NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 'I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living comfortably in my house, prosperously in my palace.	1 « Io Nabucodonosor vivevo tranquillo nella mia casa e glorioso nella mia reggia,
2 I had a dream; it appal ed me. Dread assailed me as I lay in bed; the visions that passed through myhead tormented me.	2 quando ebbi un sogno che mi spaventò, e i pensieri avuti nel mio letto e le visioni del mio capo mi turbarono.
3 So I decreed that all the sages of Babylon be summoned to explain to me what the dream meant.	3 Allora con mio decreto feci venire davanti a me tutti i sapienti di Babilonia, a darmi la spiegazione del mio sogno.
4 Magicians, soothsayers, Chaldaeans and exorcists came, and I told them what I had dreamt, but theycould not interpret it for me.	4 Venuti che furono gli indovini, i maghi, i Caldei e gli aruspici, esposi loro il mio sogno; ma essi non me ne dettero la spiegazione.
5 Daniel, renamed Belteshazzar after my own god, and in whom the spirit of the holy gods resides, thencame into my presence. I told him my dream:	5 Finalmente venne al mio cospetto il collega Daniele, chiamato Baltassar dal nome del mio Dio e che ha in sè lo Spirito degli dèi santi. Davanti a lui esposi il mio sogno:
6 ' "Belteshazzar, chief of magicians," I said, "I know that the spirit of the holy gods resides in you and that no mystery puts you at a loss. This is the dream I have had; tel me what it means.	6 O Baltassar, principe degli indovini, io so bene che lo spirito degli dèi santi abita in te, e che nessun arcano t'è impenetrabile: esponimi adunque le visioni da me avute nei miei sogni e il loro significato.
7 ' "The visions that passed through my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw a tree in the middle of theworld; it was very tal .	7 Ecco la visione che io ebbi in testa nel mio letto. Io stava a guardare: ed ecco nel mezzo della terra un albero di eccessiva grandezza;
8 The tree grew tal er and stronger, until its top reached the sky and it could be seen from the very endsof the earth.	8 un albero grande e robusto; la sua cima toccava il cielo e faccvasi vedere dagli estremi confini di tutto il mondo;
9 Its foliage was beautiful, its fruit abundant, in it was food for al . For the wild animals it provided shade,the birds of heaven nested in its branches, al living creatures found their food on it.	9 le sue foglie erano bellissime, i suoi frutti eran senza numero, e v'era da mangiare per tutti; sotto l'albero stavano animali e fiere; sopra i suoi rami nidificavano gli uccelli dell'aria: ogni vivente aveva da esso il suo cibo.
10 ' "I watched the visions passing through my head as I lay in bed: Next, a Watchful One, a holy one,came down from heaven.	10 Mentre io contemplavo nel mio letto questa visione del mio capo, ecco scendere dal cielo il Vigilante, il Santo,
11 At the top of his voice he shouted: Cut the tree down, lop off its branches, strip off its leaves, throwaway its fruit; let the animals flee from its shelter and the birds from its branches.	11 e dire, gridando ad alta voce: « Tagliate l'albero, recidetene i rami, scotetene le foglie, disperdetene i frutti, fuggan le bestie dalla sua ombra, e gli uccelli dai suoi rami.
12 But leave the stump with its roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze, in the grass ofthe countryside. Let it be drenched by the dew of heaven and have its lot with the animals, eating grass!	12 Però lasciate nella terra una punta delle sue radici. Sia legato con catene di ferro e di bronzo tra le erbe, all'aperto; sia bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo, e divida colle bestie l'erba dei campi.
13 Let it cease to have a human heart, and be given the heart of a beast, and seven times shal passover him!	13 Il suo cuore di uomo sia mutato in cuore di fiera e così passino sopra di lui sette tempi.
14 Such is the sentence proclaimed by the Watchers, the verdict announced by the holy ones- so thatevery living thing may learn that the Most High rules over human sovereignty; he confers it on whom he pleases,and raises the lowest of humankind.	14 Per sentenza dei vigilanti e secondo il consiglio e la petizione dei santi è così stabilito finché i viventi non riconoscano che l'Altissimo ha domìnio sopra il regno degli uomini, ch'Egli donerà a chi vuole, fino a porre sopra di esso l'uomo più abbietto ».
15 ' "This was the dream I had-I, Nebuchadnezzar the king. Now it is for you, Belteshazzar, to pronounceon its meaning, since not one of the sages in my kingdom has been able to interpret it for me; you, however, cando so, since the spirit of the holy gods resides in you." '	15 Questo vidi in sogno io, re Nabucodonosor. Or tu, Baltassar, dammene subito la spiegazione, chè tutti i sapienti del mio regno non possono darmela, ma tu puoi, perchè lo spirito degli dèi santi è in te ».
16 Daniel, known as Belteshazzar, was confused for a time and upset. The king said, 'Belteshazzar, donot be upset at the dream and its meaning.' Belteshazzar answered, 'My lord, may the dream apply to those whohate you, and its meaning to your foes!	16 Allora Daniele, chiamato Baltassar, stette sopra pensiero e in silenzio per quasi un'ora, turbato dai suoi pensieri. Ma il re prese a dire: « Baltassar, non ti dare pena del sogno e del suo significato ». Rispose Baltassar, dicendo: « Signor mio, questo sogno sia per quelli che ti voglion male, e la sua interpretazione per i tuoi nemici.
17 The tree you saw, so large and strong and tal that it reached the sky and could be seen throughoutthe world,	17 L'albero che tu hai veduto sublime e robusto, alto fino al cielo, e visibile per tutta la terra,
18 the tree with beautiful foliage and abundant fruit, with food for al in it, providing shade for the wildanimals, with the birds of heaven nesting in its branches:	18 dai bellissimi rami, dai frutti senza numero, in cui v'era da mangiare per tutti, sotto il quale stavano le bestie del campo, mentre sopra i suoi rami nidificavano gli uccelli dell'aria,
19 that tree is yourself, Your Majesty, for you have grown great and strong; your stature is now so greatthat it reaches the sky, and your empire extends to the ends of the earth.	19 sei tu, o re; tu sei divenuto grande e robusto, la tua grandezza è cresciuta, si è alzata fino al cielo, la tua potenza si è estesa fino alle ultime estremità della terra.
20 'And the Watchful One seen by the king, the holy one coming down from heaven and saying, "Cut thetree down and destroy it, but leave stump and roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze in thegrass of the countryside; let it be drenched by the dew and have its lot with the wild animals until seven timeshave passed over it":	20 Riguardo all'avere il re veduto il Vigilante, il Santo, scendere dal cielo e dire: Tagliate l'albero, fatelo in pezzi, ma lasciate in terra una punta di sue radici e sia legato con ferro e bronzo, stia all'aperto sull'erba, sia bagnato dalla rugiada del cièlo, pascoli colle fiere, finché non sian passati sopra di lui sette tempi,
21 the meaning of this, Your Majesty, the verdict of the Most High passed on my lord the king, is this:	21 eccone la spiegazione: è sentenza dell'Altissimo, pronunziata contro il re mio Signore:
22 You wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals, you will feed ongrass, as oxen do, you wil be drenched by the dew of heaven; seven times will pass over you until you havelearnt that the Most High rules over human sovereignty and confers it on whom he pleases.	22 ti cacceranno dalla società, e tu starai colle bestie e colle fiere, qual bue mangerai il fieno, sarai bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo, e così passeranno sopra di te sette tempi finché non riconosca che l'Altissimo ha dominio sopra il regno degli uomini e lo dà a chi gli pare.
23 'And the order, "Leave the stump and roots of the tree", means that your kingdom wil be kept for youuntil you come to understand that Heaven rules all.	23 Ma siccome fu dato l'ordine di lasciare una punta delle radici dell'albero, il tuo regno resterà a te, quando avrai riconosciuto che il potere è dal cielo.
24 May it please the king to accept my advice: by upright actions break with your sins, break with yourcrimes by showing mercy to the poor, and so live long and peacefully.'	24 Per questo, o re, accetta il mio consiglio: redimi colle elemosine i tuoi peccati, e le tue iniquità con opere di misericordia verso i poveri: può essere che Dio perdoni i tuoi delitti ».
25 This al happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.	25 Tutte queste cose avvennero al re Nabucodonosor.
26 At the end of twelve months, while strol ing on the roof of the royal palace in Babylon,	26 Dodici mesi dopo, mentre passeggiava per la reggia di Babilonia,
27 the king was saying, 'Great Babylon! Was it not built by me as a royal residence, by the force of mymight and for the majesty of my glory?'	27 il re prese a dire: « Non è questa la gran Babilonia da me edificata, come sede del mio regno, colla forza della mia potenza, collo splendore della mia gloria? »
28 The words were not out of his mouth when a voice came down from heaven: 'Of you, KingNebuchadnezzar, it is decreed: the empire has been taken from you,	28 Il re non aveva ancora finito di dire queste parole, quando una voce discese dal cielo: — Vien detto a te, o re Nabucodonosor: il tuo regno non sarà più tuo;
29 you wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals; you wil feed ongrass, as oxen do, and seven times wil pass over you until you have learnt that the Most High rules over humansovereignty and gives it to whom he pleases.'	29 Ti cacceranno dalla società, starai colle bestie e colle fiere, qual bue mangerai il fieno; cosi passeranno sopra di te sette tempi, finché tu non riconosca che l'Altissimo ha dominio sopra il regno degli uomini, e lo dà a chi gli pare.
30 The words were immediately fulfilled: Nebuchadnezzar was driven from human society and ate grassas oxen do; he was drenched by the dew of heaven; his hair grew like an eagle's feathers, and his nails becamelike a bird's talons.	30 Sull'istante le parole furon compite sopra Nabucodonosor: cacciato dalla società, mangiò fieno qual bue, il suo corpo fu bagnato dalla rugiada del cielo, tanto che i suoi capelli, crescendo, divennero come le penne dell'aquila, e le sue unghie come gli artigli degli uccelli.
31 'When the time was over, I, Nebuchad- nezzar, raised my eyes to heaven: my reason returned. And Iblessed the Most High, praising and glorifying him who lives for ever, for his empire is an everlasting empire, hiskingship endures, age after age.	31 « Ma finito quel tempo, io Nabucodonosor alzai i miei occhi al cielo, e mi ritornò la ragione. Allora benedissi l'Altissimo, e lodai e glorificai colui che vive in eterno: la sua potenza è eterna; il regno di lui si estende a tutte le generazioni.
32 Al who dwel on earth count for nothing; as he thinks fit, he disposes the army of heaven and thosewho dwel on earth. No one can arrest his hand or ask him, "What have you done?"	32 Tutti gli abitatori della terra son davanti a lui un niente. Egli dispone a suo beneplacito tanto delle potenze dei cieli, come degli abitatori della terra; e nessuno può resistere alla sua mano, e dirgli: — Perchè hai fatto questo? —
33 'At that moment my reason returned and, for the honour of my royal state, my glory and splendourreturned too. My counsel ors and noblemen acclaimed me; I was restored to my throne, and to my pastgreatness even more was added.	33 Nel medesimo tempo ritornò in me la mia ragione, ritornai nell'onore e nella magnificenza del regno, ritornai nel mio primo aspetto, i miei cortigiani e i miei magistrati mi ricercarono, fui rimesso nel mio regno, e la mia potenza fu ancor più accresciuta.
34 And now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, extol and glorify the King of heaven, al of whose deeds are true,al of whose ways are right, and who can humble those who walk in pride.'	34 Ed ora io, Nabucodonosor, lodo, esalto, glorifico il re del cielo, perchè le opere sue son rette, le sue vie son giuste, ed egli può umiliare i superbi ».
