1 When the surrounding nations heard that the altar had been rebuilt and the sanctuary restored to whatit had been before, they became very angry	1 Appena le nazioni circonvicine seppero che l'altare e il santuario erano stati riedificati come prima, ne furono irritatissime,
2 and decided to destroy the descendants of Jacob living among them; they began to murder and evictour people.	2 e decisero di sterminare quelli che eran tra loro della stirpe di Giacobbe, e cominciarono a uccidere e a perseguitare quel popolo.
3 Judas made war on the sons of Esau in Idumaea, in the region of Acrabattene where they werebesieging the Israelites. He dealt them a serious blow, drove them off and despoiled them.	3 Ma Giuda debellava i figli d'Esaù in Idumea, e quelli che erano in Acrabatane, perchè tenevano assediati gl'israeliti, ene fece gran macello.
4 He also remembered the wickedness of the sons of Baean, who were a menace and a trap for thepeople with their ambushes on the roads.	4 E, ricordatosi della malizia dei figli di Bean, che erano pel popolo un laccio, una pietra d'inciampo, per le insidie che tendevan per le strade,

9 Next, the gentiles of Gilead banded together to destroy the Israelites living in their territory. 10 and sent the fol owing letter to Judas and his brothers: 'The gentiles round us have bandedthemselves together against us to destroy us,	10 e mandarono lettere a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli, nelle quali dicevano: « Le genti circonvicine si sono adunate per sterminarci,
11 and they are preparing to storm the fortress in which we have taken refuge; Timotheus is in commandof their forces.	11 e si preparano per venire ad espugnare la fortezza nella quale ci siamo rifugiati, ed hanno per loro condottiero Timoteo:
12 Come at once and rescue us from their clutches, for we have already suffered great losses.	12 or dunque vieni a salvarci dalle loro mani, perchè molti di noi son caduti,
13 Al our countrymen living in Tobias' country have been killed, their women and children have beentaken into captivity, their property has been seized, and about a thousand men have been destroyed there.'	13 e tutti i nostri fratelli che erano neiluoghi di Tubin sono stati uccisi: hanno condotto in schiavitù le loro mogli, i loro figli, han portato via i loro beni, e vi hanno messo a morte circa mille uomini ».

16 When Judas and the people heard this, they held a great assembly to decide what should be done fortheir oppressed countrymen who were under attack from their enemies.	16 Appena Giuda e il popolo ebbero udite tali cose, fu tenuta una grande assemblea per esaminare il da farsi in favore dei loro fratelli che erano in tribolazioni, attaccati da tali genti.
17 Judas said to his brother Simon, 'Pick your men and go and relieve your countrymen in Galilee, whilemy brother Jonathan and I make our way into Gilead.'	17 E Giuda disse a Simone suo fratello: « Scegliti degli uomini, e va a liberare i tuoi fratelli in Galilea, io e il mio fratello Ginnata andremo nella terra di Galaad ».
18 He left Joseph son of Zechariah and the people's leader Azariah with the remainder of the army inJudaea to keep guard, and gave them these orders,	18 E lasciò Giuseppe, figlio di Zaccaria, e Azaria,capi del popolo, col resto dell'esercito a difendere la Giudea.
19 'You are to be responsible for our people. Do not engage the gentiles until we return.'	19 E diede loro questi ordini: « Abbiate cura di questo popolo, e non attaccate battaglia colle nazioni fino al nostro ritorno ».
20 Simon was al otted three thousand men for the expedition into Galilee, Judas eight thousand forGilead.	20 E si divisero gli uomini: tre mila a Simone, per andar nella Galilea, otto mila a Giuda, per andar nella terra di Galaad.
21 Simon advanced into Galilee, engaged the gentiles in several battles and swept all before him;	21 Or Simone, andato nella Galilea, ebbe molte battaglie colle nazioni, che furono schiacciate davanti a lui, ed egli le inseguì fino alla porta di Tolemaide.
22 he pursued them to the gate of Ptolemais, and they lost about three thousand men, whose spoils hecol ected.	22 E caddero circa tre mila uomini di quelle nazioni, alle quali egli prese le spoglie.
23 With him, he took away the Jews of Galilee and Arbatta, with their wives and children and all theirpossessions, and brought them into Judaea with great rejoicing.	23 E presi seco quelli che erano nella Galilea e in Arbate, colle mogli, coi figlioli e con tutto quello che avevano, li menò con gran gioia nella Giudea.
24 Meanwhile Judas Maccabaeus and his brother Jonathan crossed the Jordan and made a three-days'march through the desert,	24 Intanto Giuda Maccabeo e Gionata suo fratello avevan passato il Giordano, ed avevan camminato per tre giorni nel deserto.
25 where they encountered the Nabataeans, who gave them a friendly reception and told themeverything that had been happening to their brothers in Gilead,	25 Allora andarono loro incontro i Nabutei, che li ricevettero come amici e narrarono ad essi quello che era avvenuto ai loro fratelli nella terra di Galaad,
26 many of whom, they said, were shut up in Bozrah and Bosor, Alema, Chaspho, Maked and Carnaim,al large fortified towns.	26 e come molti di essi eran tenuti prigionieri in Barasa, in Bosor, in Alimis, in Casfor, in Maget e in Carnaim, tutte città fortificate e grandi,
27 Others were blockaded in the other towns of Gilead, and the enemy planned to attack and capturethese strongholds the very next day, and destroy all the people inside them on one day.	27 che eran tenuti prigionieri anche nelle altre città di Galaad, e che (i nemici) pel giorno dopo avevano stabilito di fare avvicinare l'esercito a quelle città, di prenderli e sterminarli in un sol giorno.
28 Judas and his army at once turned off by the desert road to Bozrah. He took the town and, having putal the males to the sword and col ected the booty, burned it down.	28 Allora Giuda col suo esercito prese subito la strada del deserto di Bosor, e ne occupò la città, e messi a fil di spada tutti i maschi, ne prese tutte le spoglie, e abbandonò la città alle fiamme.
29 When night came, he left the place, and they continued their march until they reached the fortress.	29 E partiron di là di notte, per andare fino alla fortezza.
30 In the light of dawn they looked, and there was an innumerable horde, setting up ladders and enginesto capture the fortress; the assault was just beginning.	30 E all'apparir del giorno, alzando gli occhi, videro gran moltitudine, innumerevole, che portava scale e macchine per espugnare la fortezza e debellare quelli (che vi erano).
31 When Judas saw that the attack had begun and that the war cry was rising to heaven from the city,mingled with trumpet cal s and a great clamour,	31 Giuda, vedendo che l'attacco era cominciato, e che il rumore della battaglia andava al cielo come (il suono di) tromba, e che grandi clamori (venivano) dalla città,
32 he said to the men of his army, 'Into battle today for your brothers!'	32 disse al suo esercito: « Combattete in questo giorno pei vostri fratelli ».
33 Dividing them into three commands, he advanced on the enemy's rear, with trumpets sounding andprayers shouted aloud.	33 E s'avanzò con tre schiere dietro ad essi; e diedero fiato alle trombe, e alzarono la voce nella preghiera.
34 The troops of Timotheus, recognising that this was Maccabaeus, fled before his advance;Maccabaeus dealt them a crushing defeat; about eight thousand of their men fel that day.	34 Ma quelli dell'esercito di Timoteo, saputo che c'era Maccabeo, fuggirono davanti a lui, e ne fu fatto un gran macello, e di essi in quel giorno morirono circa ottomila uomini.
35 Then, wheeling on Alema, he attacked and captured it and, having killed all the males and col ectedthe booty, burned the place down.	35 Poi Giuda piegò verso Masfa, la espugnò, la prese, ne uccise tutti i maschi, ne prese tutte le spoglie, e l'abbandonò alle fiamme.
36 From there he moved on and took Chaspho, Maked, Bosor and the remaining towns of Gilead.	36 Di là, seguitando, prese Casbon, Maget, Bosor, e le altre città della terra di Galaad.
37 After these events, Timotheus mustered another force and pitched camp opposite Raphon, on the farside of the stream-bed.	37 Dopo questi avvenimenti, Timoteo mise insieme un altro esercito, e pose il campo di faccia a Rafon, di là dal torrente.
38 Judas sent men to reconnoitre the camp, and these reported back as fol ows, 'With him are massedal the gentiles surrounding us, making a very numerous army,	38 E Giuda mandò a spiare il nemico, e gli riferirono e gli dissero: « Si sono unite con lui tutte le nazioni che sono d'intorno a noi: l'esercito è oltremodo numeroso.
39 with Arab mercenaries as auxiliaries; they are encamped on the far side of the stream-bed, and readyto launch an attack on you.' Judas then advanced to engage them,	39 E hanno assoldato, coinè ausiliari, gli Arabi, si sono accampati di là dal torrente, e son pronti ad attaccare contro di te la battaglia ». Allora Giuda andò ad incontrarli.
40 and was approaching the watercourse with his troops when Timotheus told the commanders of hisarmy, 'If he crosses first we shal not be able to resist him, because he wil have a great advantage over us;	40 E Timoteo disse ai capi del suo esercito: « Quando Giuda col suo esercito si sarà avvicinato al torrente, se egli per il primo passa contro di noi, non potremo stargli a fronte, perchè diventerà potentissimo contro di noi.
41 but if he is afraid and camps on the other side of the stream, we shall cross over to him and theadvantage will then be ours.'	41 Ma se egli avrà paura a passare, e metterà il campo di là dal fiume, passiamo noi contro di loro, e diventeremo potenti contro di lui ».
42 As soon as Judas reached the watercourse, he posted people's scribes along it, giving them thisorder: 'Do not let anyone pitch his tent; al are to go into battle!'	42 Or Giuda, avvicinatosi al torrente, pose gli scribi del popolo lungo il torrente, e diede loro quest'ordine: « Non lasciate fermare nessuno, ma tutti vengano alla battaglia ».
43 He was himself the first across to the enemy side, with al the people fol owing. He defeated al theopposing gentiles, who threw down their arms and ran for refuge in the sanctuary of Carnaim.	43 E passò per il primo contro i nemici, seguito da tutto il popolo, e davanti a lui furono schiacciate tutte le nazioni, che gettarono le armi e fuggirono al tempio che era in Carnaiin.
44 The Jews first captured the town and then burned down the temple with everyone inside. And soCarnaim was overthrown, and the enemy could offer no further resistance to Judas.	44 E (Giuda) occupò anche quella città, diede alle fiamme il tempio con tutti quelli che v'eran dentro, e Carnaim fu oppressa e non potè resistere a Giuda.
45 Next, Judas assembled al the Israelites living in Gilead, from the least to the greatest, with theirwives, children and belongings, an enormous muster, to take them to Judaea.	45 Allora Giuda radunò tutti gl'israeliti che erano nella terra di Galaad, dal più piccolo al più grande, con le loro mogli e i figli, esercito oltremodo grande? da portarsi nella terra di Giuda.
46 They reached Ephron, a large town straddling the road and strongly fortified. As it was impossible toby-pass it either to right or to left, there was nothing for it but to march straight through.	46 E giunsero ad Efron, grande città, posta all'entrata, molto fortificata: non era possibile evitarla, andando a destra o a sinistra, ma bisognava attraversarla.
47 But the people of the town denied them passage and barricaded the gates with stones.	47 Quelli che erano nella città vi si chiusero dentro e ostruirono le porte colle pietre. Giuda mandò ad essi con parole di pace,
48 Judas sent them a conciliatory message in these terms, 'We want to pass through your territory toreach our own; no one wil do you any harm, we only want to go through on foot.' But they would not open up forhim.	48 dicendo: « Ci sia dato di passare pel vostro territorio per tornare nei nostri paesi, e nessuno vi farà danno: passeremo soltanto coi piedi ». Ma quelli non vollero aprire.
49 So Judas sent an order down the column for everyone to halt where he stood.	49 Allora Giuda comandò di pubblicare all'esercito che ciascuno andasse all'assalto dalla parte in cui si trovava,
50 The fighting men took up their positions; Judas attacked the town al day and night, and the town fellto him.	50 i più valorosi andarono all'assalto, la città fu attaccata tutto quel giorno e tutta quella notte, e fu data nello sue mani.
51 He put all the males to the sword, rased the town to the ground, plundered it and marched through thetown square over the bodies of the dead.	51 Ed egli fece passare a fil di spadai tutti i maschi, la distrusse, ne prese lo spoglie, e attraversò tutta la città soprai corpi degli uccisi.
52 They then crossed the Jordan into the Great Plain, opposite Beth-Shean,	52 Poi passarono il Giordano nella gran pianura che è di faccia a Betsan.
53 Judas al the time ral ying the stragglers and encouraging the people the whole way until they reachedJudaea.	53 E Giuda, tenendo insieme le ultime file, faceva animo al popolo per tutta la strada, finché giunsero nella terra di Giuda.
54 They climbed Mount Zion in joy and gladness and presented burnt offerings because they hadreturned safe and sound without having lost a single man.	54 Allora salirono con letizia e gioia al monte Sion, ed offersero olocausti per essere ritornati in pace senza la perdita di alcuno di essi.
55 While Judas and Jonathan were in Gilead and Simon his brother in Galilee outside Ptolemais,	55 Nel tempo in cui Giuda e Gionata erano nella terra di Galaad, e Simone, loro fratello, era in Galilea, di faccia a Tolemaide,
56 Joseph son of Zechariah, and Azariah, who were in command of the army, heard of their valiantdeeds and of the battles they had been fighting,	56 Giuseppe, figlio di Zaccaria, e Azaria, capo dell'armata, avute le notizie delle felici imprese e delle battaglie che erano avvenute,
57 and said, 'Let us make a name for ourselves too and go and fight the nations around us.'	57 dissero: «Facciamoci anche noi un nome, e andiamo a combattere contro le nazioni che ci stanno d'intorno ».
58 So they issued orders to the men under their command and marched on Jamnia.	58 E dati gli ordini agli uomini della loro armata, andarono a Iamnia.
59 Gorgias and his men came out of the town and gave battle.	59 Ma Gorgia, colla sua gente uscì fuori della città e andò loro contro in battaglia.
60 Joseph and Azariah were routed and pursued as far as the frontiers of Judaea. That day about twothousand Israelites lost their lives.	60 E Giuseppe e Azaria furono messi in fuga sino ai confini della Giudea, e in quel giorno caddero fino a due mila uomini del popolo d'Israele. Fu grande la fuga del popolo,
61 Our people thus met with a great reverse, because they had not listened to Judas and his brothers,thinking that they would do something equal y valiant.	61 perchè essi non avevan dato retta a Giuda e ai suoi fratelli, credendo di agire da eroi.
62 They were not, however, of the same breed of men as those to whom the deliverance of Israel wasentrusted.	62 Ma essi non eran della stirpe di quegli uomini per i quali fu data la salvezza a Israele.
63 The noble Judas and his brothers, however, were held in high honour throughout Israel and among althe nations wherever their name was heard,	63 Mentre le schiere di Giuda ebbero grande gloria davanti a tutto Israele e a tutte le nazioni dove era giunto il loro nome.
64 and people thronged round to acclaim them.	64 E si radunarono intorno a loro con liete acclamazioni.
65 Judas marched out with his brothers to fight the Edomites in the country towards the south; hestormed Hebron and its dependent vil ages, threw down its fortifications and burned down its encircling towers.	65 Poi Giuda coi suoi fratelli si mise in marcia, e andò a debellare i figli d'Esaù, nella terra australe, e prese Chebron e le città da lei dipendenti, e distrusse col fuoco le mura e le torri che la circondavano.
66 Leaving there, he made for the country of the Philistines and passed through Marisa.	66 E, levato il campo, per andare nella terra degli stranieri, passò per Samaria.
67 Among the fal en in that day's fighting were some priests who sought to prove their courage there byjoining in the battle, a foolhardy venture.	67 In quel giorno morirono in guerra dei sacerdoti, mentre, volendo far bravure, entravano imprudentemente nella battaglia.
68 Judas next turned on Azotus, which belonged to the Philistines; he overthrew their altars, burned thestatues of their gods and, having pil aged their towns, withdrew to Judaea.	68 Poi Giuda piegò verso Azoto, nella terra degli stranieri, e abbattè i loro altari, e gettò alle fiamme le statue dei loro dèi, e prese le spoglie dello città, e se ne tornò nella terra di Giuda.
