incense on it and hurryto the community to perform the rite of expiation for them: for retribution has come from Yahweh, plague hasbroken out.'	11 και ειπεν μωυσης προς ααρων λαβε το πυρειον και επιθες επ' αυτο πυρ απο του θυσιαστηριου και επιβαλε επ' αυτο θυμιαμα και απενεγκε το ταχος εις την παρεμβολην και εξιλασαι περι αυτων εξηλθεν γαρ οργη απο προσωπου κυριου ηρκται θραυειν τον λαον
12 Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the middle of the community, but plague had alreadybroken out among the people. He put in the incense and performed the rite of expiation for the people.	12 και ελαβεν ααρων καθαπερ ελαλησεν αυτω μωυσης και εδραμεν εις την συναγωγην και ηδη ενηρκτο η θραυσις εν τω λαω και επεβαλεν το θυμιαμα και εξιλασατο περι του λαου
13 Then he stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.	13 και εστη ανα μεσον των τεθνηκοτων και των ζωντων και εκοπασεν η θραυσις
14 There were fourteen thousand seven hundred victims of the plague, apart from those who diedbecause of Korah.	14 και εγενοντο οι τεθνηκοτες εν τη θραυσει τεσσαρες και δεκα χιλιαδες και επτακοσιοι χωρις των τεθνηκοτων ενεκεν κορε
15 Aaron then went back to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting; the plague had been halted.	15 και επεστρεψεν ααρων προς μωυσην επι την θυραν της σκηνης του μαρτυριου και εκοπασεν η θραυσις
16 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	16 και ελαλησεν κυριος προς μωυσην λεγων
17 'Tel the Israelites to give you a branch for each of their families, one for each leader of each family:twelve branches. Write the name of each on his branch;	17 λαλησον τοις υιοις ισραηλ και λαβε παρ' αυτων ραβδον ραβδον κατ' οικους πατριων παρα παντων των αρχοντων αυτων κατ' οικους πατριων αυτων δωδεκα ραβδους και εκαστου το ονομα αυτου επιγραψον επι της ραβδου αυτου
18 and on the branch of Levi write Aaron's name, since the head of the Levite families must have abranch too.	18 και το ονομα ααρων επιγραψον επι της ραβδου λευι εστιν γαρ ραβδος μια κατα φυλην οικου πατριων αυτων δωσουσιν
19 You wil then put them inside the Tent of Meeting in front of the Testimony, where I make myselfknown to you.	19 και θησεις αυτας εν τη σκηνη του μαρτυριου κατεναντι του μαρτυριου εν οις γνωσθησομαι σοι εκει
20 The man whose branch sprouts will be the one I have chosen; this is how I shal put an end to themutterings of the Israelites about you.'	20 και εσται ο ανθρωπος ον εαν εκλεξωμαι αυτον η ραβδος αυτου εκβλαστησει και περιελω απ' εμου τον γογγυσμον των υιων ισραηλ α αυτοι γογγυζουσιν εφ' υμιν
21 Moses spoke to the Israelites, and al their leaders gave him one branch each, twelve branches in alfor their families; Aaron's branch was among them.	21 και ελαλησεν μωυσης τοις υιοις ισραηλ και εδωκαν αυτω παντες οι αρχοντες αυτων ραβδον τω αρχοντι τω ενι ραβδον κατα αρχοντα κατ' οικους πατριων αυτων δωδεκα ραβδους και η ραβδος ααρων ανα μεσον των ραβδων αυτων
22 Moses placed them before Yahweh in the Tent of the Testimony.	22 και απεθηκεν μωυσης τας ραβδους εναντι κυριου εν τη σκηνη του μαρτυριου
23 On the fol owing day Moses went to the Tent of the Testimony and there, already sprouting, wasAaron's branch, representing the House of Levi; buds had formed, flowers had bloomed and almonds hadalready ripened.	23 και εγενετο τη επαυριον και εισηλθεν μωυσης και ααρων εις την σκηνην του μαρτυριου και ιδου εβλαστησεν η ραβδος ααρων εις οικον λευι και εξηνεγκεν βλαστον και εξηνθησεν ανθη και εβλαστησεν καρυα
24 Moses then brought out all the branches from before Yahweh to al the Israelites; they examinedthem and each one took back his own branch.	24 και εξηνεγκεν μωυσης πασας τας ραβδους απο προσωπου κυριου προς παντας υιους ισραηλ και ειδον και ελαβον εκαστος την ραβδον αυτου
25 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Put Aaron's branch back in front of the Testimony, where it wil have itsritual place as a warning to the rebel ious; thus you will rid me of their muttering for good, without their incurringdeath.'	25 και ειπεν κυριος προς μωυσην αποθες την ραβδον ααρων ενωπιον των μαρτυριων εις διατηρησιν σημειον τοις υιοις των ανηκοων και παυσασθω ο γογγυσμος αυτων απ' εμου και ου μη αποθανωσιν
26 Moses did as Yahweh had ordered. That is what he did.	26 και εποιησεν μωυσης και ααρων καθα συνεταξεν κυριος τω μωυση ουτως εποιησαν
27 The Israelites then said to Moses, 'We are lost! We are dead men! We are al dead men!	27 και ειπαν οι υιοι ισραηλ προς μωυσην λεγοντες ιδου εξανηλωμεθα απολωλαμεν παρανηλωμεθα
28 Anyone who approaches Yahweh's Dwel ing with an offering wil die. Are we to be doomed to thelast man?'	28 πας ο απτομενος της σκηνης κυριου αποθνησκει εως εις τελος αποθανωμεν
