Daniel 4

NEW JERUSALEM	JERUSALEM
1 'I, Nebuchadnezzar, was living comfortably in my house, prosperously in my palace.	1 Moi, Nabuchodonosor, je me tenais sans souci dans ma maison, et florissant dans mon palais.
2 I had a dream; it appal ed me. Dread assailed me as I lay in bed; the visions that passed through myhead tormented me.	2 J'ai eu un songe: il m'a épouvanté; des angoisses, sur ma couche, et les visions de ma tête m'onttourmenté.
3 So I decreed that all the sages of Babylon be summoned to explain to me what the dream meant.	3 Je décrétai: qu'on m'amène tous les sages de Babylone pour qu'ils me fassent connaîtrel'interprétation du rêve.
4 Magicians, soothsayers, Chaldaeans and exorcists came, and I told them what I had dreamt, but theycould not interpret it for me.	4 Magiciens, devins, Chaldéens et exorcistes sont venus: je leur dis mon rêve, ils ne m'en donnèrentpas l'interprétation.
5 Daniel, renamed Belteshazzar after my own god, and in whom the spirit of the holy gods resides, thencame into my presence. I told him my dream:	5 Puis se présenta devant moi Daniel, surnommé Baltassar, selon le nom de mon dieu, et en qui résidel'esprit des dieux saints. Je lui dis mon songe:
6 ' "Belteshazzar, chief of magicians," I said, "I know that the spirit of the holy gods resides in you and that no mystery puts you at a loss. This is the dream I have had; tel me what it means.	6 "Baltassar, chef des magiciens, je sais qu'en toi réside l'esprit des dieux saints et qu'aucun secret net'embarrasse: voici le songe que j'ai eu; donne-m'en l'interprétation.
7 ' "The visions that passed through my head as I lay in bed were these: I saw a tree in the middle of theworld; it was very tal .	7 "Sur ma couche, j'ai contemplé les visions de ma tête: "Voici: un arbre au centre de la terre, trèsgrand de taille.
8 The tree grew tal er and stronger, until its top reached the sky and it could be seen from the very endsof the earth.	8 L'arbre grandit, devint puissant, sa hauteur atteignait le ciel, sa vue, les confins de toute la terre.
9 Its foliage was beautiful, its fruit abundant, in it was food for al . For the wild animals it provided shade,the birds of heaven nested in its branches, al living creatures found their food on it.	9 Son feuillage était beau, abondant son fruit; en lui chacun trouvait sa nourriture, il donnait l'ombreaux bêtes des champs, dans ses branches nichaient les oiseaux du ciel et toute chair se nourrissait de lui.
10 ' "I watched the visions passing through my head as I lay in bed: Next, a Watchful One, a holy one,came down from heaven.	10 Je contemplai les visions de ma tête, sur ma couche. Voici: un Vigilant, un saint descend du ciel.
11 At the top of his voice he shouted: Cut the tree down, lop off its branches, strip off its leaves, throwaway its fruit; let the animals flee from its shelter and the birds from its branches.	11 A pleine voix, il crie: Abattez l'arbre, brisez ses branches, arrachez son feuillage, jetez son fruit, queles bêtes fuient son abri et les oiseaux ses branches.
12 But leave the stump with its roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze, in the grass ofthe countryside. Let it be drenched by the dew of heaven and have its lot with the animals, eating grass!	12 Mais que restent en terre souche et racines dans des liens de fer et de bronze, dans l'herbe deschamps. Qu'il soit baigné de la rosée du ciel et que l'herbe de la terre soit sa part avec les bêtes des champs.
13 Let it cease to have a human heart, and be given the heart of a beast, and seven times shal passover him!	13 Son coeur se détournera des hommes, un coeur de bête lui sera donné et sept temps passeront surlui!
14 Such is the sentence proclaimed by the Watchers, the verdict announced by the holy ones- so thatevery living thing may learn that the Most High rules over human sovereignty; he confers it on whom he pleases,and raises the lowest of humankind.	14 C'est la sentence que prononcent les Vigilants, la question tranchée par les saints, afin que sachetout vivant que le Très-Haut a domaine sur le royaume des hommes: il le donne à qui lui plaît et élève le plus basd'entre les hommes!
15 ' "This was the dream I had-I, Nebuchadnezzar the king. Now it is for you, Belteshazzar, to pronounceon its meaning, since not one of the sages in my kingdom has been able to interpret it for me; you, however, cando so, since the spirit of the holy gods resides in you." '	15 Tel est le songe que j'ai eu, moi Nabuchodonosor, roi. Toi, Baltassar, donne-m'en l'interprétation,car aucun des sages de mon royaume n'a pu m'en faire connaître l'interprétation; mais toi tu le peux, puisque entoi réside l'esprit des dieux saints."
16 Daniel, known as Belteshazzar, was confused for a time and upset. The king said, 'Belteshazzar, donot be upset at the dream and its meaning.' Belteshazzar answered, 'My lord, may the dream apply to those whohate you, and its meaning to your foes!	16 Alors Daniel, surnommé Baltassar, fut un instant confondu et troublé dans ses pensées. Le roi dit:"Baltassar, ne sois pas troublé par ce songe et son interprétation." Baltassar répondit: "Monseigneur, ce songesoit pour ceux qui te haïssent, et son interprétation pour tes adversaires!
17 The tree you saw, so large and strong and tal that it reached the sky and could be seen throughoutthe world,	17 Cet arbre que tu as vu, grand et fort et élevé, atteignant au ciel et visible par toute la terre,
18 the tree with beautiful foliage and abundant fruit, with food for al in it, providing shade for the wildanimals, with the birds of heaven nesting in its branches:	18 au beau feuillage, au fruit abondant, portant nourriture pour tous, sous lequel demeurent les bêtesdes champs - et dans ses branches nichent les oiseaux du ciel --,
19 that tree is yourself, Your Majesty, for you have grown great and strong; your stature is now so greatthat it reaches the sky, and your empire extends to the ends of the earth.	19 c'est toi, ô roi, qui es devenu grand et puissant, et ta grandeur a augmenté et a atteint jusqu'au ciel, etton empire jusqu'aux confins de la terre.
20 'And the Watchful One seen by the king, the holy one coming down from heaven and saying, "Cut thetree down and destroy it, but leave stump and roots in the ground, bound with hoops of iron and bronze in thegrass of the countryside; let it be drenched by the dew and have its lot with the wild animals until seven timeshave passed over it":	20 "Quant à ce qu'a vu le roi: un Vigilant, un saint, descendu du ciel, qui disait: Abattez l'arbre,détruisez-le, mais la souche et ses racines, laissez-les en terre, dans des liens de fer et de bronze, dans l'herbe deschamps, et qu'il soit baigné de la rosée du ciel et que sa part soit avec les bêtes des champs jusqu'à ce que septtemps soient passés sur lui --
21 the meaning of this, Your Majesty, the verdict of the Most High passed on my lord the king, is this:	21 voici quelle en est l'interprétation, ô roi, et la décision du Très-Haut qui est venue sur mon Seigneurle roi:
22 You wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals, you will feed ongrass, as oxen do, you wil be drenched by the dew of heaven; seven times will pass over you until you havelearnt that the Most High rules over human sovereignty and confers it on whom he pleases.	22 "Tu seras chassé d'entre les hommes et avec les bêtes des champs sera ta demeure, tu te nourrirasd'herbe, comme les boeufs, tu seras baigné de la rosée du ciel, sept temps passeront sur toi, jusqu'à ce que tu aiesappris que le Très-Haut a domaine sur le royaume des hommes et qu'il le donne à qui lui plaît.
23 'And the order, "Leave the stump and roots of the tree", means that your kingdom wil be kept for youuntil you come to understand that Heaven rules all.	23 "Et cette parole: Laissez la souche et les racines de l'arbre, c'est que ton royaume sera préservé pourtoi jusqu'à ce que tu aies appris que les Cieux ont tout domaine.
24 May it please the king to accept my advice: by upright actions break with your sins, break with yourcrimes by showing mercy to the poor, and so live long and peacefully.'	24 C'est pourquoi, ô roi, agrée mon conseil: romps tes péchés par les oeuvres de justice, et tes iniquitésen faisant miséricorde aux pauvres, afin d'avoir longue sécurité."
25 This al happened to King Nebuchadnezzar.	25 Tout cela advint au roi Nabuchodonosor.
26 At the end of twelve months, while strol ing on the roof of the royal palace in Babylon,	26 Douze mois plus tard, se promenant sur la terrasse du palais royal de Babylone,
27 the king was saying, 'Great Babylon! Was it not built by me as a royal residence, by the force of mymight and for the majesty of my glory?'	27 le roi disait: "N'est-ce pas là cette grande Babylone que j'ai bâtie, pour en faire ma résidence royale,par la force de ma puissance et pour la majesté de ma gloire?"
28 The words were not out of his mouth when a voice came down from heaven: 'Of you, KingNebuchadnezzar, it is decreed: the empire has been taken from you,	28 Ces paroles étaient encore dans sa bouche, quand une voix tomba du ciel: "C'est à toi qu'il est parlé,ô roi Nabuchodonosor! la royauté s'est retirée de toi,
29 you wil be driven from human society and wil make your home with the wild animals; you wil feed ongrass, as oxen do, and seven times wil pass over you until you have learnt that the Most High rules over humansovereignty and gives it to whom he pleases.'	29 d'entre les hommes tu seras chassé, avec les bêtes des champs sera ta demeure, d'herbe, comme lesboeufs, tu te nourriras, et sept temps passeront sur toi, jusqu'à ce que tu aies appris que le Très-Haut a domainesur le royaume des hommes et qu'il le donne à qui lui plaît."
30 The words were immediately fulfilled: Nebuchadnezzar was driven from human society and ate grassas oxen do; he was drenched by the dew of heaven; his hair grew like an eagle's feathers, and his nails becamelike a bird's talons.	30 Et aussitôt, la parole s'accomplit en Nabuchodonosor: il fut chassé d'entre les hommes; comme lesboeufs, il mangea de l'herbe, son corps fut baigné de la rosée du ciel, et ses cheveux poussèrent comme desplumes d'aigle et ses ongles comme des griffes d'oiseau.
31 'When the time was over, I, Nebuchad- nezzar, raised my eyes to heaven: my reason returned. And Iblessed the Most High, praising and glorifying him who lives for ever, for his empire is an everlasting empire, hiskingship endures, age after age.	31 "Au temps fixé, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je levai les yeux vers le ciel: l'intelligence me revint; alorsje bénis le Très-Haut, louant et glorifiant Celui qui vit à jamais: son empire est un empire éternel, son royaume,pour toutes les générations.
32 Al who dwel on earth count for nothing; as he thinks fit, he disposes the army of heaven and thosewho dwel on earth. No one can arrest his hand or ask him, "What have you done?"	32 Tous les habitants de la terre, c'est comme s'ils ne comptaient pas, selon son bon plaisir, il agit avecl'armée du ciel et avec les habitants de la terre. Nul ne peut arrêter sa main ou lui dire: Qu'as-tu fait là?
33 'At that moment my reason returned and, for the honour of my royal state, my glory and splendourreturned too. My counsel ors and noblemen acclaimed me; I was restored to my throne, and to my pastgreatness even more was added.	33 A cet instant, l'intelligence me revint, et pour l'honneur de ma royauté me revinrent gloire etsplendeur; mes conseillers et mes grands me réclamèrent, je fus rétabli dans ma royauté, et ma grandeur futaccrue.
34 And now I, Nebuchadnezzar, praise, extol and glorify the King of heaven, al of whose deeds are true,al of whose ways are right, and who can humble those who walk in pride.'	34 A présent, moi, Nabuchodonosor, je loue, exalte et glorifie le Roi du Ciel, dont toutes les oeuvressont vérité, toutes les voies justice, et qui sait abaisser ceux qui marchent dans l'orgueil."
