1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 Allora Elifaz di Ternari prese la parola, e disse:
2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?	2 « Può forse l'uomo esser paragonato a Dio, dato anche che avesse una scienza perfetta?
3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?	3 Che vantaggio ne ha Dio, se tu sei giusto? Che gli procuri colla tua condotta irreprensibile?
4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?	4 E forse per paura ti accuserà e verrà teco in giudizio?
5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!	5 O piuttosto per la tua grande malizia e per le tue iniquità infinite?
6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,	6 Difatti senza ragione prendesti il pegno dei tuoi fratelli, e spogliasti delle loro vesti i nudi,
7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;	7 non desti da bere al trafelato, e all'affamato rifiutasti il pane.
8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,	8 Colla forza del tuo braccio t'impadronisti dei terreni, e come più forte li ritenesti,
9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.	9 rimandasti a mani vuote le vedove, e agli orfani troncasti le braccia.
10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;	10 Per questo sei circondato di lacci e oppresso da subitanei spaventi.
11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.	11 Credevi di non dover vedere le tenebre e di non essere sommerso dal diluvio delle acque.
12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?	12 E non pensi che Dio è più eccelso dei cieli, ed è esaltato sopra le stelle?
13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?	13 E dici: Che ne sa Dio? Egli giudica come attraverso la caligine.
14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'	14 E' nascosto tra le nubi, e non si cura delle nostre cose, e passeggia sopra la volta dei cieli.
15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,	15 Vuoi tu dunque seguire la strada dei secoli, battuta dagli uomini iniqui?
16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,	16 I quali furon rapiti prima del loro tempo, e la fiumana rovinò i loro fondamenti.
17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'	17 I quali dicevano a Dio: Va lungi da noi, e stimavan l'Onnipotente tale da non poter nulla,
18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!	18 dopo che Egli aveva riempite di beni le loro case.
19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:	19 Sia lungi da me il consiglio degli empi dai giusti vedranno e ne gioiranno, e l'innocente li schernirà.
20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'	20 La loro fortuna non è stata distrutta? E i loro avanzi non li ha divorati il fuoco?
21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.	21 Sottomettiti adunque a lui ed avrai pace, e così avrai ottimi frutti.
22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.	22 Prendi la legge dalla sua bocca, e metti nel tuo cuore le sue parole.
23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,	23 Se tornerai all'Onnipotente sarai ristabilito, e allontanerai l'iniquità dalla tua tenda.
24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,	24 Ti darà invece di terra vivo masso e invece del masso torrenti d'oro.
25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.	25 L'Onnipotente sarà contro i tuoi nemici, e avrai l'argento a monti.
26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.	26 Allora troverai nell'onnipotente l'abbondanza delle delizie, e alzerai a Dio la tua faccia.
27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.	27 Lo pregherai ed Egli t'esaudirà, e scioglierai i tuoi voti.
28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;	28 Decisa una cosa, ti riuscirà, e sul tuo cammino splenderà la luce.
29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.	29 Perché chi fu umiliato sarà nella gloria, e chi portò gli occhi bassi sarà salvato.
30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.	30 Sarà salvato Finnocente, sarà salvato per la purezza delle sue mani ».
