1 How the gold has tarnished, how the fine gold has changed! The sacred stones lie scattered at thecorner of every street.	1 COME è oscurato l’oro, Ed ha mutato colore il buon oro fino, E sono le pietre del santuario state sparse In capo d’ogni strada!
2 The children of Zion, as precious as finest gold -- to think that they should now be reckoned likecrockery made by a potter!	2 Come i nobili figliuoli di Sion, Pregiati al pari dell’ottimo oro, Sono stati reputati quali vaselli di terra, Lavoro di man di vasellaio!
3 The very jackals give the breast, and suckle their young: but the daughter of my people is as cruel asthe ostriches of the desert.	3 Vi sono anche de’ gran pesci marini che porgon le poppe, E lattano i lor figli; Ma la figliuola del mio popolo è divenuta crudele, Come gli struzzi nel deserto.
4 The tongue of the baby at the breast sticks to its palate for thirst; little children ask for bread, no onegives them any.	4 La lingua del bambino di poppa Si è attaccata al suo palato, per la sete; I fanciulli hanno chiesto del pane, E non vi era alcuno che ne distribuisse loro.
5 Those who used to eat only the best, now lie dying in the streets; those who were reared in the purpleclaw at the rubbish heaps,	5 Quelli che mangiavano cibi delicati Son periti per le strade; Quelli ch’erano stati allevati sopra lo scarlatto Hanno abbracciato il letame.
6 for the wickedness of the daughter of my people exceeded the sins of Sodom, which was overthrown ina moment without a hand being laid on it.	6 E la pena dell’iniquità della figliuola del mio popolo è stata maggiore Che la pena del peccato di Sodoma, Che fu sovvertita come in un momento, Senza che la mano d’alcuno si levasse contro di lei.
7 Once her young people were brighter than snow, whiter than milk; rosier than coral their bodies, theirhue like sapphire.	7 I principi di essa erano più puri che neve, Più candidi che latte, Vermigli del corpo più che gemme, Puliti come zaffiri.
8 Now their faces are blacker than soot, they are not recognised in the streets, the skin has shrunk overtheir bones, as dry as a stick.	8 Il loro sguardo è divenuto fosco più che la nerezza stessa; Non si son riconosciuti per le piazze; La lor pelle si è attaccata alle loro ossa; È seccata, è divenuta come legno.
9 Happier those killed by the sword than those kil ed by famine: they waste away, sunken for lack of thefruits of the earth.	9 Più felici sono stati gli uccisi con la spada, Che quelli che son morti di fame; Perciocchè, essendo traffitti, il sangue loro è colato, E non hanno più avuto bisogno della rendita del campo.
10 With their own hands, kindly women cooked their children; this was their food when the daughter ofmy people was ruined.	10 Donne pietose, colle proprie mani, Hanno cotti i loro figliuoli: Quelli sono loro stati per cibo, Nella ruina della figliuola del mio popolo.
11 Yahweh indulged his fury, he vented his fierce anger, he lit a fire in Zion which devoured herfoundations.	11 Il Signore ha adempiuta la sua ira, Ha sparso l’ardor del suo cruccio, Ed ha acceso un fuoco in Sion, Che ha consumati i fondamenti di essa.
12 The kings of the earth never believed, nor did any of the inhabitants of the world, that foe or enemywould ever penetrate the gates of Jerusalem.	12 I re della terra, e tutti gli abitatori del mondo, Non avrebbero mai creduto Ch’entrasse nemico, nè avversario Dentro alle porte di Gerusalemme
13 Owing to the sins of her prophets and the crimes of her priests, who had shed the blood of the upright,in the heart of the city,	13 Quest’è avvenuto per i peccati de’ profeti di essa, Per l’iniquità de’ suoi sacerdoti, Che spandevano nel mezzo di essa Il sangue de’ giusti.
14 they wandered blindly through the streets, polluted with blood, so that no one dared to touch theirclothes.	14 I ciechi sono andati vagando per le strade, Si son contaminati di sangue, L’han toccato co’ lor vestimenti, Senza poterlo schivare.
15 'Keep away! Unclean!' people shouted, 'Keep away! Keep away! Don't touch!' If they left and fled tothe nations, they were not al owed to stay there either.	15 Ei si gridava loro: Traetevi addietro; ciò è immondo; Traetevi addietro, nol toccate; E pur se ne volavano via, e andavano errando. Ei si è detto fra le genti: Essi non potran più dimorare nel lor paese.
16 The face of Yahweh destroyed them, he wil look on them no more. There was no respect for thepriests, no deference for the elders.	16 La faccia del Signore li ha dispersi; Egli non continuerà più a riguardarli; Non hanno avuto alcun rispetto a’ sacerdoti, Nè pietà de’ vecchi.
17 Continual y we were wearing out our eyes, watching for help -- in vain. From our towers we watchedfor a nation which could not save us anyway.	17 Mentre siamo durati, i nostri occhi si son consumati Dietro al nostro soccorso, che non è stato altro che vanità; Noi abbiam riguardato nella nostra vedetta Ad una gente che non potea salvare.
18 Men dogged our steps, to keep us out of our streets. Our end was near, our days were done, our endhad come.	18 Ci hanno cacciati, seguendo i nostri passi, Sì che non siam potuti andar per le nostre campagne; Il nostro fine si è avvicinato, i nostri dì son compiuti; Perciocchè il nostro fine è venuto.
19 Our pursuers were swifter than eagles in the sky; they hounded our steps through the mountains, theylay in ambush for us in the wilds.	19 Quelli che ci hanno perseguiti Sono stati più leggieri che le aquile del cielo; Ci son corsi dietro in su i monti, Ci han posti agguati nel deserto.
20 The breath of our nostrils, Yahweh's anointed, was caught in their traps, he of whom we said, 'In hisshadow we shall live among the nations.'	20 Il respiro delle nostre nari, L’Unto del Signore, di cui noi dicevamo: Noi viveremo alla sua ombra fra le genti, È stato preso nelle lor trappole
21 Rejoice, exult, daughter of Edom, you who reside in Uz! To you in turn the cup wil pass; you wil getdrunk and strip yourself naked!	21 Gioisci pure, e rallegrati, figliuola di Edom; Tu che abiti nel paese di Us, Sopra te ancora passerà la coppa; Tu ne sarai inebbriata, e ti scoprirai.
22 Your wickedness is atoned for, daughter of Zion, he will never banish you again. But your wickedness,daughter of Edom, wil he punish, your sins he will lay bare!	22 La pena della tua iniquità è finita, figliuola di Sion; Egli non ti farà più menare in cattività; Egli farà punizione della tua iniquità, figliuola di Edom; Egli scoprirà i tuoi peccati
