NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLIA
1 In the year 151, Demetrius son of Seleucus left Rome and arrived with a few men at a town on thecoast, where he inaugurated his reign.	1 El año 151, Demetrio, hijo de Seleuco, salió de Roma y, con unos pocos hombres, arribó a una ciudad marítima donde se proclamó rey.
2 It so happened that, as he was entering the royal residence of his ancestors, the army capturedAntiochus and Lysias, and intended to bring them to him.	2 Cuando se disponía a entrar en la residencia real de sus padres, el ejército apresó a Antíoco y a Lisias para llevarlos a su presencia.
3 On hearing this, he said, 'Keep them out of my sight.'	3 Al saberlo, dijo: «No quiero ver sus caras».
4 The army put them to death, and Demetrius ascended his throne.	4 El ejército los mató y Demetrio se sentó en su trono real.
5 Next, al those Israelites without law or piety, led by Alcimus, whose ambition was to become highpriest,	5 Entonces todos los hombres sin ley e impíos de Israel acudieron a él, con Alcimo al frente, que pretendía el sumo sacerdocio.
6 approached the king and denounced our people to him. 'Judas and his brothers', they said, 'have kil edal your friends, and he has driven us out of our country.	6 Ya en su presencia, acusaron al pueblo diciendo: «Judas y sus hermanos han hecho perecer a todos tus amigos y a nosotros nos han expulsado de nuestro país.
7 Send someone now whom you can trust; let him go and see the wholesale ruin Judas has brought onus and on the king's dominions, and let him punish the wretches and al who assist them.'	7 Envía, pues, ahora una persona de tu confianza, que vaya y vea los estragos que en nosotros y en la provincia del rey han causado, y los castigue a ellos y a todos los que les apoyan».
8 The king chose Bacchides, one of the Friends of the King, governor of Transeuphrates, an importantpersonage in the kingdom and loyal to the king.	8 El rey eligió a Báquides, uno de los amigos del rey, gobernador de Transeufratina, grande en el reino y fiel al rey.
9 He sent him with the godless Alcimus, whom he confirmed in the high priesthood, with orders to exactretribution from the Israelites.	9 Le envió con el impío Alcimo, a quien concedió el sacerdocio, a tomar venganza de los israelitas.
10 So they set out with a large force and, on reaching Judaea, sent emissaries to Judas and his brotherswith proposals peaceable yet treacherous.	10 Partieron con un ejército numeroso y en llegando a la tierra de Judá, enviaron mensajeros a Judas y sus hermanos con falsas proposiciones de paz.
11 The latter, however, did not put any faith in their words, aware that they had come with a large force.	11 Pero éstos no hicieron caso de sus palabras, porque vieron que habían venido con un ejército numeroso.
12 Nevertheless, a commission of scribes presented themselves before Alcimus and Bacchides, to suefor just terms.	12 No obstante, un grupo de escribas se reunió con Alcimo y Báquides, tratando de encontrar una solución justa.
13 The first among the Israelites to ask them for peace terms were the Hasidaeans,	13 Los asideos eran los primeros entre los israelitas en pedirles la paz,
14 who reasoned thus, 'This is a priest of Aaron's line who has come with the armed forces; he wil notwrong us.'	14 pues decían: «Un sacerdote del linaje de Aarón ha venido con el ejército: no nos hará ningún mal».
15 He did in fact discuss peace terms with them and gave them his oath, 'We shal not attempt to injureyou or your friends.'	15 Habló con ellos amistosamente y les aseguró bajo juramento: «No intentaremos haceros mal ni a vosotros ni a vuestros amigos».
16 They believed him, but he arrested sixty of them and put them to death on one day, fulfil ing the wordsof scripture:	16 Le creyeron, pero él prendió a sesenta de ellos y les hizo morir en un mismo día, según la palabra que estaba escrita:
17 They have scattered the bodies of your faithful, and shed their blood all round Jerusalem, leaving noone to bury them!	17 «Esparcieron la carne y la sangre de tus santos en torno a Jerusalén y no hubo quien les diese sepultura».
18 At this, fear and dread gripped the whole people. 'There is no truth or virtue in them,' they said, 'theyhave broken their agreement and their sworn oath.'	18 Con esto, el miedo hacia ellos y el espanto se apoderó del pueblo, que decía: «No hay en ellos verdad ni justicia, pues han violado el pacto y el juramento que habían jurado».
19 Bacchides then left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Zeth, and from there sent and arrested many ofthe men who had deserted him and a few of our people too; he had them kil ed and thrown down the great wel .	19 Báquides partió de Jerusalén y acampó en Bet Zet. De allí mandó a prender a muchos que habían desertado donde él y a algunos del pueblo, los mató y los arrojó en el pozo grande.
20 He then put Alcimus in charge of the province, leaving an army with him to support him; Bacchideshimself returned to the king.	20 Luego puso la provincia en manos de Alcimo, dejó con él tropas que le sostuvieran y se marchó adonde el rey.
21 Alcimus continued his struggle to become high priest,	21 Alcimo luchó por el sumo sacerdocio.
22 and al who were disturbing the peace of their own people ral ied to him, and, having won control ofJudaea, did much harm in Israel.	22 Se le unieron todos los perturbadores del pueblo, se hicieron dueños de la tierra de Judá y causaron graves males a Israel.
23 Seeing that al the wrongs done to the Israelites by Alcimus and his supporters exceeded what thegentiles had done,	23 Viendo Judas todo el daño que Alcimo y los suyos hacían a los hijos de Israel, mayor que el que habían causado los gentiles,
24 Judas went right round the whole territory of Judaea to take vengeance on those who had desertedhim and to prevent their free movement about the country.	24 salió a recorrer todo el territorio de Judea para tomar venganza de los desertores y no dejarles andar por la región.
25 When Alcimus saw how strong Judas and his supporters had grown and realised that he waspowerless to resist them, he went back to the king, to whom he made malicious accusations against them.	25 Al ver Alcimo que Judas y los suyos cobraban fuerza y que él no podía resistirles, se volvió donde el rey y les acusó de graves delitos.
26 The king sent Nicanor, one of his generals ranking as Il ustrious and a bitter enemy of Israel, withorders to exterminate the people.	26 El rey envió a Nicanor, uno de sus generales más distinguidos y enemigo declarado de Israel, y le mandó exterminar al pueblo.
27 Reaching Jerusalem with a large force, Nicanor sent a friendly, yet treacherous, message to Judasand his brothers, as follows:	27 Nicanor llegó a Jerusalén con un ejército numeroso y envió a Judas y sus hermanos un insidioso mensaje de paz diciéndoles:
28 'Let us have no fighting between you and me; I shall come with a smal escort for a peaceful meetingwith you.'	28 «No haya lucha entre vosotros y yo; iré a veros amistosamente con una pequeña escolta».
29 He met Judas and they exchanged friendly greetings; the enemy, however, had made preparations toabduct Judas.	29 Fue pues, donde Judas y ambos se saludaron amistosamente, pero los enemigos estaban preparados para raptar a Judas.
30 When Judas became aware of Nicanor's treacherous purpose in coming to see him, he took fright andrefused any further meeting.	30 Al conocer que había venido a él con engaños, se atemorizó Judas y no quiso verle más.
31 Nicanor then realised that his plan had been discovered, and took the field against Judas, to givebattle near Caphar-Salama.	31 Viendo descubiertos sus planes, Nicanor salió a enfrentarse con Judas cerca de Cafarsalamá.
32 About five hundred of Nicanor's men fell; the rest took refuge in the City of David.	32 Cayeron unos quinientos hombres del ejército de Nicanor y los demás huyeron a la Ciudad de David.
33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the Holy Placewith some elders, to give him a friendly welcome and show him the burnt offering being presented for the king.	33 Después de estos sucesos, subió Nicanor al monte Sión. Salieron del Lugar Santo sacerdotes y ancianos del pueblo para saludarle amistosamente y mostrarle el holocausto que se ofrecía por el rey.
34 But he ridiculed them, laughed at them, defiled them and used insolent language, swearing in hisrage,	34 Pero él se burló de ellos, les escarneció, les mancilló y habló insolentemente.
35 'Unless Judas is handed over to me this time with his army, as soon as I am safely back, I promiseyou, I shal burn this building down!'	35 Colérico, les dijo con juramento: «Si esta vez no se me entrega Judas y su ejército en mis manos, cuando vuelva, hecha la paz, prenderé fuego a esta Casa». Y salió lleno de furor.
36 Then he went off in a fury. At this, the priests went in again, and stood weeping in front of the altarand the Temple, saying,	36 Entraron los sacerdotes y, de pie ante el altar y el santuario, exclamaron llorando:
37 'You have chosen this house to be cal ed by your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for yourpeople.	37 «Tú has elegido esta Casa para que en ella fuese invocado tu nombre y fuese casa de oración y súplica para tu pueblo;
38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fal by the sword; remember theirblasphemies and give them no respite.'	38 toma vengaza de este hombre y de su ejército y caigan bajo la espada. Acuérdate, de sus blasfemias y no les des tregua».
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Horon, where he was joined by an army from Syria.	39 Nicanor partió de Jerusalén y acampó en Bet Jorón, donde se le unió un contingente de Siria.
40 Judas, meanwhile, camped at Adasa with three thousand men, and offered this prayer,	40 Judas acampó en Adasá con 3.000 hombres y oró diciendo:
41 'When the king's envoys blasphemed, your angel went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men.	41 «Cuando los enviados del rey blasfemaron, salió tu ángel y mató a 185.000 de ellos;
42 In the same way let us see you crush this army today, so that everyone else may know that this manhas spoken blasphemously against your sanctuary: pass judgement on him as his wickedness deserves!'	42 destruye también hoy este ejército ante nosotros y reconozcan los que queden que su jefe profirió palabras impías contra tu Lugar Santo; júzgale según su maldad».
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth of the month Adar, and Nicanor's army was crushed, hehimself being the first to fal in the battle.	43 El día trece del mes de Adar trabaron batalla los ejércitos y salió derrotado el de Nicanor. Nicanor cayó el primero en el combate,
44 When Nicanor's soldiers saw him fal , they threw down their arms and fled.	44 y su ejército, al verle caído, arrojó las armas y se dio a la fuga.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to the approaches of Gezer; they sounded theirtrumpets in warning as they fol owed them,	45 Les estuvieron persiguiendo un día entero, desde Adasá hasta llegar a Gázara, dando aviso tras ellos con el sonido de las trompetas.
46 and people came out of al the surrounding Judaean vil ages to encircle the fugitives, who then turnedback on their own men. Al fel by the sword, not one being left alive.	46 Salió gente de todos los pueblos judíos del contorno y, envolviéndoles, les obligaron a volverse los unos sobre los otros. Todos cayeron a espada; no quedó ni uno de ellos.
47 Having col ected the spoils and booty, they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand he had stretchedout in a display of insolence; these were taken and displayed within sight of Jerusalem.	47 Tomaron los despojos y el botín; cortaron la cabeza de Nicanor y su mano derecha, aquella que había extendido insolentemente, y las llevaron para exponerlas a la vista de Jerusalén.
48 The people were overjoyed and kept that day as a great holiday:	48 El pueblo se llenó de gran alegría; celebraron aquel día como un gran día de regocijo
49 indeed they decided to celebrate it annual y on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 y acordaron conmemorarlo cada año el trece de Adar.
50 For a short while Judaea enjoyed peace.	50 El país de Judá gozó de sosiego por algún tiempo.
