NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
He took me to the gate, the one facing east.1 And he brought me to the gate that looked towards the east.
I saw the glory of the God of Israel approaching from the east. A sound came with him like the soundof the ocean, and the earth shone with his glory.2 And behold the glory of the God of Israel came in by the way of the east: and his voice was like the noise of many waters, and the earth shone with his majesty.
This vision was like the one I had seen when I had come for the destruction of the city, and like theone I had seen by the River Chebar. Then I fell to the ground.3 And I saw the vision according to the appearance which I had seen when he came to destroy the city: and the appearance was according to the vision which I had seen by the river Chobar: and I fell upon my face.
The glory of Yahweh arrived at the Temple by the east gate.4 And the majesty of the Lord went into the temple by the way of the gate that looked to the east.
The Spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court; I saw the glory of Yahweh fil the Temple.5 And the spirit lifted me up and brought me into the inner court: and behold the house was filled with the glory of the Lord.
And I heard someone speaking to me from the Temple while the man stood beside me.6 And I heard one speaking to me out of the house, and the man that stood by me,
He said, 'Son of man, this is the dais of my throne, the step on which I rest my feet. I shall live hereamong the Israelites for ever; and the House of Israel, they and their kings, will never again defile my holy namewith their whorings and the corpses of their kings,7 Said to me: Son of man, the place of my throne, and the place of the soles of my feet, where I dwell in the midst of the children of Israel for ever: and the house of Israel shall no more profane my holy name, they and their kings by their fornications, and by the carcasses of their kings, and by the high places.
by putting their threshold beside my threshold and their doorposts beside my door-posts, with a partywal shared by them and me. They used to defile my holy name by their loathsome practices, and this is why Iput an end to them in my anger.8 They who have set their threshold by my threshold, and their posts by my posts: and there was but a wall between me and them: and they profaned my holy name by the abominations which they committed: for which reason I consumed them in my wrath.
From now on they wil banish their whorings and the corpses of their kings from my presence and Ishall live among them for ever.
'Son of man, describe this Temple to the House of Israel, to shame them out of their loathsomepractices. (Let them draw up the plan of it.)10 Now therefore let them put away their fornications, and the carcasses of their kings far from me: and I will dwell in the midst of them for ever.
And, if they are ashamed of their behaviour, show them the design and plan of the Temple, its exitsand entrances, its shape, how al of it is arranged, the entire design and all its principles. Give them al this inwriting so that they can see and take note of its design and the way it is al arranged and carry it out.11 But thou, son of man, shew to the house of Israel the temple, and let them be ashamed of their iniquities, and let them measure the building:
This is the charter of the Temple: all the surrounding space on the mountain top is an especially holyarea. (Such is the charter of the Temple.)'12 And be ashamed of all that they have done. Shew them the form of the house, and of the fashion thereof, the goings out and the comings in, and the whole plan thereof, and all its ordinances, and all its order, and all its laws, and thou shalt write it in their sight: that they may keep the whole form thereof, and its ordinances, and do them.
These were the dimensions of the altar, in cubits each of a cubit plus a handsbreadth. The base: onecubit high and one cubit wide; the space by the runnel, al round the edge of the altar, one handsbreadth.13 This is the law of the house upon the top of the mountain: All its border round about is most holy: this then is the law of the house.
From the ground level of the base up to the lower plinth, two cubits high and one cubit wide; from thelesser plinth to the greater plinth, four cubits high and one cubit wide.14 And these are the measures of the altar by the truest cubit, which is a cubit and a handbreadth: the bottom thereof was a cubit, and the breadth a cubit: and the border thereof unto its edge, and round about, one handbreadth: and this was the trench of the altar.
The altar hearth: four cubits high, with four horns projecting from the hearth,15 And from the bottom of the ground to the lowest brim two cubits, and the breadth of one cubit: and from the lesser brim to the greater brim four cubits, and the breadth of one cubit.
the hearth was four-square: twelve cubits by twelve cubits;16 And the Ariel itself was four cubits: and from the Ariel upward were four horns.
and the square plinth: fourteen cubits by fourteen cubits; and the ledge al round: half a cubit; and thebase: one cubit al round. The steps were on the east side.17 And the Ariel was twelve cubits long, and twelve cubits broad, foursquare, with equal sides.
He said to me, 'Son of man, the Lord Yahweh says this, "As regards the altar, this is how things mustbe done when it has been built for the sacrifice of the burnt offering and for the pouring of blood.18 And the brim was fourteen cubits long, and fourteen cubits broad in the four corners thereof: and the crown round about it was half a cubit, and the bottom of it one cubit round about: and its steps turned toward the east.
To the levitical priests -- those of the race of Zadok -- who approach me to serve me -- declares theLord Yahweh -- you must give a young bul as a sacrifice for sin.19 And he said to me: Son of man, thus saith the Lord God: These are the ceremonies of the altar, in what day soever it shall be made: that holocausts may be offered upon it, and blood poured out.
You must take some of its blood and put it on the four horns, on the four corners of the plinth and onthe surrounding ledge. In this way you wil purify it and make expiation on it.20 And thou shalt give to the priests, and the Levites, that are of the race of Sadoc, who approach to me, saith the Lord God, to offer to me a calf of the herd for sin.
Then take the bul of the sacrifice for sin and burn it in that part of the Temple which is cut off fromthe sanctuary.21 And thou shalt take of his blood, and shalt put it upon the four horns thereof, and upon the four corners of the brim, and upon the crown round
On the second day, you must offer an unblemished he-goat as the sacrifice for sin, and the altar mustbe purified again as was done with the bul .22 And thou shalt take the calf, that is offered for sin: and thou shalt burn him in a separate place of the house without the sanctuary.
When you have finished the purification, you must offer a young, unblemished bull and anunblemished ram from the flock.23 And in the second day thou shalt offer a he goat without blemish for sin: and they shall expiate the altar, as they expiated it with the calf.
You must present them before Yahweh, and the priests wil sprinkle salt on them and offer them asburnt offerings to Yahweh.24 And when thou shalt have made an end of the expiation thereof, thou shalt offer a calf of the herd without blemish, and a ram of the flock without blemish.
As a sacrifice for sin, every day for seven days you must offer a he-goat, a bull and an unblemishedram from the flock.25 And thou shalt offer them in the sight of the Lord: and the priests shall put salt upon them, and shall offer them a holocaust to the Lord.
In this way the altar will be expiated and wil be purified and inaugurated.26 Seven days shalt thou offer a he goat for sill daily: they shall offer also a calf of the herd, and a ram of the flock without blemish.
At the end of that time, on the eighth day and afterwards, the priest wil offer your burnt offerings andyour communion sacrifices on the altar, and I shall look favourably on you -- declares the Lord Yahweh." '27 Seven days shall they expiate the altar, and shall cleanse it: and they shall consecrate it.
