NEW JERUSALEMDOUAI-RHEIMS
Yahweh said to Moses: 'Speak to the priests descended from Aaron and say: "None of them mustmake himself unclean by touching the corpse of one of his people,1 The Lord said also to Moses: Speak to the priests the sons of Aaron, and thou shalt say to them: Let not a priest incur an uncleanness at the death of his citizens:
unless it be of one of his closest relations-father, mother, son, daughter, brother,2 But only for his kin, such as are near in blood, that is to say, for his father and for his mother, and for his son, and for his daughter, for his brother also,
or virgin sister, since she being unmarried is still his close relation: he can make himself unclean forher;3 And for a maiden sister, who hath had no husband:
but for a close female relation who is married he wil not make himself unclean; he would profanehimself.4 But not even for the prince of his people shall he do any thing that may make him unclean.
"They wil not make tonsures on their heads, shave the edges of their beards, or gash their bodies.5 Neither shall they shave their head, nor their beard, nor make incisions in their flesh.
They wil be consecrated to their God and wil not profane the name of their God. For their function isto offer the food burnt for Yahweh, the food of their God, and so they must be holy.6 They shall be holy to their God, and shall not profane his name: for they offer the burnt offering of the Lord, and the bread of their God, and therefore they shall be holy.
"They wil not marry a woman profaned by prostitution, or one divorced by her husband, for the priestis consecrated to his God.7 They shall not take to wife a harlot or a vile prostitute, nor one that has been put away from her husband: because they are consecrated to their God,
"You wil treat him as holy, for he offers the food of your God. For you, he wil be a holy person, for I,Yahweh, who sanctify you, am holy.8 And offer the leaves of proposition. Let them therefore be holy, because I also am holy, the Lord, who sanctify them.
"If a priest's daughter profanes herself by prostitution, she profanes her father and wil be burnt alive.9 If the daughter of a priest be taken in whoredom, and dishonour the name of her father, she shall be burnt with fire.
"The priest who is pre-eminent over his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured, and who, robed in the sacred vestments, has received investiture, wil not disorder his hair or tear his clothes;10 The high priest, that is to say, the priest, is the greatest among his brethren. upon whose head the oil of unction hath been poured, and whose hands have been consecrated for the priesthood, and who hath been vested with the holy vestments, shall not uncover his head, he shall not rend his garments:
he wil not go near any corpse or make himself unclean even for his father or mother.11 Nor shall he go in at all to any dead person: not even for his father, or his mother, shall he be defiled:
He wil not leave the holy place in such a way as to profane the sanctuary of his God; for he bears theconsecration of the anointing oil of his God. I am Yahweh.12 Neither shall he go out of the holy places, lest he defile the sanctuary of the Lord, because the oil of the holy unction of his God is upon him. I am the Lord.
"He will marry a woman who is stil a virgin.13 He shall take a virgin unto his wife:
He wil not marry a woman who has been widowed or divorced or profaned by prostitution, but wilmarry a virgin from his own people:14 But a widow or one that is divorced, or defiled, or a harlot, he shall not take, but a maid of his own people :
he must not make his own children profane, for I, Yahweh, have sanctified him." '15 He shall not mingle the stock of his kindred with the common people of his nation: for I am the Lord who sanctify him.
Yahweh spoke to Moses and said:16 And the Lord spoke to Moses, saying:
'Speak to Aaron and say: "None of your descendants, for al time, may come forward to offer the foodof his God if he has any infirmity,17 Say to Aaron: Whosoever of thy seed throughout their families, hath a blemish, he shall not offer bread to his God.
for none may come forward if he has an infirmity, be he blind or lame, disfigured or deformed,18 Neither shall he approach to minister to him: If he be blind, if he be lame, if he have a little, or a great, or a crooked nose,
or with an injured foot or arm,19 If his foot, or if his hand be broken,
a hunchback, someone with rickets or ophthalmia or the scab or running sores, or a eunuch.20 If he be crookbacked, or blear eyed, or have a pearl in his eye, or a continual scab, or a dry scurf in his body, or a rupture:
No descendant of the priest Aaron may come forward to offer the food burnt for Yahweh if he has anyinfirmity; if he has an infirmity, he wil not come forward to offer the food of his God.21 Whosoever of the seed of Aaron the priest hath a blemish, he shall not approach to offer sacrifices to the Lord, nor bread to his God.
"He may eat the food of his God, things especially holy and things holy,22 He shall eat nevertheless of the loaves, that are offered in the sanctuary,
but he wil not go near the curtain or approach the altar, since he has an infirmity and must notprofane my holy things; for I, Yahweh, have sanctified them." '23 Yet so that he enter not within the veil, nor approach to the altar, because he hath a blemish, and he must not defile my sanctuary. I am the Lord who sanctify them.
And Moses promulgated this to Aaron, to his sons, and to all the Israelites.24 Moses therefore spoke to Aaron, and to his sons and to all Israel, all the things that had been commanded him.
