NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 'I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living comfortably in my house, prosperously in my palace.	1 Moi, Nabukodonozor, j’étais tranquille dans ma maison et je vivais heureux dans mon palais,
2 I had a dream; it appal ed me. Dread assailed me as I lay in bed; the visions that passed through myhead tormented me.	2 lorsque j’ai fait un songe qui m’a effrayé; les pensées et les visions que j’ai eues durant la nuit m’ont épouvanté.
3 So I decreed that all the sages of Babylon be summoned to explain to me what the dream meant.	3 J’ai alors donné l’ordre de faire venir près de moi tous les sages de Babylone pour qu’ils me fassent connaître la signification du songe.
4 Magicians, soothsayers, Chaldaeans and exorcists came, and I told them what I had dreamt, but theycould not interpret it for me.	4 Les magiciens, les devins, les sorciers et les astrologues sont arrivés et je leur ai raconté le songe, mais ils ne m’en ont pas donné l’interprétation.
5 Daniel, renamed Belteshazzar after my own god, and in whom the spirit of the holy gods resides, thencame into my presence. I told him my dream:	5 Pour finir s’est présenté Daniel (nommé Baltsasar selon le nom de mon Dieu), qui a en lui l’esprit des dieux saints. Je lui ai donc raconté le songe et je lui ai dit:
6 ' "Belteshazzar, chief of magicians," I said, "I know that the spirit of the holy gods resides in you and that no mystery puts you at a loss. This is the dream I have had; tel me what it means.	6 “Baltsasar, chef des magiciens, je sais que l’esprit des dieux saints est en toi et qu’il n’y a pas de mystère pour toi. Voici donc le songe que j’ai eu, explique-le-moi.
7 ' "The visions that passed through my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw a tree in the middle of theworld; it was very tal .	7 “J’étais sur mon lit et j’ai eu cette vision: il y avait un arbre au centre de la terre, il était de très haute taille.
8 The tree grew tal er and stronger, until its top reached the sky and it could be seen from the very endsof the earth.	8 L’arbre grandit et devint si important que son sommet touchait le ciel; on l’apercevait depuis les extrémités de la terre.
9 Its foliage was beautiful, its fruit abundant, in it was food for al . For the wild animals it provided shade,the birds of heaven nested in its branches, al living creatures found their food on it.	9 Son feuillage était beau et ses fruits abondants. Il donnait à tous leur nourriture, les bêtes des champs s’abritaient à son ombre, les oiseaux du ciel nichaient dans ses branches; il donnait à tout être vivant sa nourriture.
10 ' "I watched the visions passing through my head as I lay in bed: Next, a Watchful One, a holy one,came down from heaven.	10 “Je contemplais cette vision dans mon lit quand un veilleur, un saint, descendit du ciel.
11 At the top of his voice he shouted: Cut the tree down, lop off its branches, strip off its leaves, throwaway its fruit; let the animals flee from its shelter and the birds from its branches.	11 Il se mit à crier d’une voix forte: Abattez l’arbre et coupez ses branches, arrachez ses feuilles et faites tomber ses fruits. Que les bêtes sauvages fuient son ombre, et les oiseaux du ciel, ses branches.
12 But leave the stump with its roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze, in the grass ofthe countryside. Let it be drenched by the dew of heaven and have its lot with the animals, eating grass!	12 Mais laissez en terre dans l’herbe des champs sa souche et ses racines liées de chaînes de fer et de bronze. Qu’il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel et qu’il partage l’herbe de la terre avec les bêtes sauvages.
13 Let it cease to have a human heart, and be given the heart of a beast, and seven times shal passover him!	13 Que son cœur d’homme lui soit enlevé et qu’on lui donne un cœur de bête, que sept ans passent sur lui!
14 Such is the sentence proclaimed by the Watchers, the verdict announced by the holy ones- so thatevery living thing may learn that the Most High rules over human sovereignty; he confers it on whom he pleases,and raises the lowest of humankind.	14 Tel est le jugement prononcé par les veilleurs, telle est la décision des saints; ainsi tout être vivant saura que le Très-Haut est maître des royautés humaines. Il élève s’il le veut le plus humble des hommes.
15 ' "This was the dream I had-I, Nebuchadnezzar the king. Now it is for you, Belteshazzar, to pronounceon its meaning, since not one of the sages in my kingdom has been able to interpret it for me; you, however, cando so, since the spirit of the holy gods resides in you." '	15 “Voilà le songe que j’ai eu, moi le roi Nabukodonozor; à toi Baltsasar de me l’expliquer, car tous les sages de mon royaume ont été incapables de le faire. Mais toi tu le peux car l’esprit des dieux saints est en toi.”
16 Daniel, known as Belteshazzar, was confused for a time and upset. The king said, 'Belteshazzar, donot be upset at the dream and its meaning.' Belteshazzar answered, 'My lord, may the dream apply to those whohate you, and its meaning to your foes!	16 Alors Daniel, appelé Baltsasar, resta sans parole pendant un moment; il était effrayé par ce qui lui venait à l’esprit. Le roi s’adressa à lui: “Baltsasar, n’aie pas peur de me dire la signification de ce songe!” Baltsasar prit donc la parole et dit: “Seigneur, que le songe soit pour ceux qui te haïssent et sa signification pour tes ennemis!
17 The tree you saw, so large and strong and tal that it reached the sky and could be seen throughoutthe world,	17 “Tu as vu un arbre qui grandissait et devenait si important que son sommet touchait les cieux et qu’on le voyait de toute la terre.
18 the tree with beautiful foliage and abundant fruit, with food for al in it, providing shade for the wildanimals, with the birds of heaven nesting in its branches:	18 Son feuillage était beau et son fruit abondant. À tous il procurait la nourriture, les bêtes sauvages reposaient à son ombre, et dans ses branches nichaient les oiseaux du ciel.
19 that tree is yourself, Your Majesty, for you have grown great and strong; your stature is now so greatthat it reaches the sky, and your empire extends to the ends of the earth.	19 Cet arbre, ô roi, c’est toi. Tu as grandi à tel point que ton pouvoir s’élève jusqu’aux cieux et ta puissance s’étend jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.
20 'And the Watchful One seen by the king, the holy one coming down from heaven and saying, "Cut thetree down and destroy it, but leave stump and roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze in thegrass of the countryside; let it be drenched by the dew and have its lot with the wild animals until seven timeshave passed over it":	20 Mais tu as vu, ô roi, un ange, un saint, qui descendait du ciel et disait: Coupez l’arbre, détruisez-le, mais laissez en terre la souche et les racines liées de chaînes de fer et de bronze dans l’herbe des champs, qu’il soit trempé de la rosée du ciel et qu’il ait sa part avec les bêtes des champs jusqu’à ce que sept ans aient passé sur lui.
21 the meaning of this, Your Majesty, the verdict of the Most High passed on my lord the king, is this:	21 “Voici ce que cela signifie, ô roi. C’est une décision du Très-Haut qui touche mon seigneur le roi.
22 You wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals, you will feed ongrass, as oxen do, you wil be drenched by the dew of heaven; seven times will pass over you until you havelearnt that the Most High rules over human sovereignty and confers it on whom he pleases.	22 On te chassera du milieu des hommes et tu habiteras avec les bêtes sauvages, tu te nourriras d’herbe comme le bœuf et tu seras mouillé de la rosée du ciel. Sept ans passeront sur toi jusqu’à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très-Haut est maître des royautés humaines et qu’il donne le pouvoir à qui il veut.
23 'And the order, "Leave the stump and roots of the tree", means that your kingdom wil be kept for youuntil you come to understand that Heaven rules all.	23 “On a dit de laisser la souche et les racines de l’arbre; de même ton royaume te sera rendu lorsque tu auras compris que les Cieux sont maîtres de tout.
24 May it please the king to accept my advice: by upright actions break with your sins, break with yourcrimes by showing mercy to the poor, and so live long and peacefully.'	24 C’est pourquoi, ô roi, écoute mon conseil. Rachète tes péchés en pratiquant la justice, et tes injustices en étant bon pour les malheureux; alors tout ira bien pour toi.”
25 This al happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.	25 Tout cela arriva au roi Nabukodonozor.
26 At the end of twelve months, while strol ing on the roof of the royal palace in Babylon,	26 Douze mois plus tard, alors qu’il se promenait sur la terrasse du palais royal de Babylone,
27 the king was saying, 'Great Babylon! Was it not built by me as a royal residence, by the force of mymight and for the majesty of my glory?'	27 le roi disait: “N’est-ce pas ici la grande Babylone que j’ai construite par ma puissance et ma force, dont j’ai fait ma résidence royale, et qui sera la gloire de mon règne?”
28 The words were not out of his mouth when a voice came down from heaven: 'Of you, KingNebuchadnezzar, it is decreed: the empire has been taken from you,	28 Cette parole était encore dans la bouche du roi, qu’une voix tomba du ciel: “C’est à toi que s’adresse cette parole, roi Nabukodonozor: La royauté s’est retirée de toi.
29 you wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals; you wil feed ongrass, as oxen do, and seven times wil pass over you until you have learnt that the Most High rules over humansovereignty and gives it to whom he pleases.'	29 On va te chasser du milieu des hommes, tu habiteras avec les bêtes sauvages, tu te nourriras d’herbe comme le bœuf, et sept ans passeront sur toi, jusqu’à ce que tu reconnaisses que le Très-Haut est maître des royautés humaines et qu’il donne le pouvoir à qui il veut.”
30 The words were immediately fulfilled: Nebuchadnezzar was driven from human society and ate grassas oxen do; he was drenched by the dew of heaven; his hair grew like an eagle's feathers, and his nails becamelike a bird's talons.	30 À l’instant même cette parole se réalisa. Nabukodonozor fut chassé du milieu des hommes; il mangeait de l’herbe comme le bœuf et son corps était trempé de la rosée du ciel, ses cheveux grandirent comme les plumes des aigles et ses ongles comme ceux des oiseaux.
31 'When the time was over, I, Nebuchad- nezzar, raised my eyes to heaven: my reason returned. And Iblessed the Most High, praising and glorifying him who lives for ever, for his empire is an everlasting empire, hiskingship endures, age after age.	31 À la fin du temps fixé, moi Nabukodonozor, j’ai levé mes yeux vers le ciel et mon intelligence m’est revenue. J’ai béni le Très-Haut, j’ai loué et glorifié celui qui vit éternellement. Sa puissance est une puissance éternelle et sa royauté s’étend de génération en génération.
32 Al who dwel on earth count for nothing; as he thinks fit, he disposes the army of heaven and thosewho dwel on earth. No one can arrest his hand or ask him, "What have you done?"	32 Pour lui, tous les habitants de la terre sont comme rien, il fait ce qu’il veut de l’armée des cieux et des habitants de la terre; nul ne peut s’opposer à sa puissance ou lui dire: Que fais-tu?
33 'At that moment my reason returned and, for the honour of my royal state, my glory and splendourreturned too. My counsel ors and noblemen acclaimed me; I was restored to my throne, and to my pastgreatness even more was added.	33 À ce moment même, l’intelligence est revenue en moi, j’ai retrouvé ma majesté et ma splendeur et j’ai pu renouer un règne glorieux. Mes conseillers et mes ministres m’ont recherché, j’ai été rétabli sur mon trône et j’ai même gagné en puissance.
34 And now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, extol and glorify the King of heaven, al of whose deeds are true,al of whose ways are right, and who can humble those who walk in pride.'	34 Maintenant moi, Nabukodonozor, je loue, je célèbre et je glorifie le Roi des cieux; tous ses chemins sont justes et ses œuvres sont vérité. Il sait abaisser ceux qui se conduisent avec orgueil.
