1 Maccabees 8

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 Now Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans: how strong they were, and how wel disposedtowards any who made common cause with them, making a treaty of friendship with anyone who approachedthem.	1 Pela voz da fama soube Judas que os romanos eram extremamente poderosos, que se mostravam benevolentes para com seus aliados, e que a todos os que recorriam a eles ofereciam sua amizade, porque eram verdadeiramente potentes.
2 (And, indeed, they were extremely powerful.) He had been told of their wars and of their prowessamong the Gauls, whom they had conquered and put under tribute;	2 Contaram-lhe também seus combates, suas façanhas junto aos gauleses, aos quais haviam vencido e subjugado;
3 and of al they had done in the province of Spain to gain possession of the silver and gold mines there,	3 como haviam chegado à Espanha para se apoderar das minas de prata e de ouro que ali existem e, como, por sua sabedoria e longanimidade, eles haviam conciliado todo o país,
4 making themselves masters of the whole country by their determination and perseverance, despite itsgreat distance from their own; of the kings who came from the ends of the earth to attack them, only to becrushed by them and overwhelmed with disaster, and of others who paid them annual tribute;	4 por mais que ele fosse afastado deles; como haviam derrotado reis que haviam surgido contra eles das extremidades da terra, e os haviam aniquilado devidamente, enquanto outros lhes pagavam o tributo anual.
5 Philip, Perseus king of the Kittim, and others who had dared to make war on them, had been defeatedand reduced to subjection,	5 Filipe Perseu, rei dos ceteus, e outros se haviam insurgido contra eles, mas tinham sido derrotados e subjugados.
6 while Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had advanced to attack them with a hundred and twentyelephants, cavalry, chariots and a very large army, had also suffered defeat at their hands;	6 Antíoco, o Grande, rei da Ásia, lhes tinha movido guerra com cento e vinte elefantes, cavalaria, carros e um numeroso exército, mas havia sido aniquilado por eles.

10 the latter had got wind of it and, sending a single general against them, had fought a campaign inwhich they inflicted heavy casualties, carried their women and children away into captivity, pillaged their goods,subdued their country, tore down their fortresses and reduced them to a slavery lasting to the present day;	10 e enviaram um general que os atacou, levando a perecer um grande número, arrastou ao cativeiro suas mulheres e seus filhos, saqueou e tornou-se senhor do país, destruiu suas praças fortes e os reduziu à servidão, que ainda durava.

12 But where their friends and those who relied on them were concerned, they had always stood by theirfriendship. 13 One man, if they determined to help him and advance him to a throne, would certainly occupy it, whileanother, if they so determined, would find himself deposed; their influence was paramount.	13 Aqueles que eles queriam auxiliar e ver reinar, reinavam com efeito, mas os que eles não queriam, eram exilados. 14 In spite of al this, no single one of them had assumed a crown or put on the purple for his ownaggrandisement.	14 Apesar de tudo isso, ninguém deles trazia diadema, nem se envolvia com púrpura, para se engrandecer.
15 They had set up a senate, where three hundred and twenty councillors deliberated daily, constantlydebating how best to regulate public affairs.	15 Eles tinham estabelecido entre si um conselho supremo onde, cada dia, trezentos e vinte conselheiros discutiam assuntos do povo, para governá-lo bem.
16 They entrusted their government to one man for a year at a time, with absolute power over their wholeempire, and this man was obeyed by al without envy or jealousy.	16 Cada ano confiavam a autoridade suprema a um só homem, que comandava em todo o território e todos obedeciam a um só, sem haver ali entre eles nem inveja nem ciúme.
17 Having chosen Eupolemus son of John, of the family of Accos, and Jason son of Eleazar, Judas sentthem to Rome to make a treaty of friendship and al iance with these people,	17 Escolheu Judas a Eupolemo, filho de João, filho de Acos, e Jasão, filho de Eleazar, e enviou-os a Roma, para estabelecer amizade e aliança com eles,
18 in the hope of being rid of the yoke, for they could see that Greek rule was reducing Israel to slavery.	18 pedindo-lhes que os libertasse do jugo que os gregos, como estavam vendo, faziam pesar sobre Israel, reduzindo-o à escravidão.
19 The envoys made the lengthy journey to Rome and presented themselves before the Senate withtheir formal proposal:	19 Dirigiram-se eles a Roma, apesar da duração da viagem, e entraram no Senado, onde disseram:
20 'Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to conclude a treatyof al iance and peace with you, and to enrol ourselves as your al ies and friends.'	20 Judas Macabeu, seus irmãos e todo o povo de Israel nos enviaram a vós, para concluir aliança e paz, e para que nos conteis entre vossos amigos e aliados.
21 The proposal met with the approval of the senators.	21 Essa linguagem agradou aos romanos e
22 Here is a copy of the rescript which they engraved on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem to be keptthere by the Jews as a record of peace and al iance:	22 eis a cópia da carta que os romanos mandaram gravar sobre tabuletas de bronze e enviaram a Jerusalém, para ali ficar como memorial da paz e da amizade de sua parte:
23 'Good fortune attend the Romans and the Jewish nation by sea and land for ever; may sword orenemy be far from them!	23 Felicidade para sempre aos romanos e ao povo judeu, por terra e por mar! Longe deles esteja a espada e o inimigo!
24 'If war comes first to Rome or any of her al ies throughout her dominions,	24 Se sobrevier uma guerra contra os romanos ou contra um de seus aliados em todo império,
25 the Jewish nation wil take action as her al y, as occasion may require, and do it wholeheartedly.	25 o povo judeu tome as armas por sua vez, conforme o permitirem as circunstâncias e isso de boa vontade.
26 They wil not give or supply to the enemy any grain, arms, money or ships: thus has Rome decided,and they are to honour their obligations without guarantees.	26 Não fornecerão aos adversários nem trigo, nem armas, nem dinheiro, nem navios, segundo a vontade dos romanos. Os judeus observarão esses contratos sem receber nada.
27 In the same way, if war comes first to the Jewish nation, the Romans wil support them energetical yas occasion may offer,	27 Por outro lado, se for o povo judeu o atacado, os romanos tomarão armas voluntariamente por eles conforme as circunstâncias o indicarem.
28 and the aggressor wil not be furnished with grain, arms, money or ships: such is the Roman decision,and they wil honour these obligations without treachery.	28 E não será fornecido aos combatentes nem trigo, nem armas, nem dinheiro, nem navios, conforme a vontade de Roma, e esses contratos serão observados sem fraude.
29 Such are the articles under which the Romans have concluded their treaty with the Jewish people.	29 Por essas palavras os romanos aliaram-se com os judeus.
30 If, later, either party should decide to make any addition or deletion, they wil be free to do so, and anysuch addition or deletion wil be binding.	30 Se uns ou outros contratantes quiserem ajuntar ou subtrair e essas cláusulas, farão a proposta, e o que for acrescentado ou tirado será ratificado.
31 'As regards the wrongs done to them by King Demetrius, we have written to him in these terms: Whyhave you made your yoke lie heavy on our friends and al ies the Jews?	31 Pelo que toca aos danos causados pelo rei Demétrio, eis o que nós lhe escrevemos: Por que fizestes pesar vosso jugo sobre os judeus, nossos amigos e aliados?
32 If they appeal against you again, we shal uphold their rights and make war on you by sea and land.'	32 Se, pois, eles vierem a nós outra vez contra vós, nós lhes faremos justiça e vos combateremos, por terra e mar.
