1 But the souls of the upright are in the hands of God, and no torment can touch them.	1 Ma le anime de' giusti sono in mano di Dio, e nou fi toccherà il tormento di morte;
2 To the unenlightened, they appeared to die, their departure was regarded as disaster,	2 Agli occhi degli stolti parve, ch'essi morissero, e la loro partenza fu stimata una sciagura,
3 their leaving us like annihilation; but they are at peace.	3 Ed estrema calamità l'andarsene lungi da noi; ma essi son nella pace.
4 If, as it seemed to us, they suffered punishment, their hope was rich with immortality;	4 E se nel cospetto degli uomini patiscono tormenti, la loro speranza è tutta per la immortalità.
5 slight was their correction, great wil their blessings be. God was putting them to the test and has provedthem worthy to be with him;	5 Per poche afflizioni, di molti beni saran messi a parte; perché Dio ha fatto saggio di essi, e gli ha trovati degni di se.
6 he has tested them like gold in a furnace, and accepted them as a perfect burnt offering.	6 Gli ha provati com'oro nella fornace, e gli ha ricevuti come vittima di olocausto e a suo tempo saran consolati.
7 At their time of visitation, they wil shine out; as sparks run through the stubble, so will they.	7 Risponderanno i giusti, e trascorreranno come scintille in un canneto:
8 They wil judge nations, rule over peoples, and the Lord wil be their king for ever.	8 Saranno giudici delle nazioni, e domineranno i popoli, e il Signore regnerà in essi eternamente.
9 Those who trust in him wil understand the truth, those who are faithful wil live with him in love; forgrace and mercy await his holy ones, and he intervenes on behalf of his chosen.	9 Quelli, che in lui confidano, intenderanno la verità; e quelli, che son fedeli in amarlo, a lui saranno, ubbidenti; perocché il dono, e la pace ella è per gli eletti di Dio.
10 But the godless wil be duly punished for their reasoning, for having neglected the upright and desertedthe Lord.	10 Ma gli empj secondo i lor pensamenti avranno gastigo, perché disprezzarono il giusto, e si allontanarono dal Signore.
11 Yes, wretched are they who scorn wisdom and discipline: their hope is void, their toil unavailing, theirachievements unprofitable;	11 Imperocché disgraziato è colui, che rigetta la saggezza, e la disciplina, e vane sono le loro speranze, e senza frutto le loro fatiche, e inutili le opere loro.
12 their wives are reckless, their children depraved, their descendants accursed.	12 Le loro mogli sono insensate, e pessimi i loro figliuoli.
13 Blessed the sterile woman if she be blameless, and has not known an unlawful bed, for she wil havefruit at the visitation of souls.	13 Maledetta è la loro stirpe. Ma felice quella, che non partorisce, ed è immacolata, la quale non sa, che sia talamo con delitto. Ella avrà sua mercede allorché saran visitate le anime sante.
14 Blessed, too, the eunuch whose hand commits no crime, and who harbours no resentment against theLord: a special favour will be granted to him for his loyalty, a most desirable portion in the temple of the Lord.	14 E similmente l'eunuco, il quale non ha commessa iniquità colle sue mani, e non ha pensato malamente contro Dio; perocché alla fede di lui sarà conceduto un dono insigne, e un grado sommamente desiderabile nel tempio di Dio.
15 For the fruit of honest labours is glorious, and the root of understanding does not decay.	15 Conciossiachè glorioso è il frutto de' buoni travaglj, e non deperisce la radice della sapienza.
16 But the children of adulterers wil not reach maturity, the offspring of an unlawful bed wil disappear.	16 Ma i figliuoli degli adulteri non giungeranno a maturità, e la stirpe di un talamo iniquo sarà sterminata.
17 Even if they live long, they wil count for nothing, their old age wil go unhonoured at the last;	17 E quando abbiano lunga vita, saranno stimati un niente, e disonorata sarà l'ultima loro vecchiezza.
18 while if they die early, they have neither hope nor comfort on the day of judgement,	18 E se morranno di buon'ora, non avranno speranza, né chi li consoli nel giorno, in cui saranno disaminati.
19 for the end of a race of evil-doers is harsh.	19 Conciossiachè acerbissima è la fine della stirpe dei malvagi.
