Stil speaking to Job, Yahweh said:1 But the Lord, answering Job out of the whirlwind, said:
Is Yahweh's opponent going to give way? Has God's critic thought up an answer?2 Gird your waist like a man. I will question you, and you must answer me.
Job replied to Yahweh:3 Will you make my judgment null and void; and will you condemn me so that you may be justified?
My words have been frivolous: what can I reply? I had better lay my hand over my mouth.4 And do you have an arm like God, or a voice like thunder?
I have spoken once, I shal not speak again; I have spoken twice, I have nothing more to say.5 Envelop yourself with splendor, and raise yourself up on high, and be glorious, and put on splendid garments.
Yahweh gave Job his answer from the heart of the tempest. He said:6 Scatter the arrogant with your wrath, and, when you see all the arrogant, humble them.
Brace yourself like a fighter, I am going to ask the questions, and you are to inform me!7 Look down upon each of the arrogant and confound them, and crush the impious in their place.
Do you real y want to reverse my judgement, put me in the wrong and yourself in the right?8 Hide them in the dust together and plunge their faces into the pit.
Has your arm the strength of God's, can your voice thunder as loud?9 Then I will confess that your right hand is able to save you.
Come on, display your majesty and grandeur, robe yourself in splendour and glory.10 Behold, the behemoth, whom I created along with you, eats hay like an ox.
Let the fury of your anger burst forth, humble the haughty at a glance!11 His strength is in his lower back, and his power is in the center of his abdomen.
At a glance, bring down al the proud, strike down the wicked where they stand.12 He draws up his tail like a cedar; the sinews of his thighs have been drawn together.
Bury the lot of them in the ground, shut them, every one, in the Dungeon.13 His bones are like pipes of brass; his cartilage is like plates of iron.
And I shal be the first to pay you homage, since your own right hand is strong enough to save you.14 He is the beginning of the ways of God, who made him; he will use him as his sword.
But look at Behemoth, my creature, just as you are! He feeds on greenstuff like the ox,15 The mountains bring forth grass for him; all the beasts of the field will play there.
but what strength he has in his loins, what power in his stomach muscles!16 He sleeps in the shadows, under the cover of branches, and in moist places.
His tail is as stiff as a cedar, the sinews of his thighs are tightly knit.17 The shadows cover his shadow; the willows of the brook will encircle him.
His bones are bronze tubes, his frame like forged iron.18 Behold, he will drink a river and not be amazed, and he has confidence that the Jordan could flow into his mouth.
He is the first of the works of God. His Maker threatened him with the sword,19 He will seize him through his eyes, as if with a hook, and he will bore through his nostrils, as if with stakes.
forbidding him the mountain regions and al the wild animals that play there.20 Can you draw out the leviathan with a hook, and can you bind his tongue with a cord?
Under the lotus he lies, he hides among the reeds in the swamps.21 Can you place a ring in his nose, or bore through his jaw with an arm band?
The leaves of the lotus give him shade, the willows by the stream shelter him.22 Will he offer many prayers to you, or speak to you quietly?
If the river overflows, he does not worry: Jordan might come up to his mouth, but he would not care.23 Will he form a covenant with you, and will you accept him as a servant forever?
Who is going to catch him by the eyes or put poles through his nose?24 Will you play with him as with a bird, or tether him for your handmaids?
Leviathan, too! Can you catch him with a fish-hook or hold his tongue down with a rope?25 Will your friends cut him into pieces, will dealers distribute him?
Can you put a cane through his nostrils or pierce his jaw with a hook?26 Will you fill up bags with his hide, and let his head be used as a home for fishes?
Will he plead lengthily with you, addressing you in diffident tones?27 Place your hand upon him; remember the battle and speak no more.
Will he strike a bargain with you to become your slave for life?28 Behold, his hope will fail him, and in the sight of all, he will be thrown down.
Will you make a pet of him, like a bird, keep him on a lead to amuse your little girls?
Is he to be sold by the fishing guild and then retailed by merchants?
Riddle his hide with darts? Or his head with fishing spears?
You have only to lay a finger on him never to forget the struggle or risk it again!
