1 Maccabees 14

NEW JERUSALEM	SAGRADA BIBLIA
1 In the year 172, King Demetrius assembled his forces and marched into Media to raise help for thefight against Trypho.	1 Pelo ano cento e setenta e dois, o rei Demétrio reuniu suas tropas e penetrou na Média, para aí organizar um exército de socorro na sua luta contra Trifon.
2 When Arsaces king of Persia and Media heard that Demetrius had entered his territory, he sent one ofhis generals to capture him alive.	2 Mas Arsaces, rei da Pérsia e da Média, informado de que Demétrio havia entrado no seu território, enviou um de seus generais para pegá-lo vivo.
3 The general defeated the army of Demetrius, seized him and brought him to Arsaces, who imprisonedhim.	3 Partiu, pois, este, desbaratou o exército de Demétrio e apoderou-se de sua pessoa. Enviou-o a Arsaces, e este o encarcerou.
4 The country was at peace throughout the days of Simon. He sought the good of his nation and theywere wel pleased with his authority, as with his magnificence, throughout his life.	4 Na Judéia reinou a paz, enquanto viveu Simão. Procurou o bem-estar de seu povo, e este se agradou do seu poder e reputação.
5 To crown his titles to glory, he took Joppa and made it a harbour, gaining access to the MediterraneanIsles.	5 Com toda a glória que adquiriu, tomou Jope como porto e construiu um acesso para as ilhas do mar.
6 He enlarged the frontiers of his nation, keeping his mastery over the homeland,	6 Alargou as fronteiras de seu povo e estendeu sua autoridade sobre todo o país.
7 resettling a host of captives. He conquered Gezer, Beth-Zur and the Citadel, ridding them of everyimpurity, and no one could resist him.	7 Repatriou muitos dos judeus prisioneiros do estrangeiro, apoderou-se de Gazara, de Betsur e da cidadela de Jerusalém, que purificou de suas manchas, e ninguém ousava opor-lhe resistência.

9 The elders sat at ease in the squares, all their talk was of their prosperity; the young men woresplendid armour.	9 Os velhos assentavam-se nas praças públicas e entretinham-se com o bem comum; os jovens revestiam-se com troféus e com equipamentos de guerra.
10 He kept the towns supplied with provisions and furnished with fortifications, until his fame resoundedto the ends of the earth.	10 Simão forneceu víveres às cidades e tomou resoluções para edificar praças fortes, de modo que em toda parte, até as extremidades da terra, celebrava-se seu nome.
11 He established peace in the land, and Israel knew great joy.	11 Estabeleceu a paz em seu país, e todo o Israel exultava de alegria.
12 Each man sat under his own vine and his own fig tree, and there was no one to make them afraid.	12 Cada um podia assentar-se sob sua parreira ou figueira sem recear o inimigo.
13 No enemy was left in the land to fight them, the very kings of those times had been crushed.	13 Não houve ninguém para atacá-los, e os reis, nessa época, foram abatidos.
14 He encouraged the afflicted members of his people, suppressing every wicked man and renegade.He strove to observe the Law,	14 Protegeu os humildes entre seu povo, zelou pela lei e exterminou os ímpios e os perversos.
15 and gave new splendour to the Temple, enriching it with many sacred vessels.	15 Contribuiu para o esplendor do templo e enriqueceu o tesouro.
16 When it became known in Rome and as far as Sparta that Jonathan was dead, people were deeplygrieved.	16 A morte de Jônatas foi bem depressa conhecida em Roma e até em Esparta, provocando grandes pesares.
17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon had succeeded him as high priest and was masterof the country and the cities in it,	17 Mas, logo que os romanos e os espartanos souberam que seu irmão Simão se tinha tornado sumo sacerdote em seu lugar e governava o país com as cidades que ali se achavam,
18 they wrote to him on bronze tablets to renew the treaty of friendship and al iance which they hadmade with his brothers, Judas and Jonathan,	18 escreveram-lhe em tabuletas de bronze para renovar a amizade e a aliança, outrora concluída com seus irmãos Judas e Jônatas.
19 and the document was read out before the assembly in Jerusalem.	19 Essas mensagens foram lidas diante da assembléia em Jerusalém e eis a cópia daquela que enviaram os espartanos:
20 This is the copy of the letter sent by the Spartans: 'The rulers and the city of Sparta, to Simon thehigh priest and to the elders and priests and the rest of the people of the Jews, greetings.	20 Os arcontes da cidade de Esparta ao sumo sacerdote Simão, aos anciãos, aos sacerdotes e ao povo judeu, seu irmão, saúde!
21 'The ambassadors whom you sent to our people have informed us of your glory and prosperity, andwe are delighted with their visit.	21 Os mensageiros que enviastes ao nosso povo contaram-nos vossa celebridade e glória, e nós nos regozijamos com sua chegada.
22 We have recorded their declarations in the minutes of our public assemblies, as fol ows, "Numeniusson of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, ambassadors of the Jews, came to us to renew their friendshipwith us.	22 Nós consignamos, como segue, a proposta que eles fizeram às deliberações do povo: Numênio, filho de Antíoco, e Antípatro, filho de Jasão, vieram a nós, da parte dos judeus, para renovar sua amizade conosco.
23 And it was the people's pleasure to receive these personages with honour and to deposit a copy oftheir statements in the public archives, so that the people of Sparta might preserve a record of them. A copy wasalso made for Simon the high priest." '	23 Pareceu bem ao povo recebê-los com honra e depositar uma cópia de suas palavras nos arquivos públicos, para que ficasse na memória do povo de Esparta; e sobre isso enviamos um cópia a Simão, sumo sacerdote.
24 After this, Simon sent Numenius to Rome as the bearer of a large golden shield weighing a thousandmina, to confirm the alliance with them.	24 Em seguida, Simão enviou Numênio a Roma, com um grande escudo de ouro, que pesava mil minas, para confirmação da aliança com os romanos.
25 When these events were reported to our people, they said, 'What mark of appreciation shal we giveto Simon and his sons?	25 Quando o povo foi informado disso tudo, disse: Que sinal de reconhecimento daremos a Simão e a seus filhos?
26 He stood firm, he and his brothers and his father's house: he fought off the enemies of Israel andsecured its freedom.' So they recorded an inscription on bronze tablets and set it up on pil ars on Mount Zion.	26 Ele mesmo, seus irmãos e a casa de seu pai mostraram-se valorosos, venceram os inimigos de Israel e asseguraram-lhe a liberdade. 28 'In Asaramel, in the Grand Assembly of priests and people, of princes of the nation and of elders ofthe country: 'We are acquainted with the matters fol owing:	28 na grande assembléia dos sacerdotes, do povo, dos chefes da nação e dos anciãos do país, foi declarado isto: No momento em que as guerras renasciam sem cessar no país,
29 'When there was almost incessant fighting in the country Simon, son of Mattathias, a priest of theline of Joarib, and his brothers courted danger and withstood their nation's enemies to safeguard the integrity oftheir sanctuary and of the Law, and so brought their nation great glory;	29 Simão filho de Matatias, descendente de Jarib, e seus irmãos, expuseram-se ao perigo e resistiram aos inimigos de sua raça, para salvar o templo e a lei, levando seu povo a uma grande glória.
30 'For when, Jonathan having ral ied his nation and become its high priest and having then beengathered to his ancestors,	30 Jônatas reuniu seu povo e tornou-se o sumo sacerdote; depois foi juntar-se aos seus mortos.
31 the enemy planned to invade the country, intending to devastate their territory and to lay hands ontheir sanctuary,	31 Os inimigos quiseram invadir o país para devastá-lo e lançar a mão sobre os lugares santos,
32 Simon next came forward to fight for his nation: spending much of his personal wealth on arming hisnation's fighting men and on providing their pay;	32 mas então se levantou Simão. 33 fortifying the towns of Judaea, as wel as Beth-Zur on the Judaean frontier where the enemy arsenalhad formerly been, and stationing in it a garrison of Jewish soldiers;	33 Fortificou as cidades da Judéia: Betsur, que se acha na fronteira, outrora arsenal do inimigo, onde ele estabeleceu uma guarnição judia;
34 fortifying Joppa on the coast, and Gezer on the borders of Azotus, a place formerly inhabited by theenemy, founding a Jewish colony there, and providing the settlers with everything they needed to set them ontheir feet;	34 Jope, que se acha na costa; Gazara, na região de Azot, outrora povoada de inimigos, que ele substituiu por judeus. E muniu todas estas cidades com o que era necessário para sua defesa.
35 'In consequence of which, the people, aware of Simon's loyalty and of the glory which he wasdetermined to win for his nation, have made him their ethnarch and high priest, for all his services and for theintegrity and loyalty which he has shown towards his nation, and for having by every means sought to enhancehis people's power;	35 O povo viu o procedimento de Simão e a glória que ele queria adquirir para a sua raça; escolheu-o para chefe e sumo sacerdote, por causa de tudo o que ele havia efetuado, pela justiça e fidelidade que guardou à sua pátria e porque procurava de todo modo exaltá-la.
36 'It has fal en to him in his time to expel the foreigners from his country, including those in the City ofDavid in Jerusalem, who had converted it into a citadel for their own use, from which they would sal y out todefile the surroundings of the sanctuary and to violate its sacred character;	36 Sob sua autoridade o povo tinha chegado a rechaçar os gentios de seu território e a expulsar os ocupantes da cidade de Davi em Jerusalém, lugar no qual haviam estabelecido uma cidadela e da qual saíam para manchar os acessos do templo e profanar gravemente a santidade.
37 to station Jewish soldiers there instead for the security of the country and the city; and to heightenthe wal s of Jerusalem;	37 Simão colocou ali uma guarnição judia, fortificou-a para proteger o país e a cidade, e ergueu os muros de Jerusalém.
38 'And since King Demetrius has heard that the Romans call the Jews their friends, al ies and brothers,	38 Depois disso o rei Demétrio confirmou Simão no cargo de sumo sacerdote,
39 and that they have given an honourable reception to Simon's ambassadors, and, furthermore,	39 contou-o no número de seus amigos e demonstrou-lhe uma grande consideração.
40 that the Jews and priests are happy that Simon should, pending the advent of a genuine prophet, betheir ethnarch and high priest for life	40 Com efeito, ele soube que os romanos davam aos judeus o nome de irmãos, de amigos e de aliados e que haviam recebido com honras os enviados de Simão.
41 therefore he has confirmed him in the high-priestly office, has raised him to the rank of Friend andhas showered great honours on him, also confirming him as their commander-in-chief,	41 Soube também que os judeus e seus sacerdotes haviam consentido que Simão se tornasse seu chefe e sumo sacerdote, perpetuamente, até a vinda de um profeta fiel,
42 with the right to appoint officials to oversee the fabric of the sanctuary and to administer the country,munitions and fortresses;	42 que tomasse o comando do exército, cuidasse do culto, designasse superintendentes para os trabalhos, as regiões, os armamentos e as fortificações;
43 he is to have personal charge of the sanctuary, and to be obeyed by al ; al official documents in thecountry must be drawn up in his name; and he may assume the purple and may wear golden ornaments;	43 que se ocupasse do culto e fosse obedecido por todos; que, no país, todos os atos fossem escritos em seu nome; e que andasse vestido de púrpura e trouxesse fivelas de ouro.
44 'Furthermore, it is against the law for any member of the public or of the priesthood to contraveneany of these enactments or to contest his decisions, or to convene a meeting anywhere in the country without hispermission, or to assume the purple or wear the golden brooch;	44 Não seria permitido a ninguém do povo ou dos sacerdotes rejeitar uma só de suas disposições, contradizer suas ordens, convocar uma assembléia no país sem o seu assentimento, vestir-se com púrpura ou usar uma fivela de ouro.
45 and anyone acting contrary to, or rejecting any article of, these enactments is liable to punishment;	45 Quem quer que agisse contra essas decisões ou violasse uma, seria culpado.
46 'And since the people have unanimously agreed to grant Simon the right to act as aforesaid, and	46 Aprouve ao povo permitir a Simão agir conforme essas disposições.
47 since Simon, for his part, has given his assent, and has consented to assume the high-priestly officeand to be commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews and their priests, and to preside over al :	47 Simão aceitou. Prontificou-se a ser sumo pontífice, chefe do exército, governador dos judeus e dos sacerdotes e exercer autoridade sobre todos.
48 'So, be it now enacted: that this record be inscribed on bronze tablets and be erected at someconspicuous place within the precincts of the Temple,	48 Foi ordenado que essa inscrição fosse gravada em tábuas de bronze e colocada num lugar visível da galeria do templo,
49 and that copies be deposited in the Treasury for Simon and his descendants.'	49 ao passo que uma cópia seria depositada na sala do tesouro, à disposição de Simão e de seus filhos.
