1 Maccabees 5

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 When the surrounding nations heard that the altar had been rebuilt and the sanctuary restored to whatit had been before, they became very angry	1 Cuando las naciones vecinas supieron que había sido reconstruido el altar y restaurado como antes el Santuario, se irritaron profundamente
2 and decided to destroy the descendants of Jacob living among them; they began to murder and evictour people.	2 y decidieron acabar con los descendientes de Jacob que vivían entre ellos. Por eso comenzaron a matar y exterminar a mucha gente del pueblo.
3 Judas made war on the sons of Esau in Idumaea, in the region of Acrabattene where they werebesieging the Israelites. He dealt them a serious blow, drove them off and despoiled them.	3 Judas hizo la guerra contra los descendientes de Esaú que habitaban en Idumea, en la región de Acrabatena, porque tenían asediados a los israelitas. Les infligió una gran derrota, cometiéndolos y apoderándose de sus despojos.
4 He also remembered the wickedness of the sons of Baean, who were a menace and a trap for thepeople with their ambushes on the roads.	4 Luego se acordó de la maldad de los descendientes de Beán; que eran una trampa y un obstáculo para el pueblo por las emboscadas que le tendían en los caminos.
5 Having blockaded them in their town and besieged them, he put them under the curse of destruction;he then set fire to their towers and burned them down with everyone inside.	5 Los obligó a encerrarse en sus torres, los asedió y los consagró al exterminio total, prendiendo fuego a esas torres con todos los que estaban dentro.
6 Next, he crossed over to the Ammonites where he found a strong fighting force and a numerouspeople, commanded by Timotheus.	6 Luego atacó a los amonitas, y allí encontró un fuerte ejército y una población numerosa cuyo jefe era Timoteo.
7 He fought many battles with them, defeated them and cut them to pieces.	7 Después de muchos combates, los desbarató y los deshizo.
8 Having captured Jazer and its dependent vil ages, he retired to Judaea.	8 También ocupó Iazer y sus poblados, y regresó a Judea.
9 Next, the gentiles of Gilead banded together to destroy the Israelites living in their territory. The latter,however, took refuge in the fortress of Dathema,	9 Los pueblos de Galaad se coaligaron contra los israelitas que vivían en su territorio, para exterminarlos. Pero ellos se refugiaron en la fortaleza de Datemá,
10 and sent the fol owing letter to Judas and his brothers: 'The gentiles round us have bandedthemselves together against us to destroy us,	10 desde donde enviaron una carta a Judas y a sus hermanos, diciéndoles: «Los pueblos que nos rodean se coaligaron para exterminarnos;
11 and they are preparing to storm the fortress in which we have taken refuge; Timotheus is in commandof their forces.	11 ahora se preparan para venir a tomar la fortaleza donde nos hemos refugiado, y Timoteo está al frente de su ejército.
12 Come at once and rescue us from their clutches, for we have already suffered great losses.	12 Ven en seguida a librarnos de sus manos, porque muchos de entre nosotros ya han caído;
13 Al our countrymen living in Tobias' country have been killed, their women and children have beentaken into captivity, their property has been seized, and about a thousand men have been destroyed there.'	13 todos nuestros hermanos que vivían en el país de Tobías han sido matados, sus mujeres y sus hijos fueron llevados cautivos y sus bienes han sido robados. Allí han muerto unos mil hombres».
14 While the letter was being read, other messengers arrived from Galilee with their garments torn,bearing similar news,	14 Cuando todavía estaban leyendo la carta, llegaron otros mensajeros de Galilea, con las vestiduras rasgadas, trayendo esta noticia:
15 'The people of Ptolemais, Tyre and Sidon have joined forces with the whole of gentile Galilee todestroy us!'	15 «Los habitantes de Tolemaida, de Tiro, de Sidón y de toda la Galilea de los extranjeros se han coaligado para acabar con nosotros».
16 When Judas and the people heard this, they held a great assembly to decide what should be done fortheir oppressed countrymen who were under attack from their enemies.	16 Apenas Judas y el pueblo oyeron estas noticias, reunieron una gran asamblea para deliberar sobre lo que debían hacer en favor de sus hermanos que se encontraban en un aprieto, amenazados por sus enemigos.
17 Judas said to his brother Simon, 'Pick your men and go and relieve your countrymen in Galilee, whilemy brother Jonathan and I make our way into Gilead.'	17 Judas dijo a su hermano Simón: «Elige algunos hombres y ve a librar a tus hermanos de Galilea; mi hermano Jonatán y yo iremos a la región de Galaad».
18 He left Joseph son of Zechariah and the people's leader Azariah with the remainder of the army inJudaea to keep guard, and gave them these orders,	18 Dejó para defender a Judea a José, hijo de Zacarías, y a Azarías, jefe del pueblo, con el resto del ejército,
19 'You are to be responsible for our people. Do not engage the gentiles until we return.'	19 dándoles esta orden: «Tomen el mando de estas tropas, pero no entren en batalla con los paganos hasta que nosotros volvamos».
20 Simon was al otted three thousand men for the expedition into Galilee, Judas eight thousand forGilead.	20 Se le asignaron tres mil hombres a Simón para la campaña de Galilea y ocho mil a Judas para la de Galaad.
21 Simon advanced into Galilee, engaged the gentiles in several battles and swept all before him;	21 Simón partió para Galilea y luego de librar muchos combates con los paganos, los derrotó, los obligó a huir
22 he pursued them to the gate of Ptolemais, and they lost about three thousand men, whose spoils hecol ected.	22 y los persiguió hasta las puertas de Tolemaida. Allí sucumbieron unos tres mil hombres y Judas se apoderó del botín.
23 With him, he took away the Jews of Galilee and Arbatta, with their wives and children and all theirpossessions, and brought them into Judaea with great rejoicing.	23 Luego tomó consigo a los judíos de Galilea y de Arbatá, con sus mujeres, sus hijos y todos sus bienes, y en medio de una gran alegría los llevó a Judea.
24 Meanwhile Judas Maccabaeus and his brother Jonathan crossed the Jordan and made a three-days'march through the desert,	24 Judas Macabeo y su hermano Jonatán, por su parte, atravesaron el Jordán y caminaron tres días por el desierto.
25 where they encountered the Nabataeans, who gave them a friendly reception and told themeverything that had been happening to their brothers in Gilead,	25 Allí se encontraron con los nabateos, que los recibieron amistosamente y los pusieron al tanto de lo que les ocurría a sus hermanos de la región de Galaad;
26 many of whom, they said, were shut up in Bozrah and Bosor, Alema, Chaspho, Maked and Carnaim,al large fortified towns.	26 muchos de ellos se encontraban prisioneros en Bosorá y Bosor, en Alemá, Casfó, Maqued y Carnain, que eran ciudades fuertes e importantes;
27 Others were blockaded in the other towns of Gilead, and the enemy planned to attack and capturethese strongholds the very next day, and destroy all the people inside them on one day.	27 también había prisioneros en las demás ciudades de Galaad, y sus enemigos tomaban posiciones para atacar las fortalezas al día siguiente, a fin de apoderarse de ellos y exterminarlos a todos de una sola vez.
28 Judas and his army at once turned off by the desert road to Bozrah. He took the town and, having putal the males to the sword and col ected the booty, burned it down.	28 Inmediatamente, Judas dio vuelta con su ejército y se dirigió por el desierto hacia Bosorá, ocupó la ciudad y después de pasar al filo de la espada a todos los varones, la saqueó por completo y la incendió.
29 When night came, he left the place, and they continued their march until they reached the fortress.	29 Partió de allí por la noche y avanzó hasta la fortaleza.
30 In the light of dawn they looked, and there was an innumerable horde, setting up ladders and enginesto capture the fortress; the assault was just beginning.	30 Al llegar el día, los judíos divisaron una muchedumbre innumerable que levantaba escaleras y empalizadas para tomar la fortaleza y había pasado a la ofensiva.
31 When Judas saw that the attack had begun and that the war cry was rising to heaven from the city,mingled with trumpet cal s and a great clamour,	31 Al ver que el ataque ya había comenzado y que el griterío de la ciudad y el sonido de las trompetas subía hasta el cielo,
32 he said to the men of his army, 'Into battle today for your brothers!'	32 Judas dijo a sus hombres: «¡Luchen hoy por nuestros hermanos!».
33 Dividing them into three commands, he advanced on the enemy's rear, with trumpets sounding andprayers shouted aloud.	33 Luego los ordenó en tres columnas y los hizo avanzar por detrás del enemigo, tocando las trompetas y orando a gritos.
34 The troops of Timotheus, recognising that this was Maccabaeus, fled before his advance;Maccabaeus dealt them a crushing defeat; about eight thousand of their men fel that day.	34 Las tropas de Timoteo, apenas se enteraron que era el Macabeo, huyeron ante él. Judas les infligió una gran derrota, y ese día dejaron tendidos unos ocho mil hombres.
35 Then, wheeling on Alema, he attacked and captured it and, having killed all the males and col ectedthe booty, burned the place down.	35 Luego se volvió contra Alemá; la atacó, la ocupó y, después de matar a todos los varones, la saqueó y la incendió.
36 From there he moved on and took Chaspho, Maked, Bosor and the remaining towns of Gilead.	36 Partiendo de allí, se apoderó de Casfó, Maqued, Bosor y de las demás ciudades de Galaad.
37 After these events, Timotheus mustered another force and pitched camp opposite Raphon, on the farside of the stream-bed.	37 Después de estos acontecimientos, Timoteo reunió un nuevo ejército y acampó frente a Rafón, al otro lado del torrente.
38 Judas sent men to reconnoitre the camp, and these reported back as fol ows, 'With him are massedal the gentiles surrounding us, making a very numerous army,	38 Judas mandó a explorar el campamento y le dieron este informe: «Todas las naciones vecinas se han unido a Timoteo y forman un ejército muy numeroso.
39 with Arab mercenaries as auxiliaries; they are encamped on the far side of the stream-bed, and readyto launch an attack on you.' Judas then advanced to engage them,	39 Además, tienen como auxiliares a mercenarios árabes. Ahora están acampados al otro lado del torrente, preparados para atacarle». Entonces Judas salió a su encuentro,
40 and was approaching the watercourse with his troops when Timotheus told the commanders of hisarmy, 'If he crosses first we shal not be able to resist him, because he wil have a great advantage over us;	40 y mientras él se acercaba al torrente con su ejército, Timoteo dijo a sus capitanes: «Si él lo pasa primero y viene sobre nosotros, no podremos resistir, y nos vencerá seguramente;
41 but if he is afraid and camps on the other side of the stream, we shall cross over to him and theadvantage will then be ours.'	41 pero si se atemoriza y acampa al otro lado del río, lo atravesaremos nosotros, caeremos sobre él y lo venceremos».
42 As soon as Judas reached the watercourse, he posted people's scribes along it, giving them thisorder: 'Do not let anyone pitch his tent; al are to go into battle!'	42 Cuando Judas llegó al borde del torrente, ubicó a los escribas del pueblo a la orilla y les dio esta orden: «No dejen que ningún hombre quede en el campamento, sino que todos vayan al combate».
43 He was himself the first across to the enemy side, with al the people fol owing. He defeated al theopposing gentiles, who threw down their arms and ran for refuge in the sanctuary of Carnaim.	43 El fue el primero en cruzar el río en dirección al enemigo, y toda su gente lo siguió. Todos los paganos quedaron derrotados ante ellos, arrojaron sus armas y corrieron a refugiarse en el templo de Carnain.
44 The Jews first captured the town and then burned down the temple with everyone inside. And soCarnaim was overthrown, and the enemy could offer no further resistance to Judas.	44 Pero los judíos se apoderaron de la ciudad y quemaron el templo con todos los que había adentro. Carnain fue sometida, y ya nadie pudo resistir a Judas.
45 Next, Judas assembled al the Israelites living in Gilead, from the least to the greatest, with theirwives, children and belongings, an enormous muster, to take them to Judaea.	45 Judas reunió a todos los israelitas de la región de Galaad, del más pequeño al más grande, con sus mujeres, sus hijos y sus equipajes, para llevarlos al país de Judá: era una inmensa muchedumbre.
46 They reached Ephron, a large town straddling the road and strongly fortified. As it was impossible toby-pass it either to right or to left, there was nothing for it but to march straight through.	46 Llegaron a Efrón, ciudad importante y muy fortificada, que estaba sobre el camino, por la que tenían que pasar necesariamente, ya que no era posible desviarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.
47 But the people of the town denied them passage and barricaded the gates with stones.	47 Pero los habitantes de la ciudad les negaron el paso y bloquearon las entradas con piedras.
48 Judas sent them a conciliatory message in these terms, 'We want to pass through your territory toreach our own; no one wil do you any harm, we only want to go through on foot.' But they would not open up forhim.	48 Judas les envió un mensaje en son de paz, diciéndoles: «Permítannos pasar por el territorio de ustedes, para ir a nuestro país; nadie les hará ningún mal, sólo queremos pasar». Como ellos se negaron a abrirle,
49 So Judas sent an order down the column for everyone to halt where he stood.	49 Judas hizo anunciar en el campamento que cada uno tomara posición donde se encontraba.
50 The fighting men took up their positions; Judas attacked the town al day and night, and the town fellto him.	50 Los soldados ocuparon sus posiciones, y Judas atacó la ciudad todo aquel día y toda la noche, hasta que cayó en sus manos.
51 He put all the males to the sword, rased the town to the ground, plundered it and marched through thetown square over the bodies of the dead.	51 Hizo pasar al filo de la espada a todos los varones, arrasó la ciudad, la saqueó y la atravesó por encima de los cadáveres.
52 They then crossed the Jordan into the Great Plain, opposite Beth-Shean,	52 Después pasaron el Jordán en dirección a la gran llanura que está frente a Betsán.
53 Judas al the time ral ying the stragglers and encouraging the people the whole way until they reachedJudaea.	53 Durante todo el trayecto, Judas fue recogiendo a los rezagados y animando al pueblo hasta llegar a la tierra de Judá.
54 They climbed Mount Zion in joy and gladness and presented burnt offerings because they hadreturned safe and sound without having lost a single man.	54 Todos subieron al monte Sión con júbilo y alegría, y ofrecieron holocaustos por haber regresado sanos y salvos sin perder a ninguno de los suyos.
55 While Judas and Jonathan were in Gilead and Simon his brother in Galilee outside Ptolemais,	55 Cuando Judas y Jonatán estaban en el país de Galaad, y su hermano Simón en Galilea, frente Tolemaida,
56 Joseph son of Zechariah, and Azariah, who were in command of the army, heard of their valiantdeeds and of the battles they had been fighting,	56 José, hijo de Zacarías, y Azarías, jefes del ejército, al oír las proezas y combates que aquellos habían llevado a cabo,
57 and said, 'Let us make a name for ourselves too and go and fight the nations around us.'	57 dijeron: «Hagámonos célebres también nosotros, luchando contra los paganos que nos rodean».
58 So they issued orders to the men under their command and marched on Jamnia.	58 Entonces ordenaron a las tropas que estaban bajo su mando que avanzaran sobre Iamnia.
59 Gorgias and his men came out of the town and gave battle.	59 Gorgias salió de la ciudad con su ejército para luchar contra ellos.
60 Joseph and Azariah were routed and pursued as far as the frontiers of Judaea. That day about twothousand Israelites lost their lives.	60 José y Azarías fueron derrotados y perseguidos hasta la frontera de Judea. Aquel día cayeron alrededor de dos mil israelitas.
61 Our people thus met with a great reverse, because they had not listened to Judas and his brothers,thinking that they would do something equal y valiant.	61 Este fue un grave desastre para el pueblo por no haber obedecido a Judas y a sus hermanos, creyéndose capaces de grandes hazañas.
62 They were not, however, of the same breed of men as those to whom the deliverance of Israel wasentrusted.	62 Pero ellos no pertenecían a la estirpe de aquellos hombres a quienes estaba confiada la salvación de Israel.
63 The noble Judas and his brothers, however, were held in high honour throughout Israel and among althe nations wherever their name was heard,	63 El valiente Judas y sus hermanos alcanzaron gran celebridad en todo Israel en todas las naciones donde se oía hablar de ellos.
64 and people thronged round to acclaim them.	64 La gente se agolpaba a su alrededor para aclamarlos.
65 Judas marched out with his brothers to fight the Edomites in the country towards the south; hestormed Hebron and its dependent vil ages, threw down its fortifications and burned down its encircling towers.	65 Judas salió con sus hermanos para hacer la guerra a los descendientes de Esaú, en la región meridional. Se apoderó de Hebrón y de sus poblados, destruyó sus fortificaciones e incendió las torres de su alrededor.
66 Leaving there, he made for the country of the Philistines and passed through Marisa.	66 Luego partió en dirección al país de los filisteos y atravesó Marisá.
67 Among the fal en in that day's fighting were some priests who sought to prove their courage there byjoining in the battle, a foolhardy venture.	67 Aquel día, algunos sacerdotes que querían mostrar su valentía, cayeron en el combate por salir a luchar imprudentemente.
68 Judas next turned on Azotus, which belonged to the Philistines; he overthrew their altars, burned thestatues of their gods and, having pil aged their towns, withdrew to Judaea.	68 En seguida Judas se desvió hacia Azoto, en territorio filisteo: allí derribó sus altares, incendió las estatuas de sus dioses, saqueó sus ciudades, y finalmente, regresó al país de Judea.
