1 Maccabees 7

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 In the year 151, Demetrius son of Seleucus left Rome and arrived with a few men at a town on thecoast, where he inaugurated his reign.	1 El año ciento cincuenta y uno, Demetrio, hijo de Seleuco, salió de Roma y llegó con unos pocos hombres a una ciudad marítima, donde se proclamó rey.
2 It so happened that, as he was entering the royal residence of his ancestors, the army capturedAntiochus and Lysias, and intended to bring them to him.	2 Cuando se disponía a entrar en el palacio de sus padres, el ejército apresó a Antíoco y a Lisias para hacerlos comparecer ante él.
3 On hearing this, he said, 'Keep them out of my sight.'	3 Apenas se enteró, dijo: «No quiero ni verles la cara».
4 The army put them to death, and Demetrius ascended his throne.	4 Entonces el ejército los mató y Demetrio ocupó su trono real.
5 Next, al those Israelites without law or piety, led by Alcimus, whose ambition was to become highpriest,	5 Todos los israelitas renegados e impíos acudieron a él, guiados por Alcimo, que ambicionaba el sumo sacerdocio.
6 approached the king and denounced our people to him. 'Judas and his brothers', they said, 'have kil edal your friends, and he has driven us out of our country.	6 Ellos acusaron al pueblo delante del rey, diciendo: «Judas y sus hermanos han eliminado a todos tus adictos y a nosotros nos han expulsado de nuestro país.
7 Send someone now whom you can trust; let him go and see the wholesale ruin Judas has brought onus and on the king's dominions, and let him punish the wretches and al who assist them.'	7 Por eso, manda ahora a una persona de tu confianza, para que vea los estragos que nos han causado a nosotros y a todo el territorio del rey, y los castigue a ellos y a todos los que los apoyan».
8 The king chose Bacchides, one of the Friends of the King, governor of Transeuphrates, an importantpersonage in the kingdom and loyal to the king.	8 El rey eligió a Báquides, uno de sus Amigos, que gobernaba la región occidental del Eufrates; este era un personaje importante en la corte y leal al rey.
9 He sent him with the godless Alcimus, whom he confirmed in the high priesthood, with orders to exactretribution from the Israelites.	9 Lo envió junto con el impío Alcimo, a quien confirió el sumo sacerdocio, y le dio la orden de tomar represalias contra los israelitas.
10 So they set out with a large force and, on reaching Judaea, sent emissaries to Judas and his brotherswith proposals peaceable yet treacherous.	10 Ellos partieron con un ejército numeroso y, al llegar al territorio de Judá, enviaron mensajeros a Judas y a sus hermanos con falsas propuestas de paz.
11 The latter, however, did not put any faith in their words, aware that they had come with a large force.	11 Pero estos, viendo que habían venido con un ejército tan numeroso, no dieron crédito a sus palabras.
12 Nevertheless, a commission of scribes presented themselves before Alcimus and Bacchides, to suefor just terms.	12 Sin embargo, un grupo de escribas se reunió con Alcimo y Báquides, tratando de encontrar una solución satisfactoria.
13 The first among the Israelites to ask them for peace terms were the Hasidaeans,	13 Entre los israelitas, los asideos eran los primeros en pedir la paz,
14 who reasoned thus, 'This is a priest of Aaron's line who has come with the armed forces; he wil notwrong us.'	14 porque decían: «El que ha venido con el ejército es un sacerdote de la familia de Aarón: él no nos va a traicionar».
15 He did in fact discuss peace terms with them and gave them his oath, 'We shal not attempt to injureyou or your friends.'	15 Báquides les habló amistosamente y les aseguró bajo juramento: «No vamos a hacerles ningún mal, ni a ustedes ni a sus amigos».
16 They believed him, but he arrested sixty of them and put them to death on one day, fulfil ing the wordsof scripture:	16 Ellos le creyeron, pero él hizo apresar y ejecutar a sesenta de ellos en un solo día, conforme a la palabra que estaba escrita:
17 They have scattered the bodies of your faithful, and shed their blood all round Jerusalem, leaving noone to bury them!	17 «Desparramaron los cadáveres y la sangre de tus fieles alrededor de Jerusalén y nadie les daba sepultura».
18 At this, fear and dread gripped the whole people. 'There is no truth or virtue in them,' they said, 'theyhave broken their agreement and their sworn oath.'	18 A causa de esto, cundió el pánico en toda la población, y decían: «No hay en ellos verdad ni justicia, porque han violado el compromiso y el juramento que habían hecho».
19 Bacchides then left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Zeth, and from there sent and arrested many ofthe men who had deserted him and a few of our people too; he had them kil ed and thrown down the great wel .	19 Después, Báquides partió de Jerusalén, acampó en Betzet y mandó apresar a muchos que se habían puesto de su parte y a algunos del pueblo; los degolló y los arrojó en una gran cisterna.
20 He then put Alcimus in charge of the province, leaving an army with him to support him; Bacchideshimself returned to the king.	20 Luego puso la provincia en manos de Alcimo, dejando un destacamento a su disposición, y regresó adonde estaba el rey.
21 Alcimus continued his struggle to become high priest,	21 Alcimo luchó por mantenerse en el sumo sacerdocio,
22 and al who were disturbing the peace of their own people ral ied to him, and, having won control ofJudaea, did much harm in Israel.	22 y se unieron a el todos los que perturbaban al pueblo: así se hicieron dueños de Judá y causaron un daño tremendo a Israel.
23 Seeing that al the wrongs done to the Israelites by Alcimus and his supporters exceeded what thegentiles had done,	23 Judas, al ver que Alcimo y sus secuaces hacían a los israelitas más daño que los paganos,
24 Judas went right round the whole territory of Judaea to take vengeance on those who had desertedhim and to prevent their free movement about the country.	24 salió a recorrer todo el territorio de Judea para vengarse de los desertores y no dejarlo circular por la región.
25 When Alcimus saw how strong Judas and his supporters had grown and realised that he waspowerless to resist them, he went back to the king, to whom he made malicious accusations against them.	25 Cuando Alcimo vio que Judas y sus partidarios se fortalecían y que él no podría resistirles, acudió al rey y los acusó de graves delitos.
26 The king sent Nicanor, one of his generals ranking as Il ustrious and a bitter enemy of Israel, withorders to exterminate the people.	26 El rey envió entonces a Nicanor, uno de sus generales más distinguidos y enemigo acérrimo de Israel, con la orden expresa de exterminar al pueblo.
27 Reaching Jerusalem with a large force, Nicanor sent a friendly, yet treacherous, message to Judasand his brothers, as follows:	27 Nicanor llegó a Jerusalén con un gran ejército, y envió a Judas y sus hermanos un falso mensaje de paz, diciéndoles:
28 'Let us have no fighting between you and me; I shall come with a smal escort for a peaceful meetingwith you.'	28 «No nos hagamos la guerra; iré a entrevistarlos en son del paz con una pequeña escolta».
29 He met Judas and they exchanged friendly greetings; the enemy, however, had made preparations toabduct Judas.	29 Cuando se presentó ante Judas, ambos se saludaron amistosamente, pero los enemigos estaban preparados para secuestrar a Judas.
30 When Judas became aware of Nicanor's treacherous purpose in coming to see him, he took fright andrefused any further meeting.	30 Este, al darse cuenta de que Nicanor había venido con pérfidas intenciones, tuvo miedo de él y no quiso verlo más.
31 Nicanor then realised that his plan had been discovered, and took the field against Judas, to givebattle near Caphar-Salama.	31 Entonces Nicanor comprendió que sus planes habían sido descubiertos y salió a combatir contra Judas cerca de Cafarsalamá.
32 About five hundred of Nicanor's men fell; the rest took refuge in the City of David.	32 Allí cayeron unos quinientos hombres del ejército de Nicanor, y los demás huyeron a la Ciudad de David.
33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the Holy Placewith some elders, to give him a friendly welcome and show him the burnt offering being presented for the king.	33 Después de esto, Nicanor subió al monte Sión. Algunos sacerdotes y ancianos del pueblo salieron del Santuario para saludarlo amistosamente y mostrarle el holocausto que se ofrecía por el rey.
34 But he ridiculed them, laughed at them, defiled them and used insolent language, swearing in hisrage,	34 Pero él se burló de ellos con desprecio, los ultrajó y les habló insolentemente.
35 'Unless Judas is handed over to me this time with his army, as soon as I am safely back, I promiseyou, I shal burn this building down!'	35 Después, juró muy enojado: «Si no me entregan ahora mismo a Judas y a su ejército, cuando vuelva victorioso, prenderé fuego a esta Casa». Y salió enfurecido.
36 Then he went off in a fury. At this, the priests went in again, and stood weeping in front of the altarand the Temple, saying,	36 Los sacerdotes entraron al Santuario, y de pie ante el altar y el Templo, exclamaron llorando:
37 'You have chosen this house to be cal ed by your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for yourpeople.	37 «Tú has elegido esta Casa, que es llamada con tu Nombre, a fin de que fuera una casa de oración y de súplica para tu pueblo.
38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fal by the sword; remember theirblasphemies and give them no respite.'	38 Dales su merecido a este hombre y a su ejército, y que caigan al filo de la espada. Acuérdate de sus blasfemias y no les des tregua».
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Horon, where he was joined by an army from Syria.	39 Nicanor partió de Jerusalén y acampó en Betjorón, donde se le unió un contingente de Siria.
40 Judas, meanwhile, camped at Adasa with three thousand men, and offered this prayer,	40 Judas, por su parte, acampó en Adasa con tres mil hombres, e hizo esta oración:
41 'When the king's envoys blasphemed, your angel went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men.	41 «Cuando los enviados del rey blasfemaron, apareció tu Angel y exterminó a ciento ochenta y cinco mil de ellos.
42 In the same way let us see you crush this army today, so that everyone else may know that this manhas spoken blasphemously against your sanctuary: pass judgement on him as his wickedness deserves!'	42 Así también, destruye hoy ante nosotros a este ejército, para que los demás reconozcan que su jefe blasfemó contra tu Santuario, y júzgalo conforme a su maldad».
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth of the month Adar, and Nicanor's army was crushed, hehimself being the first to fal in the battle.	43 El día trece del mes de Adar, los ejércitos entraron en combate y el de Nicanor fue desbaratado. El primero en caer fue el mismo Nicanor,
44 When Nicanor's soldiers saw him fal , they threw down their arms and fled.	44 y cuando los soldados vieron que había caído, tiraron las armas y huyeron.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to the approaches of Gezer; they sounded theirtrumpets in warning as they fol owed them,	45 Los israelitas los persiguieron durante todo un día, desde Adasa hasta las proximidades de Gázara, tocando detrás de ellos las trompetas de alarma.
46 and people came out of al the surrounding Judaean vil ages to encircle the fugitives, who then turnedback on their own men. Al fel by the sword, not one being left alive.	46 De todas las poblaciones judías de los alrededores salía gente que los fue envolviendo, hasta obligarlos a volverse unos contra otros.
47 Having col ected the spoils and booty, they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand he had stretchedout in a display of insolence; these were taken and displayed within sight of Jerusalem.	47 Así cayeron todos al filo de la espada, y no quedó ni uno solo. Los judíos se apoderaron de los despojos y del botín, y cortaron la cabeza de Nicanor y su mano derecha, que él había levantado con prepotencia. Luego las llevaron y las colgaron a la entrada de Jerusalén.
48 The people were overjoyed and kept that day as a great holiday:	48 El pueblo se llenó de alegría; todos celebraron ese día como una gran fiesta
49 indeed they decided to celebrate it annual y on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 y determinaron conmemorar cada año aquel día, trece de Adar.
50 For a short while Judaea enjoyed peace.	50 Y el país de Judá gozó de paz durante algún tiempo.
