Jonah 4

1 This made Jonah very indignant; he fell into a rage.	1 Jonas en fut très mécontent, il se mit même en colère.
2 He prayed to Yahweh and said, 'Please, Yahweh, isn't this what I said would happen when I was stil inmy own country? That was why I first tried to flee to Tarshish, since I knew you were a tender, compassionateGod, slow to anger, rich in faithful love, who relents about inflicting disaster.	2 Il fit sa prière à Yahvé: “Ah Yahvé, c’est bien ce que je disais quand j’étais encore dans mon pays, et c’est pour cela que je me suis empressé de fuir à Tarsis. Je te connaissais comme le Dieu qui pardonne et fait miséricorde, lent à la colère, riche en bonté et vite fatigué de punir.
3 So now, Yahweh, please take my life, for I might as wel be dead as go on living.'	3 Dans ces conditions prends ma vie, Yahvé, car la mort vaut mieux pour moi que la vie.”
4 Yahweh replied, 'Are you right to be angry?'	4 Yahvé lui répondit: “Crois-tu que tu aies raison de te mettre en colère?”
5 Jonah then left the city and sat down to the east of the city. There he made himself a shelter and satunder it in the shade, to see what would happen to the city.	5 Jonas sortit de la ville du côté de l’est, et là il s’installa; il se fit une cabane pour y rester à l’ombre et voir ce qui arriverait à la ville.
6 Yahweh God then ordained that a castor-oil plant should grow up over Jonah to give shade for his headand soothe his ill-humour; Jonah was delighted with the castor-oil plant.	6 Yahvé Dieu fit pousser un ricin pour lui faire de l’ombre sur la tête et calmer sa colère. Le ricin grandit au-dessus de Jonas qui en était tout heureux,
7 But at dawn the next day, God ordained that a worm should attack the castor-oil plant -- and it withered.	7 mais le lendemain, au petit matin, Dieu fit venir un ver qui piqua le ricin; il se dessécha.
8 Next, when the sun rose, God ordained that there should be a scorching east wind; the sun beat downso hard on Jonah's head that he was overcome and begged for death, saying, 'I might as wel be dead as go onliving.'	8 Puis au lever du soleil Dieu fit venir de l’est un vent brûlant. Le soleil tapait si fort sur la tête de Jonas, qu’il se trouva mal et souhaita la mort. Il dit: “La mort vaut mieux pour moi que la vie.”
9 God said to Jonah, 'Are you right to be angry about the castor-oil plant?' He replied, 'I have every rightto be angry, mortally angry!'	9 Mais Dieu lui dit: “As-tu raison de te mettre en colère pour ce ricin?” Il répondit: “Oui, j’ai bien raison d’être fâché à mort!”
10 Yahweh replied, 'You are concerned for the castor-oil plant which has not cost you any effort andwhich you did not grow, which came up in a night and has perished in a night.	10 Alors Yahvé lui dit: “Tu te mets bien en peine pour ce ricin qui ne t’a coûté aucun travail et que tu n’as pas fait grandir, qui a poussé en une nuit et qui était sec la nuit suivante.
11 So why should I not be concerned for Nineveh, the great city, in which there are more than a hundredand twenty thousand people who cannot tel their right hand from their left, to say nothing of al the animals?'	11 Et moi, je ne devrais pas me mettre en peine pour Ninive, la grande ville, où vivent plus de 120 000 personnes qui ne distinguent pas le bien et le mal, sans parler de tous les animaux?”
