1 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,	1 Yahvé dit à Moïse:
2 'Tel Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to pick the censers out of the smouldering remains and scatterthe fire from them away from here,	2 “Voici ce que tu diras à Éléazar, fils d’Aaron le prêtre: Retire les encensoirs d’entre les flammes et jettes-en le feu au loin, car ils sont consacrés.
3 for these sinful censers have become sanctified at the price of human lives. Since they were broughtbefore Yahweh and thus became consecrated, they must be hammered into sheets to cover the altar. They willbe an object-lesson to the Israelites.'	3 Les encensoirs de ces hommes qui ont péché et qui en sont morts, te serviront pour faire les plaques du revêtement de l’autel. Ces encensoirs sont saints, puisqu’ils ont été en contact avec Yahvé. Ils seront un signe pour les Israélites.”
4 The priest Eleazar took the bronze censers which had been carried by the men destroyed by the fire.They were hammered into sheets to cover the altar.	4 Éléazar, le prêtre, prit donc les encensoirs de cuivre qui appartenaient à ceux qui avaient été brûlés, et on en fit des plaques pour le revêtement de l’autel.
5 They are a reminder to the Israelites that no unauthorised person, no one not of Aaron's line, mayapproach and offer incense before Yahweh, on pain of suffering the fate of Korah and his party, as Yahweh hadsaid through Moses.	5 Elles sont là pour rappeler aux Israélites que personne qui soit étranger à la race d’Aaron, ne peut s’approcher pour faire fumer l’encens devant Yahvé. Sinon, il aura le sort de Coré et de sa bande que Yahvé avait avertis par la voix de Moïse.
6 On the following day, the whole community of Israelites were muttering against Moses and Aaron andsaying, 'You are responsible for killing Yahweh's people!'	6 Le lendemain, toute la communauté des Israélites murmura contre Moïse et Aaron: “C’est vous, dirent-ils, qui avez fait mourir le peuple de Yahvé!”
7 Now, as the community was banding together against Moses and Aaron, they turned towards theTent of Meeting, and there was the cloud covering it, and the glory of Yahweh appeared.	7 Tandis que la communauté s’attroupait contre Moïse et Aaron, ils se tournèrent vers la Tente du Rendez-Vous: la nuée l’avait couverte et la Gloire de Yahvé apparut.
8 Moses and Aaron then went to the front of the Tent of Meeting.	8 Alors Moïse et Aaron s’approchèrent de la Tente
9 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	9 et Yahvé dit à Moïse:
10 'Get away from this community. I am going to destroy them here and now.' They threw themselveson their faces.	10 “Retirez-vous du milieu de cette communauté, et je vais l’exterminer sur-le-champ!” Ils tombèrent la face contre terre.
11 Moses then said to Aaron, 'Take a censer, put fire in it from the altar, place incense on it and hurryto the community to perform the rite of expiation for them: for retribution has come from Yahweh, plague hasbroken out.'	11 Moïse dit alors à Aaron: “Prends ton encensoir, mets dedans du feu de l’autel, dispose l’encens par-dessus et cours vers la communauté avec ton encensoir. Tu feras l’expiation pour eux, car la colère de Yahvé s’est déchaînée et le châtiment commence.”
12 Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the middle of the community, but plague had alreadybroken out among the people. He put in the incense and performed the rite of expiation for the people.	12 Aaron fit comme Moïse avait dit, et il courut vers la communauté. Déjà le fléau frappait le peuple. Aaron disposa l’encens et fit l’expiation sur le peuple;
13 Then he stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.	13 il se tint debout entre les morts et les vivants, et le fléau s’arrêta.
14 There were fourteen thousand seven hundred victims of the plague, apart from those who diedbecause of Korah.	14 Ceux qui moururent frappés par le châtiment étaient au nombre de 14 700, sans compter ceux qui étaient morts à cause de Coré.
15 Aaron then went back to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting; the plague had been halted.	15 Lorsque Aaron revint vers Moïse, à l’entrée de la Tente du Rendez-Vous, le fléau avait cessé.
16 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	16 Yahvé dit à Moïse:
17 'Tel the Israelites to give you a branch for each of their families, one for each leader of each family:twelve branches. Write the name of each on his branch;	17 “Dis aux Israélites de t’apporter une baguette par tribu, une baguette de la part de chacun des chefs de tribu. Cela fera donc douze baguettes et tu écriras le nom de chacun sur sa baguette.
18 and on the branch of Levi write Aaron's name, since the head of the Levite families must have abranch too.	18 Sur la baguette de Lévi, tu écriras le nom d’Aaron, car il n’y aura qu’une baguette par tribu.
19 You wil then put them inside the Tent of Meeting in front of the Testimony, where I make myselfknown to you.	19 Tu les déposeras dans la Tente devant le Témoignage, là où je vous donne rendez-vous,
20 The man whose branch sprouts will be the one I have chosen; this is how I shal put an end to themutterings of the Israelites about you.'	20 et celui dont la baguette fleurira, c’est lui que j’ai choisi. Ainsi j’en finirai avec toutes ces plaintes des Israélites contre moi - je parle de leurs plaintes contre vous.”
21 Moses spoke to the Israelites, and al their leaders gave him one branch each, twelve branches in alfor their families; Aaron's branch was among them.	21 Moïse transmit ces paroles aux Israélites et chacun des chefs lui donna une baguette. Chaque tribu avait sa baguette, que portait son chef, soit douze baguettes. La baguette d’Aaron était avec les autres.
22 Moses placed them before Yahweh in the Tent of the Testimony.	22 Moïse déposa ces baguettes devant Yahvé dans la Tente du Témoignage.
23 On the fol owing day Moses went to the Tent of the Testimony and there, already sprouting, wasAaron's branch, representing the House of Levi; buds had formed, flowers had bloomed and almonds hadalready ripened.	23 Le lendemain, lorsque Moïse entra dans la Tente du Témoignage, la baguette de la tribu de Lévi apportée par Aaron avait fleuri: des boutons étaient apparus, des fleurs étaient écloses et les amandes avaient mûri.
24 Moses then brought out all the branches from before Yahweh to al the Israelites; they examinedthem and each one took back his own branch.	24 Moïse retira donc toutes les baguettes de devant Yahvé et les apporta aux Israélites. Ils les virent et chacun reprit sa baguette.
25 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Put Aaron's branch back in front of the Testimony, where it wil have itsritual place as a warning to the rebel ious; thus you will rid me of their muttering for good, without their incurringdeath.'	25 Yahvé dit alors à Moïse: “Remets la baguette d’Aaron devant le Témoignage; elle y restera et ce sera un avertissement pour les rebelles. Ainsi tu éloigneras de moi leurs murmures et ils ne mourront pas.”
26 Moses did as Yahweh had ordered. That is what he did.	26 Moïse fit comme Yahvé le lui avait ordonné.
27 The Israelites then said to Moses, 'We are lost! We are dead men! We are al dead men!	27 Les Israélites dirent à Moïse: “Nous mourons, nous sommes perdus! Nous allons tous mourir!
28 Anyone who approaches Yahweh's Dwel ing with an offering wil die. Are we to be doomed to thelast man?'	28 En effet, quiconque s’approche de la Demeure de Yahvé en meurt. Allons-nous tous mourir ainsi?”
