1 Maccabees 7

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 In the year 151, Demetrius son of Seleucus left Rome and arrived with a few men at a town on thecoast, where he inaugurated his reign.	1 - L'anno centocinquantuno, Demetrio figlio di Seleuco fuggì da Roma, riparò con pochi uomini in una città di mare, ed ivi si dichiarò re.
2 It so happened that, as he was entering the royal residence of his ancestors, the army capturedAntiochus and Lysias, and intended to bring them to him.	2 Ora avvenne che essendo egli entrato nella regia casa dei padri suoi, l'esercito s'impadronì d'Antioco e di Lisia, e volevan condurglieli.
3 On hearing this, he said, 'Keep them out of my sight.'	3 Riseppe egli la cosa e disse: « Non mi fate vedere la loro faccia ! ».
4 The army put them to death, and Demetrius ascended his throne.	4 L’esercito li mise a morte e Demetrio s’assise sul trono del regno suo.
5 Next, al those Israelites without law or piety, led by Alcimus, whose ambition was to become highpriest,	5 Allora vennero a lui degl’ iniqui ed empii Israeliti, con a capo Alcimo che voleva esser fatto sommo sacerdote;
6 approached the king and denounced our people to him. 'Judas and his brothers', they said, 'have kil edal your friends, and he has driven us out of our country.	6 ed accusarono presso il re il loro popolo, dicendo: « Giuda co' suoi fratelli ha sterminato tutti i tuoi amici, e noi ha scacciati dalla nostra terra.
7 Send someone now whom you can trust; let him go and see the wholesale ruin Judas has brought onus and on the king's dominions, and let him punish the wretches and al who assist them.'	7 Ora dunque, manda un uomo di tua fiducia, che vada a vedere lo sterminio che Giuda ha fatto di noi e de’ paesi del re, e punisca tutti i suoi amici ed i loro fautori ».
8 The king chose Bacchides, one of the Friends of the King, governor of Transeuphrates, an importantpersonage in the kingdom and loyal to the king.	8 Ed il re scelse fra i suol amici Bacchide, che era governatore di là dal fiume, dei grandi del regno, fedele al re,
9 He sent him with the godless Alcimus, whom he confirmed in the high priesthood, with orders to exactretribution from the Israelites.	9 e lo mandò a veder lo sterminio fatto da Giuda. All’empio Alcimo poi stabilì di dare il sacerdozio, e gli commise di vendicarsi sui figli d’Israele.
10 So they set out with a large force and, on reaching Judaea, sent emissaries to Judas and his brotherswith proposals peaceable yet treacherous.	10 Quel due si mossero, e vennero con grand’esercito in Giudea, e mandarono messi a portare a Giuda ed a’suoi fratelli false parole di pace.
11 The latter, however, did not put any faith in their words, aware that they had come with a large force.	11 Ma quelli non si fidarono dei loro discorsi, vedendo che eran venuti con un grande esercito.
12 Nevertheless, a commission of scribes presented themselves before Alcimus and Bacchides, to suefor just terms.	12 Venne anche ad Alcimo e Bacchide un gruppo di scribi, a chiedere quel che era giusto,
13 The first among the Israelites to ask them for peace terms were the Hasidaeans,	13 e primi gli Asidei fra quei figli d'Israele; e chiedevano da loro pace.
14 who reasoned thus, 'This is a priest of Aaron's line who has come with the armed forces; he wil notwrong us.'	14 Dicevano infatti: « È venuto uno che é sacerdote della stirpe d’Aronne; non cl ingannerà ».
15 He did in fact discuss peace terms with them and gave them his oath, 'We shal not attempt to injureyou or your friends.'	15 Alcimo invece ebbe con loro parole di pace, e disse loro con giuramento: « Non faremo alcun male, nè a voi nè al vostri amici ».
16 They believed him, but he arrested sixty of them and put them to death on one day, fulfil ing the wordsof scripture:	16 Quelli gli crederono, ed egli fatti prendere settanta di loro, li uccise tutti in un giorno, come dice la Scrittura:
17 They have scattered the bodies of your faithful, and shed their blood all round Jerusalem, leaving noone to bury them!	17 "Hanno sparso i corpi de' tuoi santi ed il loro sangue intorno a Gerusalemme, e non v’era chi li seppellisse".
18 At this, fear and dread gripped the whole people. 'There is no truth or virtue in them,' they said, 'theyhave broken their agreement and their sworn oath.'	18 Allora il popolo tutto fu preso da timore e tremore, e si diceva: « Non è in loro nè verità nè giustizia, poiché hanno violato la parola data ed il giuramento ».
19 Bacchides then left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Zeth, and from there sent and arrested many ofthe men who had deserted him and a few of our people too; he had them kil ed and thrown down the great wel .	19 Ma Bacchide levò il campo da Gerusalemme, e lo trasportò a Betzeca; poi, fece prendere molti di quelli che avevano abbandonato il suo partito, e con altri del popolo li fece uccidere e gettare nella gran cisterna.
20 He then put Alcimus in charge of the province, leaving an army with him to support him; Bacchideshimself returned to the king.	20 Quindi affidò il paese ad Alcimo, lasciandogli un presidio a sua difesa, e se ne tornò al re.
21 Alcimus continued his struggle to become high priest,	21 Alcimo poi s'affannava dietro al suo pontificato;
22 and al who were disturbing the peace of their own people ral ied to him, and, having won control ofJudaea, did much harm in Israel.	22 e vennero a lui tutti quelli che tenevano in agitazione il loro popolo facendo da padroni nella terra di Giuda, e furono una gran calamità per Israele.
23 Seeing that al the wrongs done to the Israelites by Alcimus and his supporters exceeded what thegentiles had done,	23 Giuda pertanto conobbe tutto il male che al popolo d'Israele avevano arrecato Alcimo ed i suoi, molto più che i pagani,
24 Judas went right round the whole territory of Judaea to take vengeance on those who had desertedhim and to prevent their free movement about the country.	24 e si mise in giro entro tutti i confini della Giudea, facendo man bassa sui disertori, così che cessarono di fare incursioni per il paese.
25 When Alcimus saw how strong Judas and his supporters had grown and realised that he waspowerless to resist them, he went back to the king, to whom he made malicious accusations against them.	25 Alcimo allora vide che Giuda co' suoi aveva preso il sopravvento, e sentì di non potergli far fronte. Fece dunque ritorno al re, e li accusò di molti delitti.
26 The king sent Nicanor, one of his generals ranking as Il ustrious and a bitter enemy of Israel, withorders to exterminate the people.	26 Allora il re mandò Nicànore, uno de * suoi principi più distinti, che l'avevà a morte con Israele, e gli commise di sterminare quel popolo.
27 Reaching Jerusalem with a large force, Nicanor sent a friendly, yet treacherous, message to Judasand his brothers, as follows:	27 Venne dunque Nicànore a Gerusalemme con un grande esercito, e mandò a dire a Giuda ed ai suoi fratelli con false parole di pace:
28 'Let us have no fighting between you and me; I shall come with a smal escort for a peaceful meetingwith you.'	28 « Non cl sia guerra fra me e voi; lo verrò con pochi uomini, per visitarvi da amico ».
29 He met Judas and they exchanged friendly greetings; the enemy, however, had made preparations toabduct Judas.	29 Venne dunque a Giuda, e si salutaron l’un l'altro amichevolmente; ma i nemici stavano pronti per rapir Giuda.
30 When Judas became aware of Nicanor's treacherous purpose in coming to see him, he took fright andrefused any further meeting.	30 Questi però fu avvertito che essi eran venuti a lui con inganno, e n'ebbe paura, e non volle più vedere Nicànore.
31 Nicanor then realised that his plan had been discovered, and took the field against Judas, to givebattle near Caphar-Salama.	31 Il quale, come seppe che il suo piano era stato scoperto uscì contro Giuda a battaglia presso Cafarsalama.
32 About five hundred of Nicanor's men fell; the rest took refuge in the City of David.	32 Caddero dell'esercito di Nicànore quasi cinquemila uomini, e gli altri fuggirono nella città di David.
33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the Holy Placewith some elders, to give him a friendly welcome and show him the burnt offering being presented for the king.	33 Dopo questi fatti, Nicanore salì al monte di Sion; ed alcuni sacerdoti del popolo uscirono a salutarlo amichevolmente, ed a mostrargli i sacrifizi che s'offrivano per il re.
34 But he ridiculed them, laughed at them, defiled them and used insolent language, swearing in hisrage,	34 Ma egli deridendoli li disprezzò e li profanò, e rispose superbamente,
35 'Unless Judas is handed over to me this time with his army, as soon as I am safely back, I promiseyou, I shal burn this building down!'	35 giurando con rabbia: « Se Giuda ed il suo esercito non mi vengono consegnati all'istante, io, quando ritornerò vittorioso, darò questo tempio alle fiamme ». E partì con gran sdegno.
36 Then he went off in a fury. At this, the priests went in again, and stood weeping in front of the altarand the Temple, saying,	36 Allora vennero i sacerdoti, e si posero innanzi all'altare ed al tempio, e piangendo dissero:
37 'You have chosen this house to be cal ed by your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for yourpeople.	37 « Signore, tu hai scelto questa casa perchè vi s'invocasse il tuo nome, e fosse casa d’orazione e d'impetrazione per il tuo popolo;
38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fal by the sword; remember theirblasphemies and give them no respite.'	38 castiga quest’uomo ed il suo esercito, e cadano sotto la spada. Ricordati delle loro bestemmie, e non permettere che durino ».
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Horon, where he was joined by an army from Syria.	39 Uscì dunque Nicànore da Gerusalemme, fermò il campo a Betoron, e gli s'aggiunse l’esercito di Siria.
40 Judas, meanwhile, camped at Adasa with three thousand men, and offered this prayer,	40 Giuda poi s'accampò in Adaraa con tremila uomini, e pregava dicendo:
41 'When the king's envoys blasphemed, your angel went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men.	41 « Signore, quando i messi del re Sennacherib tl bestemmiarono, venne un angelo, e ne colpì a morte centottantacinquemila.
42 In the same way let us see you crush this army today, so that everyone else may know that this manhas spoken blasphemously against your sanctuary: pass judgement on him as his wickedness deserves!'	42 Similmente, annienta tu oggi sotto i nostri occhi quest'esercito; e sappiano gli altri ch’egli ha bestemmiato il tuo santuario, e tu giudicalo secondo la sua malizia ».
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth of the month Adar, and Nicanor's army was crushed, hehimself being the first to fal in the battle.	43 Vennero dunque a battaglia gli eserciti al tredici del mese Adar, e le schiere di Nicànore furono disfatte, e morì egli pel primo sul campo.
44 When Nicanor's soldiers saw him fal , they threw down their arms and fled.	44 Quando il suo esercito seppe che Nicànore era caduto gettaron via le armi, e fuggirono.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to the approaches of Gezer; they sounded theirtrumpets in warning as they fol owed them,	45 Ed i Giudei li inseguirono per tutta una giornata, da Adazer sino a che al giunge in Gazara; e intanto che correvano dietro a loro davano dei segnali con le trombe.
46 and people came out of al the surrounding Judaean vil ages to encircle the fugitives, who then turnedback on their own men. Al fel by the sword, not one being left alive.	46 Così, da tutti i castelli di Giuda all'intorno usciva gente che l'assaliva e li circondava, e quelli si rivoltavano verso i sopravvenienti, e così caddero tutti sotto le spade, e non ne scampò nemmen uno.
47 Having col ected the spoils and booty, they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand he had stretchedout in a display of insolence; these were taken and displayed within sight of Jerusalem.	47 I Giudei presero come preda le loro spoglie, e tagliarono il capo e la destra di Nicànore e la portarono e l'appesero davanti a Gerusalemme.
48 The people were overjoyed and kept that day as a great holiday:	48 E il popolo fece gran festa, e passarono quel giorno in grande allegrezza.
49 indeed they decided to celebrate it annual y on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 E Giuda stabilì che ogni anno si festeggiasse quel giorno, al tredici del mese di Adar.
50 For a short while Judaea enjoyed peace.	50 E la terra di Giuda, per un po’ di tempo ebbe pace.
