Sirach 8

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 Do not try conclusions with anyone influential, in case you later fal into his clutches.	1 Non contendere con un uomo potente, per non cadere nelle sue mani.
2 Do not quarrel with anyone rich, in case he puts his weight against you; for gold has destroyed many,and has swayed the hearts of kings.	2 Non litigare con un uomo ricco, perché non ti soverchi con il suo peso: l’oro infatti ha corrotto molti e ha fatto deviare il cuore dei re.
3 Do not argue with anyone argumentative, do not pile wood on that fire.	3 Non contendere con un uomo chiacchierone e non aggiungere legna al suo fuoco.
4 Do not joke with anyone uncouth, for fear of hearing your ancestors insulted.	4 Non scherzare con l’uomo ignorante, perché non siano insultati i tuoi antenati.
5 Do not revile a repentant sinner; remember that we al are guilty.	5 Non rimproverare un uomo che si converte dal peccato: ricòrdati che tutti abbiamo delle colpe.
6 Do not despise anyone in old age; after all, some of us too are growing old.	6 Non disprezzare un uomo quando è vecchio, perché anche tra noi alcuni invecchieranno.
7 Do not gloat over anyone's death; remember that we al have to die.	7 Non gioire per la morte di qualcuno: ricòrdati che tutti moriremo.
8 Do not scorn the discourse of the wise, but make yourself familiar with their maxims, since from theseyou wil learn the theory and the art of serving the great.	8 Non disdegnare i discorsi dei saggi, medita piuttosto le loro massime, perché da loro imparerai la dottrina e potrai metterti a servizio dei grandi.
9 Do not dismiss what the old people have to say, for they too were taught by their parents; from them youwil learn how to think, and the art of the timely answer.	9 Non trascurare i discorsi dei vecchi, perché anch’essi hanno imparato dai loro padri; da loro imparerai il discernimento e come rispondere nel momento del bisogno.
10 Do not kindle the coals of the sinner, in case you scorch yourself in his blaze.	10 Non attizzare le braci del peccatore, per non bruciare nel fuoco della sua fiamma.
11 Refuse to be provoked by the insolent, for fear that such a one try to trap you in your words.	11 Non recedere dalla presenza del violento, perché egli non tenda un agguato contro di te.
12 Do not lend to anyone who is stronger than you are -- if you do lend, resign yourself to loss.	12 Non fare prestiti a un uomo più forte di te e se gli hai prestato qualcosa, considerala perduta.
13 Do not stand surety beyond your means; if you do stand surety, be prepared to pay up.	13 Non garantire oltre le tue possibilità e se hai garantito, preòccupati di soddisfare.
14 Do not go to law with a judge, since judgement wil be given in his favour.	14 Non muovere causa a un giudice, perché lo giudicheranno tenendo conto del suo prestigio.
15 Do not go travel ing with a rash man, for fear he becomes burdensome to you; he wil act as the whimtakes him, and you wil both be ruined by his fol y.	15 Con un temerario non metterti in viaggio, perché non ti sia di peso; egli camminerà infatti secondo il suo capriccio e con lui andrai in rovina per la sua stoltezza.
16 Do not argue with a quick-tempered man, do not go with him where there are no other people, sinceblood counts for nothing in his eyes, and where no help is to be had, he wil strike you down.	16 Non litigare con un uomo irascibile e non passare con lui per un luogo solitario, perché ai suoi occhi il sangue è come un nulla, dove non c’è possibilità di aiuto ti assalirà.
17 Do not ask a fool for advice, since a fool wil not be able to keep a confidence.	17 Non consigliarti con un uomo stolto, perché non saprà mantenere il segreto.
18 In a stranger's presence do nothing that should be kept secret, since you cannot tel what use thestranger will make of it.	18 Davanti a uno straniero non fare nulla di nascosto, perché non sai che cosa ne seguirà.
19 Do not open your heart to al comers, nor lay claim to their good offices.	19 A un uomo qualsiasi non aprire il tuo cuore, perché potrebbe non esserti riconoscente.
