1 Maccabees 14

NEW JERUSALEM	BIBLES DES PEUPLES
1 In the year 172, King Demetrius assembled his forces and marched into Media to raise help for thefight against Trypho.	1 En l’an 172, le roi Démétrius rassembla ses forces et partit en Médie pour y recruter des troupes auxiliaires, car il voulait combattre Tryphon.
2 When Arsaces king of Persia and Media heard that Demetrius had entered his territory, he sent one ofhis generals to capture him alive.	2 Arsace, roi de Perse et de Médie, apprit que Démétrius était entré sur son territoire, et il envoya un de ses généraux pour le prendre vivant.
3 The general defeated the army of Demetrius, seized him and brought him to Arsaces, who imprisonedhim.	3 Celui-ci se mit en route, écrasa la colonne de Démétrius et mit la main sur lui; il le conduisit à Arsace qui le fit jeter en prison.
4 The country was at peace throughout the days of Simon. He sought the good of his nation and theywere wel pleased with his authority, as with his magnificence, throughout his life.	4 Le pays fut ainsi en paix durant tout le règne de Simon. Il rechercha le bien de son peuple et durant tous ses jours, le peuple apprécia son autorité et sa renommée.
5 To crown his titles to glory, he took Joppa and made it a harbour, gaining access to the MediterraneanIsles.	5 Il ajouta à ses autres titres de gloire la prise de Joppé; il en fit un port qui lui ouvrait la route des îles de la mer.
6 He enlarged the frontiers of his nation, keeping his mastery over the homeland,	6 Il recula les frontières de sa nation et devint le maître du pays.
7 resettling a host of captives. He conquered Gezer, Beth-Zur and the Citadel, ridding them of everyimpurity, and no one could resist him.	7 Il fit revenir un grand nombre de prisonniers, il s’empara de Gazer, de Beth-Sour et de la Citadelle; il en retira toutes les impuretés et plus personne ne put lui résister.
8 The people farmed their land in peace; the land gave its produce, the trees of the plain their fruit.	8 Chacun travaillait ses champs en paix, le sol donnait ses produits et les arbres des champs leurs fruits.
9 The elders sat at ease in the squares, all their talk was of their prosperity; the young men woresplendid armour.	9 Assis sur les places publiques, les vieillards parlaient de la prospérité du pays et les jeunes gens aimaient à revêtir des habits de guerre.
10 He kept the towns supplied with provisions and furnished with fortifications, until his fame resoundedto the ends of the earth.	10 Simon procura aux villes des vivres et tout ce qui était nécessaire à leur défense; sa renommée atteignit jusqu’aux extrémités de la terre.
11 He established peace in the land, and Israel knew great joy.	11 Il rendit la paix au pays et Israël connut du bon temps.
12 Each man sat under his own vine and his own fig tree, and there was no one to make them afraid.	12 Chacun put s’asseoir sous sa vigne ou son figuier, nul ne les inquiétait.
13 No enemy was left in the land to fight them, the very kings of those times had been crushed.	13 On avait cessé de les attaquer dans leur pays, les rois en ce temps-là avaient été vaincus.
14 He encouraged the afflicted members of his people, suppressing every wicked man and renegade.He strove to observe the Law,	14 Simon fut le soutien des humbles de son peuple; il était zélé pour la Loi, il fit disparaître les renégats comme les méchants.
15 and gave new splendour to the Temple, enriching it with many sacred vessels.	15 Il redonna au Temple sa gloire et multiplia les objets sacrés.
16 When it became known in Rome and as far as Sparta that Jonathan was dead, people were deeplygrieved.	16 Lorsqu’on apprit à Rome et à Sparte la mort de Jonathan, tous en furent profondément peinés;
17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon had succeeded him as high priest and was masterof the country and the cities in it,	17 mais lorsqu’ils surent que son frère Simon était devenu grand prêtre à sa place, qu’il était maître de tout le pays et de toutes les villes qui s’y trouvent,
18 they wrote to him on bronze tablets to renew the treaty of friendship and al iance which they hadmade with his brothers, Judas and Jonathan,	18 ils lui écrivirent sur des tables de bronze pour renouveler avec lui l’alliance et l’amitié qu’ils avaient faites avec Judas et Jonathan, ses frères.
19 and the document was read out before the assembly in Jerusalem.	19 On lut ce document en présence de toute l’assemblée à Jérusalem, et voici la copie de la lettre que les Spartiates envoyèrent:
20 This is the copy of the letter sent by the Spartans: 'The rulers and the city of Sparta, to Simon thehigh priest and to the elders and priests and the rest of the people of the Jews, greetings.	20 “Les chefs des Spartiates et la cité saluent le grand prêtre Simon, les anciens, les prêtres, et le reste du peuple des Juifs.
21 'The ambassadors whom you sent to our people have informed us of your glory and prosperity, andwe are delighted with their visit.	21 Les ambassadeurs que vous avez envoyés à notre peuple nous ont parlé de votre gloire et votre prospérité. Nous avons été heureux de leur visite,
22 We have recorded their declarations in the minutes of our public assemblies, as fol ows, "Numeniusson of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, ambassadors of the Jews, came to us to renew their friendshipwith us.	22 et voici comment nous avons enregistré leur déclaration sur les comptes-rendus de notre peuple: Nouménios fils d’Antiocos, et Antipater fils de Jason, ambassadeurs des Juifs, sont venus chez nous pour renouveler l’amitié avec nous.
23 And it was the people's pleasure to receive these personages with honour and to deposit a copy oftheir statements in the public archives, so that the people of Sparta might preserve a record of them. A copy wasalso made for Simon the high priest." '	23 Le peuple s’est fait un plaisir de recevoir ces hommes avec honneur et de déposer la copie de leur discours dans les archives publiques, pour que le peuple de Sparte en garde la mémoire; nous en avons fait faire cette copie pour le grand prêtre Simon.”
24 After this, Simon sent Numenius to Rome as the bearer of a large golden shield weighing a thousandmina, to confirm the alliance with them.	24 Simon envoya alors à Rome Nouménios avec un grand bouclier d’or pesant plus de 500 kilos, pour confirmer l’alliance avec les Romains.
25 When these events were reported to our people, they said, 'What mark of appreciation shal we giveto Simon and his sons?	25 En apprenant tout cela, le peuple dit: “Comment pourrons-nous témoigner notre reconnaissance à Simon et à ses fils?
26 He stood firm, he and his brothers and his father's house: he fought off the enemies of Israel andsecured its freedom.' So they recorded an inscription on bronze tablets and set it up on pil ars on Mount Zion.	26 Lui, ses frères, et la maison de son père ont été notre appui: ils ont combattu et repoussé les ennemis d’Israël, ils lui ont assuré la liberté.” Ils gravèrent donc une inscription sur des tablettes de bronze qu’on fixa sur une colonne sur le mont Sion.
27 This is a copy of the text: 'The eighteenth of Elul, in the year 172, being the third year of Simon,eminent high priest:	27 En voici la copie: “Le 18 du mois d’Éloul, en l’an 172, en la troisième année du grand prêtre Simon, dans la cour intérieure du Temple,
28 'In Asaramel, in the Grand Assembly of priests and people, of princes of the nation and of elders ofthe country: 'We are acquainted with the matters fol owing:	28 les prêtres et le peuple, les princes de la nation et les anciens du pays ont tenu une grande assemblée. Ils ont publié ce décret:
29 'When there was almost incessant fighting in the country Simon, son of Mattathias, a priest of theline of Joarib, and his brothers courted danger and withstood their nation's enemies to safeguard the integrity oftheir sanctuary and of the Law, and so brought their nation great glory;	29 Simon fils de Mattathias, descendant des fils de Yoarib, et ses frères, se sont exposés au danger dans les combats incessants qui ont eu lieu dans le pays. Ils ont tenu tête aux ennemis de la nation pour que le Temple et la Loi restent debout, ils ont ainsi couvert de gloire leur nation.
30 'For when, Jonathan having ral ied his nation and become its high priest and having then beengathered to his ancestors,	30 Jonathan a rassemblé la nation et est devenu son grand prêtre, puis il est allé rejoindre ses pères.
31 the enemy planned to invade the country, intending to devastate their territory and to lay hands ontheir sanctuary,	31 Les ennemis des Juifs ont voulu alors envahir leur pays pour ravager leur territoire et mettre la main sur leur Lieu Saint,
32 Simon next came forward to fight for his nation: spending much of his personal wealth on arming hisnation's fighting men and on providing their pay;	32 mais Simon s’est levé et a combattu pour sa nation. 33 fortifying the towns of Judaea, as wel as Beth-Zur on the Judaean frontier where the enemy arsenalhad formerly been, and stationing in it a garrison of Jewish soldiers;	33 Il a fortifié les villes de Juda, ainsi que Beth-Sour aux limites de la Judée: il a placé une garnison juive dans cette ville qui était occupée jusqu’alors par les ennemis.
34 fortifying Joppa on the coast, and Gezer on the borders of Azotus, a place formerly inhabited by theenemy, founding a Jewish colony there, and providing the settlers with everything they needed to set them ontheir feet;	34 Il a fortifié Joppé sur la mer, et Gazer aux frontières d’Azotos; autrefois les ennemis l’habitaient, mais il y a placé des colons juifs et entreposé tout ce qui était nécessaire pour leur entretien.
35 'In consequence of which, the people, aware of Simon's loyalty and of the glory which he wasdetermined to win for his nation, have made him their ethnarch and high priest, for all his services and for theintegrity and loyalty which he has shown towards his nation, and for having by every means sought to enhancehis people's power;	35 Voyant la fidélité de Simon et la gloire qu’il voulait donner à sa nation, le peuple l’a fait gouverneur et grand prêtre, reconnaissant ainsi tous les services qu’il avait rendus, la justice et la fidélité qu’il avait montrées à la nation, parce que, en toute occasion, il avait cherché à élever son peuple.
36 'It has fal en to him in his time to expel the foreigners from his country, including those in the City ofDavid in Jerusalem, who had converted it into a citadel for their own use, from which they would sal y out todefile the surroundings of the sanctuary and to violate its sacred character;	36 Durant ses jours, et grâce à lui, les nations ont été chassées du pays qu’elles occupaient, et de même ceux qui s’étaient installés dans la Cité de David à Jérusalem, d’où ils sortaient pour souiller les alentours du Temple et profaner sa sainteté de façon honteuse.
37 to station Jewish soldiers there instead for the security of the country and the city; and to heightenthe wal s of Jerusalem;	37 Il y a placé des soldats juifs et l’a fortifiée pour assurer la défense du pays et de la ville; il a aussi surélevé les remparts de Jérusalem.
38 'And since King Demetrius has heard that the Romans call the Jews their friends, al ies and brothers,	38 À la suite de cela, le roi Démétrius lui a confié la charge de grand prêtre,
39 and that they have given an honourable reception to Simon's ambassadors, and, furthermore,	39 l’a déclaré son ami et lui a accordé les plus grands honneurs:
40 that the Jews and priests are happy that Simon should, pending the advent of a genuine prophet, betheir ethnarch and high priest for life	40 il avait appris que les Romains appelaient les Juifs leurs amis, leurs alliés et leurs frères, et qu’ils avaient reçu les envoyés de Simon avec honneur.”
41 therefore he has confirmed him in the high-priestly office, has raised him to the rank of Friend andhas showered great honours on him, also confirming him as their commander-in-chief,	41 “Les Juifs et les prêtres ont donc jugé bon que Simon soit prince et grand prêtre pour toujours, jusqu’au jour où paraîtra un prophète digne de foi. Il commandera leurs armées,
42 with the right to appoint officials to oversee the fabric of the sanctuary and to administer the country,munitions and fortresses;	42 il aura la charge des Lieux-Saints, il établira les responsables des services publics et de l’administration du pays. Il veillera sur les armements et la défense des forteresses.
43 he is to have personal charge of the sanctuary, and to be obeyed by al ; al official documents in thecountry must be drawn up in his name; and he may assume the purple and may wear golden ornaments;	43 Il aura la charge du peuple saint, il sera obéi de tous. Tous les actes publics dans le pays seront écrits en son nom, et lui sera revêtu de pourpre et d’or.
44 'Furthermore, it is against the law for any member of the public or of the priesthood to contraveneany of these enactments or to contest his decisions, or to convene a meeting anywhere in the country without hispermission, or to assume the purple or wear the golden brooch;	44 Parmi le peuple, comme parmi les prêtres, personne ne pourra rejeter aucun de ces points, contredire aucun de ses ordres ou convoquer sans son autorisation une assemblée dans le pays, porter une robe de pourpre ou une agrafe d’or.
45 and anyone acting contrary to, or rejecting any article of, these enactments is liable to punishment;	45 Quiconque agira contrairement à ce décret ou en violera un seul article sera châtié.
46 'And since the people have unanimously agreed to grant Simon the right to act as aforesaid, and	46 Le peuple a jugé bon que Simon agisse selon ce décret
47 since Simon, for his part, has given his assent, and has consented to assume the high-priestly officeand to be commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews and their priests, and to preside over al :	47 et Simon a accepté. Il a bien voulu remplir la charge de grand prêtre, de chef des armées et de gouverneur des Juifs et des prêtres, enfin, d’exercer le commandement suprême.”
48 'So, be it now enacted: that this record be inscribed on bronze tablets and be erected at someconspicuous place within the precincts of the Temple,	48 On décida de graver ce document sur des tablettes de bronze et de les placer dans la galerie du Temple, en un lieu bien visible;
