Yahweh said to Moses: 'Speak to the priests descended from Aaron and say: "None of them mustmake himself unclean by touching the corpse of one of his people,1 The Lord also said to Moses: Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and you shall say to them: Do not allow a priest to be contaminated by the death of his citizens,
unless it be of one of his closest relations-father, mother, son, daughter, brother,2 except only by his blood-relatives and near-relatives, that is, by a father or mother, or by a son or daughter, or also a brother,
or virgin sister, since she being unmarried is still his close relation: he can make himself unclean forher;3 or a virgin sister, who is not married to a husband.
but for a close female relation who is married he wil not make himself unclean; he would profanehimself.4 But not even by the leader of his people shall he be contaminated.
"They wil not make tonsures on their heads, shave the edges of their beards, or gash their bodies.5 Neither shall they shave their head or their beard, and they shall not make incisions in their flesh.
They wil be consecrated to their God and wil not profane the name of their God. For their function isto offer the food burnt for Yahweh, the food of their God, and so they must be holy.6 They shall be holy to their God, and they shall not pollute his name. For they offer the incense of the Lord and the bread of their God, and because of this they shall be holy.
"They wil not marry a woman profaned by prostitution, or one divorced by her husband, for the priestis consecrated to his God.7 They shall not take as a wife a promiscuous woman, or a prostitute, or her who has been repudiated by her husband. For they are consecrated to their God,
"You wil treat him as holy, for he offers the food of your God. For you, he wil be a holy person, for I,Yahweh, who sanctify you, am holy.8 and they offer the bread of the presence. Therefore, let them be holy, for I also am holy: the Lord, who sanctifies them.
"If a priest's daughter profanes herself by prostitution, she profanes her father and wil be burnt alive.9 If the daughter of a priest will have been taken into prostitution, and will have violated the name of her father, she shall be consumed by fire.
"The priest who is pre-eminent over his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured, and who, robed in the sacred vestments, has received investiture, wil not disorder his hair or tear his clothes;10 The high priest, that is, the priest who is the greatest among his brothers, upon whose head the oil of anointing has been poured, and whose hands have been consecrated for the priesthood, and who has been vested with the holy vestments: he shall not expose his head; he shall not rend his vestments.
he wil not go near any corpse or make himself unclean even for his father or mother.11 And he shall not enter to any dead body whatsoever; likewise, not even by his father or mother shall he be contaminated.
He wil not leave the holy place in such a way as to profane the sanctuary of his God; for he bears theconsecration of the anointing oil of his God. I am Yahweh.12 Neither shall he exit from the holy places, lest he pollute the Sanctuary of the Lord. For the oil of the holy anointing of his God is upon him. I am the Lord.
"He will marry a woman who is stil a virgin.13 He shall take a virgin as his wife.
He wil not marry a woman who has been widowed or divorced or profaned by prostitution, but wilmarry a virgin from his own people:14 But a widow, or one who has been repudiated or defiled, or also a mistress, he shall not accept, but only a maiden from among his own people.
he must not make his own children profane, for I, Yahweh, have sanctified him." '15 He shall not mingle the stock of his family with the common people of his nation. For I am the Lord, who sanctifies him.
Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
'Speak to Aaron and say: "None of your descendants, for al time, may come forward to offer the foodof his God if he has any infirmity,17 Say to Aaron: A man from your offspring, throughout their families, who has a blemish, shall not offer the bread to his God.
for none may come forward if he has an infirmity, be he blind or lame, disfigured or deformed,18 Neither shall he approach to minister to him: if he is blind, if he is lame, if he is small, or large, or has a crooked nose,
or with an injured foot or arm,19 if his foot or hand is broken,
a hunchback, someone with rickets or ophthalmia or the scab or running sores, or a eunuch.20 if he has a bulging back or bleary eyes, or if he has a white spot in his eye, or a chronic scab, or a skin disease on his body, or a hernia.
No descendant of the priest Aaron may come forward to offer the food burnt for Yahweh if he has anyinfirmity; if he has an infirmity, he wil not come forward to offer the food of his God.21 Anyone from the offspring of Aaron, the priest, who has a blemish, shall not approach to offer sacrifices to the Lord, nor the bread to his God.
"He may eat the food of his God, things especially holy and things holy,22 Nevertheless, he shall eat from the loaves which are offered in the Sanctuary.
but he wil not go near the curtain or approach the altar, since he has an infirmity and must notprofane my holy things; for I, Yahweh, have sanctified them." '23 But even so, he may not enter within the veil, nor approach to the altar. For he has a blemish, and he must not contaminate my Sanctuary. I am the Lord, who sanctifies them.
And Moses promulgated this to Aaron, to his sons, and to all the Israelites.24 Therefore, Moses spoke to Aaron, and to his sons, and to all of Israel, everything that had been commanded to him.
