1 Now Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans: how strong they were, and how wel disposedtowards any who made common cause with them, making a treaty of friendship with anyone who approachedthem.	1 - E giunse agli orecchi di Giuda la fama del Romani, che sono forti e potenti, e accondiscendono a tutto quanto vien loro richiesto, e che con quanti s'erano a loro accostati avevan fatto amicizia, e sono forti e potenti.
2 (And, indeed, they were extremely powerful.) He had been told of their wars and of their prowessamong the Gauls, whom they had conquered and put under tribute;	2 Si sentiva dire delle battaglie e delle prove di valore che avevano dato in Galazia, soggiogando quella gente ed imponendole un tributo.
3 and of al they had done in the province of Spain to gain possession of the silver and gold mines there,	3 E di quanto avevan fatto nella Spagna, dove s'erano impadroniti di quelle miniere d'oro e d'argento, conquistando a forza di senno e di perseveranza tutta quella regione;
4 making themselves masters of the whole country by their determination and perseverance, despite itsgreat distance from their own; of the kings who came from the ends of the earth to attack them, only to becrushed by them and overwhelmed with disaster, and of others who paid them annual tribute;	4 e luoghi da loro distantissimi, e re che s'eran mossi contro di loro sin dall'estremità della terra, li avevano annientati e percossi di piaga grande; gli altri poi pagavano a lpro un tributo ogni anno.
5 Philip, Perseus king of the Kittim, and others who had dared to make war on them, had been defeatedand reduced to subjection,	5 Filippo, e Perseo, re de' Cetei, e quanti avevan preso le armi contro di loro, essi li avevano disfatti in battaglia e soggiogati.
6 while Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had advanced to attack them with a hundred and twentyelephants, cavalry, chariots and a very large army, had also suffered defeat at their hands;	6 Antioco il Grande, re di Asia, che li aveva assaliti con centoventi elefanti e cavalieri e carri ed un esercito numerosissimo, era stato sconfitto;
7 they had taken him alive and imposed on him and his successors, on agreed terms, the payment of anenormous tribute, the surrender of hostages, and the cession	7 l’avevano preso vivo, ed obbligato a pagare, egli ed i suol successori nel regno, un forte tributo, consegnare ostaggi, e sottostare all’imposizione.
8 of the Indian territory, with Media, Lydia, and some of their best provinces, which they took from himand gave to King Eumenes.	8 Le regioni degli Indii e de'Medii, e dei Lidii, le più ricche di quelle province, dopo averle prese, le avevano date al re Eumenè.
9 Judas had also heard how, when the Greeks planned an expedition to destroy the Romans,	9 E quelli della Grecia avevan voluto marciare contro di loro, e sconfiggerli; ma essi ne ebbero sentore;
10 the latter had got wind of it and, sending a single general against them, had fought a campaign inwhich they inflicted heavy casualties, carried their women and children away into captivity, pillaged their goods,subdued their country, tore down their fortresses and reduced them to a slavery lasting to the present day;	10 e mandarono un capitano, e combatteron con loro, uccidendone molti, e conducendo schiave le mogli ed i figli; li depredarono, s'impadronirono del loro paese, abbatterono le loro mura, e li sottoposero a loro dominio lnsino ad ora.
11 and how they had destroyed and subjugated al the other kingdoms and islands that resisted them.	11 E tutti gli altri regni ed isole che una volta avessero loro resistito, li sterminavano e li soggiogavano.
12 But where their friends and those who relied on them were concerned, they had always stood by theirfriendship. They had subdued kings far and near, and al who heard their name went in terror of them.	12 Ma con gli amici, e con quelli che si fidavan di loro, avevano serbata amicizia; ed avevano conquistato regni vicini e lontani, perchè chiunque udiva il loro nome n'aveva paura;
13 One man, if they determined to help him and advance him to a throne, would certainly occupy it, whileanother, if they so determined, would find himself deposed; their influence was paramount.	13 quelli che essi volevano aiutare acciò regnassero, regnavano; e scacciavano dal trono chiunque volevano; e s'erano ingranditi a dismisura.
14 In spite of al this, no single one of them had assumed a crown or put on the purple for his ownaggrandisement.	14 Ma con tutto ciò, nessuno portava diadema nè vestiva di porpora, per fare il grande.
15 They had set up a senate, where three hundred and twenty councillors deliberated daily, constantlydebating how best to regulate public affairs.	15 Si eran eletto un senato, ed ogni giorno chiamavano a consiglio quei trecentoventi, sempre per deliberare della cosa pubblica, e fare quel che fosse degno.
16 They entrusted their government to one man for a year at a time, with absolute power over their wholeempire, and this man was obeyed by al without envy or jealousy.	16 Ed ogni qnno commettono ad un solo l’ufficio di governare tutto lo stato, e tutti obbediscono a quel solo, e non v’ è tra loro insidia nè gelosia.
17 Having chosen Eupolemus son of John, of the family of Accos, and Jason son of Eleazar, Judas sentthem to Rome to make a treaty of friendship and al iance with these people,	17 Giuda adunque scelse Eupolemo, figlio di Giovanni figlio di Giacobbe, e Giasone figlio d'Eleazaro, e li mandò a Roma, a far con loro amicizia ed alleanza,
18 in the hope of being rid of the yoke, for they could see that Greek rule was reducing Israel to slavery.	18 e perchè li liberassero dal giogo dei Greci, visto che questi riducevano in servitù il regno di Israele.
19 The envoys made the lengthy journey to Rome and presented themselves before the Senate withtheir formal proposal:	19 Giunsero dunque a Roma, dopo un viaggio lunghissimo, ed entrarono nella curia, e dissero:
20 'Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to conclude a treatyof al iance and peace with you, and to enrol ourselves as your al ies and friends.'	20 « Giuda Maccabeo, ed i suol fratelli, ed il popolo de' Giudei ci hanno mandati a voi, per far con voi alleanza, e scriverci come compagni ed amici vostri ».
21 The proposal met with the approval of the senators.	21 Piacque a loro la proposta.
22 Here is a copy of the rescript which they engraved on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem to be keptthere by the Jews as a record of peace and al iance:	22 Ed ecco il rescritto che essi incisero in tavole di bronzo, e mandarono a Gerusalemme, acciò restasse presso i Giudei come memoriale di pace e d’alleanza.
23 'Good fortune attend the Romans and the Jewish nation by sea and land for ever; may sword orenemy be far from them!	23 «Bene sia a' Romani ed alla nazione Giudea in mare ed in terra, per sempre, e stian lungi da loro la spada e il nemico.
24 'If war comes first to Rome or any of her al ies throughout her dominions,	24 Se avranno guerra per i primi i Romani o i loro alleati in tutto il loro dominio,
25 the Jewish nation wil take action as her al y, as occasion may require, and do it wholeheartedly.	25 la nazione Giudea darà loro aiuto di tutto cuore, come le circostanze permetteranno;
26 They wil not give or supply to the enemy any grain, arms, money or ships: thus has Rome decided,and they are to honour their obligations without guarantees.	26 ed al combattenti non daranno nè somministreranno grano, armi, danaro, navi, perchè così è piaciuto ai Romani; e staranno al loro ordini, senza ricever da loro alcunché.
27 In the same way, if war comes first to the Jewish nation, the Romans wil support them energetical yas occasion may offer,	27 Similmente, se avranno guerra per i primi i Giudei, li aiuteranno di cuore i Romani, secondo che le circostanze lo permetteranno;
28 and the aggressor wil not be furnished with grain, arms, money or ships: such is the Roman decision,and they wil honour these obligations without treachery.	28 ed a questi aiuti non si darà grano, armi, danaro, navi, com’ è piaciuto al Romani, e staranno ai loro ordini, fedelmente.
29 Such are the articles under which the Romans have concluded their treaty with the Jewish people.	29 In questi termini si son accordati i Romani col popolo de' Giudei.
30 If, later, either party should decide to make any addition or deletion, they wil be free to do so, and anysuch addition or deletion wil be binding.	30 Che se, dopo ciò, vorranno gli uni e gli altri aggiungervi o togliervi qualcosa, lo faranno d’accordo, e tutto quello che avranno raggiunto o tolto sarà ratificato ».
31 'As regards the wrongs done to them by King Demetrius, we have written to him in these terms: Whyhave you made your yoke lie heavy on our friends and al ies the Jews?	31 Quanto poi al male fatto a loro dal re Demetrio, gli abbiamo scritto così: « Perchè hai fatto gravare il tuo giogo sul nostri amici ed alleati Giudei?
32 If they appeal against you again, we shal uphold their rights and make war on you by sea and land.'	32 se essi un’altra volta s’appelleranno a noi contro di te, renderemo loro giustizia, e combatteremo con te per mare e per terra ».
