NEW JERUSALEMGREEK BIBLE
Now Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans: how strong they were, and how wel disposedtowards any who made common cause with them, making a treaty of friendship with anyone who approachedthem.1 και ηκουσεν ιουδας το ονομα των ρωμαιων οτι εισιν δυνατοι ισχυι και αυτοι ευδοκουσιν εν πασιν τοις προστιθεμενοις αυτοις και οσοι αν προσελθωσιν αυτοις ιστωσιν αυτοις φιλιαν και οτι εισι δυνατοι ισχυι
(And, indeed, they were extremely powerful.) He had been told of their wars and of their prowessamong the Gauls, whom they had conquered and put under tribute;2 και διηγησαντο αυτω τους πολεμους αυτων και τας ανδραγαθιας ας ποιουσιν εν τοις γαλαταις και οτι κατεκρατησαν αυτων και ηγαγον αυτους υπο φορον
and of al they had done in the province of Spain to gain possession of the silver and gold mines there,3 και οσα εποιησαν εν χωρα σπανιας του κατακρατησαι των μεταλλων του αργυριου και του χρυσιου του εκει
making themselves masters of the whole country by their determination and perseverance, despite itsgreat distance from their own; of the kings who came from the ends of the earth to attack them, only to becrushed by them and overwhelmed with disaster, and of others who paid them annual tribute;4 και κατεκρατησαν του τοπου παντος τη βουλη αυτων και τη μακροθυμια και ο τοπος ην απεχων μακραν απ' αυτων σφοδρα και των βασιλεων των επελθοντων επ' αυτους απ' ακρου της γης εως συνετριψαν αυτους και επαταξαν εν αυτοις πληγην μεγαλην και οι επιλοιποι διδοασιν αυτοις φορον κατ' ενιαυτον
Philip, Perseus king of the Kittim, and others who had dared to make war on them, had been defeatedand reduced to subjection,5 και τον φιλιππον και τον περσεα κιτιεων βασιλεα και τους επηρμενους επ' αυτους συνετριψαν αυτους εν πολεμω και κατεκρατησαν αυτων
while Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had advanced to attack them with a hundred and twentyelephants, cavalry, chariots and a very large army, had also suffered defeat at their hands;6 και αντιοχον τον μεγαν βασιλεα της ασιας τον πορευθεντα επ' αυτους εις πολεμον εχοντα εκατον εικοσι ελεφαντας και ιππον και αρματα και δυναμιν πολλην σφοδρα και συνετριβη υπ' αυτων
they had taken him alive and imposed on him and his successors, on agreed terms, the payment of anenormous tribute, the surrender of hostages, and the cession7 και ελαβον αυτον ζωντα και εστησαν αυτοις διδοναι αυτον τε και τους βασιλευοντας μετ' αυτον φορον μεγαν και διδοναι ομηρα και διαστολην
of the Indian territory, with Media, Lydia, and some of their best provinces, which they took from himand gave to King Eumenes.8 και χωραν την ινδικην και μηδιαν και λυδιαν απο των καλλιστων χωρων αυτων και λαβοντες αυτας παρ' αυτου εδωκαν αυτας ευμενει τω βασιλει
Judas had also heard how, when the Greeks planned an expedition to destroy the Romans,9 και οτι οι εκ της ελλαδος εβουλευσαντο ελθειν και εξαραι αυτους
the latter had got wind of it and, sending a single general against them, had fought a campaign inwhich they inflicted heavy casualties, carried their women and children away into captivity, pillaged their goods, subdued their country, tore down their fortresses and reduced them to a slavery lasting to the present day;10 και εγνωσθη ο λογος αυτοις και απεστειλαν επ' αυτους στρατηγον ενα και επολεμησαν προς αυτους και επεσον εξ αυτων τραυματιαι πολλοι και ηχμαλωτισαν τας γυναικας αυτων και τα τεκνα αυτων και επρονομευσαν αυτους και κατεκρατησαν της γης και καθειλον τα οχυρωματα αυτων και κατεδουλωσαντο αυτους εως της ημερας ταυτης
and how they had destroyed and subjugated al the other kingdoms and islands that resisted them.11 και τας επιλοιπους βασιλειας και τας νησους οσοι ποτε αντεστησαν αυτοις κατεφθειραν και εδουλωσαν αυτους μετα δε των φιλων αυτων και των επαναπαυομενων αυτοις συνετηρησαν φιλιαν
But where their friends and those who relied on them were concerned, they had always stood by theirfriendship. They had subdued kings far and near, and al who heard their name went in terror of them.12 και κατεκρατησαν των βασιλεων των εγγυς και των μακραν και οσοι ηκουον το ονομα αυτων εφοβουντο απ' αυτων
One man, if they determined to help him and advance him to a throne, would certainly occupy it, whileanother, if they so determined, would find himself deposed; their influence was paramount.13 οις δ' αν βουλωνται βοηθειν και βασιλευειν βασιλευουσιν ους δ' αν βουλωνται μεθιστωσιν και υψωθησαν σφοδρα
In spite of al this, no single one of them had assumed a crown or put on the purple for his ownaggrandisement.14 και εν πασιν τουτοις ουκ επεθεντο αυτων ουδε εις διαδημα ουδε περιεβαλοντο πορφυραν ωστε αδρυνθηναι εν αυτη
They had set up a senate, where three hundred and twenty councillors deliberated daily, constantlydebating how best to regulate public affairs.15 και βουλευτηριον εποιησαν εαυτοις και καθ' ημεραν εβουλευοντο τριακοσιοι και εικοσι βουλευομενοι δια παντος περι του πληθους του ευκοσμειν αυτους
They entrusted their government to one man for a year at a time, with absolute power over their wholeempire, and this man was obeyed by al without envy or jealousy.16 και πιστευουσιν ενι ανθρωπω αρχειν αυτων κατ' ενιαυτον και κυριευειν πασης της γης αυτων και παντες ακουουσιν του ενος και ουκ εστιν φθονος ουδε ζηλος εν αυτοις
Having chosen Eupolemus son of John, of the family of Accos, and Jason son of Eleazar, Judas sentthem to Rome to make a treaty of friendship and al iance with these people,17 και επελεξατο ιουδας τον ευπολεμον υιον ιωαννου του ακκως και ιασονα υιον ελεαζαρου και απεστειλεν αυτους εις ρωμην στησαι φιλιαν και συμμαχιαν
in the hope of being rid of the yoke, for they could see that Greek rule was reducing Israel to slavery.18 και του αραι τον ζυγον απ' αυτων οτι ειδον την βασιλειαν των ελληνων καταδουλουμενους τον ισραηλ δουλεια
The envoys made the lengthy journey to Rome and presented themselves before the Senate withtheir formal proposal:19 και επορευθησαν εις ρωμην και η οδος πολλη σφοδρα και εισηλθοσαν εις το βουλευτηριον και απεκριθησαν και ειπον
'Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to conclude a treatyof al iance and peace with you, and to enrol ourselves as your al ies and friends.'20 ιουδας ο και μακκαβαιος και οι αδελφοι αυτου και το πληθος των ιουδαιων απεστειλαν ημας προς υμας στησαι μεθ' υμων συμμαχιαν και ειρηνην και γραφηναι ημας συμμαχους και φιλους υμων
The proposal met with the approval of the senators.21 και ηρεσεν ο λογος ενωπιον αυτων
Here is a copy of the rescript which they engraved on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem to be keptthere by the Jews as a record of peace and al iance:22 και τουτο το αντιγραφον της επιστολης ης αντεγραψαν επι δελτοις χαλκαις και απεστειλαν εις ιερουσαλημ ειναι παρ' αυτοις εκει μνημοσυνον ειρηνης και συμμαχιας
'Good fortune attend the Romans and the Jewish nation by sea and land for ever; may sword orenemy be far from them!23 καλως γενοιτο ρωμαιοις και τω εθνει ιουδαιων εν τη θαλασση και επι της ξηρας εις τον αιωνα και ρομφαια και εχθρος μακρυνθειη απ' αυτων
'If war comes first to Rome or any of her al ies throughout her dominions,24 εαν δε ενστη πολεμος ρωμη προτερα η πασιν τοις συμμαχοις αυτων εν παση τη κυριεια αυτων
the Jewish nation wil take action as her al y, as occasion may require, and do it wholeheartedly.25 συμμαχησει το εθνος των ιουδαιων ως αν ο καιρος υπογραφη αυτοις καρδια πληρει
They wil not give or supply to the enemy any grain, arms, money or ships: thus has Rome decided, and they are to honour their obligations without guarantees.26 και τοις πολεμουσιν ου δωσουσιν ουδε επαρκεσουσιν σιτον οπλα αργυριον πλοια ως εδοξεν ρωμη και φυλαξονται τα φυλαγματα αυτων ουθεν λαβοντες
In the same way, if war comes first to the Jewish nation, the Romans wil support them energetical yas occasion may offer,27 κατα τα αυτα δε εαν εθνει ιουδαιων συμβη προτεροις πολεμος συμμαχησουσιν οι ρωμαιοι εκ ψυχης ως αν αυτοις ο καιρος υπογραφη
and the aggressor wil not be furnished with grain, arms, money or ships: such is the Roman decision, and they wil honour these obligations without treachery.28 και τοις συμμαχουσιν ου δοθησεται σιτος οπλα αργυριον πλοια ως εδοξεν ρωμη και φυλαξονται τα φυλαγματα ταυτα και ου μετα δολου
Such are the articles under which the Romans have concluded their treaty with the Jewish people.29 κατα τους λογους τουτους ουτως εστησαν ρωμαιοι τω δημω των ιουδαιων
If, later, either party should decide to make any addition or deletion, they wil be free to do so, and anysuch addition or deletion wil be binding.30 εαν δε μετα τους λογους τουτους βουλευσωνται ουτοι και ουτοι προσθειναι η αφελειν ποιησονται εξ αιρεσεως αυτων και ο αν προσθωσιν η αφελωσιν εσται κυρια
'As regards the wrongs done to them by King Demetrius, we have written to him in these terms: Whyhave you made your yoke lie heavy on our friends and al ies the Jews?31 και περι των κακων ων ο βασιλευς δημητριος συντελειται εις αυτους εγραψαμεν αυτω λεγοντες δια τι εβαρυνας τον ζυγον σου επι τους φιλους ημων τους συμμαχους ιουδαιους
If they appeal against you again, we shal uphold their rights and make war on you by sea and land.'32 εαν ουν ετι εντυχωσιν κατα σου ποιησομεν αυτοις την κρισιν και πολεμησομεν σε δια της θαλασσης και δια της ξηρας
