NEW JERUSALEM	BIBBIA RICCIOTTI
1 When the surrounding nations heard that the altar had been rebuilt and the sanctuary restored to whatit had been before, they became very angry	1 - Or quando i gentili all'intorno seppero che era stato riedificato come prima l’altare ed il santuario, s’adirarono grandemente ;
2 and decided to destroy the descendants of Jacob living among them; they began to murder and evictour people.	2 e pensando di sterminare quelli della razza d’Israele ch’erano fra loro, si dettero ad ucciderli e perseguitarli.
3 Judas made war on the sons of Esau in Idumaea, in the region of Acrabattene where they werebesieging the Israelites. He dealt them a serious blow, drove them off and despoiled them.	3 Ma Giuda assalì i figli d'Esaù nell'Idumea, e quelli che erano in Acrabatane, perchè erano infesti agl'Israeliti, e ne fece gran strage.
4 He also remembered the wickedness of the sons of Baean, who were a menace and a trap for thepeople with their ambushes on the roads.	4 Si ricordò anche della malizia di que’ di Bean, che erano pel popolo un laccio ed un pericolo tendendogli insidie nella via.
5 Having blockaded them in their town and besieged them, he put them under the curse of destruction;he then set fire to their towers and burned them down with everyone inside.	5 Li costrinse a chiudersi nelle torri e ve li assalì, li votò a morte, e dette alle fiamme le loro torri con tutti quelli che v'erano dentro.
6 Next, he crossed over to the Ammonites where he found a strong fighting force and a numerouspeople, commanded by Timotheus.	6 Passò poi agli Ammoniti, e vi trovò un esercito forte e numeroso, con a capo Timoteo.
7 He fought many battles with them, defeated them and cut them to pieces.	7 Li combattè in molte battaglie, li sconfisse e li annientò.
8 Having captured Jazer and its dependent vil ages, he retired to Judaea.	8 Prese la città di Gazer e le sue dipendenze, e poi tornò in Giudea.
9 Next, the gentiles of Gilead banded together to destroy the Israelites living in their territory. The latter,however, took refuge in the fortress of Dathema,	9 Ed i Gentili della terra di Galaad fecero lega contro gl’ Israeliti ch’erano entro i confini, per sterminarli. Ma questi si rifugiarono nella fortezza di Dateman,
10 and sent the fol owing letter to Judas and his brothers: 'The gentiles round us have bandedthemselves together against us to destroy us,	10 e mandarono a Giuda ed a’ suoi fratelli delle lettere che dicevano: « Le genti che ci circondano han fatto lega contro di noi per sterminarci,
11 and they are preparing to storm the fortress in which we have taken refuge; Timotheus is in commandof their forces.	11 e si preparano a venire, ed espugnar la fortezza dove ci siam rifugiati; Timoteo è il condottiero del loro esercito.
12 Come at once and rescue us from their clutches, for we have already suffered great losses.	12 Vieni dunque a liberarci dalle loro mani, perchè gran numero de’ nostri sono caduti.
13 Al our countrymen living in Tobias' country have been killed, their women and children have beentaken into captivity, their property has been seized, and about a thousand men have been destroyed there.'	13 Tutt’i nostri fratelli che erano nella regione di Tubin son stati uccisi, portate via prigioniere le loro mogli, coi figli e gli averi, e vi son morti quasi mille uomini».
14 While the letter was being read, other messengers arrived from Galilee with their garments torn,bearing similar news,	14 Queste lettere non eran finite di leggere, quando arrivarono dalla Galilea altri messi con le vesti strappate, portando notizie dello stesso genere,
15 'The people of Ptolemais, Tyre and Sidon have joined forces with the whole of gentile Galilee todestroy us!'	15 dicendo che quei di Tolemaide, di Tiro e di Sidone s’erano uniti contro di loro, e [concludendo]: « Tutta la Galilea è piena di stranieri che voglion distruggerci ».
16 When Judas and the people heard this, they held a great assembly to decide what should be done fortheir oppressed countrymen who were under attack from their enemies.	16 Quando Giuda ed il popolo udirono queste parole, tennero una grande assemblea per deliberare il da farsi a pro di que’fratelli che erano nella tribolazione e stavan per esser soppressi.
17 Judas said to his brother Simon, 'Pick your men and go and relieve your countrymen in Galilee, whilemy brother Jonathan and I make our way into Gilead.'	17 E Giuda disse a Simone suo fratello: «Prenditi degli uomini scelti e va a liberare i tuoi fratelli in Galilea; io ed il mio fratello Gionata andremo nel paese di Galaad ».
18 He left Joseph son of Zechariah and the people's leader Azariah with the remainder of the army inJudaea to keep guard, and gave them these orders,	18 Lasciò a capo del popolo Giuseppe figlio di Zaccaria, ed Azaria col rimanente esercito a guardia della Giudea.
19 'You are to be responsible for our people. Do not engage the gentiles until we return.'	19 E dette loro questo ordine: « Governate il popolo e non attaccate battaglia con le nazioni sinché non siamo tornati ».
20 Simon was al otted three thousand men for the expedition into Galilee, Judas eight thousand forGilead.	20 Furon assegnati a Simone tremila uomini acciò andasse nella Galilea; ed ottomila a Giuda per la terra di Galaad.
21 Simon advanced into Galilee, engaged the gentiles in several battles and swept all before him;	21 Andò dunque Simone in Galilea e venne più volte in battaglia coi gentili che furono da lui sgominati e li inseguì sino alla porta
22 he pursued them to the gate of Ptolemais, and they lost about three thousand men, whose spoils hecol ected.	22 di Tolemaide. Caddero, di loro, quasi tremila uomini, e Simone ne prese le spoglie.
23 With him, he took away the Jews of Galilee and Arbatta, with their wives and children and all theirpossessions, and brought them into Judaea with great rejoicing.	23 Poi raccolse [i Giudei] che erano in Galilea ed in Arbata, con le mogli ed i figli e quanto possedevano, e li condusse in Giudea con grande letizia.
24 Meanwhile Judas Maccabaeus and his brother Jonathan crossed the Jordan and made a three-days'march through the desert,	24 Giuda Maccabeo e Gionata suo fratello passarono il Giordano, e per tre giorni camminarono per il deserto.
25 where they encountered the Nabataeans, who gave them a friendly reception and told themeverything that had been happening to their brothers in Gilead,	25 Vennero incontro a loro i Nabutei che li accolsero da amici, e narraron loro tutto quel ch’era accaduto a’ loro fratelli nella Galaadltide,
26 many of whom, they said, were shut up in Bozrah and Bosor, Alema, Chaspho, Maked and Carnaim,al large fortified towns.	26 e come molti n’erano chiusi in Barasa, Bosor, Alimis, Casfor, Maget e Carnaim, tutte città grandi e forti.
27 Others were blockaded in the other towns of Gilead, and the enemy planned to attack and capturethese strongholds the very next day, and destroy all the people inside them on one day.	27 Ma anche nelle altre città della Galaaditide [dicevano] vi son prigionieri; e per domani hanno stabilito [i pagani] d’assalire queste città, e di prendere e sterminare in un sol giorno quelli [che vi sono racchiusi].
28 Judas and his army at once turned off by the desert road to Bozrah. He took the town and, having putal the males to the sword and col ected the booty, burned it down.	28 Allora Giuda col suo esercito piegò subito pel deserto di Bosor, s’impadroni della città, vi passò a fil di spada tutt' i maschi, prendendone tutte le spoglie, e la dette alle fiamme.
29 When night came, he left the place, and they continued their march until they reached the fortress.	29 La notte poi partirono di lì, verso la fortezza [di Dateman].
30 In the light of dawn they looked, and there was an innumerable horde, setting up ladders and enginesto capture the fortress; the assault was just beginning.	30 Ed all’alba, alzando gli occhi, videro una moltitudine innumerevole di gente, che portavano scale e macchine per impadronirsi della fortezza e di quelli che v’erano.
31 When Judas saw that the attack had begun and that the war cry was rising to heaven from the city,mingled with trumpet cal s and a great clamour,	31 Vide Giuda che l’assalto era cominciato, ed il rumore della battaglia saliva al cielo come suono di trombe, e grandi grida s’alzavano dalla città.
32 he said to the men of his army, 'Into battle today for your brothers!'	32 Disse al suo esercito: «Combattete oggi pei vostri fratelli ».
33 Dividing them into three commands, he advanced on the enemy's rear, with trumpets sounding andprayers shouted aloud.	33 E mosse in tre schiere alle spalle di quelli, dando flato alle trombe, e gridando in orazione.
34 The troops of Timotheus, recognising that this was Maccabaeus, fled before his advance;Maccabaeus dealt them a crushing defeat; about eight thousand of their men fel that day.	34 Quando le truppe di Timoteo conobbero che era il Maccabeo, fuggirono dinanzi a lui, e' ne fu fatta grande strage, e ne caddero in quel giorno quasi ottomila.
35 Then, wheeling on Alema, he attacked and captured it and, having killed all the males and col ectedthe booty, burned the place down.	35 Poi andò Giuda verso Masfa, l’espugnò e la prese; v’uccise tutt' i maschi, la mise a sacco, e l’incendiò.
36 From there he moved on and took Chaspho, Maked, Bosor and the remaining towns of Gilead.	36 Di lì proseguì, e prese Casbon, Maget, Bosor, e le altre città della Galaaditide.
37 After these events, Timotheus mustered another force and pitched camp opposite Raphon, on the farside of the stream-bed.	37 Dopo questi avvenimenti, Timoteo radunò un altro esercito, e s’attendò in faccia a Rafon, di là dal torrente.
38 Judas sent men to reconnoitre the camp, and these reported back as fol ows, 'With him are massedal the gentiles surrounding us, making a very numerous army,	38 Giuda mandò ad osservar quell’esercito, e tornarono a dirgli: « Son con lui tutte le nazioni dei dintorni, esercito innumerevole;
39 with Arab mercenaries as auxiliaries; they are encamped on the far side of the stream-bed, and readyto launch an attack on you.' Judas then advanced to engage them,	39 hanno condotto seco In aiuto gli Arabi, cd hanno piantato il campo di là dal torrente, pronti alla battaglia con te ». Giuda si mosse incontro a loro.
40 and was approaching the watercourse with his troops when Timotheus told the commanders of hisarmy, 'If he crosses first we shal not be able to resist him, because he wil have a great advantage over us;	40 E Timoteo disse ai capi del suo esercito: « Quando Giuda ed il suo esercito saranno giunti al torrente, se passerà egli pel primo non potremo reggere, e sarà invincibile;
41 but if he is afraid and camps on the other side of the stream, we shall cross over to him and theadvantage will then be ours.'	41 ma se esiterà a passare, e pianterà il campo di là del fiume, passiamo noi incontro a loro, e li vinceremo ».
42 As soon as Judas reached the watercourse, he posted people's scribes along it, giving them thisorder: 'Do not let anyone pitch his tent; al are to go into battle!'	42 Quando Giuda fu vicino al fiume, fermò gli scribi del popolo lungo il torrente, e dette loro quest'ordine: « Non permettete che nessuno resti indietro; ma vengano tutti alla battaglia ».
43 He was himself the first across to the enemy side, with al the people fol owing. He defeated al theopposing gentiles, who threw down their arms and ran for refuge in the sanctuary of Carnaim.	43 E passò egli pel primo, e tutto il popolo dietro a lui; e tutti quelli delle nazioni furono sbaragliati innanzi a loro, gettaron via le armi, e fuggirono nel recinto del tempio ch’era in Carnaim.
44 The Jews first captured the town and then burned down the temple with everyone inside. And soCarnaim was overthrown, and the enemy could offer no further resistance to Judas.	44 Ma Giuda occupò questa città, e bruciò il tempio con tutti quelli che v’erano dentro: Carnaim fu espugnata, e non potò reggersi contro di lui.
45 Next, Judas assembled al the Israelites living in Gilead, from the least to the greatest, with theirwives, children and belongings, an enormous muster, to take them to Judaea.	45 Allora Giuda riunì tutti gli Israeliti che erano nella terra di Galaad, dal più piccolo al più grande, con le mogli ed i figli, che formavano un esercito innumerevole, per tornare nella terra di Giuda.
46 They reached Ephron, a large town straddling the road and strongly fortified. As it was impossible toby-pass it either to right or to left, there was nothing for it but to march straight through.	46 Giunsero dunque ad Efron. Era questa una città grande, situata all'ingresso [della regione], ben fortificata, e non si poteva girarla nè a destra nè a sinistra, ma bisognava passarvi per mezzo.
47 But the people of the town denied them passage and barricaded the gates with stones.	47 Quelli che erano nella città vi si chiusero, ed ostruirono con pietre le porte. Giuda parlamentò con loro parole di pace,
48 Judas sent them a conciliatory message in these terms, 'We want to pass through your territory toreach our own; no one wil do you any harm, we only want to go through on foot.' But they would not open up forhim.	48 dicendo: «Lasciateci passare per la vostra terra, per andare nella nostra; nessuno vi farà del male, e non faremo che traversare ». Ma quelli non vollero aprire.
49 So Judas sent an order down the column for everyone to halt where he stood.	49 Allora fece bandire ai suol che ciascuno si fermasse dove era.
50 The fighting men took up their positions; Judas attacked the town al day and night, and the town fellto him.	50 Poi i più valorosi dettero l’assalto, che durò tutto il giorno e tutta la notte, e la città cadde nelle mani di Giuda.
51 He put all the males to the sword, rased the town to the ground, plundered it and marched through thetown square over the bodies of the dead.	51 Fece passare a fll di spada tutti i maschi, distrusse la città, la saccheggiò, e la traversò tutta passando sopra i cadaveri.
52 They then crossed the Jordan into the Great Plain, opposite Beth-Shean,	52 Poi passarono il Giordano, nella gran pianura che è di faccia a Betsan.
53 Judas al the time ral ying the stragglers and encouraging the people the whole way until they reachedJudaea.	53 Giuda stava alla retroguardia per tenere uniti i rimasti addietro, ed incoraggiava il popolo per tutto il viaggio, sinché giunsero nella terra di Giuda.
54 They climbed Mount Zion in joy and gladness and presented burnt offerings because they hadreturned safe and sound without having lost a single man.	54 E salirono al monte Sion con giubilo e gaudio, ed offersero olocausti, perchè nessuno di loro era perito mentre tornavano indisturbati.
55 While Judas and Jonathan were in Gilead and Simon his brother in Galilee outside Ptolemais,	55 Ma mentre Giuda e Gionata erano nella terra di Galaad e Simone suo fratello in Galilea di fronte a Tolemaide,
56 Joseph son of Zechariah, and Azariah, who were in command of the army, heard of their valiantdeeds and of the battles they had been fighting,	56 Giuseppe figlio di Zaccaria, con Azaria capo dell’esercito, seppe le felici imprese e le battaglie ivi compiute,
57 and said, 'Let us make a name for ourselves too and go and fight the nations around us.'	57 e disse: «Facciamoci anche noi un nome, ed andiamo a combattere contro le genti thè ci circondano ».
58 So they issued orders to the men under their command and marched on Jamnia.	58 E ne dette l’ordine a quelli del suo esercito, e si diressero verso Jamnia.
59 Gorgias and his men came out of the town and gave battle.	59 Ma Gorgia con le sue schiere uscì dalla città contro di loro a battaglia,
60 Joseph and Azariah were routed and pursued as far as the frontiers of Judaea. That day about twothousand Israelites lost their lives.	60 e Giuseppe ed Azaria furon messi in fuga sino a?confini della Giudea; caddero in quel giorno, del popolo d’Israele, da' duemila uomini, e in una fuga grande pel popolo;
61 Our people thus met with a great reverse, because they had not listened to Judas and his brothers,thinking that they would do something equal y valiant.	61 perchè, credendo di poter fare da bravi, non dettero ascolto a Giuda ed a' suoi fratelli.
62 They were not, however, of the same breed of men as those to whom the deliverance of Israel wasentrusted.	62 Non erano però della razza di quel forti, per mano dei quali fu fatto salvo Israele.
63 The noble Judas and his brothers, however, were held in high honour throughout Israel and among althe nations wherever their name was heard,	63 Ed i soldati di Giuda divennero famosi in Israele, e fra tutte le nazioni dove arrivava il loro nome;
64 and people thronged round to acclaim them.	64 e la gente accorreva a loro per acclamarli.
65 Judas marched out with his brothers to fight the Edomites in the country towards the south; hestormed Hebron and its dependent vil ages, threw down its fortifications and burned down its encircling towers.	65 Indi, Giuda ed i suoi fratelli si mossero, e debellarono i figli di Esau nella terra posta a mezzogiorno; ed espugnò Hebron e le sue dipendenze, e distrusse col fuoco le mura e le torri che la circondavano.
66 Leaving there, he made for the country of the Philistines and passed through Marisa.	66 Poi levò il campo, per andar nella terra degli stranieri, percorrendo Samaria.
67 Among the fal en in that day's fighting were some priests who sought to prove their courage there byjoining in the battle, a foolhardy venture.	67 In quel tempo caddero del sacerdoti in battaglia, mentre volevan fare da valorosi, e sconsigliatamente eran usciti a combattere.
68 Judas next turned on Azotus, which belonged to the Philistines; he overthrew their altars, burned thestatues of their gods and, having pil aged their towns, withdrew to Judaea.	68 Giuda piegò verso Azoto, nella terra degli stranieri; distrusse i loro altari, bruciò i simulacri de' loro dèi, saccheggiò le città, e poi ritornò nella Giudea.
