1 Maccabees 7

NEW JERUSALEM	LA SACRA BIBBIA
1 In the year 151, Demetrius son of Seleucus left Rome and arrived with a few men at a town on thecoast, where he inaugurated his reign.	1 L'anno 151 Demetrio, figlio di Seleuco, scappò da Roma, s'imbarcò con pochi uomini verso una città costiera e incominciò a regnare.
2 It so happened that, as he was entering the royal residence of his ancestors, the army capturedAntiochus and Lysias, and intended to bring them to him.	2 Quando Antioco raggiunse il palazzo reale dei suoi padri, le truppe catturarono lui e Lisia per condurglieli.
3 On hearing this, he said, 'Keep them out of my sight.'	3 Ma egli, conosciuto il fatto, disse: "Non fatemi vedere la loro faccia".
4 The army put them to death, and Demetrius ascended his throne.	4 Le truppe perciò li uccisero e così Demetrio si assise sul trono del suo regno.
5 Next, al those Israelites without law or piety, led by Alcimus, whose ambition was to become highpriest,	5 Allora vennero da lui tutti gli uomini iniqui ed empi d'Israele, con a capo Alcimo che voleva diventare sommo sacerdote,
6 approached the king and denounced our people to him. 'Judas and his brothers', they said, 'have kil edal your friends, and he has driven us out of our country.	6 e cominciarono ad accusare il popolo presso il re dicendo: "Giuda con i suoi fratelli ha fatto perire tutti i tuoi amici e ha cacciato noi dalla nostra terra.
7 Send someone now whom you can trust; let him go and see the wholesale ruin Judas has brought onus and on the king's dominions, and let him punish the wretches and al who assist them.'	7 Ora manda un uomo fidato perché vada a vedere quanto danno egli ha fatto a noi e alla regione del re e a punire quella gente con tutti quelli che li aiutano".
8 The king chose Bacchides, one of the Friends of the King, governor of Transeuphrates, an importantpersonage in the kingdom and loyal to the king.	8 Il re scelse Bàcchide, uno degli amici del re, governatore della regione al di là del fiume, grande del regno e fedele al re.
9 He sent him with the godless Alcimus, whom he confirmed in the high priesthood, with orders to exactretribution from the Israelites.	9 Lo inviò insieme all'empio Alcimo, a cui conferì il sommo sacerdozio e gli comandò di far vendetta contro i figli d'Israele.
10 So they set out with a large force and, on reaching Judaea, sent emissaries to Judas and his brotherswith proposals peaceable yet treacherous.	10 Costoro partirono con un grande esercito e vennero nella terra di Giuda. Inviarono messaggeri a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli con false parole di pace.
11 The latter, however, did not put any faith in their words, aware that they had come with a large force.	11 Ma questi non si fidarono dei loro discorsi. Vedevano, infatti, che erano venuti con un grosso esercito.
12 Nevertheless, a commission of scribes presented themselves before Alcimus and Bacchides, to suefor just terms.	12 Un gruppo di scribi, tuttavia, si radunò presso Alcimo e Bàcchide per chiedere dei patti giusti.
13 The first among the Israelites to ask them for peace terms were the Hasidaeans,	13 Gli Asidei furono i primi tra i figli d'Israele a chiedere loro la pace.

15 He did in fact discuss peace terms with them and gave them his oath, 'We shal not attempt to injureyou or your friends.'	15 Egli fece con loro discorsi pacifici e giurò pure dicendo: "Non cercheremo di farvi del male, né a voi né ai vostri amici".
16 They believed him, but he arrested sixty of them and put them to death on one day, fulfil ing the wordsof scripture:	16 Gli credettero: ma egli fece arrestare tra loro sessanta uomini e li uccise in un sol giorno, conformemente alla parola che è scritta:
17 They have scattered the bodies of your faithful, and shed their blood all round Jerusalem, leaving noone to bury them!	17 "Le carni dei tuoi santi e il loro sangue sparsero intorno a Gerusalemme e non vi era chi li seppellisse".
18 At this, fear and dread gripped the whole people. 'There is no truth or virtue in them,' they said, 'theyhave broken their agreement and their sworn oath.'	18 Allora il timore di loro e il terrore si impadronì di tutto il popolo. Si diceva: "Non vi è tra costoro né verità né giustizia. Infatti hanno violato il patto e il giuramento prestato".
19 Bacchides then left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Zeth, and from there sent and arrested many ofthe men who had deserted him and a few of our people too; he had them kil ed and thrown down the great wel .	19 Bàcchide poi partì da Gerusalemme e venne ad accamparsi a Bet-Zait. Mandò ad arrestare molti degli uomini che erano passati dalla sua stessa parte, nonché alcuni del popolo e li fece sparire in un grande pozzo.
20 He then put Alcimus in charge of the province, leaving an army with him to support him; Bacchideshimself returned to the king.	20 Affidò la regione ad Alcimo e lasciò con lui un esercito per sostenerlo. Quindi Bàcchide se ne tornò dal re,
21 Alcimus continued his struggle to become high priest,	21 mentre Alcimo rimase a lottare per il sommo sacerdozio.
22 and al who were disturbing the peace of their own people ral ied to him, and, having won control ofJudaea, did much harm in Israel.	22 Tutti i perturbatori del popolo si unirono a lui, si impadronirono della terra di Giuda e produssero una grande calamità in Israele.
23 Seeing that al the wrongs done to the Israelites by Alcimus and his supporters exceeded what thegentiles had done,	23 Giuda vide tutto il male che faceva Alcimo con i suoi ai figli d'Israele, superiore a quello dei gentili,
24 Judas went right round the whole territory of Judaea to take vengeance on those who had desertedhim and to prevent their free movement about the country.	24 percorse tutto il territorio della Giudea per far vendetta sui disertori, impedendo loro di far scorrerie nella regione.
25 When Alcimus saw how strong Judas and his supporters had grown and realised that he waspowerless to resist them, he went back to the king, to whom he made malicious accusations against them.	25 Quando Alcimo vide che Giuda con i suoi aveva il sopravvento ed egli non poteva resistergli, tornò anch'egli dal re e li accusò di cose malvagie.
26 The king sent Nicanor, one of his generals ranking as Il ustrious and a bitter enemy of Israel, withorders to exterminate the people.	26 Allora il re inviò Nicànore, uno dei suoi più illustri generali, che odiava e detestava Israele, ordinandogli di sterminare il popolo.
27 Reaching Jerusalem with a large force, Nicanor sent a friendly, yet treacherous, message to Judasand his brothers, as follows:	27 Nicànore venne a Gerusalemme con un grosso esercito e mandò alcuni da Giuda e dai suoi fratelli, con false parole di pace, per fargli dire:
28 'Let us have no fighting between you and me; I shall come with a smal escort for a peaceful meetingwith you.'	28 "Non vi sia guerra tra me e voi. Verrò con pochi uomini per incontrarvi in modo pacifico".
29 He met Judas and they exchanged friendly greetings; the enemy, however, had made preparations toabduct Judas.	29 Venne, infatti, da Giuda e si salutarono scambievolmente in modo amichevole, mentre i nemici stavano preparati per rapire Giuda.
30 When Judas became aware of Nicanor's treacherous purpose in coming to see him, he took fright andrefused any further meeting.	30 Giuda però si accorse del fatto che quello era venuto da lui con inganno, ne rimase spaventato e non volle più vedere la sua faccia.
31 Nicanor then realised that his plan had been discovered, and took the field against Judas, to givebattle near Caphar-Salama.	31 Nicànore, allora, come vide che il suo disegno era stato scoperto, uscì per combattere contro Giuda a Cafarsalama,
32 About five hundred of Nicanor's men fell; the rest took refuge in the City of David.	32 dove dalla parte di Nicànore caddero cinquecento uomini e gli altri si rifugiarono nella Città di Davide.
33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the Holy Placewith some elders, to give him a friendly welcome and show him the burnt offering being presented for the king.	33 Dopo questi fatti Nicànore salì al monte Sion e alcuni sacerdoti e anziani del popolo uscirono dal santuario per salutarlo amichevolmente e per mostrargli il sacrificio che veniva offerto per il re.
34 But he ridiculed them, laughed at them, defiled them and used insolent language, swearing in hisrage,	34 Ma egli li schernì, ridendo di loro, oltraggiandoli e pronunziando parole insolenti.
35 'Unless Judas is handed over to me this time with his army, as soon as I am safely back, I promiseyou, I shal burn this building down!'	35 Adirato, fece pure questo giuramento: "Se Giuda non viene consegnato subito nelle mie mani insieme al suo esercito, quando ritornerò vittorioso brucerò questo tempio". E se ne uscì con grande furore.
36 Then he went off in a fury. At this, the priests went in again, and stood weeping in front of the altarand the Temple, saying,	36 I sacerdoti, allora, rientrarono e andarono a porsi davanti all'altare e al tempio piangendo e dicendo:
37 'You have chosen this house to be cal ed by your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for yourpeople.	37 "Tu hai scelto questa casa perché sopra di essa fosse invocato il tuo nome, affinché fosse casa di preghiera e di implorazione per il tuo popolo.
38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fal by the sword; remember theirblasphemies and give them no respite.'	38 Fa', dunque, vendetta su quest'uomo e sul suo esercito e periscano di spada! Ricordati delle loro bestemmie e non concedere loro riposo!".
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Horon, where he was joined by an army from Syria.	39 Nicànore uscì da Gerusalemme e andò ad accamparsi a Bet-Oron, dove gli andò incontro un esercito di Siria.
40 Judas, meanwhile, camped at Adasa with three thousand men, and offered this prayer,	40 Giuda si accampò ad Adasa con tremila uomini e pregò:
41 'When the king's envoys blasphemed, your angel went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men.	41 "Quando i messi del re assiro bestemmiarono, uscì il tuo angelo e ne abbatté centottantacinquemila.
42 In the same way let us see you crush this army today, so that everyone else may know that this manhas spoken blasphemously against your sanctuary: pass judgement on him as his wickedness deserves!'	42 Allo stesso modo abbatti questo esercito che ci sta davanti, affinché gli altri sappiano che egli ha parlato empiamente contro il tuo santuario e giudicalo secondo la sua malvagità!".
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth of the month Adar, and Nicanor's army was crushed, hehimself being the first to fal in the battle.	43 Gli eserciti attaccarono battaglia il 13 del mese di Adar. L'esercito di Nicànore però fu sconfitto ed egli stesso cadde per primo nel combattimento.
44 When Nicanor's soldiers saw him fal , they threw down their arms and fled.	44 Quando il suo esercito vide che Nicànore era caduto, gettarono le armi e fuggirono.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to the approaches of Gezer; they sounded theirtrumpets in warning as they fol owed them,	45 I Giudei da Adasa li inseguirono fino a Ghezer, suonando dietro loro le trombe d'allarme.
46 and people came out of al the surrounding Judaean vil ages to encircle the fugitives, who then turnedback on their own men. Al fel by the sword, not one being left alive.	46 Uscirono, allora, uomini da tutti i villaggi che si trovavano all'intorno, li accerchiarono e li fecero rivoltare gli uni contro gli altri. Così caddero tutti a fil di spada e non ne rimase neppure uno.
47 Having col ected the spoils and booty, they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand he had stretchedout in a display of insolence; these were taken and displayed within sight of Jerusalem.	47 Presero le loro spoglie e il bottino, mozzarono la testa di Nicànore e la sua destra, che egli aveva stesa arrogantemente, e le portarono e sospesero presso Gerusalemme.
48 The people were overjoyed and kept that day as a great holiday:	48 Il popolo se ne rallegrò grandemente e fecero di quel giorno un grande giorno di allegrezza.
49 indeed they decided to celebrate it annual y on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 Poi stabilirono di celebrare ogni anno quel giorno il 13 di Adar.
50 For a short while Judaea enjoyed peace.	50 Così la terra di Giuda per un po' di tempo rimase tranquilla.
