Jonah 4

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 This made Jonah very indignant; he fell into a rage.	1 Jonás, se disgustó mucho por esto y se irritó;
2 He prayed to Yahweh and said, 'Please, Yahweh, isn't this what I said would happen when I was stil inmy own country? That was why I first tried to flee to Tarshish, since I knew you were a tender, compassionateGod, slow to anger, rich in faithful love, who relents about inflicting disaster.	2 y oró a Yahveh diciendo: «¡Ah, Yahveh!, ¿no es esto lo que yo decía cuando estaba todavía en mi tierra? Fue por eso por lo que me apresuré a huir a Tarsis. Porque bien sabía yo que tú eres un Dios clemente y misericordioso, tardo a la cólera y rico en amor, que se arrepiente del mal.
3 So now, Yahweh, please take my life, for I might as wel be dead as go on living.'	3 Y ahora, Yahveh, te suplico que me quites la vida, porque mejor me es la muerte que la vida».
4 Yahweh replied, 'Are you right to be angry?'	4 Mas Yahveh dijo: «¿Te parece bien irritarte?»
5 Jonah then left the city and sat down to the east of the city. There he made himself a shelter and satunder it in the shade, to see what would happen to the city.	5 Salió Jonás de la ciudad y se sentó al oriente de la ciudad; allí se hizo una cabaña bajo la cual se sentó a la sombra, hasta ver qué sucedía en la ciudad.
6 Yahweh God then ordained that a castor-oil plant should grow up over Jonah to give shade for his headand soothe his ill-humour; Jonah was delighted with the castor-oil plant.	6 Entonces Yahveh Dios dispuso una planta de ricino que creciese por encima de Jonás para dar sombra a su cabeza y librarle así de su mal. Jonás se puso muy contento por aquel ricino.
7 But at dawn the next day, God ordained that a worm should attack the castor-oil plant -- and it withered.	7 Pero al día siguiente, al rayar el alba, Yahveh mandó a un gusano, y el gusano picó al ricino, que se secó.
8 Next, when the sun rose, God ordained that there should be a scorching east wind; the sun beat downso hard on Jonah's head that he was overcome and begged for death, saying, 'I might as wel be dead as go onliving.'	8 Y al salir el sol, mandó Dios un sofocante viento solano. El sol hirió la cabeza de Jonás, y éste se desvaneció; se deseó la muerte y dijo: «¡Mejor me es la muerte que la vida!»
9 God said to Jonah, 'Are you right to be angry about the castor-oil plant?' He replied, 'I have every rightto be angry, mortally angry!'	9 Entonces Dios dijo a Jonás: «¿Te parece bien irritarte por ese ricino?» Respondió: «¡Sí, me parece bien irritarme hasta la muerte!»
10 Yahweh replied, 'You are concerned for the castor-oil plant which has not cost you any effort andwhich you did not grow, which came up in a night and has perished in a night.	10 Y Yahveh dijo: «Tu tienes lástima de un ricino por el que nada te fatigaste, que no hiciste tú crecer, que en el término de una noche fue y en el término de una noche feneció.
11 So why should I not be concerned for Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundredand twenty thousand people who cannot tel their right hand from their left, to say nothing of al the animals?'	11 ¿Y no voy a tener lástima yo de Nínive, la gran ciudad, en la que hay más de ciento veinte mil personas que no distinguen su derecha de su izquierda, y una gran cantidad de animales?»
