2 Maccabees 8

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 Judas, otherwise known as Maccabaeus, and his companions made their way secretly among thevil ages, ral ying their fellow-countrymen; they recruited those who remained loyal to Judaism and assembledabout six thousand.	1 - Ma Giuda Maccabeo, e quelli che eran con lui, entrarono di nascosto nei castelli, e radunando pareati ed amici, e prendendo seco quelli rimasti fedeli al giudaismo, trassero a sè da seimila uomini.
2 They cal ed on the Lord to have regard for the people oppressed on al sides, to take pity on theTemple profaned by the godless,	2 Ed invocavano il Signore, che guardasse benignamente il popolo conculcato da tutti, avesse misericordia del tempio contaminato dagli empii,
3 to have mercy on the city now being destroyed and level ed to the ground, to hear the blood of thevictims that cried aloud to him,	3 si commovesse allo sterminio della città prossima ad essere spianata al suolo, ed ascoltasse la voce del sangue che a lui gridava;
4 to remember too the criminal slaughter of innocent babies and to avenge the blasphemies perpetratedagainst his name.	4 ricordasse anche la scellerata uccisione di innocenti fanciulli, e le bestemmie proferite contro il suo nome, e le punisse.
5 As soon as Maccabaeus had an organised force, he at once proved invincible to the foreigners, theLord's anger having turned into compassion.	5 Il Maccabeo dunque, radunate le sue forze, divenne invincibile agli stranieri, perchè lo sdegno del Signore [contro il suo popolo] s'era cambiato in misericordia.
6 Making surprise attacks on towns and villages, he fired them; he captured favourable positions andinflicted very heavy losses on the enemy,	6 Piombando all0improvviso su castelli e città, vi dava fuoco; ed occupando le posizioni più adatte, faceva non poca strage dei nemici.
7 general y availing himself of the cover of night for such enterprises. The fame of his valour spread farand wide.	7 Massimamente, si dava di notte a tali scorrerie, e la fama del suo valore si spargeva per tutto.
8 When Philip saw Judas was making steady progress and winning more and more frequent successes,he wrote to Ptolemy, the general officer commanding Coele-Syria and Phoenicia, asking for reinforcements inthe royal interest.	8 Filippo dunque, vedendo che quegli s'avvantaggiava sempre più, e che le cose gli riuscivano quasi sempre seconde, scrisse a Tolomeo duce della Celesiria e Fenicia, che venisse in aiuto alla causa del re.
9 Ptolemy chose Nicanor son of Patroclus, one of the king's First Friends, and sent him without delay atthe head of an international force of at least twenty thousand men to exterminate the entire Jewish race. As hisassociate he appointed Gorgias, a professional general of wide military experience.	9 Quegli mandò subito Nicanore di Patroclo, de' grandi di corte, avendogli dati non meno di ventimila uomini armati di diverse nazioni, acciò disperdesse l'intera razza del Giudei, ed aggiuntogli Gorgia uomo d'armi espertissimo nelle cose di guerra.
10 Nicanor for his part proposed, by the sale of Jewish prisoners of war, to raise the two thousand talentsof tribute money owed by the king to the Romans.	10 Nicanore poi si propose di supplire al tributo che il re doveva ai Romani con duemila talenti ricavati dal Giudei fatti prigionieri;
11 He lost no time in sending the seaboard towns an invitation to come and buy Jewish manpower,promising delivery of ninety head for one talent; but he did not reckon on the judgement from the Almighty thatwas soon to overtake him.	11 perciò, mandò subito alle città di mare, invitando a comprare schiavi giudei, promettendo di darne novanta per ogni talento, senza pensar al castigo che gli sovrastava da parte dell'onnipotente.
12 When news reached Judas of Nicanor's advance, he warned his men of the enemy's approach,	12 Giuda poi, quando lo seppe, avvertì i suoi della venuta di Nicanore.
13 whereupon the cowardly ones and those who lacked confidence in the justice of God took to theirheels and ran away.	13 D'essi, alcuni impauriti, non fiduciosi della giustizia di Dio, si dettero alla fuga;
14 The rest sold al their remaining possessions, at the same time praying the Lord to deliver them fromthe godless Nicanor, who had sold them even in advance of any encounter-	14 altri poi vendevano quel che era a loro rimasto, ed insieme pregavano il Signore a liberarli da quell'empio Nicanore, che li aveva messi in vendita prima ancora di vederli in viso;
15 if not for their own sakes, then at least out of consideration for the covenants made with theirancestors, and because they themselves bore his sacred and majestic name.	15 che se non per amor di loro, [li esaudisse] almeno per il patto che aveva conchiuso coi loro padri, e per l'invocazione del santo e magnifico nome suo sopra di loro.
16 Maccabaeus marshal ed his men, who numbered about six thousand, and exhorted them not to bedismayed at the enemy or discouraged at the vast horde of gentiles wickedly advancing against them, but tofight bravely,	16 Radunati dunque i settemila che eran con lui, il Maccabeo li scongiurava a non patteggiar coi nemici, nè temer la moltitudine de' medesimi che empiamente li assaliva; ma combattessero da forti,
17 keeping before their eyes the outrage committed by them against the holy place and the infamous andscornful treatment inflicted on the city, not to mention the destruction of their traditional way of life.	17 tenendo presente la profanazione da quelli iniquamente recata al luogo santo, e l'ingiuria e l’obbrobrio fatto alla città, ed anche l’abolizione delle leggi degli avi.
18 'They may put their trust in their weapons and their exploits,' he said, 'but our confidence is in almightyGod, who is able with a single nod to overthrow both those marching on us and the whole world with them.'	18 «Perchè costoro» disse «confidano nell'armi, e nel loro ardire; ma noi confidiamo in quell’onnipotente Signore, che può con un sol cenno distruggere i nostri assalitori ed il mondo tutto. »
19 He reminded them of the occasions on which their ancestors had received help: that time when, underSennacherib, a hundred and eighty-five thousand men had perished;	19 Ricordò loro i soccorsi da Dio dati ai loro avi ; e come, sotto Sennacherib, perirono centottantacinquemila [nemici] ;
20 that time in Babylonia when in the battle with the Galatians the Jewish combatants numbered onlyeight thousand, with four thousand Macedonians, yet when the Macedonians were hard pressed, the eightthousand had destroyed a hundred and twenty thousand, thanks to the help they had received from Heaven, andhad taken great booty as a result.	20 e la battaglia che ebbero contro i Galati, in Babilonia, ove, quando si venne alle mani, i Macedoni loro alleati stando per cedere, essi soli, seimila in tutto, ne uccisero centomila con l'aiuto dato loro dal cielo, e ne ritrassero grandi benefizi.
21 Having so roused their courage by these words that they were ready to die for the laws and theircountry, he then divided his army into four,	21 A queste parole, si animarono, pronti a morire per le leggi e la patria.
22 putting his brothers, Simon, Joseph and Jonathan in command of one division each, and assigningthem fifteen hundred men apiece.	22 Allora [Giuda] mise a capo di ciascuna divisione i suoi fratelli Simone, Giuseppe e Gionata, dando a ciascuno millecinquecento uomini.
23 Next, he ordered Esdrias to read the Holy Book aloud and gave them their watchword 'Help fromGod'. Then, putting himself at the head of the first division, he attacked Nicanor.	23 Dopo, ciò letto ancora da Esdra il libro santo, e data per parola d'ordine «Iddio ci aiuta », egli stesso, il duce, con la prima schiera, attaccò Nicanore.
24 With the Almighty for their ally they slaughtered over nine thousand of the enemy, wounded andcrippled the greater part of Nicanor's army and put them al to flight.	24 E con l'aiuto dell' Onnipotente, uccisero più di novemila uomini, e misero in fuga la maggior parte dell'esercito di Nicanore indebolita per le ferite.
25 The money of their prospective purchasers fell into their hands. After pursuing them for a good while,they turned back, since time was pressing:	25 Ed impossessatisi del danaro di quelli che eran venuti per comprarli, li inseguirono senza tregua ;
26 it was the eve of the Sabbath, and for that reason they did not prolong their pursuit.	26 ma poi dovettero tornar indietro, pressati dall'ora, perchè era la vigilia del sabato; per questo non proseguirono nelT inseguimento.
27 They col ected the enemy's weapons and stripped them of their spoils, and because of the Sabbatheven more heartily blessed and praised the Lord, who had saved them and who had chosen that day for the firstmanifestation of his compassion.	27 Raccolte poi le armi e le spoglie di loro, celebrarono il sabato benedicendo il Signore che in quel giorno li aveva liberati, piovendo su loro il principio della sua misericordia.
28 When the Sabbath was over, they distributed some of the booty among the victims of the persecutionand the widows and orphans; the rest they divided among themselves and their children.	28 Dopo il sabato poi, fecero parte delle spoglie ai mutilati, agli orfani, alle vedove; ed essi coi loro presero il rimanente.
29 They then joined in public supplication, imploring the merciful Lord to be ful y reconciled with hisservants.	29 Compiute queste cose, fecero tutti insieme una supplicazione, pregando il misericordioso Signore che conducesse a termine la sua riconciliazione co’ servi suoi.
30 They also chal enged the forces of Timotheus and Bacchides and destroyed over twenty thousand ofthem, gaining possession of several high fortresses. They divided their enormous booty into two equal shares,one for themselves, the other for the victims of the persecution and the orphans and widows, not forgetting theaged.	30 Di poi, di quelli condotti contro di loro da Timoteo e Bacchide, ne uccisero oltre a ventimila; occuparono fortezze importantissime, e si spartirono molte prede, facendone giusta porzione ai mutilati, al pupilli, alle vedove, ed anche ai seniori, ai e raccolte diligentemente le armi dei nemici, le ammassarono in luoghi adattati, c trasportarono a Gerusalemme le rimanenti spoglie.
31 They carefully col ected the enemy's weapons and stored them in suitable places. The rest of thespoils they took to Jerusalem.	31 E misero a morte Filarche, uomo scellerato che era con Timoteo, ed aveva fatto molto male a’ Giudei.
32 They kil ed the tribal chieftain on Timotheus' staff, an extremely wicked man who had done great harmto the Jews.	32 Celebrando poi la vittoria in Gerusalemme, a colui che aveva incendiato le porte del tempio, chiamato Callistene, e s’era rifugiato in una certa casa, dettero fuoco, rendendogli cosi degna mercede per le sue empietà.
33 In the course of their victory celebrations in Jerusalem, they burned the men who had fired the HolyGates; with Cal isthenes they had taken refuge in one smal house; so these received a fitting reward for theirsacrilege.	33 Lo scelleratissimo Nicanore poi, che aveva condotti seco mille mercanti per vender loro i Giudei,
34 The triple-dyed scoundrel Nicanor, who had brought the thousand merchants to buy the Jews,	34 umiliato con l’aiuto di Dio da quelli ch’egli reputava un niente, deposta la ricca veste, fuggendo solo per le vie traverse, venne ad Antiochia in somma afflizione per la perdita del suo esercito.
35 finding himself with the Lord's help humbled by men he had himself reckoned as of very little account,stripped off his robes of state, and made his way across country unaccompanied, like a runaway slave, reachingAntioch by a singular stroke of fortune, since his army had been destroyed.	35 Ed egli che aveva promesso ai Romani di pagar loro il tributo con la vendita de' prigionieri di Gerusalemme, andava ora predicando che i Giudei avevano Dio per protettore, e per ciò erano Invulnerabili perchè seguivano le leggi da lui stabilite.
36 Thus the man who had promised the Romans to make good their tribute money by sel ing theprisoners from Jerusalem, bore witness that the Jews had a defender and that they were in consequenceinvulnerable, since they fol owed the laws which that defender had ordained.
