Sirach 8

1 Do not try conclusions with anyone influential, in case you later fal into his clutches.	1 Non ti mettere a litigare con un uomo potente, perché non ti avvenga di cadere nelle sue mani.
2 Do not quarrel with anyone rich, in case he puts his weight against you; for gold has destroyed many,and has swayed the hearts of kings.	2 Non disputare con uom facoltoso, affinchè non avvenga, che egli intenti lite contro di te;
3 Do not argue with anyone argumentative, do not pile wood on that fire.	3 Perocché molti ne ha rovinati l'oro, e l'argento, il quale è giunto a pervertire anche i regi.
4 Do not joke with anyone uncouth, for fear of hearing your ancestors insulted.	4 Non contendere con uom linguacciuto, e non metter legna sul fuoco di lui.
5 Do not revile a repentant sinner; remember that we al are guilty.	5 Non aver che fare con uomo indisciplinato, affinchè egli non parli male della tua stirpe.
6 Do not despise anyone in old age; after all, some of us too are growing old.	6 Non disprezzare colui, che si è ritirato dal peccato, e non gliela rinfacciare; ricorditi, che noi siam tutti degni di gastigo.
7 Do not gloat over anyone's death; remember that we al have to die.	7 Non perdere il rispetto ad un uomo nella sua vecchiezza; perché sono de' nostri quelli, che invecchiano.
8 Do not scorn the discourse of the wise, but make yourself familiar with their maxims, since from theseyou wil learn the theory and the art of serving the great.	8 Non far festa della morte del tuo nemico, sapendo, che tutti noi abbiam da morire, e non vogliamo, che altri ne fida.
9 Do not dismiss what the old people have to say, for they too were taught by their parents; from them youwil learn how to think, and the art of the timely answer.	9 Non disprezzare i racconti de' vecchi saggi, ed abbi familiari le loro massime;
10 Do not kindle the coals of the sinner, in case you scorch yourself in his blaze.	10 Perocché da loro tu apparerai la sapienza, e gli insegnamenti della prudenza, e a servire ai grandi senza riprensione.
11 Refuse to be provoked by the insolent, for fear that such a one try to trap you in your words.	11 Non disprezzare i racconti de' vecchj, perché essi gli appresero da' padri loro;
12 Do not lend to anyone who is stronger than you are -- if you do lend, resign yourself to loss.	12 E da loro imparerai la prudenza, e a rispondere quando fa di mestieri.
13 Do not stand surety beyond your means; if you do stand surety, be prepared to pay up.	13 Non dar fuoco ai carboni de' peccatori con far loro de' rimproveri, altrimenti ti abbrucerai alla fiamma del fuoco di essi.
14 Do not go to law with a judge, since judgement wil be given in his favour.	14 Non istare a tu per tu con uomo maledico, perché egli non istia come in agguato a rilevare ogni tua parola.
15 Do not go travel ing with a rash man, for fear he becomes burdensome to you; he wil act as the whimtakes him, and you wil both be ruined by his fol y.	15 Non dare in prestito a chi ne può più di te: che se gli hai imprestato qualche cosa, fa conto d'averla perduta.
16 Do not argue with a quick-tempered man, do not go with him where there are no other people, sinceblood counts for nothing in his eyes, and where no help is to be had, he wil strike you down.	16 Non far mallevadoria sopra le tue forze, ma se l'hai fatta, pensa come tu abbi a pagare.
17 Do not ask a fool for advice, since a fool wil not be able to keep a confidence.	17 Non giudicare contro al giudice, perché egli giudica secondo la giustizia.
18 In a stranger's presence do nothing that should be kept secret, since you cannot tel what use thestranger will make of it.	18 Non ti accompagnare per viaggio con uomo temerario, affinchè egli non incarichi sopra di te i suoi guai; perocché egli va secondando i suoi capricci, e tu per la stoltezza di lui perirai.
19 Do not open your heart to al comers, nor lay claim to their good offices.	19 Non venire a contesa con uomo iracondo, e non camminare pel deserto con un temerario; perché è cosa come da nulla per lui il sangue, e dove non sia chi l'aiuti, egli ti schiaccerà.
	20 Non prender consiglio dagli stolti; perocché questi non possono amare, se non quello che ad essi piace.
	21 Non consultare in presenza d'uno straniero, perché tu non sai quel, che egli abbia in corpo.
	22 Non isvelare ad ogn' uomo il cuor tuo, affinchè mal non ti corrisponda, e dica male di te.
