Jonah 4

1 This made Jonah very indignant; he fell into a rage.	1 Ma Giona si afflisse molto, e n'ebbe dispetto:
2 He prayed to Yahweh and said, 'Please, Yahweh, isn't this what I said would happen when I was stil inmy own country? That was why I first tried to flee to Tarshish, since I knew you were a tender, compassionateGod, slow to anger, rich in faithful love, who relents about inflicting disaster.	2 E fece orazione al Signore, e disse: Dimmi, ti prego, o Signore, non è egli questo quello, che io diceva, quando era ancora nel mio paese? E per questo mi affrettai a fuggire a Tharsis. Perocché io so, che tu se' un Dio clemente, e misericordioso, e paziente, e molto compassionevole, e che perdoni il mal fare.
3 So now, Yahweh, please take my life, for I might as wel be dead as go on living.'	3 Or tu, Signore, ripigliati di grazia l'anima mia, perchè è meglio per me il morire, che il vivere.
4 Yahweh replied, 'Are you right to be angry?'	4 E il Signore disse: Credi tu di aver ragione d'indispettirti?
5 Jonah then left the city and sat down to the east of the city. There he made himself a shelter and satunder it in the shade, to see what would happen to the city.	5 E Giona si parti dalla città, e si pose a sedere da levante della città, ed ivi si formò un frascato, e stava al coperto sotto di esso, per istare a vedere quel, che avvenisse alla città.
6 Yahweh God then ordained that a castor-oil plant should grow up over Jonah to give shade for his headand soothe his ill-humour; Jonah was delighted with the castor-oil plant.	6 E il Signore Dio avea preparato un'ellera, la quale si alzò a coprire la testa di Giona, e a fargli ombra, e custodirlo (perocché egli era scalmanato.) E fece grandissimo piacere a Giona quell'ellera.
7 But at dawn the next day, God ordained that a worm should attack the castor-oil plant -- and it withered.	7 E il Signore alla punta del dì seguente mandò un vermicciuolo, che punse l'ellera, ed ella si seccò.
8 Next, when the sun rose, God ordained that there should be a scorching east wind; the sun beat downso hard on Jonah's head that he was overcome and begged for death, saying, 'I might as wel be dead as go onliving.'	8 E nato che fu il sole, il Signore ordinò, che si levasse un vento caldo, che abbruciava: e il sole batteva sui capo di Giona, ed ei veniva meno, e si desiderava la morte, e disse: E' meglio per me il morire, che il vivere.
9 God said to Jonah, 'Are you right to be angry about the castor-oil plant?' He replied, 'I have every rightto be angry, mortally angry!'	9 Ma il Signore disse a Giona: Credi tu di aver ragione di disgustarti per ragion di quell ellera? E quegli disse: Mai si, che io son disgustato fino alla morte.
10 Yahweh replied, 'You are concerned for the castor-oil plant which has not cost you any effort andwhich you did not grow, which came up in a night and has perished in a night.	10 E il Signore disse: Tu t'inquieti per l'ellera, per cui non hai avuto fatica alcuna, né la hai fatta crescere, ed è nata in una notte, e in una notte se n'è andata.
11 So why should I not be concerned for Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundredand twenty thousand people who cannot tel their right hand from their left, to say nothing of al the animals?'	11 E io non avrò compassione di Ninive città grande, nella quale sono più di cento venti mila uomini, i quali non sanno discernere dalla mano destra, e la sinistra, e gran numero di giumenti?
