1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 Da antwortete Elifas von Teman und sprach:
2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?	2 Kann denn der Mensch Gott nützen? Nein, sich selber nützt der Kluge.
3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?	3 Ist es dem Allmächtigen von Wert, dass du gerecht bist, ist es für ihn Gewinn, wenn du unsträfliche Wege gehst?
4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?	4 Wegen deiner Gottesfurcht sollte er dich strafen, vor Gericht mit dir gehen?
5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!	5 Ist nicht groß deine Bosheit, ohne Ende dein Verschulden?
6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,	6 Du pfändest ohne Grund deine Brüder, ziehst Nackten ihre Kleider aus.
7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;	7 Den Durstigen tränkst du nicht mit Wasser, dem Hungernden versagst du das Brot.
8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,	8 Dem Mann der Faust gehört das Land, der Günstling darf darin wohnen.
9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.	9 Witwen hast du weggeschickt mit leeren Händen, der Verwaisten Arme zerschlagen.
10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;	10 Deswegen liegen Fallstricke rings um dich her und jäher Schrecken ängstigt dich
11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.	11 oder Dunkel, worin du nicht siehst, und Wasserflut, die dich bedeckt.
12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?	12 Ist Gott nicht wie der Himmel hoch? Schau, wie die höchsten Sterne ragen.
13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?	13 Und da sagst du: Was weiß denn Gott? Richtet er denn durch das dunkle Gewölk?
14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'	14 Wolken umhüllen ihn, sodass er nicht sieht, am Himmelskreis geht er einher.
15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,	15 Willst du dem Pfad der Vorzeit folgen, den die Männer des Unheils zogen,
16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,	16 die vor der Zeit dahingerafft wurden, über deren Grund sich ein Strom ergoss?
17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'	17 Die sagten zu Gott: Weiche von uns!, und: Was tut uns der Allmächtige an?
18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!	18 Und doch, er hat ihre Häuser mit Gütern gefüllt und das Planen der Bösen blieb ihm fern.
19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:	19 Sehen werden, sich freuen die Gerechten, der Reine wird sie verspotten:
20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'	20 Wahrhaftig, vernichtet sind unsere Gegner, ihren Rest hat das Feuer verzehrt.
21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.	21 Werde sein Freund und halte Frieden! Nur dadurch kommt das Gute dir zu.
22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.	22 Nimm doch Weisung an aus seinem Mund, leg dir seine Worte ins Herz:
23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,	23 Kehrst du zum Allmächtigen um, so wirst du aufgerichtet. Hältst Unrecht deinem Zelt du fern,
24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,	24 wirfst in den Staub das Edelgold, zum Flussgestein das Feingold,
25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.	25 dann wird der Allmächtige dein Edelgold und erlesenes Silber für dich sein.
26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.	26 Dann wirst du am Allmächtigen dich erfreuen und zu Gott dein Angesicht heben.
27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.	27 Flehst du ihn an, so hört er dich und du wirst deine Gelübde erfüllen.
28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;	28 Beschließt du etwas, dann trifft es ein und Licht überstrahlt deine Wege.
29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.	29 Wer hochmütig redet, den duckt er, doch hilft er dem, der die Augen senkt.
30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.	30 Er rettet den, der schuldlos ist; durch deiner Hände Reinheit wird er gerettet.
