Job 22

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 Elifaz de Temã tomou a palavra nestes termos:
2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?	2 Pode o homem ser útil a Deus? O sábio só é útil a si mesmo.
3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?	3 De que serve ao Todo-poderoso que tu sejas justo? Tem ele interesse que teu proceder seja íntegro?
4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?	4 É por causa de tua piedade que ele te pune, e entra contigo em juízo?
5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!	5 Não é enorme a tua malícia, e não são inumeráveis as tuas iniqüidades?
6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,	6 Sem causa tomaste penhores a teus irmãos, despojaste de suas vestes os miseráveis;
7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;	7 não davas água ao sedento, recusavas o pão ao esfomeado.
8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,	8 A terra era do mais forte, e o protegido é que nela se estabelecia.
9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.	9 Despedias as viúvas com as mãos vazias, quebravas os braços dos órfãos.
10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;	10 Eis por que estás cercado de laços, e os terrores súbitos te amedrontam.
11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.	11 A luz obscureceu-se; já não vês nada; e o dilúvio águas te engole.
12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?	12 Não está Deus nas alturas dos céus? Vê a cabeça das estrelas como está alta!
13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?	13 E dizes: Que sabe Deus? Pode ele julgar através da nuvem opaca?
14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'	14 As nuvens formam um véu que o impede de ver; ele passeia pela abóbada do céu.
15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,	15 Segues, pois, rotas antigas por onde andavam os homens iníquos
16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,	16 que foram arrebatados antes do tempo, e cujos fundamentos foram arrastados com as águas,
17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'	17 e que diziam a Deus: Retira-te de nós, que poderia fazer-nos o Todo-poderoso?
18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!	18 Foi ele, entretanto, que lhes cumulou de bens as casas; - longe de mim os conselhos dos maus! -
19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:	19 Vendo-os, os justos se alegram, e o inocente zomba deles:
20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'	20 Nossos inimigos estão aniquilados, e o fogo devorou-lhes as riquezas!
21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.	21 Reconcilia-te, pois, com {Deus} e faz as pazes com ele, é assim que te será de novo dada a felicidade;
22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.	22 aceita a instrução de sua boca, e põe suas palavras em teu coração.
23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,	23 Se te voltares humildemente para o Todo-poderoso, se afastares a iniqüidade de tua tenda,
24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,	24 se atirares as barras de ouro ao pó, e o ouro de Ofir entre os pedregulhos da torrente,
25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.	25 o Todo-poderoso será teu ouro e um monte de prata para ti.
26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.	26 Então farás do Todo-poderoso as tuas delícias, e levantarás teu rosto a Deus.
27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.	27 Tu lhe rogarás, e ele te ouvirá, e cumprirás os teus votos:
28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;	28 formarás os teus projetos, que terão feliz êxito, e a luz brilhará em tuas veredas.
29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.	29 Pois Deus abaixa o altivo e o orgulhoso, mas socorre aquele que abaixa os olhos.
30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.	30 Salva o inocente, o qual é libertado pela pureza de suas mãos.
