1 In the year 172, King Demetrius assembled his forces and marched into Media to raise help for thefight against Trypho.	1 L'anno centosettantadue il re Demetrio messe insieme il suo esercito, e andò nella Media per adunare soccorsi, affin di vincere Trifone.
2 When Arsaces king of Persia and Media heard that Demetrius had entered his territory, he sent one ofhis generals to capture him alive.	2 E Arsace re della Persia e della Media avendo udito come Demetrio era entrato sui suoi confini, mandò uno de' suoi capitani, perché lo prendesse vivo, e gliel conducesse.
3 The general defeated the army of Demetrius, seized him and brought him to Arsaces, who imprisonedhim.	3 E quegli andò, e mise in rotta l'esercito di Demetrio, e lo prese, e lo condusse ad Arsace, il quale lo fece mettere in prigione.
4 The country was at peace throughout the days of Simon. He sought the good of his nation and theywere wel pleased with his authority, as with his magnificence, throughout his life.	4 Or tutto il paese di Giuda fu in pace a tempo di Simone. He conquered Gezer, Beth-Zur and the Citadel, ridding them of everyimpurity, and no one could resist him.	7 E raunò gran numero di prigionieri, ed ebbe il dominio di Gazara e di Bethsara e della cittadella e ne tolse via le immondezze, e non vi fù chi contrastasse con lui.
8 The people farmed their land in peace; the land gave its produce, the trees of the plain their fruit.	8 E ciascheduno coltivava in pace la sua terra: e la terra di Giuda dava le sue raccolte, e le piante de' campi davano il loro frutto.
9 The elders sat at ease in the squares, all their talk was of their prosperity; the young men woresplendid armour.	9 I sentori si stavan sedendo nelle piazze, e trattavano delle utilità del paese, e la gioventù, si vestiva di splendide vesti e di abiti militari.
10 He kept the towns supplied with provisions and furnished with fortifications, until his fame resoundedto the ends of the earth.	10 Egli distribuiva de' viveri nelle città, e le rendeva come tante fortezze, talmente che il suo nome, e la sua gloria si sparse sino agli ultimi confini del mondo.
11 He established peace in the land, and Israel knew great joy.	11 Egli diede la tranquillità al paese, e Israele n'ebbe grande allegrezza.
12 Each man sat under his own vine and his own fig tree, and there was no one to make them afraid.	12 Onde ciascheduno potea stare assiso all'ombra della sua vite e della sua ficaia, senta che ci fosse chi gli desse timore.
13 No enemy was left in the land to fight them, the very kings of those times had been crushed.	13 Non restava sulla terra chi li molestasse: i regi in quel tempo erano abbattuti.
14 He encouraged the afflicted members of his people, suppressing every wicked man and renegade.He strove to observe the Law,	14 Egli fa il protettore dei piccoli del suo popolo, fu zelante dell'onor della legge, e sterminò gl'iniqui e i malvagj:
15 and gave new splendour to the Temple, enriching it with many sacred vessels.	15 Ornò di gloria il santuario, e accrebbe il numero dei vasi santi.
16 When it became known in Rome and as far as Sparta that Jonathan was dead, people were deeplygrieved.	16 Or la nuovo della morte di Gionata pervenne sino a Roma e a Sparta, e arrecò loro gran dispiacere.
17 But as soon as they heard that his brother Simon had succeeded him as high priest and was masterof the country and the cities in it,	17 Ma avendo udito come Simone suo fratello era stato fatto sommo Sacerdote in luogo di lui, ed egli avea la signoria del paese e di quelle città;
18 they wrote to him on bronze tablets to renew the treaty of friendship and al iance which they hadmade with his brothers, Judas and Jonathan,	18 Scrissero a lui in tavole di bronzo per rinnovare l'amicizia e la confederazione fatta con Giuda e con Gionata suoi fratelli.
19 and the document was read out before the assembly in Jerusalem.	19 E le lettere furon lette in Gerusalemme davanti a tutta la moltitudine. E questa é la copia della lettera scritta dagli Sparziati:
20 This is the copy of the letter sent by the Spartans: 'The rulers and the city of Sparta, to Simon thehigh priest and to the elders and priests and the rest of the people of the Jews, greetings.	20 I principi e le città degli Sparziati a Simone sommo Sacerdote e ai seniori e a sacerdoti e a tutto il popolo de' Giudei fratelli, salute.
21 'The ambassadors whom you sent to our people have informed us of your glory and prosperity, andwe are delighted with their visit.	21 Gli ambasciadori mandati da voi al nostro popolo ci hanno dato parte della gloria e della felicità e contentezza vostra, e la loro venuta ci ha fatto molto piacere.
22 We have recorded their declarations in the minutes of our public assemblies, as fol ows, "Numeniusson of Antiochus, and Antipater son of Jason, ambassadors of the Jews, came to us to renew their friendshipwith us.	22 E abbiam fatto descrivere quello che essi han detto nell'adunanza del popolo in questi termini: Numenio di Antioco e Antipatro figliuolo di Giasone ambasciadori dei Giudei, sono venuti a noi per rinnovare l'antica nostra amicizia.
23 And it was the people's pleasure to receive these personages with honour and to deposit a copy oftheir statements in the public archives, so that the people of Sparta might preserve a record of them. A copy wasalso made for Simon the high priest." 24 After this, Simon sent Numenius to Rome as the bearer of a large golden shield weighing a thousandmina, to confirm the alliance with them.	24 Indi Simone mandò a Roma Numenio con un brocchiere di oro, che pesava mille mine per confermare l'alleanza con essi.

26 He stood firm, he and his brothers and his father's house: he fought off the enemies of Israel andsecured its freedom.' So they recorded an inscription on bronze tablets and set it up on pil ars on Mount Zion.	26 Perocchè egli rimesse in piedi i suoi fratelli, e sterminò i nemici d'Israele dal suo paese. E decretarono a lui la libertà. E questo fu scritto in tavole di bronzo poste tra i monumenti nel monte di Sion.

28 'In Asaramel, in the Grand Assembly of priests and people, of princes of the nation and of elders ofthe country: 'We are acquainted with the matters fol owing:	28 Nella grande adunanza de' sacerdoti e del popolo e dei capi della nazione e dei seniori del paese ella è cosa notoria, come molte guerre sono state nel nostro paese.
29 'When there was almost incessant fighting in the country Simon, son of Mattathias, a priest of theline of Joarib, and his brothers courted danger and withstood their nation's enemies to safeguard the integrity oftheir sanctuary and of the Law, and so brought their nation great glory;	29 E Simone figliuolo di Mathathia della stirpe di Jarib e i suoi fratelli si esposero ai pericoli, opponendosi ai nemici della loro nazione in difesa del toro santuario e della legge, ed hanno fatto grand'onore alla loro nazione.

32 Simon next came forward to fight for his nation: spending much of his personal wealth on arming hisnation's fighting men and on providing their pay;	32 E allora si oppose lara Simone, e combatte pel suo popolo, e spese molto denaro armando i soldati di sua nazione, e dando loro la paga.
33 fortifying the towns of Judaea, as wel as Beth-Zur on the Judaean frontier where the enemy arsenalhad formerly been, and stationing in it a garrison of Jewish soldiers;	33 E l'ortificò le città della Giudea e Bethsura ai confini della Giudea, che prima era occupata dall'armi nemiche: ed egli vi pose presidio di Giudei.
34 fortifying Joppa on the coast, and Gezer on the borders of Azotus, a place formerly inhabited by theenemy, founding a Jewish colony there, and providing the settlers with everything they needed to set them ontheir feet;	34 E fortificò Joppe sulla spiaggia del mare e Gazara, che è ai confini di Azoto, dove prima erano postati i nemici, ed egli vi pose de' Giudei con tutto quello che potea servir loro per difendersi.
35 'In consequence of which, the people, aware of Simon's loyalty and of the glory which he wasdetermined to win for his nation, have made him their ethnarch and high priest, for all his services and for theintegrity and loyalty which he has shown towards his nation, and for having by every means sought to enhancehis people's power;	35 E il popolo veggendo le cose operate da Simone, e il bene, ch'ei procurava di fare alla sua gente, lo dichiarò suo condottiere e principe de' sacerdoti per aver fatto tutto questo in pro del suo popolo, e per la sua giustizia e per la fedeltà serbala alla sua gente, e per aver cercate tutte le vie d'ingrandire il suo popolo.
36 'It has fal en to him in his time to expel the foreigners from his country, including those in the City ofDavid in Jerusalem, who had converted it into a citadel for their own use, from which they would sal y out todefile the surroundings of the sanctuary and to violate its sacred character;	36 E nel tempo del suo governo tale si é goduta prosperità per mezzo di lui, che sono state dal loro paese discacciate le genti, e quelli che erano nella città di David, e nella cittadella di Gerusalemme, donde uscivano a profanare tutti i luoghi attorno al santuario, e facevano oltraggi grandi alla santità di esso.
37 to station Jewish soldiers there instead for the security of the country and the city; and to heightenthe wal s of Jerusalem;	37 Ed egli vi pose de' Giudei a difesa del paese e della città, e rialzo le mura di Gerusalemme.
38 'And since King Demetrius has heard that the Romans call the Jews their friends, al ies and brothers,	38 E il re Demetrio lo confermò nel sommo sacerdozio.
39 and that they have given an honourable reception to Simon's ambassadors, and, furthermore,	39 E dipoi la fece suo amico, e gli fece grandissimi onori.
40 that the Jews and priests are happy that Simon should, pending the advent of a genuine prophet, betheir ethnarch and high priest for life	40 Perocchè egli sapevo come i Giudei erano stati dichiarati amici e confederali e fratelli da' Romani, e come questi aveano accolto onorevolmente gli ambasciadori di Simone:
41 therefore he has confirmed him in the high-priestly office, has raised him to the rank of Friend andhas showered great honours on him, also confirming him as their commander-in-chief,	41 E come i Giudei e i loro sacerdoti di comun consenso lo avean creato loro condottiere, e sommo sacerdote in perpetuo sino alla venuta del profeta fedele:
42 with the right to appoint officials to oversee the fabric of the sanctuary and to administer the country,munitions and fortresses;	42 E che egli sia loro capo, e abbia cura delle cose sante, e crei deputati per le opere pubbliche, e sopra il paese e sopra le cose della guerra, e sopra i presidj:
43 he is to have personal charge of the sanctuary, and to be obeyed by al ; al official documents in thecountry must be drawn up in his name; and he may assume the purple and may wear golden ornaments;	43 E amministrì le cose del santuario, e sia egli obbedito da tutti, e che tutti gli atti nel paese si scrivano sotto il suo nome, ed egli abbia l'uso della porpora, e porti la fibbia d'oro.
44 'Furthermore, it is against the law for any member of the public or of the priesthood to contraveneany of these enactments or to contest his decisions, or to convene a meeting anywhere in the country without hispermission, or to assume the purple or wear the golden brooch;	44 E che a nissuno del popolo, ne dei sacerdoti sia permesso di alterare alcuno di questi ordini, o contradire a quello ch' egli avrà stabilito, o convocar l'adunanze nel paese senza di lui, o vestir porpora o portare la fibbia d'oro.
45 and anyone acting contrary to, or rejecting any article of, these enactments is liable to punishment;	45 E che chiunque farà casa contro questi ordini, ad alcuno ne violerà, sarà in colpa.
46 'And since the people have unanimously agreed to grant Simon the right to act as aforesaid, and	46 E piacque a tutto il popolo di dare tal potestà a Simone, e che tutto questo si eseguisse.
47 since Simon, for his part, has given his assent, and has consented to assume the high-priestly officeand to be commander-in-chief and ethnarch of the Jews and their priests, and to preside over al :	47 E Simone accettò con gradimento le funzioni del sommo Sacerdozio, e di essere capo e principe della nazione Giudea e de' sacerdoti, e di avere autorità sopra tutte le cose.
48 'So, be it now enacted: that this record be inscribed on bronze tablets and be erected at someconspicuous place within the precincts of the Temple,	48 E quelli ordinarono, che questo decretò fosse scritto in tavole di bronzo, le quali si mettessero nel portico del tempio in luogo distinto:
49 and that copies be deposited in the Treasury for Simon and his descendants.'	49 E copia di esso si metta nell'erario del tempio tralle mani di Simone e dei suoi figliuoli.
