NEW JERUSALEMVULGATA
Then, in vision I saw that above the solid surface over the heads of the winged creatures there wasabove them something like sapphire, which seemed to be like a throne.1 Et vidi : et ecce in firmamento quod erat super caput cherubim, quasi lapis sapphirus, quasi species similitudinis solii, apparuit super ea.
He then said to the man dressed in linen, 'Go in between the wheels below the winged creatures; takea handful of burning coal from between the winged creatures and scatter it over the city.' He went in as Iwatched.2 Et dixit ad virum qui indutus erat lineis, et ait : Ingredere in medio rotarum quæ sunt subtus cherubim, et imple manum tuam prunis ignis quæ sunt inter cherubim, et effunde super civitatem. Ingressusque est in conspectu meo.
The winged creatures were on the right of the Temple as the man went in, and the cloud fil ed theinner court.3 Cherubim autem stabant a dextris domus cum ingrederetur vir, et nubes implevit atrium interius.
The glory of Yahweh rose from above the winged creatures, towards the threshold of the Temple; theTemple was fil ed by the cloud and the court was full of the brightness of the glory of Yahweh.4 Et elevata est gloria Domini desuper cherub ad limen domus : et repleta est domus nube, et atrium repletum est splendore gloriæ Domini.
The noise of the winged creatures' wings could be heard even in the outer court, like the voice of GodAlmighty when he speaks.5 Et sonitus alarum cherubim audiebatur usque ad atrium exterius, quasi vox Dei omnipotentis loquentis.
When he had given the order to the man dressed in linen, 'Take the fire from between the wheels, between the winged creatures,' the man went in and stood by one of the wheels.6 Cumque præcepisset viro qui indutus erat lineis, dicens : Sume ignem de medio rotarum quæ sunt inter cherubim : ingressus ille stetit juxta rotam.
One of the winged creatures then reached his hand out towards the fire between the wingedcreatures, took some of it and put it into the hands of the man dressed in linen, who took it and came out again.7 Et extendit cherub manum de medio cherubim ad ignem qui erat inter cherubim, et sumpsit, et dedit in manus ejus qui indutus erat lineis : qui accipiens egressus est.
There appeared to be what looked like a human hand under the winged creatures' wings.8 Et apparuit in cherubim similitudo manus hominis subtus pennas eorum.
And I looked, and there were four wheels beside the winged creatures, one wheel beside each wingedcreature, and the appearance of the wheels was like the sparkle of chrysolite.9 Et vidi : et ecce quatuor rotæ juxta cherubim : rota una juxta cherub unum, et rota alia juxta cherub unum : species autem rotarum erat quasi visio lapidis chrysolithi :
In appearance, al four looked alike, as though each wheel had another wheel inside it.10 et aspectus earum similitudo una quatuor, quasi sit rota in medio rotæ.
In whichever of the four directions they moved, they did not need to turn as they moved, butwhichever way the head was facing there they fol owed; they did not turn as they moved,11 Cumque ambularent, in quatuor partes gradiebantur, et non revertebantur ambulantes : sed ad locum ad quem ire declinabat quæ prima erat, sequebantur et ceteræ, nec convertebantur.
and their entire bodies, their backs, their hands, their wings, as wel as the wheels, had eyes al theway round (the wheels of al four).12 Et omne corpus earum, et colla, et manus, et pennæ, et circuli, plena erant oculis in circuitu quatuor rotarum.
In my hearing, these wheels were called 'galgal'.13 Et rotas istas vocavit volubiles, audiente me.
Each had four faces; the first was a winged creature's face, the second a human face, the third alion's face and the fourth an eagle's face.14 Quatuor autem facies habebat unum : facies una, facies cherub, et facies secunda, facies hominis : et in tertio facies leonis, et in quarto facies aquilæ.
The winged creatures rose; this was the being I had seen by the River Chebar.15 Et elevata sunt cherubim : ipsum est animal quod videram juxta fluvium Chobar.
When the winged creatures moved, the wheels moved beside them; and when the winged creaturesraised their wings to leave the ground, the wheels did not turn beside them.16 Cumque ambularent cherubim, ibant pariter et rotæ juxta ea : et cum elevarent cherubim alas suas ut exaltarentur de terra, non residebant rotæ, sed et ipsæ juxta erant.
When the former halted the latter halted; when the former rose, the latter rose with them, since theyshared the same living spirit.17 Stantibus illis stabant, et cum elevatis elevabantur : spiritus enim vitæ erat in eis.
The glory of Yahweh then came out over the Temple threshold and paused over the wingedcreatures.18 Et egressa est gloria Domini a limine templi, et stetit super cherubim.
These raised their wings and rose from the ground as I watched, and the wheels were beside them. They paused at the entrance to the east gate of the Temple of Yahweh, with the glory of the God of Israel over them, above.19 Et elevantia cherubim alas suas, exaltata sunt a terra coram me : et illis egredientibus, rotæ quoque subsecutæ sunt : et stetit in introitu portæ domus Domini orientalis, et gloria Dei Israël erat super ea.
This was the winged creature I had seen beneath the God of Israel by the River Chebar; I knew thatthey were winged creatures.20 Ipsum est animal quod vidi subter Deum Israël juxta fluvium Chobar, et intellexi quia cherubim essent.
Each had four faces and four wings and what seemed to be human hands under their wings.21 Quatuor vultus uni, et quatuor alæ uni : et similitudo manus hominis sub alis eorum.
Their faces were like those I had seen by the River Chebar. Each one moved straight forward.22 Et similitudo vultuum eorum, ipsi vultus quos videram juxta fluvium Chobar, et intuitus eorum, et impetus singulorum ante faciem suam ingredi.
