NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 But the souls of the upright are in the hands of God, and no torment can touch them.	1 Ma le anime de’giusti sono in mano di Dio, e non li toccherà tormento di morte.
2 To the unenlightened, they appeared to die, their departure was regarded as disaster,	2 Sembraron morire agli occhi degli stolti, e si reputò disgrazia la loro scomparsa,
3 their leaving us like annihilation; but they are at peace.	3 e il loro partirsi da noi uno sfacelo; ma essi son nella pace.
4 If, as it seemed to us, they suffered punishment, their hope was rich with immortality;	4 Anche se al cospetto degli uomini furon percossi, la loro speranza è piena d’immortalità.
5 slight was their correction, great wil their blessings be. God was putting them to the test and has provedthem worthy to be with him;	5 E per poca pena sofferta grandi benefizi conseguiranno, perchè Iddio li ha saggiati e gli ha trovati degni di sè.
6 he has tested them like gold in a furnace, and accepted them as a perfect burnt offering.	6 Come oro nel crogiolo gli ha provati e come offerta d’olocausto gli ha graditi, e a suo tempo si terrà conto di loro:
7 At their time of visitation, they wil shine out; as sparks run through the stubble, so will they.	7 risplenderanno i giusti e saran come scintille scorrenti attraverso un canneto.
8 They wil judge nations, rule over peoples, and the Lord wil be their king for ever.	8 Giudicheran le genti e domineranno i popoli, e regnerà su loro il Signore in eterno.
9 Those who trust in him wil understand the truth, those who are faithful wil live with him in love; forgrace and mercy await his holy ones, and he intervenes on behalf of his chosen.	9 Quei che in lui confidano intenderanno la verità, e i [suoi] fedeli staran con lui Dell'amore: perchè il dono e la pace son per i suoi eletti.
10 But the godless wil be duly punished for their reasoning, for having neglected the upright and desertedthe Lord.	10 Ma gli empi, a seconda del loro pensare, avranno castigo, essi che disprezzarono il giusto e s'allontananti dal Signore.
11 Yes, wretched are they who scorn wisdom and discipline: their hope is void, their toil unavailing, theirachievements unprofitable;	11 Infelice, infatti, chi rigetta la sapienza e la disciplina: vana è la loro speranza, infruttuose le loro fatiche, e inutili le opere loro.
12 their wives are reckless, their children depraved, their descendants accursed.	12 Insensate son le loro donne, e cattivi i loro figliuoli,
13 Blessed the sterile woman if she be blameless, and has not known an unlawful bed, for she wil havefruit at the visitation of souls.	13 maledetta la loro progenie. Felice [in confronto loro] la sterile senza macchia, che non conobbe talamo disonorato dal peccato: avrà il suo frutto, quando saran visitate le anime sante!
14 Blessed, too, the eunuch whose hand commits no crime, and who harbours no resentment against theLord: a special favour will be granted to him for his loyalty, a most desirable portion in the temple of the Lord.	14 E [felice del pari] l’eunuco, che non opera iniquità con le [sue] mani, nè coltivò contro Dio pensieri malvagi: chè un premio eletto sarà dato alla sua fede e l'eredità più ambita nel tempio di Dio!
15 For the fruit of honest labours is glorious, and the root of understanding does not decay.	15 Il frutto invero delle generose fatiche è glorioso, e imperitura la radice della sapienza.
16 But the children of adulterers wil not reach maturity, the offspring of an unlawful bed wil disappear.	16 Ma i figliuoli degli adulteri non giungeranno a maturità, e il seme [nato] da un talamo iniquo sarà distrutto.
17 Even if they live long, they wil count for nothing, their old age wil go unhonoured at the last;	17 Anche se avran lunga vita, non saran contati per nulla, e senza onore sarà da ultimo la loro vecchiaia.
18 while if they die early, they have neither hope nor comfort on the day of judgement,	18 Se poi morranno presto, non avran speranza nè conforto' il giorno della disamina:
19 for the end of a race of evil-doers is harsh.	19 dura infatti è la fine d’una generazione ingiusta.
