1 In the year 151, Demetrius son of Seleucus left Rome and arrived with a few men at a town on thecoast, where he inaugurated his reign.	1 L'anno cento cinquant'uno, Demetrio figliuolo di Seleuco partì da Roma, e giunse con poca comitiva ad una città marittima, e ivi cominciò a regnare.
2 It so happened that, as he was entering the royal residence of his ancestors, the army capturedAntiochus and Lysias, and intended to bring them to him.	2 E appena fu egli entrato nel regno dei padri suoi, l'esercito messe le mani addosso ad Antioco e a Lisia, e li menarono a lui.
3 On hearing this, he said, 'Keep them out of my sight.'	3 Lo che avendo egli inteso, disse: Fate che io non li vegga in faccia.
4 The army put them to death, and Demetrius ascended his throne.	4 E i soldati gli uccisero, e Demetrio si assise sul trono del suo regno.
5 Next, al those Israelites without law or piety, led by Alcimus, whose ambition was to become highpriest,	5 E alcuni uomini malvagi ed empi d'Israele andarono a lui, capo de' quali era Alcimo, che voleva essere sommo Sacerdote.
6 approached the king and denounced our people to him. 'Judas and his brothers', they said, 'have kil edal your friends, and he has driven us out of our country.	6 E accusarono la loro nazione presso al re dicendo: Giuda e i suoi fratelli hanno strapazzati tutti i tuoi amici, e noi hanno discacciati dal nostro paese.
7 Send someone now whom you can trust; let him go and see the wholesale ruin Judas has brought onus and on the king's dominions, and let him punish the wretches and al who assist them.'	7 Ora tu manda una persona fidata, che vada a riconoscere tutti gli strapazzi, che quegli ha fatto a noi e alle provincie del re, e punisca tutti gli amici di lui e i loro fautori.
8 The king chose Bacchides, one of the Friends of the King, governor of Transeuphrates, an importantpersonage in the kingdom and loyal to the king.	8 E il re scelse tra' suoi amici Bacchide, il quale governava la parte del regno di la dal fiume grande, e di cui il re si fidava, e lui spedì,
9 He sent him with the godless Alcimus, whom he confirmed in the high priesthood, with orders to exactretribution from the Israelites.	9 A riconoscere le vessazioni fatte da Giuda: e oltre a ciò all'empio Alcimo diede il sommo pontificato, e comandogli che gastigasse i figliuoli d'Israele.
10 So they set out with a large force and, on reaching Judaea, sent emissaries to Judas and his brotherswith proposals peaceable yet treacherous.	10 Ed ei si mossero, ed entraron con grande esercito nella terra di Giuda, e mandarono ambasciadori a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli con buone parole per ingannarli.
11 The latter, however, did not put any faith in their words, aware that they had come with a large force.	11 Ma questi non dieder orecchio ai loro discorsi, perché vedevano, che eran venuti con grand'esercito.
12 Nevertheless, a commission of scribes presented themselves before Alcimus and Bacchides, to suefor just terms.	12 E una schiera di Scribi si presentarono ad Alcimo e a Bacchide per domandar loro quel che era di giustizia:
13 The first among the Israelites to ask them for peace terms were the Hasidaeans,	13 E alla testa di questi figliuoli d'Israele erano gli Assidei, e chiedevano la pace.
14 who reasoned thus, 'This is a priest of Aaron's line who has come with the armed forces; he wil notwrong us.'	14 Perocchè dicevano: Viene uno, che è sacerdote della stirpe d'Aronne, egli non ci gabberà.
15 He did in fact discuss peace terms with them and gave them his oath, 'We shal not attempt to injureyou or your friends.'	15 Ed egli fece loro buone parole, e giurò, e disse: Non farem male a voi, ne ai vostri amici.
16 They believed him, but he arrested sixty of them and put them to death on one day, fulfil ing the wordsof scripture:	16 E quegli si fidarono. Ma egli fece prendere sessanta uomini de' loro, e gli uccise in un medesimo giorno secondo quella parola, che sta scritta:
17 They have scattered the bodies of your faithful, and shed their blood all round Jerusalem, leaving noone to bury them!	17 Le carni de'santi tuoi, e il loro sangue gettarono intorno a Gerusalemme, nè vi fù chi desse loro sepoltura.
18 At this, fear and dread gripped the whole people. 'There is no truth or virtue in them,' they said, 'theyhave broken their agreement and their sworn oath.'	18 E il popolo fa sorpreso da timore e tremore, perocchè dicevano: Non è verità, nè giustizia in costoro, dappoichè hanno violati i patti e il giuramento, che han fatto.
19 Bacchides then left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Zeth, and from there sent and arrested many ofthe men who had deserted him and a few of our people too; he had them kil ed and thrown down the great wel .	19 E Bacchide mosse il campo verso Gerusalemme, e si avvicinò a Bethzeca, e fece mettere le mani addosso a molti, che si eran ritirati dal suo partito: e alcuni del popolo uccise, e li fe' gettare in un pozzo profondo.
20 He then put Alcimus in charge of the province, leaving an army with him to support him; Bacchideshimself returned to the king.	20 E diede il paese nelle mani di Alcimo, e lasciò a lui de' soldati per sostenersi: ed ei se ne andò a trovare il re.
21 Alcimus continued his struggle to become high priest,	21 E Alcimo facea di tutto per istabilire il suo pontificato.
22 and al who were disturbing the peace of their own people ral ied to him, and, having won control ofJudaea, did much harm in Israel.	22 E si raunarono intorno a lui tutti i perturbatori del popolo, e padroneggiavano nella terra di Giuda, e fecero mali grandi ad Israele.
23 Seeing that al the wrongs done to the Israelites by Alcimus and his supporters exceeded what thegentiles had done,	23 Ma Giuda, riflettendo a tutte le vessazioni fatte da Alcimo e da quelli, che erano con lui contro i figliuoli d'Israele, le quali erano molto peggiori, che quelle fatte dalle nazioni,
24 Judas went right round the whole territory of Judaea to take vengeance on those who had desertedhim and to prevent their free movement about the country.	24 Andò in giro per tutte le parti della Giudea, e gastigava quei disertori, e finirono di scorrere quel paese.
25 When Alcimus saw how strong Judas and his supporters had grown and realised that he waspowerless to resist them, he went back to the king, to whom he made malicious accusations against them.	25 Ma vedendo Alcimo, che Giuda e i suoi partigiani erano superiori di forze, e conoscendo di non poter ad essi far testa, se ne tornò al re, e gli accusò di molti delitti.
26 The king sent Nicanor, one of his generals ranking as Il ustrious and a bitter enemy of Israel, withorders to exterminate the people.	26 E il re mandò Nicanore uno de' suoi grandi di prima sfera, il quale era nemico dichiarato d'Israele, e gli diede commissione di distrugger quel popolo.
27 Reaching Jerusalem with a large force, Nicanor sent a friendly, yet treacherous, message to Judasand his brothers, as follows:	27 E Nicanore si portò a Gerusalemme con grande esercito, e mandò gente a parlare di pace con Giuda, e co' suoi fratelli per ingannarli,
28 'Let us have no fighting between you and me; I shall come with a smal escort for a peaceful meetingwith you.'	28 Dicendo: Non sia guerra tra me e voi; io verrò con poca comitiva a vedervi amichevolmente.
29 He met Judas and they exchanged friendly greetings; the enemy, however, had made preparations toabduct Judas.	29 E andò a trovar Giuda, e si salutarono scambievolmente con cortesia, ma i nemici stavano pronti per metter le mani addosso a Giuda.
30 When Judas became aware of Nicanor's treacherous purpose in coming to see him, he took fright andrefused any further meeting.	30 E Giuda riseppe come quegli eran venuti a lui con cattive intenzioni, e n'ebbe paura, e non volte più vederlo in viso.
31 Nicanor then realised that his plan had been discovered, and took the field against Judas, to givebattle near Caphar-Salama.	31 E il Nicanore avendo inteso come erano state scoperte le sue trame, andò incontro a Giuda per combatterla presso a Caphar-Salama.
32 About five hundred of Nicanor's men fell; the rest took refuge in the City of David.	32 E dell'esercito di Nicanore restaron morti circa cinque mila uomini. E quelli si ritirarono nella città di David.
33 After these events Nicanor went up to Mount Zion. Some of the priests came out of the Holy Placewith some elders, to give him a friendly welcome and show him the burnt offering being presented for the king.	33 E dopo questo Nicanore salì al monte di Sion; e venner fuori un numero di sacerdoti a salutarlo bonariamente, e a fargli vedere gli olocausti, che si offerivano per il re.
34 But he ridiculed them, laughed at them, defiled them and used insolent language, swearing in hisrage,	34 Ma egli li derise e li sprezzo e trattolli come profani, e parlò arrogantemente,
35 'Unless Judas is handed over to me this time with his army, as soon as I am safely back, I promiseyou, I shal burn this building down!'	35 E giurò con ira, e disse: Se non mi sarà dato nelle mani Giuda e il sua esercito, subito che io tornerò colla vittoria metterò il fuoco a questa casa. E se n'andò fieramente sdegnato:
36 Then he went off in a fury. At this, the priests went in again, and stood weeping in front of the altarand the Temple, saying,	36 E i sacerdoti andarono a presentarsi davanti all'altare e al tempio, e dissero piangendo:
37 'You have chosen this house to be cal ed by your name, to be a house of prayer and petition for yourpeople.	37 Tu, Signore, eleggesti questa casa, affinché in essa fosse invocato il tuo nome, ed ella fosse casa di orazione e di preghiera pel popolo tuo:
38 Take vengeance on this man and on his army, and let them fal by the sword; remember theirblasphemies and give them no respite.'	38 Gastiga quest'uomo e il suo esercito, e periscano di spada: ricordati delle loro bestemmie, e non permettere ch'ei sussistano.
39 Nicanor left Jerusalem and encamped at Beth-Horon, where he was joined by an army from Syria.	39 E Nicanore parti da Gerusalemme, e si accampò vicino a Bethoron, e gli venner incontra le milizie della Siria.
40 Judas, meanwhile, camped at Adasa with three thousand men, and offered this prayer,	40 E Giuda si avvicinò ad Adarsa con tre mila uomini; e fece orazione Giuda, e disse:
41 'When the king's envoys blasphemed, your angel went out and struck down one hundred and eighty-five thousand of his men.	41 Perché i nunzi mandati da Sennacherib bestemmiaron contro di te, o Signore, venne un Angelo, il quale uccise cento ottantacinque mila de' loro.
42 In the same way let us see you crush this army today, so that everyone else may know that this manhas spoken blasphemously against your sanctuary: pass judgement on him as his wickedness deserves!'	42 Stermina nella stessa guisa in quest'oggi dinanzi a noi quest'esercito, e tutti gli altri conoscano, come indegnamente egli ha parlato del tuo santuario; e giudicalo tu secondo la sua malvagità.
43 The armies met in battle on the thirteenth of the month Adar, and Nicanor's army was crushed, hehimself being the first to fal in the battle.	43 E gli eserciti vennero alle mani ai tredici del mese di Adar, e le schiere di Nicanore furon rotte, ed egli il primo morì nella zuffa.
44 When Nicanor's soldiers saw him fal , they threw down their arms and fled.	44 E quando l'esercito di Nicanore vide, che questi era morto, getturon l'armi, e fuggirono.
45 The Jews pursued them a day's journey, from Adasa to the approaches of Gezer; they sounded theirtrumpets in warning as they fol owed them,	45 E i Giudei gl'inseguirono un' intera giornata da Adazer fino a Gazara, e tenevan lor dietro sonando le trombe per avviso di tutti.
46 and people came out of al the surrounding Judaean vil ages to encircle the fugitives, who then turnedback on their own men. Al fel by the sword, not one being left alive.	46 E usciva gente da tutti i castelli della Giudea, che erano all'intorno, e davano loro addosso, onde quelli tornavano a voltar faccia ai vincitori, e tutti quanti perirono di spada, e non ne restò neppur uno.
47 Having col ected the spoils and booty, they cut off Nicanor's head and the right hand he had stretchedout in a display of insolence; these were taken and displayed within sight of Jerusalem.	47 E quelli presero le loro spoglie, e troncaron la testa e la mano di Nicanore, la quale egli aveva alzata arrogantemente, e le portarono, e le appesero in vista di Gerusalemme.
48 The people were overjoyed and kept that day as a great holiday:	48 Il popolo si rallegrò sommamente, e passaron quel giorno in gran festa.
49 indeed they decided to celebrate it annual y on the thirteenth of Adar.	49 E Giuda ordinò, che si celebrasse tutti gli anni quella solennità ai tredici del mese di Adar.
50 For a short while Judaea enjoyed peace.	50 E la terra di Giuda fu in pace per pochi giorni.
