Jonah 4

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 This made Jonah very indignant; he fell into a rage.	1 Jonas en eut un grand dépit, et il se fâcha.
2 He prayed to Yahweh and said, 'Please, Yahweh, isn't this what I said would happen when I was stil inmy own country? That was why I first tried to flee to Tarshish, since I knew you were a tender, compassionateGod, slow to anger, rich in faithful love, who relents about inflicting disaster.	2 Il fit une prière à Yahvé: "Ah! Yahvé, dit-il, n'est-ce point là ce que je disais lorsque j'étais encoredans mon pays? C'est pourquoi je m'étais d'abord enfui à Tarsis; je savais en effet que tu es un Dieu de pitié et detendresse, lent à la colère, riche en grâce et te repentant du mal.
3 So now, Yahweh, please take my life, for I might as wel be dead as go on living.'	3 Maintenant, Yahvé, prends donc ma vie, car mieux vaut pour moi mourir que vivre."
4 Yahweh replied, 'Are you right to be angry?'	4 Yahvé répondit: "As-tu raison de te fâcher?"
5 Jonah then left the city and sat down to the east of the city. There he made himself a shelter and satunder it in the shade, to see what would happen to the city.	5 Jonas sortit de la ville et s'assit à l'orient de la ville; il se fit là une hutte et s'assit dessous, à l'ombre,pour voir ce qui arriverait dans la ville.
6 Yahweh God then ordained that a castor-oil plant should grow up over Jonah to give shade for his headand soothe his ill-humour; Jonah was delighted with the castor-oil plant.	6 Alors Yahvé Dieu fit qu'il y eut un ricin qui grandit au-dessus de Jonas, afin de donner de l'ombre à satête et de le délivrer ainsi de son mal. Jonas éprouva une grande joie à cause du ricin.
7 But at dawn the next day, God ordained that a worm should attack the castor-oil plant -- and it withered.	7 Mais, à la pointe de l'aube, le lendemain, Dieu fit qu'il y eut un ver qui piqua le ricin, celui-ci sécha.
8 Next, when the sun rose, God ordained that there should be a scorching east wind; the sun beat downso hard on Jonah's head that he was overcome and begged for death, saying, 'I might as wel be dead as go onliving.'	8 Puis, quand le soleil se leva, Dieu fit qu'il y eut un vent d'est brûlant; le soleil darda ses rayons sur latête de Jonas qui fut accablé. Il demanda la mort et dit: "Mieux vaut pour moi mourir que vivre."
9 God said to Jonah, 'Are you right to be angry about the castor-oil plant?' He replied, 'I have every rightto be angry, mortally angry!'	9 Dieu dit à Jonas: "As-tu raison de te fâcher pour ce ricin?" Il répondit: "Oui, j'ai bien raison d'êtrefâché à mort."
10 Yahweh replied, 'You are concerned for the castor-oil plant which has not cost you any effort andwhich you did not grow, which came up in a night and has perished in a night.	10 Yahvé repartit: "Toi, tu as de la peine pour ce ricin, qui ne t'a coûté aucun travail et que tu n'as pasfait grandir, qui a poussé en une nuit et en une nuit à péri.
11 So why should I not be concerned for Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundredand twenty thousand people who cannot tel their right hand from their left, to say nothing of al the animals?'	11 Et moi, je ne serais pas en peine pour Ninive, la grande ville, où il y a plus de 120.000 êtres humainsqui ne distinguent pas leur droite de leur gauche, ainsi qu'une foule d'animaux!"
