1 When the surrounding nations heard that the altar had been rebuilt and the sanctuary restored to whatit had been before, they became very angry	1 Cuando los pueblos circunvecinos supieron que había sido reconstruido el altar y restaurado como antes el santuario, se irritaron sobremanera.
2 and decided to destroy the descendants of Jacob living among them; they began to murder and evictour people.	2 Decidieron acabar con los descendientes de Jacob que entre ellos vivían y comenzaron a matar y exterminar gente del pueblo.
3 Judas made war on the sons of Esau in Idumaea, in the region of Acrabattene where they werebesieging the Israelites. He dealt them a serious blow, drove them off and despoiled them.	3 Judas movió la guerra a los hijos de Esaú en Idumea, al país de Acrabatena, porque tenían asediados a los israelitas. Les infligió fuerte derrota, les rechazó y se alzó con sus despojos.
4 He also remembered the wickedness of the sons of Baean, who were a menace and a trap for thepeople with their ambushes on the roads.	4 Recordó luego la maldad de los hijos de Baián, que eran un lazo y una trampa para el pueblo por las emboscadas que en los caminos le tendían.
5 Having blockaded them in their town and besieged them, he put them under the curse of destruction;he then set fire to their towers and burned them down with everyone inside.	5 Les obligó a encerrarse en sus torres, les puso cerco y dándolos al anatema, abrasó las torres con todos los que estaban dentro.
6 Next, he crossed over to the Ammonites where he found a strong fighting force and a numerouspeople, commanded by Timotheus.	6 Pasó a continuación a los ammonitas, donde encontró una fuerte tropa y una población numerosa cuyo jefe era Timoteo.
7 He fought many battles with them, defeated them and cut them to pieces.	7 Después de muchos combates, los derrotó y deshizo.
8 Having captured Jazer and its dependent vil ages, he retired to Judaea.	8 Ocupó Yazer y sus aldeas, y regresó a Judea.
9 Next, the gentiles of Gilead banded together to destroy the Israelites living in their territory. The latter,however, took refuge in the fortress of Dathema,	9 Los gentiles de Galaad se unieron para exterminar a los israelitas que vivían en su territorio, pero ellos se refugiaron en la fortaleza de Datemá.
10 and sent the fol owing letter to Judas and his brothers: 'The gentiles round us have bandedthemselves together against us to destroy us,	10 Enviaron cartas a Judas y sus hermanos diciéndoles: «Los gentiles que nos rodean se han unido para exterminarnos;
11 and they are preparing to storm the fortress in which we have taken refuge; Timotheus is in commandof their forces.	11 se preparan para venir a tomar la fortaleza donde nos hemos refugiado, y Timoteo está al frente de su ejército.
12 Come at once and rescue us from their clutches, for we have already suffered great losses.	12 Ven, pues, ahora a librarnos de sus manos, que muchos de entre nosotros han caído ya;
13 Al our countrymen living in Tobias' country have been killed, their women and children have beentaken into captivity, their property has been seized, and about a thousand men have been destroyed there.'	13 todos nuestros hermanos que vivían en el país de Tubías han sido muertos, llevados cautivos sus mujeres, hijos y bienes, y han perecido allí unos mil hombres».
14 While the letter was being read, other messengers arrived from Galilee with their garments torn,bearing similar news,	14 Estaban todavía leyendo las cartas, cuando otros mensajeros, con los vestidos rasgados, llegaron de Galilea con esta noticia:
15 'The people of Ptolemais, Tyre and Sidon have joined forces with the whole of gentile Galilee todestroy us!'	15 «Se han unido los de Tolemaida, Tiro, Sidón y toda la Galilea de los Gentiles para acabar con nosotros».
16 When Judas and the people heard this, they held a great assembly to decide what should be done fortheir oppressed countrymen who were under attack from their enemies.	16 Cuando Judas y el pueblo oyeron tales noticias, reunieron una gran asamblea para deliberar sobre lo que habían de hacer para socorrer a sus hermanos puestos en angustia y combatidos de enemigos.
17 Judas said to his brother Simon, 'Pick your men and go and relieve your countrymen in Galilee, whilemy brother Jonathan and I make our way into Gilead.'	17 Judas dijo a su hermano Simón: «Toma gente contigo y parte a librar a tus hermanos de Galilea; mi hermano Jonatán y yo iremos a la región de Galaad».
18 He left Joseph son of Zechariah and the people's leader Azariah with the remainder of the army inJudaea to keep guard, and gave them these orders,	18 Dejó para defensa de Judea a José, hijo de Zacarías, y a Azarías, jefe del pueblo, con el resto del ejército,
19 'You are to be responsible for our people. Do not engage the gentiles until we return.'	19 dándoles esta orden: «Estad al frente del pueblo y no entréis en batalla con los gentiles hasta que nosotros regresemos».
20 Simon was al otted three thousand men for the expedition into Galilee, Judas eight thousand forGilead.	20 Se le dieron 3.000 hombres a Simón para la campaña de Galilea y 8.000 a Judas para la de Galaad.
21 Simon advanced into Galilee, engaged the gentiles in several battles and swept all before him;	21 Simón partió para Galilea y luego de empeñar muchos combates con los gentiles, los derrotó
22 he pursued them to the gate of Ptolemais, and they lost about three thousand men, whose spoils hecol ected.	22 y los persiguió hasta la entrada de Tolemaida. Sucumbieron unos 3.000 gentiles y se llevó sus despojos.
23 With him, he took away the Jews of Galilee and Arbatta, with their wives and children and all theirpossessions, and brought them into Judaea with great rejoicing.	23 Tomó luego consigo a los judíos de Galilea y Arbattá, con sus mujeres, hijos y cuanto poseían, y en medio de una gran alegría los llevó a Judea.
24 Meanwhile Judas Maccabaeus and his brother Jonathan crossed the Jordan and made a three-days'march through the desert,	24 Por su parte, Judas Macabeo y su hermano Jonatán atravesaron el Jordán y caminaron tres jornadas por el desierto.
25 where they encountered the Nabataeans, who gave them a friendly reception and told themeverything that had been happening to their brothers in Gilead,	25 Se encontraron con los nabateos, que les acogieron amistosamente y les pusieron al tanto de lo que les ocurría a sus hermanos de la región de Galaad:
26 many of whom, they said, were shut up in Bozrah and Bosor, Alema, Chaspho, Maked and Carnaim,al large fortified towns.	26 que muchos de ellos se encontraban encerrados en Bosorá y Bosor, en Alemá, Casfó, Maqued y Carnáyim, todas ellas ciudades fuertes y grandes;
27 Others were blockaded in the other towns of Gilead, and the enemy planned to attack and capturethese strongholds the very next day, and destroy all the people inside them on one day.	27 que también los había encerrados en las demás ciudades de la región de Galaad, y que sus enemigos habían fijado el día siguiente para atacar las fortalezas, tomarlas y exterminarlos a todos en un solo día.
28 Judas and his army at once turned off by the desert road to Bozrah. He took the town and, having putal the males to the sword and col ected the booty, burned it down.	28 Inmediatamente Judas hizo que su ejército tomara el camino de Bosorá, a través del desierto; tomó la ciudad y después de pasar a filo de espada a todo varón y de saquearla por completo, la incendió.
29 When night came, he left the place, and they continued their march until they reached the fortress.	29 Partió de allí por la noche y avanzó hasta las cercanías de la fortaleza.
30 In the light of dawn they looked, and there was an innumerable horde, setting up ladders and enginesto capture the fortress; the assault was just beginning.	30 Cuando, al llegar el día, alzaron los judíos sus ojos, vieron una muchedumbre innumerable que levantaba escalas e ingenios para tomar la plaza, y había comenzado ya el ataque.
31 When Judas saw that the attack had begun and that the war cry was rising to heaven from the city,mingled with trumpet cal s and a great clamour,	31 Al ver que el ataque se había iniciado y que un inmenso griterío y sonido de trompetas se levantaba de la ciudad hasta el cielo,
32 he said to the men of his army, 'Into battle today for your brothers!'	32 Judas dijo a los hombres de su ejército: «Combatid hoy por vuestros hermanos».
33 Dividing them into three commands, he advanced on the enemy's rear, with trumpets sounding andprayers shouted aloud.	33 Y, ordenados en tres columnas, les hizo avanzar detrás del enemigo tocando las trompetas y gritando invocaciones.
34 The troops of Timotheus, recognising that this was Maccabaeus, fled before his advance;Maccabaeus dealt them a crushing defeat; about eight thousand of their men fel that day.	34 El ejército de Timoteo, al reconocer que era Macabeo, huyeron ante él, sufrieron una fuerte derrota y dejaron tendidos unos 8.000 hombres aquel día.
35 Then, wheeling on Alema, he attacked and captured it and, having killed all the males and col ectedthe booty, burned the place down.	35 Volvióse luego Judas contra Alemá. La atacó, la tomó y después de matar a todos los varones y saquearla, la dio a las llamas.
36 From there he moved on and took Chaspho, Maked, Bosor and the remaining towns of Gilead.	36 Partiendo de allí, se apoderó de Casfó, Maqued, Bosor y de las restantes ciudades de la región de Galaad.
37 After these events, Timotheus mustered another force and pitched camp opposite Raphon, on the farside of the stream-bed.	37 Después de estos acontecimientos, juntó Timoteo un nuevo ejército y acampó frente a Rafón, al otro lado del torrente.
38 Judas sent men to reconnoitre the camp, and these reported back as fol ows, 'With him are massedal the gentiles surrounding us, making a very numerous army,	38 Judas envió a reconocer el campamento y le trajeron el siguiente informe: «Todos los gentiles de nuestro alrededor se le han unido y forman un ejército considerable.
39 with Arab mercenaries as auxiliaries; they are encamped on the far side of the stream-bed, and readyto launch an attack on you.' Judas then advanced to engage them,	39 Tienen además, como auxiliares, árabes tomados a sueldo. Acampan al otro lado del torrente y están preparados para venir a atacarte». Judas salió a su encuentro.
40 and was approaching the watercourse with his troops when Timotheus told the commanders of hisarmy, 'If he crosses first we shal not be able to resist him, because he wil have a great advantage over us;	40 Cuando se aproximaba con su ejército al torrente de agua, dijo Timoteo a los capitanes de sus tropas: «Si él lo pasa primero y viene sobre nosotros, no podremos resistirle, porque nos vencerá seguramente,
41 but if he is afraid and camps on the other side of the stream, we shall cross over to him and theadvantage will then be ours.'	41 pero si muestra miedo y acampa al otro lado del río, lo atravesaremos nosotros, iremos sobre él y le venceremos».
42 As soon as Judas reached the watercourse, he posted people's scribes along it, giving them thisorder: 'Do not let anyone pitch his tent; al are to go into battle!'	42 Cuando Judas llegó al borde del torrente de agua, situó a los escribas del pueblo a la orilla y les dio esta orden: «No dejéis acampar a nadie; que todos vayan al combate».
43 He was himself the first across to the enemy side, with al the people fol owing. He defeated al theopposing gentiles, who threw down their arms and ran for refuge in the sanctuary of Carnaim.	43 Pasó él el primero contra el enemigo y toda su gente le siguió. Los gentiles todos, derrotados ante ellos, tiraron las armas y corrieron a buscar refugio en el templo de Carnáyim.
44 The Jews first captured the town and then burned down the temple with everyone inside. And soCarnaim was overthrown, and the enemy could offer no further resistance to Judas.	44 Pero los judíos tomaron la ciudad y quemaron el templo con todos los que había dentro. Carnáyim fue arrasada. Y ya nadie pudo resistir a Judas.
45 Next, Judas assembled al the Israelites living in Gilead, from the least to the greatest, with theirwives, children and belongings, an enormous muster, to take them to Judaea.	45 Judas reunió a todos los israelitas de la región de Galaad, pequeños y grandes, a sus mujeres, hijos y bienes, una inmensa muchedumbre, para llevarlos al país de Judá.
46 They reached Ephron, a large town straddling the road and strongly fortified. As it was impossible toby-pass it either to right or to left, there was nothing for it but to march straight through.	46 Llegaron a Efrón, ciudad importante y muy fuerte, situada en el camino. Necesariamente tenían que pasar por ella, por no haber posibilidad de desviarse ni a la derecha ni a la izquierda.
47 But the people of the town denied them passage and barricaded the gates with stones.	47 Pero los habitantes les negaron el paso y bloquearon las entradas con piedras.
48 Judas sent them a conciliatory message in these terms, 'We want to pass through your territory toreach our own; no one wil do you any harm, we only want to go through on foot.' But they would not open up forhim.	48 Judas les envió un mensaje en son de paz diciéndoles: «Pasaremos por vuestro país para llegar al nuestro; nadie os hará mal alguno; no limitaremos a pasar a pie». Pero no quisieron abrirle.
49 So Judas sent an order down the column for everyone to halt where he stood.	49 Entonces Judas hizo anunciar por el ejército que cada uno tomara posición donde se encontrara.
50 The fighting men took up their positions; Judas attacked the town al day and night, and the town fellto him.	50 La gente de guerra tomó posición y Judas atacó la ciudad todo aquel día y toda la noche, hasta que cayó en sus manos.
51 He put all the males to the sword, rased the town to the ground, plundered it and marched through thetown square over the bodies of the dead.	51 Hizo pasar a filo de espada a todos los varones, la arrasó, la saqueó, y atravesó la ciudad por encima de los cadáveres.
52 They then crossed the Jordan into the Great Plain, opposite Beth-Shean,	52 Pasaron el Jordán para entrar en la Gran Llanura frente a Bet San.
53 Judas al the time ral ying the stragglers and encouraging the people the whole way until they reachedJudaea.	53 Judas fue durante toda la marcha recogiendo a los rezagados y animando al pueblo hasta llegar a la tierra de Judá.
54 They climbed Mount Zion in joy and gladness and presented burnt offerings because they hadreturned safe and sound without having lost a single man.	54 Subieron al monte Sión con alborozo y alegría y ofrecieron holocaustos por haber regresado felizmente sin haber perdido a ninguno de los suyos.
55 While Judas and Jonathan were in Gilead and Simon his brother in Galilee outside Ptolemais,	55 Cuando Judas y Jonatán estaban en el país de Galaad, y su hermano Simón en Galilea, frente a Tolemaida,
56 Joseph son of Zechariah, and Azariah, who were in command of the army, heard of their valiantdeeds and of the battles they had been fighting,	56 José, hijo de Zacarías, y Azarías, jefes del ejército, al oír las proezas y combates que aquéllos habían realizado,
57 and said, 'Let us make a name for ourselves too and go and fight the nations around us.'	57 se dijeron: «Hagamos nosotros también célebre nuestro nombre saliendo a combatir a los gentiles de los alrededores».
58 So they issued orders to the men under their command and marched on Jamnia.	58 Y dieron orden a la tropa que estaba bajo su mando de ir sobre Yamnia.
59 Gorgias and his men came out of the town and gave battle.	59 Gorgias salió de la ciudad con su gente para irles al encuentro y entrar en batalla.
60 Joseph and Azariah were routed and pursued as far as the frontiers of Judaea. That day about twothousand Israelites lost their lives.	60 Y José y Azarías fueron derrotados y perseguidos hasta la frontera de Judea. Sucumbieron aquel día alrededor de 2.000 hombres del pueblo de Israel.
61 Our people thus met with a great reverse, because they had not listened to Judas and his brothers,thinking that they would do something equal y valiant.	61 Sobrevino este grave revés al pueblo por no haber obedecido a Judas y sus hermanos, creyéndose capaces de grandes hazañas.
62 They were not, however, of the same breed of men as those to whom the deliverance of Israel wasentrusted.	62 Pero no eran ellos de aquella casta de hombres a quienes estaba confiada la salvación de Israel.
63 The noble Judas and his brothers, however, were held in high honour throughout Israel and among althe nations wherever their name was heard,	63 El valiente Judas y sus hermanos alcanzaron gran honor ante todo Israel y todas las naciones a donde su nombre llegaba.
64 and people thronged round to acclaim them.	64 Las muchedumbres se agolpaban a su alrededor para aclamarles.
65 Judas marched out with his brothers to fight the Edomites in the country towards the south; hestormed Hebron and its dependent vil ages, threw down its fortifications and burned down its encircling towers.	65 Salió Judas con sus hermanos a campaña contra los hijos de Esaú, al país del mediodía. Tomó Hebrón y sus aldeas, arrasó sus murallas y prendió fuego a las torres de su contorno.
66 Leaving there, he made for the country of the Philistines and passed through Marisa.	66 Partió luego en dirección al país de los filisteos y atravesó Marisá.
67 Among the fal en in that day's fighting were some priests who sought to prove their courage there byjoining in the battle, a foolhardy venture.	67 Al querer señalarse tomando parte imprudentemente en el combate, cayeron aquel día algunos sacerdotes.
68 Judas next turned on Azotus, which belonged to the Philistines; he overthrew their altars, burned thestatues of their gods and, having pil aged their towns, withdrew to Judaea.	68 Dobló luego Judas sobre Azoto, territorio de los filisteos, y destruyó sus altares, dio fuego a las imágenes de sus dioses y saqueó sus ciudades. Después, regresó al país de Judá.
