2 Maccabees 8

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA CEI 2008
1 Judas, otherwise known as Maccabaeus, and his companions made their way secretly among thevil ages, ral ying their fellow-countrymen; they recruited those who remained loyal to Judaism and assembledabout six thousand.	1 Intanto Giuda Maccabeo e i suoi compagni, passando di nascosto nei villaggi, chiamavano a sé i loro congiunti e, raccolti quanti erano rimasti fedeli al giudaismo, misero insieme circa seimila uomini.
2 They cal ed on the Lord to have regard for the people oppressed on al sides, to take pity on theTemple profaned by the godless,	2 Alzarono allora suppliche al Signore, perché volgesse lo sguardo al popolo da tutti calpestato, avesse pietà del tempio profanato da uomini empi,
3 to have mercy on the city now being destroyed and level ed to the ground, to hear the blood of thevictims that cried aloud to him,	3 usasse misericordia alla città devastata e prossima a essere rasa al suolo, porgesse orecchio al sangue che gridava al suo cospetto,
4 to remember too the criminal slaughter of innocent babies and to avenge the blasphemies perpetratedagainst his name.	4 non dimenticasse l’iniquo sterminio di fanciulli innocenti e le bestemmie pronunciate contro il suo nome e mostrasse il suo sdegno contro la malvagità.
5 As soon as Maccabaeus had an organised force, he at once proved invincible to the foreigners, theLord's anger having turned into compassion.	5 Il Maccabeo, postosi a capo del gruppo, divenne ormai invincibile per le nazioni, mentre l’ira del Signore si volgeva in misericordia.
6 Making surprise attacks on towns and villages, he fired them; he captured favourable positions andinflicted very heavy losses on the enemy,	6 Piombando all’improvviso su città e villaggi, li incendiava e, impadronendosi delle posizioni più opportune, metteva in fuga non pochi nemici,
7 general y availing himself of the cover of night for such enterprises. The fame of his valour spread farand wide.	7 scegliendo di preferenza la notte come tempo favorevole a queste incursioni. La fama del suo valore risuonava dovunque.
8 When Philip saw Judas was making steady progress and winning more and more frequent successes,he wrote to Ptolemy, the general officer commanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, asking for reinforcements inthe royal interest.	8 Filippo, osservando che quest’uomo a poco a poco otteneva successi e progrediva continuamente, scrisse a Tolomeo, stratega della Celesiria e della Fenicia, perché intervenisse a favore degli interessi del re.
9 Ptolemy chose Nicanor son of Patroclus, one of the king's First Friends, and sent him without delay atthe head of an international force of at least twenty thousand men to exterminate the entire Jewish race. As hisassociate he appointed Gorgias, a professional general of wide military experience.	9 Quello incaricò subito Nicànore, figlio di Pàtroclo, uno dei primi amici del re, e, affidando ai suoi ordini truppe di uomini di ogni nazione in numero non inferiore a ventimila, lo inviò a sterminare totalmente la stirpe dei Giudei. Gli associò anche Gorgia, un generale di professione, esperto in tattica militare.
10 Nicanor for his part proposed, by the sale of Jewish prisoners of war, to raise the two thousand talentsof tribute money owed by the king to the Romans.	10 Nicànore si propose di pagare il tributo che il re doveva ai Romani, che era di duemila talenti, con la vendita degli schiavi giudei.
11 He lost no time in sending the seaboard towns an invitation to come and buy Jewish manpower,promising delivery of ninety head for one talent; but he did not reckon on the judgement from the Almighty thatwas soon to overtake him.	11 Anzi, spedì senz’altro alle città della costa l’invito ad acquistare schiavi giudei, promettendo di barattare novanta prigionieri per un talento; non immaginava che la vendetta dell’Onnipotente stava per piombare su di lui.
12 When news reached Judas of Nicanor's advance, he warned his men of the enemy's approach,	12 Giuda fu informato della spedizione di Nicànore e annunciò ai suoi uomini l’avvicinarsi dell’esercito.
13 whereupon the cowardly ones and those who lacked confidence in the justice of God took to theirheels and ran away.	13 Allora i paurosi e quanti non confidavano nella giustizia di Dio fuggirono, portandosi lontano dalla zona.
14 The rest sold al their remaining possessions, at the same time praying the Lord to deliver them fromthe godless Nicanor, who had sold them even in advance of any encounter-	14 Altri vendevano tutte le cose che erano loro rimaste e insieme pregavano il Signore di salvare coloro che l’empio Nicànore aveva venduto prima ancora dello scontro:
15 if not for their own sakes, then at least out of consideration for the covenants made with theirancestors, and because they themselves bore his sacred and majestic name.	15 questo, se non per loro merito, almeno per l’alleanza con i loro padri e per riguardo al suo augusto e glorioso nome invocato sopra di loro.
16 Maccabaeus marshal ed his men, who numbered about six thousand, and exhorted them not to bedismayed at the enemy or discouraged at the vast horde of gentiles wickedly advancing against them, but tofight bravely,	16 Il Maccabeo poi, radunati i suoi uomini in numero di seimila, li esortava a non scoraggiarsi davanti ai nemici, né a lasciarsi prendere da timore di fronte alla moltitudine delle nazioni venute ingiustamente contro di loro, ma a combattere da forti,
17 keeping before their eyes the outrage committed by them against the holy place and the infamous andscornful treatment inflicted on the city, not to mention the destruction of their traditional way of life.	17 tenendo davanti agli occhi le violenze che quelli avevano iniquamente perpetrato contro il luogo santo, lo strazio della città vilipesa e ancora la soppressione dell’ordinamento politico degli antenati.
18 'They may put their trust in their weapons and their exploits,' he said, 'but our confidence is in almightyGod, who is able with a single nod to overthrow both those marching on us and the whole world with them.'	18 «Costoro – disse – confidano nelle armi e così pure nel loro ardire; noi confidiamo nel Dio onnipotente, capace di abbattere quanti vengono contro di lui e il mondo intero con un solo cenno».
19 He reminded them of the occasions on which their ancestors had received help: that time when, underSennacherib, a hundred and eighty-five thousand men had perished;	19 Ricordò loro distintamente gli interventi a favore dei loro antenati, quello contro Sennàcherib, quando morirono centoottantacinquemila uomini,
20 that time in Babylonia when in the battle with the Galatians the Jewish combatants numbered onlyeight thousand, with four thousand Macedonians, yet when the Macedonians were hard pressed, the eightthousand had destroyed a hundred and twenty thousand, thanks to the help they had received from Heaven, andhad taken great booty as a result.	20 e quello avvenuto in Babilonia nella battaglia contro i Gàlati, quando tutti si trovarono in necessità, ottomila insieme con quattromila Macèdoni: mentre i Macèdoni soccombevano, gli ottomila sterminarono centoventimila uomini con l’aiuto venuto loro dal Cielo, ricevendone un grande vantaggio.
21 Having so roused their courage by these words that they were ready to die for the laws and theircountry, he then divided his army into four,	21 Con queste parole li rese coraggiosi e pronti a morire per le leggi e per la patria. Poi divise in qualche modo l’esercito in quattro parti
22 putting his brothers, Simon, Joseph and Jonathan in command of one division each, and assigningthem fifteen hundred men apiece.	22 e mise al comando di ogni schieramento i suoi fratelli Simone, Giuseppe e Giònata, affidando a ciascuno millecinquecento uomini.
23 Next, he ordered Esdrias to read the Holy Book aloud and gave them their watchword 'Help fromGod'. Then, putting himself at the head of the first division, he attacked Nicanor.	23 Vi aggiunse Eleàzaro, lesse poi in pubblico il libro sacro e, data la parola d’ordine «Aiuto di Dio», si pose lui stesso a capo del primo reparto e attaccò Nicànore.
24 With the Almighty for their ally they slaughtered over nine thousand of the enemy, wounded andcrippled the greater part of Nicanor's army and put them al to flight.	24 L’Onnipotente si fece loro alleato ed essi uccisero più di novemila nemici, ferirono e mutilarono nelle membra la maggior parte dell’esercito di Nicànore e costrinsero tutti a fuggire.
25 The money of their prospective purchasers fell into their hands. After pursuing them for a good while,they turned back, since time was pressing:	25 Si impadronirono dei beni di quanti erano convenuti per il loro acquisto; inseguirono poi i nemici per un lungo tratto, ma impediti dall’ora tarda tornarono indietro.
26 it was the eve of the Sabbath, and for that reason they did not prolong their pursuit.	26 Era la vigilia del sabato e per questa ragione non protrassero l’inseguimento.
27 They col ected the enemy's weapons and stripped them of their spoils, and because of the Sabbatheven more heartily blessed and praised the Lord, who had saved them and who had chosen that day for the firstmanifestation of his compassion.	27 Raccolte le armi dei nemici e tolte loro le spoglie, passarono il sabato benedicendo incessantemente e ringraziando il Signore che li aveva salvati in quel giorno, cominciando ad aver misericordia per loro.
28 When the Sabbath was over, they distributed some of the booty among the victims of the persecutionand the widows and orphans; the rest they divided among themselves and their children.	28 Dopo il sabato distribuirono parte delle spoglie ai danneggiati, alle vedove, agli orfani; il resto se lo divisero tra loro e i loro figli.
29 They then joined in public supplication, imploring the merciful Lord to be ful y reconciled with hisservants.	29 Compiute queste cose, fecero una supplica in comune, scongiurando il Signore misericordioso di riconciliarsi pienamente con i suoi servi.
30 They also chal enged the forces of Timotheus and Bacchides and destroyed over twenty thousand ofthem, gaining possession of several high fortresses. They divided their enormous booty into two equal shares,one for themselves, the other for the victims of the persecution and the orphans and widows, not forgetting theaged.	30 Poi, si scontrarono anche con gli uomini di Timòteo e Bàcchide e ne uccisero più di ventimila, si impadronirono saldamente di alte fortezze e divisero l’abbondante bottino in parti uguali tra loro, i danneggiati, gli orfani, le vedove e anche i vecchi.
31 They carefully col ected the enemy's weapons and stored them in suitable places. The rest of thespoils they took to Jerusalem.	31 Raccolte le loro armi, con molta cura riposero il tutto in luoghi opportuni e portarono il resto del bottino a Gerusalemme.
32 They kil ed the tribal chieftain on Timotheus' staff, an extremely wicked man who had done great harmto the Jews.	32 Uccisero anche l’ufficiale preposto alle guardie di Timòteo, uomo scelleratissimo, che aveva fatto soffrire molto i Giudei.
33 In the course of their victory celebrations in Jerusalem, they burned the men who had fired the HolyGates; with Cal isthenes they had taken refuge in one smal house; so these received a fitting reward for theirsacrilege.	33 Mentre si celebrava la vittoria in patria, bruciarono coloro che avevano incendiato le sacre porte, compreso Callìstene, che si era rifugiato in una casupola; ricevette così una degna ricompensa per la sua empietà.
34 The triple-dyed scoundrel Nicanor, who had brought the thousand merchants to buy the Jews,	34 Il tristissimo Nicànore, colui che aveva convocato mille mercanti per la vendita dei Giudei,
35 finding himself with the Lord's help humbled by men he had himself reckoned as of very little account,stripped off his robes of state, and made his way across country unaccompanied, like a runaway slave, reachingAntioch by a singular stroke of fortune, since his army had been destroyed.	35 umiliato, con l’aiuto del Signore, da coloro che erano da lui ritenuti insignificanti, deposta la splendida veste, fuggiasco come uno schiavo attraverso la campagna e ormai privo di tutto, arrivò ad Antiòchia, già troppo fortunato per essere sopravvissuto alla rovina dell’esercito.
36 Thus the man who had promised the Romans to make good their tribute money by sel ing theprisoners from Jerusalem, bore witness that the Jews had a defender and that they were in consequenceinvulnerable, since they fol owed the laws which that defender had ordained.	36 Così, chi si riprometteva di assicurare il tributo per i Romani con la vendita dei prigionieri a Gerusalemme, confessava ora che i Giudei avevano un difensore e che i Giudei per questa ragione erano invincibili, perché obbedivano alle leggi da lui stabilite.
