Jonah 4

1 This made Jonah very indignant; he fell into a rage.	1 - E Giona ne provò gran dispiacere, e con parole risentite,
2 He prayed to Yahweh and said, 'Please, Yahweh, isn't this what I said would happen when I was stil inmy own country? That was why I first tried to flee to Tarshish, since I knew you were a tender, compassionateGod, slow to anger, rich in faithful love, who relents about inflicting disaster.	2 fece orazione al Signore e disse: «Permetti di grazia, Signore: non lo diceva io quando era ancora nel mio paese? E per questo mi affrettai a fuggire a Tarsis, perchè ti conosco che sei un Dio clemente e misericordioso, pieno di pazienza e molto compassionevole e che perdoni il mal fatto.
3 So now, Yahweh, please take my life, for I might as wel be dead as go on living.'	3 E ora, o Signore, prenditi te ne prego l'anima mia, perchè mi è più cara la morte che la vita!».
4 Yahweh replied, 'Are you right to be angry?'	4 E il Signore disse: «E ti pare ben fatto di risentirti così?».
5 Jonah then left the city and sat down to the east of the city. There he made himself a shelter and satunder it in the shade, to see what would happen to the city.	5 E Giona uscì dalla città e si collocò ad oriente della città e ivi si formò un frascato e vi si sedette sotto all'ombra, aspettando di vedere ciò che sarebbe per sopravvenire alla città.
6 Yahweh God then ordained that a castor-oil plant should grow up over Jonah to give shade for his headand soothe his ill-humour; Jonah was delighted with the castor-oil plant.	6 E il Signore aveva preparato un'edera che salì alta sopra il capo di Giona per ombreggiargli la testa e proteggerlo contro il sole, perchè incominciava a soffrire il caldo; e Giona provò un gran sollievo per quell'edera.
7 But at dawn the next day, God ordained that a worm should attack the castor-oil plant -- and it withered.	7 Ma il Signore preparò per il giorno seguente, allo spuntar dell'alba, un verme, che rosicchiò l'edera e la fece seccare.
8 Next, when the sun rose, God ordained that there should be a scorching east wind; the sun beat downso hard on Jonah's head that he was overcome and begged for death, saying, 'I might as wel be dead as go onliving.'	8 E nato già il sole, il Signore ordinò che si levasse un vento caldo e cocente, e il sole dardeggiava sul capo di Giona che soffocava e si desiderava la morte e andava dicendo: «È meglio per me morire che vivere!».
9 God said to Jonah, 'Are you right to be angry about the castor-oil plant?' He replied, 'I have every rightto be angry, mortally angry!'	9 E il Signore disse a Giona: «Ti par ben fatto risentirti così per causa di un'edera?». Rispose: «Ho ben ragione di risentirmi, non mi manca che la morte!».
10 Yahweh replied, 'You are concerned for the castor-oil plant which has not cost you any effort andwhich you did not grow, which came up in a night and has perished in a night.	10 E il Signore soggiunse: «Tu, per un'erba che non ti ha costato nessuna fatica e non hai fatto crescere, che in una notte è nata e in una notte è perita, te ne duoli:
11 So why should I not be concerned for Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundredand twenty thousand people who cannot tel their right hand from their left, to say nothing of al the animals?'	11 ed io non dovrò dolermi per una grande città come Ninive, nella quale vi sono più di centoventimila persone che non sanno discernere tra la mano destra e la sinistra, e animali in gran numero?».
