1 Maccabees 7

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 In the year 151, Demetrius son of Seleucus left Rome and arrived with a few men at a town on thecoast, where he inaugurated his reign.	1 No ano cento e cinqüenta e um, Demétrio, filho de Seleuco, escapou de Roma e, com alguns companheiros, alcançou uma cidade marítima onde se proclamou rei.
2 It so happened that, as he was entering the royal residence of his ancestors, the army capturedAntiochus and Lysias, and intended to bring them to him.	2 Quando ele entrou no palácio real de seus pais, o exército se apoderou de Antíoco e de Lísias para conduzi-los a ele.
3 On hearing this, he said, 'Keep them out of my sight.'	3 Soube-o o rei e disse: Não me mostreis a sua face.
4 The army put them to death, and Demetrius ascended his throne.	4 E o exército os matou, e Demétrio sentou-se no trono que lhe cabia.
5 Next, al those Israelites without law or piety, led by Alcimus, whose ambition was to become highpriest,	5 Todos os traidores e os ímpios de Israel achegaram-se dele sob a chefia de Alcimo, que aspirava tornar-se sumo sacerdote.
6 approached the king and denounced our people to him. 'Judas and his brothers', they said, 'have kil edal your friends, and he has driven us out of our country.	6 Acusaram o povo nestes termos: Judas e seus irmãos mataram todos os teus amigos e nos expulsaram de nosso país.
7 Send someone now whom you can trust; let him go and see the wholesale ruin Judas has brought onus and on the king's dominions, and let him punish the wretches and al who assist them.'	7 Envia portanto, agora, um homem que possua tua confiança e que venha ver em que triste situação nos puseram, a nós e ao país que pertence ao rei, para castigar a eles e a todos os seus partidários.
8 The king chose Bacchides, one of the Friends of the King, governor of Transeuphrates, an importantpersonage in the kingdom and loyal to the king.	8 O rei escolheu Báquides, um de seus amigos, então governador além do rio, um dos grandes do reino e fiel ao rei. Enviou-o
9 He sent him with the godless Alcimus, whom he confirmed in the high priesthood, with orders to exactretribution from the Israelites.	9 com o ímpio Alcimo, a quem destinou o cargo de sumo sacerdote, e deu-lhe ordem de tomar vingança dos filhos de Israel.
10 So they set out with a large force and, on reaching Judaea, sent emissaries to Judas and his brotherswith proposals peaceable yet treacherous.	10 Partiram, pois, e tomaram o caminho do país de Judá com um forte exército, enviando a Judas e seus irmãos palavras de paz capciosas.
11 The latter, however, did not put any faith in their words, aware that they had come with a large force.	11 Vendo-os chegar com numerosas tropas, estes não lhes deram ouvido.
12 Nevertheless, a commission of scribes presented themselves before Alcimus and Bacchides, to suefor just terms.	12 Houve todavia um grupo de escribas que foi ter com Alcimo e Báquides, com palavras de justas reivindicações.
13 The first among the Israelites to ask them for peace terms were the Hasidaeans,	13 Estes assideus, que eram os mais benquistos em Israel, pediam-lhes a paz.
14 who reasoned thus, 'This is a priest of Aaron's line who has come with the armed forces; he wil notwrong us.'	14 Diziam entre si: É um sacerdote da raça de Aarão que vem a nós com exército, ele não nos fará mal algum.
15 He did in fact discuss peace terms with them and gave them his oath, 'We shal not attempt to injureyou or your friends.'	15 Alcimo trocou com eles palavras de paz e lhes jurou: Não faremos mal nem a vós, nem a vossos amigos.
16 They believed him, but he arrested sixty of them and put them to death on one day, fulfil ing the wordsof scripture:	16 Acreditaram neles, mas ele apoderou-se de sessenta deles e mandou-os matar no mesmo dia, conforme estava escrito:
17 They have scattered the bodies of your faithful, and shed their blood all round Jerusalem, leaving noone to bury them!	17 Espalharam a carne e o sangue dos teus santos ao redor de Jerusalém, e não havia ninguém para sepultá- los (Sl 78,3).
18 At this, fear and dread gripped the whole people. 'There is no truth or virtue in them,' they said, 'theyhave broken their agreement and their sworn oath.'	18 O assombro e o terror apoderou-se do povo, porque se dizia: Não há entre eles nem verdade nem justiça, depois que violaram o pacto e o juramento, que haviam confirmado.
19 Bacchides then left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Zeth, and from there sent and arrested many ofthe men who had deserted him and a few of our people too; he had them kil ed and thrown down the great wel .	19 Báquides afastou-se de Jerusalém e instalou seu acampamento em Bezet, onde prendeu e lançou numa grande cisterna muitos desertores de seu exército e algumas pessoas do país.
20 He then put Alcimus in charge of the province, leaving an army with him to support him; Bacchideshimself returned to the king.	20 Confiou a terra nas mãos de Alcimo e, deixando-lhe um exército para socorrê-lo, regressou para junto do rei.
21 Alcimus continued his struggle to become high priest,	21 Entretanto, Alcimo teve que lutar para se impor como sumo sacerdote.
22 and al who were disturbing the peace of their own people ral ied to him, and, having won control ofJudaea, did much harm in Israel.	22 Agrupavam-se ao redor dele todos os perturbadores do povo com os quais ele se tornara senhor da terra de Judá e foi um tempo doloroso para Israel.
23 Seeing that al the wrongs done to the Israelites by Alcimus and his supporters exceeded what thegentiles had done,	23 Judas viu que o mal que Alcimo e seus cúmplices faziam aos filhos de Israel era pior ainda que o mal praticado pelos gentios.
24 Judas went right round the whole territory of Judaea to take vengeance on those who had desertedhim and to prevent their free movement about the country.	24 Por isso percorreu ele toda a terra da Judéia, até as fronteiras, vingando-se dos traidores e impedindo-lhes a volta ao país.
25 When Alcimus saw how strong Judas and his supporters had grown and realised that he waspowerless to resist them, he went back to the king, to whom he made malicious accusations against them.	25 Vendo Alcimo que Judas com os seus eram mais fortes e reconhecendo sua impotência em lhes resistir, refugiou-se junto do rei e acusou-os dos piores crimes.
26 The king sent Nicanor, one of his generals ranking as Il ustrious and a bitter enemy of Israel, withorders to exterminate the people.	26 O rei enviou Nicanor, general eminente, que detestava e odiava Israel, com a ordem de exterminar esse povo.
27 Reaching Jerusalem with a large force, Nicanor sent a friendly, yet treacherous, message to Judasand his brothers, as follows:	27 Nicanor partiu para Jerusalém com um numeroso exército e mandou levar a Judas e a seus irmãos falsas palavras de paz:
28 'Let us have no fighting between you and me; I shall come with a smal escort for a peaceful meetingwith you.'	28 Que não haja guerra entre vós e mim. Chegarei somente com um punhado de homens para te ver, como amigo.
29 He met Judas and they exchanged friendly greetings; the enemy, however, had made preparations toabduct Judas.	29 Com efeito, ele chegou e saudaram-se pacificamente, mas seus soldados se achavam prontos para se lançarem sobre Judas.
30 When Judas became aware of Nicanor's treacherous purpose in coming to see him, he took fright andrefused any further meeting.	30 Todavia, Judas estava a par dos desígnios pérfidos de Nicanor a afastou-se dele, recusando vê-lo de novo.
31 Nicanor then realised that his plan had been discovered, and took the field against Judas, to givebattle near Caphar-Salama.	31 Reconheceu Nicanor que seu projeto fora descoberto e propôs a Judas uma batalha perto de Cafarsalama.
32 About five hundred of Nicanor's men fell; the rest took refuge in the City of David.	32 Foram mortos do seu exército quinhentos homens e o resto fugiu para a cidade de Davi.
33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the Holy Placewith some elders, to give him a friendly welcome and show him the burnt offering being presented for the king.	33 Após o combate, subiu Nicanor a colina de Sião, e sacerdotes saíram do templo com anciãos do povo, para saudá-lo em espírito de paz, e mostrar-lhe o holocausto que se oferecia pelo rei,
34 But he ridiculed them, laughed at them, defiled them and used insolent language, swearing in hisrage,	34 mas ele escarnecia deles, dirigia-lhes mofas, desprezava-os e falava-lhes com desdém,
35 'Unless Judas is handed over to me this time with his army, as soon as I am safely back, I promiseyou, I shal burn this building down!'	35 jurando em sua ira: Se Judas não me for entregue imediatamente com seu exército, afirmo, logo que estabelecer a paz, retornarei e lançarei fogo a esta casa. Partiu depois todo enfurecido.
36 Then he went off in a fury. At this, the priests went in again, and stood weeping in front of the altarand the Temple, saying,	36 Então os sacerdotes entraram, e, em pé diante do altar e do templo, choraram dizendo:
37 'You have chosen this house to be cal ed by your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for yourpeople.	37 Fostes vós que escolhestes esta casa, para que se invoque nela vosso nome e para que ela seja uma casa de súplicas, de orações pelo vosso povo.
38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fal by the sword; remember theirblasphemies and give them no respite.'	38 Tomai vingança desse homem e de seu exército, e que eles caiam sob o golpe da espada. Lembrai-vos de suas blasfêmias e não permitais que eles vivam.
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Horon, where he was joined by an army from Syria.	39 Saiu Nicanor de Jerusalém e acampou em Beteron, onde um exército sírio se lhe ajuntou.
40 Judas, meanwhile, camped at Adasa with three thousand men, and offered this prayer,	40 Judas acampou em Adasa com três mil homens e começou a rezar nestes termos:
41 'When the king's envoys blasphemed, your angel went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men.	41 Quando os soldados enviados pelo rei da Síria vos blasfemaram, apareceu vosso anjo e matou cento e oitenta e cinco mil homens dentre eles.
42 In the same way let us see you crush this army today, so that everyone else may know that this manhas spoken blasphemously against your sanctuary: pass judgement on him as his wickedness deserves!'	42 Do mesmo modo exterminai hoje este exército aos nossos olhos, para que os outros saibam que Nicanor insultou vosso templo, e julgai-o segundo sua perfídia.
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth of the month Adar, and Nicanor's army was crushed, hehimself being the first to fal in the battle.	43 Chocaram-se os exércitos no dia treze do mês de Adar; o de Nicanor foi vencido e ele foi o primeiro a tombar na luta.
44 When Nicanor's soldiers saw him fal , they threw down their arms and fled.	44 Assim que as tropas de Nicanor viram que ele fora morto, largaram as armas e fugiram.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to the approaches of Gezer; they sounded theirtrumpets in warning as they fol owed them,	45 Os judeus perseguiram-nos todo o dia desde Adasa até Gazara e fizeram soar as trombetas dos sinais.
46 and people came out of al the surrounding Judaean vil ages to encircle the fugitives, who then turnedback on their own men. Al fel by the sword, not one being left alive.	46 E saíram então os habitantes de todas as aldeias da Judéia e dos arredores, para cercar os fugitivos. Estes voltaram de encontro a eles e caíram todos sob a espada. E não sobrou nem mesmo um dentre eles.
47 Having col ected the spoils and booty, they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand he had stretchedout in a display of insolence; these were taken and displayed within sight of Jerusalem.	47 Os judeus apoderaram-se de seus despojos e haveres. Cortaram a cabeça de Nicanor e a mão direita que ele orgulhosamente estendera, e suspenderam-nas à vista de Jerusalém.
48 The people were overjoyed and kept that day as a great holiday:	48 Alegrou-se muito o povo que passou aquele dia em grande regozijo.
49 indeed they decided to celebrate it annual y on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 Decidiu-se que esse dia seria celebrado a cada ano no dia treze do mês de Adar.
50 For a short while Judaea enjoyed peace.	50 Após isso, a terra de Judá esteve tranqüila durante algum tempo.
