1 But the souls of the upright are in the hands of God, and no torment can touch them.	1 Le anime dei giusti sono in ma­no di Dio, e il tormento della mor­te non li potrà toccare;
2 To the unenlightened, they appeared to die, their departure was regarded as disaster,	2 agli oc­chi degli stolti parve che essi morissero e la loro partenza fu sti­mata una sciagura
3 their leaving us like annihilation; but they are at peace.	3 e la loro separazione da noi una distruzione; ma essi sono nella pace,
4 If, as it seemed to us, they suffered punishment, their hope was rich with immortality;	4 e se nel cospetto degli uomini han soffer­to dei tormenti, la loro speranza è piena d'immortalità.
5 slight was their correction, great wil their blessings be. God was putting them to the test and has provedthem worthy to be with him;	5 Dopo breve afflizione, saran messi a parte di grandi beni, perchè Dio li ha provati e li ha trovati de­gni di sè.
6 he has tested them like gold in a furnace, and accepted them as a perfect burnt offering.	6 Li ha provati come oro nel crogiolo, li ha graditi come vittime d'olocausto, e a suo tempo saran consolati.
7 At their time of visitation, they wil shine out; as sparks run through the stubble, so will they.	7 I giusti bril­leranno, correranno qua e là co­me scintille in un canneto,
8 They wil judge nations, rule over peoples, and the Lord wil be their king for ever.	8 giudicheranno le nazioni, domineran­no i popoli, e il Signore regnerà in essi eternamente.
9 Those who trust in him wil understand the truth, those who are faithful wil live with him in love; forgrace and mercy await his holy ones, and he intervenes on behalf of his chosen.	9 Quelli che confidano nel Signore compren­deranno la verità; i fedeli vivran­no uniti a lui nell'amore, perchè grazia e pace è riserbata agli elet­ti di Dio.
10 But the godless wil be duly punished for their reasoning, for having neglected the upright and desertedthe Lord.	10 Ma gli empi avranno il casti­go secondo i loro pensieri, perchè disprezzarono il giusto e si allon­tanarono dal Signore;
11 Yes, wretched are they who scorn wisdom and discipline: their hope is void, their toil unavailing, theirachievements unprofitable;	11 perchè chi rigetta la sapienza e la disci­plina è infelice: le loro speranze sono vane, le loro fatiche son sen­za frutto, le loro opere sono inu­tili.
12 their wives are reckless, their children depraved, their descendants accursed.	12 Le loro mogli sono insensate, i loro figli sono pessimi,
13 Blessed the sterile woman if she be blameless, and has not known an unlawful bed, for she wil havefruit at the visitation of souls.	13 la loro stirpe è maledetta. Fortunata in­ vece la sterile, l'immacolata la qua­le non sa che sia il talamo nel delit­to: essa avrà la ricompensa nella visita delle anime sante.
14 Blessed, too, the eunuch whose hand commits no crime, and who harbours no resentment against theLord: a special favour will be granted to him for his loyalty, a most desirable portion in the temple of the Lord.	14 (Felice) ancora l'eunuco che non ha commessa iniquità colle sue mani, che non ha pensato male contro il Signore: gli sarà dato infatti un dono speciale di fede, e la sua sorte nel tempio di Dio sarà ol­ tremodo desiderabile.
15 For the fruit of honest labours is glorious, and the root of understanding does not decay.	15 Perché glorioso è il frutto di buone fati­che e la radice della sapienza è tale da non seccar mai.
16 But the children of adulterers wil not reach maturity, the offspring of an unlawful bed wil disappear.	16 Ma i fi­gli degli adulteri non giungeranno a maturità, la razza uscita da iniquo talamo sarà sterminata.
17 Even if they live long, they wil count for nothing, their old age wil go unhonoured at the last;	17 E, dato che abbiano lunga vita, saranno stimati un niente, e la lo­ro ultima vecchiezza sarà disonorata.
18 while if they die early, they have neither hope nor comfort on the day of judgement,	18 Se poi morranno presto, non avranno speranza, nè parola di consolazione nel giorno del giudizio;
19 for the end of a race of evil-doers is harsh.	19 perchè la fine d'una razza empia è crudele.
