2 Maccabees 8

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA TINTORI
1 Judas, otherwise known as Maccabaeus, and his companions made their way secretly among thevil ages, ral ying their fellow-countrymen; they recruited those who remained loyal to Judaism and assembledabout six thousand.	1 Intanto Giuda Maccabeo e i suoi compagni andavano di nascosto per i castelli, e, convocando i parenti e gli amici, prendendo seco quelli restati costanti nel giudaismo, attirarono a sè sei mila uomini.
2 They cal ed on the Lord to have regard for the people oppressed on al sides, to take pity on theTemple profaned by the godless,	2 E pregavano il Signore a volger lo sguardo al popolo da tutti calpestato, ad aver pietà del suo tempio profanato dagli empi,
3 to have mercy on the city now being destroyed and level ed to the ground, to hear the blood of thevictims that cried aloud to him,	3 ad aver compassione anche della città devastata, che ben presto sarebbe rasa al suolo, ad ascoltare la voce del sangue che alzava a lui le grida,
4 to remember too the criminal slaughter of innocent babies and to avenge the blasphemies perpetratedagainst his name.	4 a ricordarsi inoltre delle iniquissime stragi di pargoletti innocenti e delle bestemmie scagliate contro il suo nome, per farne vendetta.
5 As soon as Maccabaeus had an organised force, he at once proved invincible to the foreigners, theLord's anger having turned into compassion.	5 Intanto Maccabeo, radunata molta gente, diventava insopportabile per le nazioni, perchè l'ira del Signore s'era mutata in misericordia.
6 Making surprise attacks on towns and villages, he fired them; he captured favourable positions andinflicted very heavy losses on the enemy,	6 Ed egli, piombando all'improvviso sopra i castelli e sopra le città, le dava alle fiamme, e, occupate le posizioni migliori, faceva non piccole stragi dei nemici;
7 general y availing himself of the cover of night for such enterprises. The fame of his valour spread farand wide.	7 specialmente durante le notti si portava a fare scorrerie, e la fama del suo valore si spargeva per ogni parte.
8 When Philip saw Judas was making steady progress and winning more and more frequent successes,he wrote to Ptolemy, the general officer commanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, asking for reinforcements inthe royal interest.	8 Or Filippo, vedendo che quest'uomo, a poco a poco, faceva progressi, e che il più delle volte le cose gli riuscivano felicemente, scrisse a Tolomeo, governatore della Celesiria e della Fenicia, di mandargli aiuti per la causa del re.
9 Ptolemy chose Nicanor son of Patroclus, one of the king's First Friends, and sent him without delay atthe head of an international force of at least twenty thousand men to exterminate the entire Jewish race. As hisassociate he appointed Gorgias, a professional general of wide military experience.	9 E Tolomeo mandò subito Nicànore di Patroclo, dei primi (della corte) e suo amico, dandogli non meno di venti mila armati di diverse nazioni, affinchè sterminasse tutta la razza dei Giudei, e aggiunse a lui anche Gorgia, uomo di guerra ed espertissimo nelle cose di guerra.
10 Nicanor for his part proposed, by the sale of Jewish prisoners of war, to raise the two thousand talentsof tribute money owed by the king to the Romans.	10 Nicanore aveva fissato di supplire, colla vendita degli schiavi Giudei, al tributo di due mila talenti che il re doveva dare ai Romani;
11 He lost no time in sending the seaboard towns an invitation to come and buy Jewish manpower,promising delivery of ninety head for one talent; but he did not reckon on the judgement from the Almighty thatwas soon to overtake him.	11 e subito mandò per le città marittime a invitare alla compra di schiavi Giudei, promettendo di dare novanta schiavi per un talento, senza pensare al castigo che gli sarebbe piombato addosso dall'Onnipotente.
12 When news reached Judas of Nicanor's advance, he warned his men of the enemy's approach,	12 Giuda, appena lo seppe, informò i Giudei che aveva con sè della venuta di Nicànore.
13 whereupon the cowardly ones and those who lacked confidence in the justice of God took to theirheels and ran away.	13 Di essi alcuni impauriti e senza fede nella giustizia di Dio si davano alla, fuga;
14 The rest sold al their remaining possessions, at the same time praying the Lord to deliver them fromthe godless Nicanor, who had sold them even in advance of any encounter-	14 altri poi vendevano tutto ciò che loro restava, e insieme pregavano il Signore a liberarli dall'empio Nicànore, il quale, prima di venire loro vicino, li aveva venduti,
15 if not for their own sakes, then at least out of consideration for the covenants made with theirancestors, and because they themselves bore his sacred and majestic name.	15 e a far ciò, se non per amore di essi, almeno per riguardo all'alleanza fatta coi loro padri, e perchè il suo nome santo e magnifico era invocato sopra di essi.
16 Maccabaeus marshal ed his men, who numbered about six thousand, and exhorted them not to bedismayed at the enemy or discouraged at the vast horde of gentiles wickedly advancing against them, but tofight bravely,	16 Or Maccabeo, radunati i sette mila uomini che eran con lui, li scongiurò a non venire mai a patti coi nemici, a non temere la moltitudine dei nemici che ingiustamente venivano contro di loro, ma di combattere da forti,
17 keeping before their eyes the outrage committed by them against the holy place and the infamous andscornful treatment inflicted on the city, not to mention the destruction of their traditional way of life.	17 avendo davanti agli occhi gli insulti fatti da essi iniquamente al luogo santo, e l'ingiurie alla città, resa ludibrio, e la rovina delle istituzioni degli antichi.
18 'They may put their trust in their weapons and their exploits,' he said, 'but our confidence is in almightyGod, who is able with a single nod to overthrow both those marching on us and the whole world with them.'	18 « Essi — disse — confidano nelle armi, ed anche nell'audacia; ma noi invece confidiamo nel Signore Onnipotente, il quale, con un cenno, può distruggere e quelli che vengono contro di noi e l'universo mondo ».
19 He reminded them of the occasions on which their ancestors had received help: that time when, underSennacherib, a hundred and eighty-five thousand men had perished;	19 Rammentò loro gli aiuti di Dio, dati in favore dei padri, e come sotto Scnnachcrib perirono cent'ottantacinquo mila uomini;
20 that time in Babylonia when in the battle with the Galatians the Jewish combatants numbered onlyeight thousand, with four thousand Macedonians, yet when the Macedonians were hard pressed, the eightthousand had destroyed a hundred and twenty thousand, thanks to the help they had received from Heaven, andhad taken great booty as a result.	20 e come in Babilonia, nella battaglia contro i Galati, quando i Macedoni loro alleati nella mischia esitavano, essi soli, in tutti sei mila uomini, coll'aiuto dato loro dal cielo, ne uccisero centoventi mila, ottenendo per questo grandi benefici.
21 Having so roused their courage by these words that they were ready to die for the laws and theircountry, he then divided his army into four,	21 Dopo averli con queste parole resi costanti e pronti a morire per le leggi e per la patria,
22 putting his brothers, Simon, Joseph and Jonathan in command of one division each, and assigningthem fifteen hundred men apiece.	22 diede il comando di una parte del suo esercito a ciascuno dei suoi fratelli, Simone, Giuseppe, Gionata, dando a ciascuno mille cinquecento uomini.
23 Next, he ordered Esdrias to read the Holy Book aloud and gave them their watchword 'Help fromGod'. Then, putting himself at the head of the first division, he attacked Nicanor.	23 Letto poi da Esdra il libro santo, e dato il segno dell'aiuto divino, stando egli stesso a capo del primo corpo d'esercito, attaccò la battaglia con Nicànore.
24 With the Almighty for their ally they slaughtered over nine thousand of the enemy, wounded andcrippled the greater part of Nicanor's army and put them al to flight.	24 Ed essendo venuto in loro aiuto l'Onnipotente, uccisero più di nove mila uomini, e dopo avere colle ferite indebolita la maggior parte dell'esercito di Nicànore, lo costrinsero alla fuga.
25 The money of their prospective purchasers fell into their hands. After pursuing them for a good while,they turned back, since time was pressing:	25 E tolsero il danaro a quelli che eran venuti a comprarli, e di più l'inseguirono per lungo tratto.
26 it was the eve of the Sabbath, and for that reason they did not prolong their pursuit.	26 Ma tornarono indietro costretti dall'ora: perchè era la vigilia del sabato non continuarono ad inseguirli.
27 They col ected the enemy's weapons and stripped them of their spoils, and because of the Sabbatheven more heartily blessed and praised the Lord, who had saved them and who had chosen that day for the firstmanifestation of his compassion.	27 Avendo dunque radunate le armi e le spoglie dei nemici, celebrarono il sabato, benedicendo il Signore, il quale li aveva in quel giorno liberati, stillando sopra di essi le prime gocce di misericordia.
28 When the Sabbath was over, they distributed some of the booty among the victims of the persecutionand the widows and orphans; the rest they divided among themselves and their children.	28 Passato il sabato, fecero parte delle spoglie ai deboli, agli orfani, alle vedove; il resto lo ritennero per sè e per la loro gente.
29 They then joined in public supplication, imploring the merciful Lord to be ful y reconciled with hisservants.	29 Compite queste cose, si misero a pregare tutti insieme, e scongiuravano il misericordioso Signore a placarsi per sempre coi suoi servi.
30 They also chal enged the forces of Timotheus and Bacchides and destroyed over twenty thousand ofthem, gaining possession of several high fortresses. They divided their enormous booty into two equal shares,one for themselves, the other for the victims of the persecution and the orphans and widows, not forgetting theaged.	30 Di quelli che sotto gli ordini di Timoteo e di Bacchide combattevano contro di loro ne uccisero più di venti mila, e s'impadronirono di alte fortezze, e divisero immense spoglie, dandone uguali porzioni ai deboli, agli orfani, alle vedove ed anche ai vecchi.
31 They carefully col ected the enemy's weapons and stored them in suitable places. The rest of thespoils they took to Jerusalem.	31 Racoolte con diligenza le armi dei nemici, le riposero in luoghi opportuni, e il resto delle spoglie le portarono a Gerusalemme.
32 They kil ed the tribal chieftain on Timotheus' staff, an extremely wicked man who had done great harmto the Jews.	32 Uccisero Filarco, il quale aveva seguito Timoteo, ed era un uomo scellerato che aveva fatto molto male ai Giudei.
33 In the course of their victory celebrations in Jerusalem, they burned the men who had fired the HolyGates; with Cal isthenes they had taken refuge in one smal house; so these received a fitting reward for theirsacrilege.	33 E quando furono a Gerusalemme a cantar inni per la vittoria, essendosi quel Callistene che aveva bruciate le porte sante, rifugiato in una casa, ve lo bruciarono, rendendogli giusta mercede delle sue iniquità.
34 The triple-dyed scoundrel Nicanor, who had brought the thousand merchants to buy the Jews,	34 E lo scelleratissimo Nicànore, che aveva fatti venire mille mercanti alla vendita dei Giudei,
35 finding himself with the Lord's help humbled by men he had himself reckoned as of very little account,stripped off his robes of state, and made his way across country unaccompanied, like a runaway slave, reachingAntioch by a singular stroke of fortune, since his army had been destroyed.	35 umiliato, coll'aiuto del Signore, da quelli che egli stimava uomini da nulla, lasciate le vesti d'onore, fuggendo per mezzo ai campi, arrivò solo solo ad Antiochia, ridotto a somma infelicità per la distruzione del suo esercito.
36 Thus the man who had promised the Romans to make good their tribute money by sel ing theprisoners from Jerusalem, bore witness that the Jews had a defender and that they were in consequenceinvulnerable, since they fol owed the laws which that defender had ordained.	36 Ed egli, che aveva promesso di pagare il tributo ai Romani colla vendita degli schiavi di Gerusalemme, ora diceva pubblicamente che i Giudei avevano Dio per protettore, e per questo erano in vulnerabili, perchè obbedivano alle leggi da lui stabilite.
