1 Maccabees 14

NEW JERUSALEM	EL LIBRO DEL PUEBLO DE DIOS
1 In the year 172, King Demetrius assembled his forces and marched into Media to raise help for thefight against Trypho.	1 El año ciento setenta y dos el rey Demetrio reunió sus tropas y se dirigió a Media, a fin de obtener ayuda para combatir a Trifón.
2 When Arsaces king of Persia and Media heard that Demetrius had entered his territory, he sent one ofhis generals to capture him alive.	2 Arsaces, rey de Persia y Media, al saber que Demetrio había penetrado en su territorio, envió a uno de sus generales para capturarlo vivo.
3 The general defeated the army of Demetrius, seized him and brought him to Arsaces, who imprisonedhim.	3 Este partió y derrotó al ejército de Demetrio; lo tomó prisionero y lo llevó ante Arsaces, el cual lo hizo encarcelar.
4 The country was at peace throughout the days of Simon. He sought the good of his nation and theywere wel pleased with his authority, as with his magnificence, throughout his life.	4 Mientras vivió Simón, el país de Judá gozó de paz. El procuró el bienestar de la nación; su autoridad y su magnificencia fueron siempre aceptadas por todos.
5 To crown his titles to glory, he took Joppa and made it a harbour, gaining access to the MediterraneanIsles.	5 Añadió a sus muchas acciones gloriosas, la conquista de Jope como puerto, y abrió una salida hacia las islas del mar.
6 He enlarged the frontiers of his nation, keeping his mastery over the homeland,	6 Extendió las fronteras de su nación y tuvo el país en sus manos.
7 resettling a host of captives. He conquered Gezer, Beth-Zur and the Citadel, ridding them of everyimpurity, and no one could resist him.	7 Repartió numerosos cautivos; conquistó Gázara, Betsur y la Ciudadela, y las purificó de toda impureza, sin encontrar ninguna resistencia.

11 He established peace in the land, and Israel knew great joy.	11 Restableció la paz en su nación, con gran regocijo de Israel:
12 Each man sat under his own vine and his own fig tree, and there was no one to make them afraid.	12 cada uno se sentó bajo su parra y su higuera sin que nadie los inquietara.
13 No enemy was left in the land to fight them, the very kings of those times had been crushed.	13 Los enemigos desaparecieron del país y en aquellos días fueron destrozados los reyes.
14 He encouraged the afflicted members of his people, suppressing every wicked man and renegade.He strove to observe the Law,	14 Amparó a los humildes de su pueblo, observó fielmente la Ley y eliminó a los impíos y a los malvados.
15 and gave new splendour to the Temple, enriching it with many sacred vessels.	15 Dio nuevo esplendor al Templo y lo enriqueció con muchos vasos sagrados.
16 When it became known in Rome and as far as Sparta that Jonathan was dead, people were deeplygrieved.	16 Cuando se supo en Roma y en Esparta que Jonatán había muerto, lo sintieron mucho.
17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon had succeeded him as high priest and was masterof the country and the cities in it,	17 Pero al enterarse que su hermano Simón lo había sucedido como Sumo Sacerdote y había asumido el gobierno del país y de sus ciudades,

20 This is the copy of the letter sent by the Spartans: 'The rulers and the city of Sparta, to Simon thehigh priest and to the elders and priests and the rest of the people of the Jews, greetings.	20 Esta es la copia de la carta enviada para los espartanos: «Los magistrados y la ciudad de los espartanos saludan al Sumo Sacerdote Simón, a los ancianos, a los sacerdotes y al resto del Pueblo judío, nuestros hermanos.
21 'The ambassadors whom you sent to our people have informed us of your glory and prosperity, andwe are delighted with their visit.	21 Los embajadores enviados a nuestro pueblo nos han informado acerca de la gloria y el prestigio de ustedes. Por eso nos hemos alegrado de su venida.
22 We have recorded their declarations in the minutes of our public assemblies, as fol ows, "Numeniusson of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, ambassadors of the Jews, came to us to renew their friendshipwith us.	22 Hemos registrado sus declaraciones en las actas del pueblo en los siguientes términos: Numenio, hijo de Antíoco, y Antípatros, hijo de Jasón, embajadores de los judíos, se han presentado para renovar su amistad con nosotros.
23 And it was the people's pleasure to receive these personages with honour and to deposit a copy oftheir statements in the public archives, so that the people of Sparta might preserve a record of them. A copy wasalso made for Simon the high priest." 24 After this, Simon sent Numenius to Rome as the bearer of a large golden shield weighing a thousandmina, to confirm the alliance with them.	24 Después, Simón envió a Roma a Numenio con un gran escudo de oro que pesaba mil minas, para confirmar el pacto con ellos.
25 When these events were reported to our people, they said, 'What mark of appreciation shal we giveto Simon and his sons?	25 Al enterarse de estas cosas, el pueblo dijo: «¿Cómo expresaremos nuestro reconocimiento a Simón y a sus hijos?
26 He stood firm, he and his brothers and his father's house: he fought off the enemies of Israel andsecured its freedom.' So they recorded an inscription on bronze tablets and set it up on pil ars on Mount Zion.	26 Porque tanto él como sus hermanos y toda la familia de su padre han combatido con firmeza y expulsado a los enemigos de Israel, y le han asegurado la libertad». Entonces hicieron grabar una inscripción en planchas de bronce y las fijaron sobre unas columnas en el monte Sión.

28 'In Asaramel, in the Grand Assembly of priests and people, of princes of the nation and of elders ofthe country: 'We are acquainted with the matters fol owing:	28 en la gran asamblea de los sacerdotes, del pueblo, de los príncipes de la nación y de los ancianos del país, se nos ha notificado lo siguiente:
29 'When there was almost incessant fighting in the country Simon, son of Mattathias, a priest of theline of Joarib, and his brothers courted danger and withstood their nation's enemies to safeguard the integrity oftheir sanctuary and of the Law, and so brought their nation great glory;	29 En los incesantes combates librados en nuestro país, Simón, hijo de Matatías, descendiente de la familia de Joarib, y sus hermanos, afrontaron el peligro y se opusieron a los enemigos de su patria a fin de preservar su Santuario y su Ley: así cubrieron de gloria su nación.
30 'For when, Jonathan having ral ied his nation and become its high priest and having then beengathered to his ancestors,	30 Jonatán unificó a su nación y llegó a ser Sumo Sacerdote, hasta que fue a reunirse con sus padres.
31 the enemy planned to invade the country, intending to devastate their territory and to lay hands ontheir sanctuary,	31 Cuando los enemigos quisieron invadir el país para devastarlo y levantar su mano contra el Santuario,
32 Simon next came forward to fight for his nation: spending much of his personal wealth on arming hisnation's fighting men and on providing their pay;	32 surgió Simón y combatió por su pueblo. El invirtió gran parte de su fortuna en equipar a los soldados de su nación y pagarles el sueldo;
33 fortifying the towns of Judaea, as wel as Beth-Zur on the Judaean frontier where the enemy arsenalhad formerly been, and stationing in it a garrison of Jewish soldiers;	33 fortificó las ciudades de Judea y la ciudad fronteriza de Betsur, donde antes estaba el arsenal enemigo, y estableció allí una guarnición judía.
34 fortifying Joppa on the coast, and Gezer on the borders of Azotus, a place formerly inhabited by theenemy, founding a Jewish colony there, and providing the settlers with everything they needed to set them ontheir feet;	34 También fortificó a Jope, en la orilla del mar, y al Gázara en la frontera de Azoto, donde antes habitaban los enemigos, y estableció en ella una población judía, proveyéndola de todo lo necesario para su mantenimiento.
35 'In consequence of which, the people, aware of Simon's loyalty and of the glory which he wasdetermined to win for his nation, have made him their ethnarch and high priest, for all his services and for theintegrity and loyalty which he has shown towards his nation, and for having by every means sought to enhancehis people's power;	35 El pueblo, al ver la lealtad de Simón y cómo se interesaba por la gloria de su nación, lo constituyó su jefe y Sumo Sacerdote por todos los servicios que había prestado, por la justicia y la fidelidad que manifestó hacia su nación y por haber buscado de todas las formas posibles la exaltación de su pueblo.
36 'It has fal en to him in his time to expel the foreigners from his country, including those in the City ofDavid in Jerusalem, who had converted it into a citadel for their own use, from which they would sal y out todefile the surroundings of the sanctuary and to violate its sacred character;	36 En su tiempo y bajo su conducción, se logró expulsar a los extranjeros del país, en especial, a los que se encontraban en la Ciudad de David, en Jerusalén. Allí habían construido una Ciudadela, de la que salían para profanar los alrededores del Santuario causando graves ultrajes a su santidad.
37 to station Jewish soldiers there instead for the security of the country and the city; and to heightenthe wal s of Jerusalem;	37 Simón puso en ella soldados judíos, la fortificó para seguridad del país y de la ciudad, y elevó los muros de Jerusalén.
38 'And since King Demetrius has heard that the Romans call the Jews their friends, al ies and brothers,	38 Por los motivos, el rey Demetrio lo confirmó en el sumo sacerdocio
39 and that they have given an honourable reception to Simon's ambassadors, and, furthermore,	39 y lo hizo uno de sus Amigos, colmándolo de grandes honores.
40 that the Jews and priests are happy that Simon should, pending the advent of a genuine prophet, betheir ethnarch and high priest for life	40 El se había enterado, en efecto, que los romanos llamaban a los judíos amigos, aliados y hermanos, y que habían recibido con todos los honores a los embajadores de Simón.

42 with the right to appoint officials to oversee the fabric of the sanctuary and to administer the country,munitions and fortresses;	42 que fuera asimismo su comandante, que se ocupara del lugar santo y designara por sí mismo a los encargados de los trabajos, de la administración del país, de los asuntos militares y de las plazas fuertes;
43 he is to have personal charge of the sanctuary, and to be obeyed by al ; al official documents in thecountry must be drawn up in his name; and he may assume the purple and may wear golden ornaments;	43 que cuidara de las cosas santas y fuera obedecido por todos; que todos los documentos del país se redactaran en su nombre y que se vistiera de púrpura y llevara insignias de oro.
44 'Furthermore, it is against the law for any member of the public or of the priesthood to contraveneany of these enactments or to contest his decisions, or to convene a meeting anywhere in the country without hispermission, or to assume the purple or wear the golden brooch;	44 A nadie del pueblo ni de los sacerdotes le estará permitido violar estas disposiciones, contradecir sus órdenes, celebrar asambleas en el país sin su autorización, vestir de púrpura o llevar un prendedor de oro.
45 and anyone acting contrary to, or rejecting any article of, these enactments is liable to punishment;	45 Todo el que obre contrariamente a estas decisiones, o viole alguna de ellas, será pasible de sanción.
46 'And since the people have unanimously agreed to grant Simon the right to act as aforesaid, and	46 El pueblo entero estuvo de acuerdo en conceder a Simón el derecho de obrar conforme a estas disposiciones.
47 since Simon, for his part, has given his assent, and has consented to assume the high-priestly officeand to be commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews and their priests, and to preside over al :	47 Simón aceptó, y consintió en ejercer el sumo sacerdocio, en ser comandante y etnarca del Pueblo judío y de los sacerdotes, y en ponerse al frente de ellos».
48 'So, be it now enacted: that this record be inscribed on bronze tablets and be erected at someconspicuous place within the precincts of the Temple,	48 Se decidió que este documento fuera grabado en planchas de bronce, que estas fueran colocadas cerca del Santuario, en un lugar visible,
49 and that copies be deposited in the Treasury for Simon and his descendants.'	49 y que se guardaran copias en el Tesoro del Templo a disposición de Simón y de sus hijos.
