1 Eliphaz of Teman spoke next. He said:	1 Eliphaz di Theman allor prese a dire:
2 Can a human being contribute anything to God, when even someone intel igent can benefit onlyhimself?	2 Può egli agguagliarsi a Dio un uomo, quand'anche avesse una scienza perfetta?
3 Does Shaddai derive any benefit from your uprightness, or profit from your blameless conduct?	3 Torna egli forse in vantaggio di Dio se tu sarai giusto? E che aggiungi tu a lui se immacolata sarà la tua vita?
4 Do you think he is punishing you for your piety and bringing you to justice for that?	4 Forse per timor ch'egli abbia ti accuserà, e verrà teco in giudizio?
5 No, for your great wickedness, more likely, for your unlimited sins!	5 E non fa egli questo per le moltissime tue malvagità, e per le infinite tue colpe?
6 You have exacted unearned pledges from your brothers, stripped people naked of their clothes,	6 Perocché tu portasti via senza ragione il pegno de' tuoi fratelli, e spogliasti i meschini delle lor vesti.
7 failed to give water to the thirsty and refused bread to the hungry;	7 Non desti acqua al sitibondo, e pane negasti all'affamato.
8 handed the land over to a strong man, for some favoured person to move in,	8 Colla forza del tuo braccio entrasti in possesso della terra, e potendone più degli altri in essa regnavi.
9 sent widows away empty-handed and crushed the arms of orphans.	9 Le vedove rimandasti indietro senza far loro ragione, e i pupilli privasti d'ogni sostegno.
10 No wonder, then, if snares are al around you, and sudden terrors make you afraid;	10 Per questo se' cinto di lacci, e turbato da repentini terrori.
11 if light has turned to darkness, so that you cannot see, and you have been submerged in the flood.	11 E credevi che non avresti veduto mai tenebre, né saresti oppresso da tale impetuosa piena d'acque?
12 Does not God live high in the heavens, does he not see the zenith of the stars?	12 Pensi tu forse, che Dio è più sublime del cielo, e ch'ei sormonta l'altezza delle stelle?
13 And because he is up there, you have said, 'What does God know? Can he judge through the darkcloud?	13 Onde dici: Che può egli sapere Dio? Egli giudica quasi all'oscuro.
14 The clouds, to him, are an impenetrable veil, as he goes his way on the rim of the heavens.'	14 Suo nascondiglio sono le nuvole, né alle cose, nostre egli pon mente, e attorno ai cardini del cielo passeggia.
15 And wil you stil fol ow the ancient trail trodden by the wicked,	15 Vuoi tu forse camminare per quella antica strada, che fu battuta dagli empj?
16 those who were borne off before their time, whose foundations were swamped by a flood,	16 I quali furon rapiti prima del loro tempo, e la fiumana roversciò i lor fondamenti:
17 for having said to God, 'Go away! What can Shaddai do to us?'	17 I quali dicevano a Dio: Vattene da noi: e dell'Onnipotente tal avean concetto, come se nulla potesse:
18 Yet he himself had filled their houses with good things, although excluded from the plans of thewicked!	18 Mentre egli le case loro avea riempiute di beni. Lungi da me l'opinion di coloro.
19 At such a spectacle, the upright rejoice, and the innocent deride them:	19 I giusti vedranno, e ne avranno allegrezza, e l'innocente gli schernirà.
20 'See how our enemies have been destroyed! See how their wealth has perished in the flames!'	20 Non è ella stata gettata a terra la loro altezza, e i loro avanzi non son eglino stati consunti dal fuoco?
21 Wel then! Make peace with him, be reconciled, and al your happiness will be restored to you.	21 Adattati adunque a lui, e avrei pace, e da ciò raccorrai ottimi frutti.
22 Welcome the teaching from his lips, and keep his words close to your heart.	22 Dalla bocca di lui prendi legge, e nel cuor tuo imprimi le sue parole.
23 If you return, humbled, to Shaddai and drive wickedness far from your tent,	23 Se tornerai all'Onnipotente ti rimetterai in piedi, e rimoverai dalla tua casa l'iniquità.
24 if you lay your gold down on the dust, Ophir down among the pebbles of the torrent,	24 In vece di terra egli ti darà vivo masso, e in cambio di pietre, torrenti di oro.
25 Shaddai wil be bars of gold to you and silver piled in heaps.	25 L'Onnipotente sarà teco contro de' tuoi nemici, e avrai l'argento a masse.
26 Then Shaddai will be al your delight, and you wil lift your face to God.	26 Allora nell'Onnipotente troverai copia di delizie, e alzerai a Dio la tua faccia.
27 You wil pray, and he wil hear; and you wil be able to fulfil your vows.	27 Lo pregherai, ed egli ti esaudirà, e scioglierai i tuoi voti.
28 Whatever you undertake wil go wel , and light will shine on your path;	28 Risolverai una cosa, e sarà ridotta ad effetto, e le tue vie saran luminose.
29 for he casts down the pride of the arrogant, but he saves those of downcast eyes.	29 Perocché chi fu umiliato sarà in gloria, e chi portò gli occhi bassi sarà salvato.
30 He rescues anyone who is innocent; have your hands clean, and you wil be saved.	30 Sarà salvo l'innocente, e sarà salvo per la purezza delle sue mani.
