Numbers 17

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 Yahweh then spoke to Moses and said,	1 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
2 'Tel Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to pick the censers out of the smouldering remains and scatterthe fire from them away from here,	2 "Dis à Eléazar, fils d'Aaron, le prêtre, qu'il enlève les encensoirs du milieu des braises et disperseau loin ce feu,
3 for these sinful censers have become sanctified at the price of human lives. Since they were broughtbefore Yahweh and thus became consecrated, they must be hammered into sheets to cover the altar. They willbe an object-lesson to the Israelites.'	3 car ces encensoirs de péché sont sanctifiés, au prix de la vie de ces hommes. Puisqu'on les aapportés devant Yahvé et qu'ils sont consacrés, qu'on en batte le métal en plaques pour recouvrir l'autel. Ilsserviront de signe aux Israélites."
4 The priest Eleazar took the bronze censers which had been carried by the men destroyed by the fire.They were hammered into sheets to cover the altar.	4 Eléazar, le prêtre, prit les encensoirs de bronze qu'avaient apportés les hommes que le feu avaitdétruits. On les battit en plaques pour recouvrir l'autel.
5 They are a reminder to the Israelites that no unauthorised person, no one not of Aaron's line, mayapproach and offer incense before Yahweh, on pain of suffering the fate of Korah and his party, as Yahweh hadsaid through Moses.	5 Elles rappellent aux Israélites qu'aucun profane, étranger à la descendance d'Aaron, ne doits'approcher pour faire fumer l'encens devant Yahvé, sous peine de subir le sort de Coré et de son groupe, selonce qu'avait dit Yahvé par l'intermédiaire de Moïse.
6 On the following day, the whole community of Israelites were muttering against Moses and Aaron andsaying, 'You are responsible for killing Yahweh's people!'	6 Le lendemain, toute la communauté des Israélites murmura contre Moïse et Aaron, en disant:"Vous avez fait périr le peuple de Yahvé."
7 Now, as the community was banding together against Moses and Aaron, they turned towards theTent of Meeting, and there was the cloud covering it, and the glory of Yahweh appeared.	7 Or, comme la communauté s'attroupait contre Moïse et Aaron, ceux-ci se tournèrent vers la Tentedu Rendez-vous. Voici que la Nuée la recouvrit et que la gloire de Yahvé apparut.
8 Moses and Aaron then went to the front of the Tent of Meeting.	8 Moïse et Aaron se rendirent alors devant la Tente du Rendez-vous.
9 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	9 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
10 'Get away from this community. I am going to destroy them here and now.' They threw themselveson their faces.	10 "Sortez du milieu de cette communauté; je vais la détruire en un instant." Ils tombèrent facecontre terre.
11 Moses then said to Aaron, 'Take a censer, put fire in it from the altar, place incense on it and hurryto the community to perform the rite of expiation for them: for retribution has come from Yahweh, plague hasbroken out.'	11 Puis Moïse dit à Aaron: "Prends l'encensoir, mets-y du feu pris sur l'autel, dépose dessusl'encens et hâte-toi d'aller près de la communauté pour faire sur elle le rite d'expiation. Car la Colère est sortie dedevant Yahvé: la Plaie a commencé."
12 Aaron took it as Moses said and ran into the middle of the community, but plague had alreadybroken out among the people. He put in the incense and performed the rite of expiation for the people.	12 Aaron le prit, comme avait dit Moïse, et courut au milieu de l'assemblée; mais la Plaie avait déjàcommencé parmi le peuple. Il mit l'encens et fit le rite d'expiation sur le peuple.
13 Then he stood between the living and the dead, and the plague stopped.	13 Puis il se tint entre les morts et les vivants; la Plaie s'arrêta.
14 There were fourteen thousand seven hundred victims of the plague, apart from those who diedbecause of Korah.	14 Il y eut 14.700 victimes de cette plaie, sans compter ceux qui étaient morts à cause de Coré.
15 Aaron then went back to Moses at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting; the plague had been halted.	15 Puis Aaron revint auprès de Moïse à l'entrée de la Tente du Rendez-vous: la Plaie s'était arrêtée.
16 Yahweh spoke to Moses and said,	16 Yahvé parla à Moïse et dit:
17 'Tel the Israelites to give you a branch for each of their families, one for each leader of each family:twelve branches. Write the name of each on his branch;	17 "Parle aux Israélites. Qu'ils te remettent, pour chaque famille, un rameau; que tous leurs chefs,pour leurs familles, te remettent douze rameaux. Tu écriras le nom de chacun sur son rameau;
18 and on the branch of Levi write Aaron's name, since the head of the Levite families must have abranch too.	18 et sur le rameau de Lévi tu écriras le nom d'Aaron, car il y aura un rameau pour le chef desfamilles de Lévi.
19 You wil then put them inside the Tent of Meeting in front of the Testimony, where I make myselfknown to you.	19 Tu les déposeras ensuite dans la Tente du Rendez-vous, devant le Témoignage où je merencontre avec toi.
20 The man whose branch sprouts will be the one I have chosen; this is how I shal put an end to themutterings of the Israelites about you.'	20 L'homme dont le rameau bourgeonnera sera celui que je choisis; ainsi je ne laisserai pas monterjusqu'à moi les murmures que les Israélites profèrent contre vous."
21 Moses spoke to the Israelites, and al their leaders gave him one branch each, twelve branches in alfor their families; Aaron's branch was among them.	21 Moïse parla aux Israélites, et tous leurs princes lui remirent chacun un rameau, douze rameauxpour l'ensemble de leurs familles patriarcales; parmi eux était le rameau d'Aaron.
22 Moses placed them before Yahweh in the Tent of the Testimony.	22 Moïse les déposa devant Yahvé dans la Tente du Témoignage.
23 On the fol owing day Moses went to the Tent of the Testimony and there, already sprouting, wasAaron's branch, representing the House of Levi; buds had formed, flowers had bloomed and almonds hadalready ripened.	23 Le lendemain, quand Moïse vint à la Tente du Témoignage, le rameau d'Aaron, pour la maisonde Lévi, avait bourgeonné: des bourgeons avaient éclos, des fleurs s'étaient épanouies et des amandes avaientmûri.
24 Moses then brought out all the branches from before Yahweh to al the Israelites; they examinedthem and each one took back his own branch.	24 Moïse reprit tous les rameaux de devant Yahvé et les apporta à tous les Israélites; ilsconstatèrent, et chacun reprit son rameau.
25 Yahweh then said to Moses, 'Put Aaron's branch back in front of the Testimony, where it wil have itsritual place as a warning to the rebel ious; thus you will rid me of their muttering for good, without their incurringdeath.'	25 Yahvé dit alors à Moïse: "Remets le rameau d'Aaron devant le Témoignage où il aura sa placerituelle, comme un signe pour ces rebelles. Il réduira à néant leurs murmures qui ne monteront plus jusqu'à moi,et eux ne mourront pas."
26 Moses did as Yahweh had ordered. That is what he did.	26 Moïse fit comme Yahvé le lui avait ordonné. Il fit ainsi.
27 The Israelites then said to Moses, 'We are lost! We are dead men! We are al dead men!	27 Les Israélites dirent à Moïse: "Nous voici perdus! Nous périssons! Nous périssons tous!
28 Anyone who approaches Yahweh's Dwel ing with an offering wil die. Are we to be doomed to thelast man?'	28 Quiconque s'approche de la Demeure de Yahvé pour une offrande meurt. Allons-nous à notreperte jusqu'au dernier?"
