1 Now Judas had heard of the reputation of the Romans: how strong they were, and how wel disposedtowards any who made common cause with them, making a treaty of friendship with anyone who approachedthem.	1 Frattanto Giuda venne a conoscere il nome dei Romani. Come essi, cioè, sono potenti in guerra e sono benevoli verso tutti quelli che si uniscono a loro, stringono amicizia con quanti ricorrono a loro e sono potenti in guerra.
2 (And, indeed, they were extremely powerful.) He had been told of their wars and of their prowessamong the Gauls, whom they had conquered and put under tribute;	2 Gli parlarono pure delle guerre e degli atti di valore da essi compiuti tra i Galati e come li avevano sottomessi e resi tributari.
3 and of al they had done in the province of Spain to gain possession of the silver and gold mines there,	3 Quanto avevano fatto nella regione della Spagna per impadronirsi delle miniere di argento e di oro che vi si trovano
4 making themselves masters of the whole country by their determination and perseverance, despite itsgreat distance from their own; of the kings who came from the ends of the earth to attack them, only to becrushed by them and overwhelmed with disaster, and of others who paid them annual tribute;	4 e come si erano impadroniti di tutta quella regione con la loro prudenza e perseveranza, sebbene il luogo fosse molto distante da loro. Avevano sconfitto e inflitto gravi colpi ai re che erano andati contro di essi fin dall'estremità della terra e avevano costretto gli altri a pagare loro un tributo annuale.
5 Philip, Perseus king of the Kittim, and others who had dared to make war on them, had been defeatedand reduced to subjection,	5 Sconfissero pure in guerra Filippo e Perseo, re dei Chittim, e quanti si erano ribellati, assoggettandoli a sé.
6 while Antiochus the Great, king of Asia, who had advanced to attack them with a hundred and twentyelephants, cavalry, chariots and a very large army, had also suffered defeat at their hands;	6 Anche Antioco il Grande, re dell'Asia, che mosse contro di loro in guerra con centoventi elefanti, cavalleria, carri e un esercito molto grande, fu da essi sconfitto;
7 they had taken him alive and imposed on him and his successors, on agreed terms, the payment of anenormous tribute, the surrender of hostages, and the cession	7 lo catturarono vivo e gli imposero di pagare, lui e i suoi successori, un grande tributo e di consegnare ostaggi, nonché di cedere

12 But where their friends and those who relied on them were concerned, they had always stood by theirfriendship. They had subdued kings far and near, and al who heard their name went in terror of them.	12 Stesero il loro potere su re vicini e lontani, e quanti udivano il loro nome ne avevano timore.
13 One man, if they determined to help him and advance him to a throne, would certainly occupy it, whileanother, if they so determined, would find himself deposed; their influence was paramount.	13 Quelli che essi vogliono aiutare e far regnare, regnano; quelli che essi, invece, non vogliono, li depongono; e così si sono levati molto in alto.
14 In spite of al this, no single one of them had assumed a crown or put on the purple for his ownaggrandisement.	14 Con tutto ciò, neppure uno di essi ha cinto il diadema, né si è rivestito di porpora per grandeggiare.
15 They had set up a senate, where three hundred and twenty councillors deliberated daily, constantlydebating how best to regulate public affairs.	15 Si sono dati invece un consiglio e ogni giorno trecentoventi uomini si consultano continuamente intorno al popolo per il suo buon andamento.
16 They entrusted their government to one man for a year at a time, with absolute power over their wholeempire, and this man was obeyed by al without envy or jealousy.	16 Ogni anno affidano il potere su di sé e il dominio su tutta la loro terra a un solo uomo. Tutti ubbidiscono a questo solo e non vi è tra loro né invidia né gelosia.
17 Having chosen Eupolemus son of John, of the family of Accos, and Jason son of Eleazar, Judas sentthem to Rome to make a treaty of friendship and al iance with these people,	17 Giuda, pertanto, scelse Eupòlemo, figlio di Giovanni, figlio di Accos, e Giasone, figlio di Eleàzaro, e li inviò a Roma per stringere con essi amicizia e alleanza,
18 in the hope of being rid of the yoke, for they could see that Greek rule was reducing Israel to slavery.	18 affinché li liberassero dal giogo dei Greci, vedendo come il loro regno era deciso a ridurre Israele in schiavitù.
19 The envoys made the lengthy journey to Rome and presented themselves before the Senate withtheir formal proposal:	19 Giunsero a Roma dopo un viaggio molto lungo; entrarono nel Senato e, presa la parola, dissero:
20 'Judas Maccabaeus and his brothers, with the Jewish people, have sent us to you to conclude a treatyof al iance and peace with you, and to enrol ourselves as your al ies and friends.'	20 "Giuda, detto Maccabeo, i suoi fratelli e il popolo dei Giudei ci hanno inviato a voi per stabilire con voi alleanza e pace e per essere noi iscritti come vostri alleati e amici".
21 The proposal met with the approval of the senators.	21 Il discorso piacque ai presenti.
22 Here is a copy of the rescript which they engraved on bronze tablets and sent to Jerusalem to be keptthere by the Jews as a record of peace and al iance:	22 Ecco la copia della lettera che essi fecero incidere su tavole di bronzo e che inviarono a Gerusalemme perché vi rimanesse come documento di pace e di alleanza:
23 'Good fortune attend the Romans and the Jewish nation by sea and land for ever; may sword orenemy be far from them!	23 "Sia bene ai Romani e alla nazione dei Giudei, in mare e sulla terra, per sempre! La spada e l'inimicizia siano lontane da essi!
24 'If war comes first to Rome or any of her al ies throughout her dominions,	24 Se sarà mossa guerra per prima ai Romani o a qualunque dei loro alleati in tutto il loro dominio,
25 the Jewish nation wil take action as her al y, as occasion may require, and do it wholeheartedly.	25 la nazione dei Giudei combatterà al loro fianco, come le circostanze permetteranno, con cuore sincero.
26 They wil not give or supply to the enemy any grain, arms, money or ships: thus has Rome decided,and they are to honour their obligations without guarantees.	26 Non doneranno ai nemici né forniranno loro grano, armi, danaro o navi, secondo la decisione di Roma, ma osserveranno i loro impegni senza pretendere nulla.
27 In the same way, if war comes first to the Jewish nation, the Romans wil support them energetical yas occasion may offer,	27 Allo stesso modo se alla nazione dei Giudei per prima sopravverrà una guerra, i Romani di cuore combatteranno al suo fianco come le circostanze permetteranno loro.
28 and the aggressor wil not be furnished with grain, arms, money or ships: such is the Roman decision,and they wil honour these obligations without treachery.	28 Ai nemici non sarà dato né grano né armi né danaro né navi, secondo la decisione di Roma, ma osserveranno questi impegni senza inganno.
29 Such are the articles under which the Romans have concluded their treaty with the Jewish people.	29 E' in questi termini che i Romani hanno stretto alleanza con il popolo dei Giudei.
30 If, later, either party should decide to make any addition or deletion, they wil be free to do so, and anysuch addition or deletion wil be binding.	30 Se dopo di ciò gli uni o gli altri vorranno aggiungere o togliere qualche cosa, lo faranno a loro piacimento e ciò che avranno aggiunto o tolto sarà obbligatorio.
31 'As regards the wrongs done to them by King Demetrius, we have written to him in these terms: Whyhave you made your yoke lie heavy on our friends and al ies the Jews?	31 Riguardo ai mali che il re Demetrio ha loro causato, abbiamo scritto a lui dicendogli: "Perché fai pesare il tuo giogo sui nostri amici e alleati Giudei?
32 If they appeal against you again, we shal uphold their rights and make war on you by sea and land.'	32 Se, dunque, essi interverranno ancora contro di te, renderemo loro giustizia e ti faremo guerra per mare e per terra".
