Sirach 8

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 Do not try conclusions with anyone influential, in case you later fal into his clutches.	1 N’aie pas de discussion avec un homme puissant: tu pourrais tomber entre ses mains.
2 Do not quarrel with anyone rich, in case he puts his weight against you; for gold has destroyed many,and has swayed the hearts of kings.	2 Ne te querelle pas avec un homme riche: il pourrait jeter son poids dans la balance.
3 Do not argue with anyone argumentative, do not pile wood on that fire.	3 Ne discute pas avec un bavard: ce serait jeter du bois sur son feu.
4 Do not joke with anyone uncouth, for fear of hearing your ancestors insulted.	4 Ne plaisante pas avec quelqu’un de grossier: il en viendrait à insulter tes ancêtres.
5 Do not revile a repentant sinner; remember that we al are guilty.	5 Ne fais pas de reproches au pécheur repentant; souviens-toi que nous sommes tous coupables.
6 Do not despise anyone in old age; after all, some of us too are growing old.	6 Ne méprise pas un homme dans sa vieillesse: nous-mêmes serons vieux un jour.
7 Do not gloat over anyone's death; remember that we al have to die.	7 Ne te réjouis de la mort de personne: souviens-toi que tous nous mourrons.
8 Do not scorn the discourse of the wise, but make yourself familiar with their maxims, since from theseyou wil learn the theory and the art of serving the great.	8 Ne dédaigne pas les propos des sages, reviens souvent à leurs préceptes: tu apprendras d’eux comment vivre et comment servir les grands.
9 Do not dismiss what the old people have to say, for they too were taught by their parents; from them youwil learn how to think, and the art of the timely answer.	9 Ne te débarrasse pas de la doctrine des anciens, car eux-mêmes l’ont apprise de leurs pères; ils ouvriront ton intelligence et te rendront capable de répondre à propos.
10 Do not kindle the coals of the sinner, in case you scorch yourself in his blaze.	10 Ne fais rien pour exciter le pécheur: tu pourrais te brûler à sa flamme.
11 Refuse to be provoked by the insolent, for fear that such a one try to trap you in your words.	11 N’énerve pas un homme de mauvais caractère: il fausserait tes paroles et en tirerait un prétexte.
12 Do not lend to anyone who is stronger than you are -- if you do lend, resign yourself to loss.	12 Ne prête pas à plus puissant que toi: si tu lui as prêté, tiens-le pour perdu.
13 Do not stand surety beyond your means; if you do stand surety, be prepared to pay up.	13 Ne te porte pas caution pour autrui au-delà de tes moyens; si tu l’as fait, prépare-toi à payer.
14 Do not go to law with a judge, since judgement wil be given in his favour.	14 N’aie pas de procès avec un juge: vu sa position, on jugera en sa faveur.
15 Do not go travel ing with a rash man, for fear he becomes burdensome to you; he wil act as the whimtakes him, and you wil both be ruined by his fol y.	15 Ne te mets pas en route avec un homme téméraire, de peur qu’il ne te force la main. Comme il n’en fera qu’à sa tête, ses folies vous feront périr tous les deux.
16 Do not argue with a quick-tempered man, do not go with him where there are no other people, sinceblood counts for nothing in his eyes, and where no help is to be had, he wil strike you down.	16 Ne te querelle pas avec un homme qui s’emporte, ne reste pas avec lui dans un lieu isolé. Car il n’aura pas de scrupule à verser le sang et, loin de tout secours, il se jettera peut-être sur toi.
17 Do not ask a fool for advice, since a fool wil not be able to keep a confidence.	17 Ne prends pas ta décision en présence d’un sot: il ne gardera pas le secret.
18 In a stranger's presence do nothing that should be kept secret, since you cannot tel what use thestranger will make of it.	18 Ne fais pas ce qui doit rester secret en présence d’un inconnu: tu ne sais pas comment il réagira.
19 Do not open your heart to al comers, nor lay claim to their good offices.	19 N’ouvre pas ton cœur à n’importe qui: ne compte pas qu’on t’en saura gré.
